So unprofessional, what a joke of a physical therapy facility. Front desk staff is horrible, talking about another patient in front of myself and another patient . This is my 3rd visit and they appear to always be on their phone, God forbid you interrupt their conversation and phone time with a question. The worst experience. physical therapist have little to no experience possibly just starting out, -Facility there was urine all over the bathroom floor near the toilet and also no soap. The gymnasium area is extremely crowded with each therapist working on about 3 to 4 patients at a time. Overwhelming and overstimulating. Referring me here must've been some sort of sick joke. read more

Sorry to say that I did not have a positive experience at Spear. I'll start by saying that everyone was very nice and the space is clean & well-equipped, however, the therapists are very inexperienced (everyone starts somewhere) but they were not guided by more experienced therapists. every time I was there, I was typically one of 3 ppl that the therapists were seeing at a given time. We would start late, and I felt that the therapist was lost in treating my shoulder. She would always spend the first 5+ minutes just researching and reading about what exercises she should give me and was almost afraid to stretch me out. I'm not an expert, so I gave the benefit of the doubt, maybe I was thinking too much into it as it was early in my rehab, until my surgeon called me and said that I should change therapists immediately as the questions the therapist would email him told him that she had no idea what she was doing, which validated my assumption. When I started with my new therapist and explained why I switched (and not mentioning the name of the practice), she said "oh you must have went to Spear. they are known to have inexperienced therapists and take on too many patients". read more

Cailin Dix is an amazing physical therapist! She is kind, knowledgeable, and genuinely cares about all of her patients. I look forward to PT every week because of her (and the other amazing staff at Spear!). read more

Do not go here especially during covid, because they turned my physical therapy sessions into group sessions with zero covid-safe practices. No social distancing + no disinfecting while they touch everyone! The therapists are friendly but don't really help much. They have multiple clients at the same time where they work on everyone with different issues all at once, touching different people all at once. Yes, during the midst of a pandemic. It was very disturbing and disappointing because I was in a lot of pain and went for over a month, until I realized that shouldn't be common practice. They bill my insurance max they can + copay for maybe 15-20 minutes of their actual time/attention/work. The front staff was always on it but the actual therapists do the bare minimum. Save your time, money and energy and go elsewhere. read more

Radhika Patel is the most amazing DPT! I am so happy that I was matched with her when I came in for my first visit. She was patient with me and answered all my questions/concerns. But she also pushed me when necessary and even though it hurt, I know I needed to do it. After a very long rehab I can say she knows what she's doing and I would recommend anyone to see her. read more

My therapist was lovely and the front desk could not be more welcoming. However, for each hour I spent here, I probably only had ten to fifteen minutes with the actual therapist and then spent the rest of the hour doing exercises on my own with occasional check-ins by an assistant. I found, after seeing a different physical therapy practice, that my form when doing exercises on my own is consistently pretty poor and but this was addressed only once when I performed them on the table/ in the room at Spear. The Spear space is clean and I found it easy to sort out appointments and insurance. My review is based mostly on the fact that the Spear model has its therapists seeing 2 - 3 patients at the same time rather than focusing individually on the patient for the entirety of their scheduled appointment. I am now with at a practice where my therapist spends the whole appointment with me and it is so much better. During my session, I show my therapist one rep of one set of my home exercise routine (so she can continue to correct my form) and from there we work together on things that I can't necessarily do myself at home as well as the massage and other things. I feel so much more confident in my recovery as I feel my therapist has the time to see and focus on me as her patient rather than running around from patient to patient. read more

I've been going to Spear for 5 months now and honestly it's incredible! Everyone is so welcoming and supportive and has a great attitude. However, my physical therapist Kathryn is hands down THE ABSOLUTE BEST! She's a pelvic floor specialist and I'm not over exaggerating when I say she's changed my life. She is so warm, and really takes time to listen to what's going on with my body. She is so knowledgeable and makes my physical therapy treatment, an experience that isn't objectively great, amazing. I love going after work and having a session with her instantly boost my mood. For pelvic floor therapy it's important to have a therapist you trust and from the first session Kathryn has been that for me. I was so nervous, but her personality and knowledge made it so much easier to relax- which is key in pelvic floor therapy. I would commute from anywhere to go to this Spear to see Kathryn. A+++ as a physica therapist and human being! read more

I am so happy I started at SPEAR a few months ago! From the start, the location has always been super clean, the front desk staff are very helpful and always friendly whenever I walk in. At our first appointment, Derek spent ample time addressing all my questions and explaining the plan for our sessions. He has been an incredible physical therapist and is extremely knowledgeable, and always friendly and professional. Not only has every session been great and has helped me progressed to where I wanted to be, Derek has also always been accommodating to my schedule and is always flexible. I am so so lucky I stumbled upon SPEAR and ended up as Derek's patient. I highly recommend seeing him for PT! Also.... special shoutout to Kevin and Alice for being the best and always helping me out with my exercises! read more

By far the best PT practice in the NYC area and in the whole country in my opinion. I have had a lingering knee issue for 3 years now and because I was in school I would only be able to do Spear for 2 months at a time. During that portion of my recovery, I always felt strong and didn't experience that many issues. Unfortunately, it was the nature of being a college student and the lesser quality PT clinics in Florida that led me to never get off on the right foot. Recently though I moved back to the City and am able to go to Spear Full-Time. You will not find a better group of people than the Spear employees. They are always kind and care for your injury the best way possible. My therapist's name is Mohit Birdi and he is awesome. Would highly recommend! read more

For a previous injury in 2019, my sports rehab doctor at Weill Cornell Medicine gave me three choices for PT. I visited all three, and decided on Spear PT. It was a great experience then -- over time my injury healed and the exercises helped me regain strength. For a new unrelated injury, I started at Spear E 34th, as it is more convenient given my different schedule. I've been working with Cailin Dix for a few weeks, and I can already feel improvement. She's awesome. She has put together a program of great exercises for office visits and given me some great at-home exercises. She is supportive, but also pushes me to do a little more and to maintain correct form throughout each exercise -- especially as muscle fatigue sets in. Although she may have one or two other patients at the same time, as I learn the exercises, she does not have to stand there and watch every minute, but I sense that she is very close, and she is multi-tasking. This works because you have a lot of individual attention at the beginning of one's treatment, and then you are working at little bit more on your own as you go along. And Cailin is watching out of the corner of her eye and continually checking in and asking me how things are going and how am I feeling. She has a training assistant looking and helping as needed -- of course, even my doctor has a resident sitting in and learning. Lastly, Covid-19 is on the up-tick right now, and that may cause some to be concerned about being in any group setting. I feel that Spear 34th Street is doing everything they can to minimize the risks -- therapists are disinfecting their hands often, and there are assistants there sanitizing all the treatment table surfaces and exercise equipment. The tables are close, but they spread patients out when they can. And doing different exercises and moving to different stations seems to make sense from a social distancing point of view. And everyone is masked and I'm double-masked, vaccinated and boosted. The thing is my injury is not getting better by itself. I find that what works best for me is to have a coaching type of person and set appointments to do what I need to do to get better. read more

Very disappointed in the services. The therapists don't seem very knowledgeable or experienced and they had me doing basic exercises that I could have googled. I was a patient here over a year ago. Initially I called to make sure they took my insurance and I was informed I would be covered in full and not responsible for any co-pays. I decided to go with them instead of NYU because it was just a few blocks closer and for someone revering from an injury, a few blocks is a big deal. BIG MISTAKE Participated for a few months before I felt like it was a waste of my time and I wasn't feeling any better. Left without issue. Fast forward over a year later, I receive a bill in the mail from SPEAR for almost $400. Called several times to sort everything out with them (since November 2019!) and remind them that during my intake/initial visit, I was informed that I would have zero financial responsibility. They keep promising to have a manager call me back because other clients were complaining of the same thing so they thought it might be a billing error. It's been over 4 months and I am still receiving bills. I manage a healthcare clinic. I know the importance of good customer service and service recovery - and this isn't it. read more

Spear is a clean, friendly, and professional environment to receive physical therapy. I've been to other facilities and can attest that I'd recommend this place due to the cleanliness of the equipment, friendly staff, and competent physical therapists. During my time at Spear, I chose to work with Kathryn, who has 10+ years working as a yoga instructor. I personally believe this lends itself well to this position as she understands the intricacies of how different body parts work and mold together through movement and breath. Not only is she knowledgeable about the human body, she has great bedside manner. She's always willing to answer questions with patience and great detail, even utilizing different mediums (like videos) to describe and demonstrate how the human anatomy works. Overall, she's helped me breathe better, identify and alleviate pain in an area that my primary doctor wasn't able to pinpoint. Based on my experience, I'd highly recommend Kathryn! read more

Don't go here. I want the therapists all to myself :) After years of pain from my TWO torn hip labrums and TWO torn ACLs (plus two hip arthroscopies), I couldn't deal. Walking, sleeping, and even sitting just hurt. Derek practically saved my life. After a few weeks, I started to feel some relief. I wasn't sure if I'd ever feel comfortable again but Derek reassured me that if I kept going, things would change. And jut like that, after a few months, my life had totally changed. No more pain. In the rare moments when I feel pain, it's way less intense and disappears quickly. Derek is an amazing diagnostician, a stellar service provider, and just a cool guy.. which makes the hour at PT pass so much more quickly. Spear PT has one good eye for talent! Thank you guys for all you have done. read more

Avoid, avoid, avoid!!! I went to this Spear location for a lower back injury. Not only did they not help with my recovery, they made my injury worse! I was bed ridden for around a month with the worst imaginable pain in lower back that resulted in requiring surgery, thousands of dollars of incremental expenses, additional complications, and months of recovery (that is still ongoing) thanks to the improper care I received. Somehow it is acceptable for the physical therapist to be supervising 3 patients at once like that is even possible. The manager had the nerve to argue this was possible after the fact. The assistants they had were absolutely useless. They had no interest in supervising or helping with proper technique. I strongly suggest you avoid this location and go to the Grand Central location instead. Night and day difference in terms of the patient centricity. Lastly, thanks for making me wait months to provide me with a refund. read more

I started going to Spear last September after a neck injury, seeing Derek. He was very diligent in understanding the issue and made me feel very at ease. With a combo of hands-on work and various movements and exercises, Derek was able to get me to a much more comfortable point on a day-to-day basis and I was able to stop going to Spear. When a similar issue resurfaced many months later, he went above and beyond to accommodate me into his schedule to alleviate my pain and address my issue. While I look forward to fully recovering and no longer attending physical therapy, I enjoy spending time there chatting with Derek and the rest of the staff, and feel very taken care of! read more

Spear PT is very well organized and Jeremy Crow is an absolute rockstar physical therapist. I could not give a higher recommendation! The entire concept of pt here is completely different from all the prior pt places I have gone and it WORKS!!!! They are amazing! If you need pt look no further this team of therapist are simply the best!!!! THANK YOU! read more

Initially I didn't know what to expect, as SPEAR is very different from other rehabilitation facilities and therapists. Spear has a large gym, lined with tables around it and the therapists work with several clients at a time. I was concerned there wouldn't be any privacy as there are no separations between patient areas. I swallowed my concerns and went along with the program and I am so glad i did! I actually like the open space as I can talk with other patients and therapists, and it's been not only very informative, it's also fun. My therapist, Sebastian Altomarino, is absolutely excellent. He is by far the best PT I have ever worked with. I don't mind him flowing between patients as it gives me time to get my own work done. Sebastian is always carefully monitoring my progress and even keeps counts from afar! My recovery from a second total knee-replacement has been arduous and painful -- but the physical therapy has quite actually "gotten me on my feet again" and the intense pain subsiding. I heartily and fully recommend SPEAR Physical Therapy to you. It's exactly what I needed: professional therapy, education about my condition, and always an enjoyable time. I look forward to my physical therapy sessions for the first time ever. read more

Rating is attributable to facility's failure to follow Covid 19 safety requirements. On two occasions patients were unmasked for a period of time. Social distancing was not followed. Theoretically, only every other PT bed/table was supposed to be used but frequently this was not followed. Social distancing was not followed in the exercise area either. The director took the position that based on their square footage they had not exceeded the permitted number of patients, but overlooked the obvious-that patients and staff were often in close proximity due to the layout of the faculty which has very little open space. Frequently patients were within a foot or two of another patient or a therapist/staff person other than their own. read more

Kathryn Maykish at Spear PT has changed my life! After seeing numerous doctors for years with no explanation or resolution of my pain, she was able to finally help me heal. As others have stated, she is extremely patient, kind and knowledgable. She really believes in you - which makes it all the more possible to heal from any injury you may be seeing her for. I cannot express my gratitude for Kathryn and the impact she has made on my life! THANK YOU! read more

I was not entirely sure if the reviews are real. I had an issue with billing that was promptly handled by a supervisor.

The staff Is very knowledgeable, was easy to make an appointment and they confirm and check insurance paperwork prior to my session and inform with what to expect with deductible or whats your responsibility and so on. When you walk in you notice clean space first, they even offer comfortable clothing to change into for convenience. Our session started with front desk given us a tour of the place and I was matched up with a pt who answered all my questions and made a follow up appointment including sending me home with printed out stretches to do at home. Easy and pleasant same visit, felt well taking care of. read more

I could not more highly recommend Meghan King as a physical therapist. Not only did she get me back in tip-top shape, she gave me the tools to make sure my injury didn't happen again. She's professional, highly skilled and makes the session fun. The facility is spotless, it's easy to make/change appointments and they have a shower if you need to go to work after. As someone who has done PT several times, SPEAR was by far the best. read more

After 10+ years of chronic pelvic pain that many doctors couldn't diagnose or treat Kathryn Maykish has changed my life. Kathryn is my biggest cheerleader and I honestly couldn't have made it through this past year without her. She lets me ask her thousands of questions and has really helped me understand my body so much better. She also will send me articles and anything she finds that she thinks might help me which I truly appreciate. Not only is Kathryn super knowledgable, but she's really patient, as well as funny, kind, warm, and genuine. She meets me where I'm at but at the same time gently pushes me when she knows I can do more. Above all, she never lets me get down on myself. She believes in me more than I believe in myself, and overtime I've come to believe in myself so much more as a result. Honestly, working with Kathryn is the best thing that could have ever happened to me. For real. I never thought I could make the improvements I have. Before starting PT with her I could not even imagine a world where I didn't have to live in so much much pain everyday. Kathryn is making that a reality for me and I could not be more grateful. Like, so, so, so grateful. She really has a gift for healing. Thank you, Kathryn, for all you do and for your dedication to your patients. You are truly making a difference in people's lives. P.S. the whole team at SPEAR 34th is great! Everyone at the front desk is so friendly and super awesome at making something that pretty stressful very pleasant. Thank you SPEAR! read more

Saw Cody at Spear and he was incredible! Very patient, great listener, very diligent with the exercises and care he chose to treat my bulged disc. On top of it, the service was phenomenal. Would 100% recommend to anyone who wants great care on top of great customer service too! read more

Just over a year ago I had a biking accident which resulted in a serious lower leg break, has required two surgeries and promised more to come. Prognosis was that my leg and life will never be the same. First time experience - the front desk staff of Spear Murray Hill were incredibly welcoming and walked me through their amenities. I was very nervous as I had just begun using crutches but their accommodations are for people of all abilities. There is a lift to the studio downstairs which is spacious and constantly kept clean. Therapist - Derek Lee has been amazing throughout my journey to recovery. My first appointment he spent the time to learn about my injury and I feel he has been invested in my health ever since. He gives personal attention and feedback to all his patients, spending time to create new challenges and my results can speak to that. Results - So far we've proven the surgeon wrong and have been able to get more range of motion, less pain, and I have greater confidence in my abilities than I thought possible in a year. Derek has really been the catalyst for it all and I am so thankful to have some of my old life back. As they say at Spear, "Life can't wait"! read more

Can't leave enough positive feedback about SPEAR Physical Therapy and my therapist Megan. Came to SPEAR Murray Hill on the recommendation of a friend after starting my rehab at Rusk for a hip replacement and broken femur. I truly feel Megan has made an extraordinary effort to understand my goals, where I was at mentally and geared my therapy to accomplishing my goals while also respecting my fears after trauma. SPEAR worked with me on getting additional insurance coverage and Megan always had evaluations and assessments ready so I never had to postpone a session which happened several times at Rusk. The entire staff is competent, friendly and professional. Megan is incredibly positive, encouraging and has motivated me to put in the extra work at home and the improvements are remarkable. Highly recommend!!! read more

Hands down best facility in Manhattan. I went in there barely being able to walk because of back pain and Austin had me back playing baseball within a few weeks and now I am back to 100% and also noticed I am much stronger in previously vulnerable areas. I found the exercises to be extremely helpful towards recovery and building back up muscle mass. Highly recommend using Austin Afshar and Gwen Giffard as I have personal experiences with both but I would trust anyone from SPEAR. Will certainly go back if needed! read more

My experience with SPEAR physical therapy was nothing but disappointment. I was seeing Kathryn who I thought genuinely cared and wanted to help - but in the end it all turned out to be one skillful pretense. She is new to PT however acts as a is she knows it all - I tried pointing it out to her once, and that is when she revealed her true self. Kathryn is overly confident in her abilities but lacks experience and possibly knowledge - however she is excellent in camouflaging it. If and when confronted, she is at loss, and attempts to attack instead. All of her treatments led to symptoms flare up, and then she simply "referred" me to massage therapist Moses who is a nice man, but lacks professionalism overall, and completely did not understand my situation. But to be fair - it was Kathryn who should never have referred me to Moses - she has done couple of those weird/inappropriate referrals in the past, so this one was nothing new. What made me write this review is an aftertaste I got after talking with Kathryn last week per her request - she took it upon herself to act as a piece maker. She has thing overall high almighty demeanor to herself with condescending overtone - which I certainly don't appreciate. She lacks compassion and empathy which is a shame as this is just the beginning of her career. I will never return to this facility - and - as a referring provider myself will never refer my patients there - as no patient should be treated the way I was. She made me cry after talking to me last week - not because of what she said - but because of how she said it. I have been a patient at Zion PT - you can read my Yelp review of my therapist Staci there btw - Staci who is my hero, my go to person who truly cares and truly KNOWS what she is doing as opposed to Kathryn who treated me like a lab rat trying various things without knowing what the outcome would be. There is one more thing in all this - and that is the manager of this place Austin. This guy called me the moment he saw my review with sole purpose to make me change my mind and remove it - he was trying to bribe me any way possible - giving me all the options of coming back and promising only best - as long as I remove my review so that they can have their 5 star rating - I saved his emails as proof. Then one of the patients posted her review and ends up badmouthing me - and guess what Austin does? He calls me and totally changes it all 180 degrees and now I am a guilty party. What a morale huh?? Then about a month or so ago I was recommended to start pelvic therapy - and I picked this same Spear just different location - simply because it is the only place in the city that offer this Pelvicore program. I extensively discussed it with my Staci and my PMR Doctor - plan was to get evaluated and give it a try. Today I get a call from Austin informing me that because of the way I treated poor victim Kathryn I am banned from being a patient at any other Spear locations - basically he is refusing care to me which by definition is patient abandonment. On which grounds and how legal that is I don't even want to bring up - I will be discussing this with their legal dept and get to the bottom of it - mind you, this Pelvicore is offered only there and no where else in the city so if I am denied care there has to be a damn good reason for it - or they will face legal repercussions for their insane discriminative actions - so all people out there - beware!!! read more

SPEAR is the BEST for physical therapy. It has been nothing but an amazing experience from the beginning. I had an initial consultation and then right into exercises and ensuring I had the right form. Kathryn and Amanda are amazing, and super attentive to all my needs each and every time I walk through the door. I honestly can say that Austin is the best physical Therapist I have ever seen. Not only is he super knowledgeable about what works, but he is one of the most personable people. He is genuine, funny, and has a true passion for helping people. He will always remember what is going on in your life, and his positivity is contagious. It is not a surprise that he is the Director of the clinic! I am feeling SO much better than starting and am obsessed with cupping to loosen my back (I have three herniated thoracic discs - not a common thing to treat). I feel extremely lucky to be working with Austin, although all of the PT's there are amazing. As a very critical person, I only Yelp when I have a very good or very bad experience. I would highly recommend SPEAR 34 to anyone who is looking to improve their life. read more

I love this place. I guess that sounds weird because who "loves" physical therapy? But it's a welcoming environment, when you come in it's like you are Norm from Cheers. Mohit Birdi is easily the best PT and I recommend him. He is a professional (based on the comparison with my past experience at other Spear PT locations) and highly-educated (he has the best educational background at Spear Murray Hill) therapist who truly loves performing physical therapy and his work (I found this based on a random conversation with him). And he is a charming person with a seemingly ordinary but indeed extremely blessed and beautiful life that will, oddly enough, make you bless him even more rather than feeling any jealous even you feel your own life can hardly measure up. read more

I have had the benefit of being treated by both Louisa and Kathryn. They are both amazing physical therapists who cared tremendously about my wellbeing and were extremely knowledgeable about my injuries; they also took the time to teach me about what was going on in my body which helped me to learn how to further heal myself. I was seen for knee, wrist, and elbow injuries over the course of 7 months and I could not have imagined better care. The facility is also inviting, clean, and friendly. I ended up in physical therapy after an injury I labored through during the NYC Marathon this past November. As an avid runner and someone who was very tentative about physical therapy, this place has been a life savior. Any of my concerns were put to rest by coming here. I have to say Louisa Powers and the whole team at Spear Murray Hill are absolutely amazing. They have both extraordinary patience and knowledge. Louisa is attentive and manages to combine compassion and the ability to motivate me to challenge myself. The entire staff (Josh, Rhonnie, MIke and Rihanna, et. al) are all supportive and helpful in the process. Any runner (or anyone in need of physical therapy) who needs help in the process of recovering/treating an injury both physically and mentally, this is the place to go. read more

Things with Spear started out well and ended poorly. I began with an introductory call to see whether my insurance was accepted, explain the issue and get scheduled for PT. The woman who handled the call was polite, professional and quickly confirmed insurance and answered all my questions. The first session was with a very young woman named Michelle R who seemed distracted. She gave me some basic stretches I already had found for myself online and couldn't really answer my questions. I wasn't sure if she was very new to physical therapy or just distracted by the frenetic nature of the room we were in - when you enter the facility, you go down some stairs to one room where all the PT sessions go on simultaneously. The room is ringed with plastic table beds you are asked to lie on and do stretches on. In the center of the room, you can do some exercising depending on how crowded it is and there is a table where the trainers and their support staff hang out and chat. There is absolutely no privacy and you have to be comfy chatting about your personal medical history and doing potentially awkward stretches with someone lying to your right and someone lying to your left and people all over the place. If you're a germaphobe, just start crying now. The bands and weights and mats and balls were passed from person to person with no cleaning in between that I saw. My "trainer," Michelle, was distracted at our following sessions and she booked more than one patient per session. At one, she had three of us she was going between, which rendered her totally incapable of overseeing our exercises, make sure we didn't fall off our plastic tables or injure ourselves. Luckily, I found another provider who is terrific and made me very glad I switched and it's possible it was just the one "trainer" who was kind of checked out, but, based on my experience, I would not recommend this group. read more

COULDN'T GIVE A HIGHER RECOMMENDATION. Great team! Went here for about 3 months and have never received such great care in my 3 bouts of physical therapy. Mohit was my therapist, but everyone helps out. Everyone is so friendly and I was truly sad to 'graduate' from PT. The exercises are really helpful both in house and at home. You always start with a hands on warm up which is the best part of the whole session. I never want to be hurt again, but I hope to find a reason to get back there :) read more

I have absolutely loved my time at SPEAR with Kathryn Maykish. I love working with Kathryn because she is so smart and also so sensitive to my pain. She is able to adapt exercises and manipulations with whatever I come in presenting! I really like the way Kathryn explains to me what we are doing and why, it helps me stay motivated to do the exercises at home to relieve pain. Kathryn is also just a really nice person to spend time, which is important to me when I'm seeing someone weekly! Kathryn is a pelvic floor specialist which can be kinda awkward and uncomfortable, but she made me feel so comfortable and empowered!!! I am so pleased to say that so much of my pain has been eliminated!!!! I have loved working with Kathryn, and because of our hard work, I don't get to see her as often :( I hiiiiighly recommend her! read more
