I'll get a little personal to explain my five star review…read more.. I have a child with Autism and anxiety. I have anxiety and depression as well (to the point where I'm on disability from work). We are still functioning and find animals very relaxing. I've been a cat owner my entire life and we've also adopted rescue animals. We tried adopting through both the Vancouver SPCA and the Cat Cafe. I found the staff and volunteers were often uninformed about the animals. When we did find an animal that would be well suited to us - we were often told that it was already pending adoption. I tried to explain that it was devastating to my child (age 12) to meet and bond with an animal, only to be told it wasn't available. They refused to hold animals, so we could meet them and, if suitable, adopt without being told, "Oops, this one is already spoken for". An acquaintance of mine used to work for RAPS and often posted available cats on her Facebook page. I saw a beautiful, big black cat named "Nero". I called them and explained our unique situation and how we had found difficulty with other agencies. They invited me to submit an online application and come down to meet the cat. I did. He was perfect. They agreed to hold him for a day and a half so my son could meet him. We adopted him and he is a pleasure. My son is less anxious at night with the newly named, "Oliver" in his room and sleeps better. I hang out with him during the day. The staff were all so kind and professional to us. I can't praise or thank them enough.

I do respect RAPS for the tremendous work they do for the benefit of animals. I visited the shelter earlier to-day as I was interested in a small poodle which was offered for adoption. The animal was presented to me held on a tight leash by the shelter person, who was standing with the pet behind a metal fenced door. The pet's look was of friendliness and curiosity. I chatted with the attendant and requested that I be allowed to hold the dog on its leash. The attendant refused saying that the dog can be aggressive and she cannot allow him being handled by a visitor. If really the shelter believes that a small pet is so dangerous that it cannot be offered for walking a few steps on leash with a potential adopter and that it must be kept behind a strong fence which only their handler can access, then in my opinion this shelter is irresponsible in offering the cute little monster for adoption. The reason I'm granting them 2 stars instead of one, is because their personnel at the reception has been kind and helpful.

I came across SlowBlink Cattery while looking for a Maine Coon breeder in the Greater Vancouver…read morearea. After a thorough search and conversations with various breeders, I stumbled upon SlowBlink. Mia, the owner, stood out with her extensive knowledge of cat health and nutrition. She was incredibly kind and patient, taking the time to address my concerns about purchasing a kitten without breeding rights. She offered me several options, and we found one that suited me perfectly. As a new cat owner, I valued Mia's ability to accurately assess the kitten's condition based on my brief description. SlowBlink's expertise and the inclusion of first-month insurance provided me with a strong support system in the initial stages of bringing home my kitten. Thanks to their guidance, I was able to confidently reserve a beautiful kitten. I wholeheartedly recommend SlowBlink to anyone searching for a trustworthy and caring place to find their new feline companion. --T and D's mum.

Shadow sustained six wounds during his stay at Jet Pet Resort from February 10th to February 18th…read more2018. He was assessed by three veterinarians and was given supplements, shots, and medication for his injuries. Veterinarians described Shadow's more serious wounds as follows: -"2cm long full-thickness laceration upper right thigh" which was also assessed as a "grade III/IV (3/4) bite wound which could develop into an abscess" -"1 cm long close-to-full thickness laceration upper left thigh" -"A deep 2cm scrape over pelvis" -"A large 15cm diameter area of deep bruising on right shoulder". Jet Pet Resort staff members and manager, Fay Egan, were unable to provide information and details on how or when Shadow sustained his injuries. Although, I completely understand that things like this can happen, it is quite concerning when I'm told no one witnessed Shadow sustaining these wounds, and their Pet First Aid-certified staff members were unable to assess the severity of the wound and did not call a vet even though a Veterinary Medical Release form was signed. Although Shadow's boarding service plus daycare visits at Jet Pet Resort have been refunded, our trust has been lost. We were left with unanswered questions and a wounded beloved pet. Shadow is resting a lot and is healing at a steady pace. I hope Shadow's injuries will alert and remind all the pet owners out there to be extra careful and perform thorough body checks on pets prior and after services at any boarding/daycare facility as I do not wish this upon anyone's beloved pet.

RAPS Cat Sanctuary

RAPS Cat Sanctuary

RAPS stands for Regional Animal Protection Society. It's a non profit no-kill animal services…read moreagency, located in Richmond, BC. It was founded in 1989 as Richmond Homeless Cats, re-named Richmond Animal Protection Society in 2007, and ten years later, in 2017, re-named Regional Animal Protection Society. RAPS runs an animal hospital, thrift shops, and a cat sanctuary. The RAPS Cat Sanctuary takes in feral, abandoned, and surrendered cats. While some cats are adopted out, the sanctuary is a permanent home for many of the cats. It is one of the largest cat sanctuaries in North America, and they currently have nearly 400 cats! The cat sanctuary is open to visitors Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm to 4pm during the spring and summer, and from 1pm to 4pm on Sundays only during the fall and winter. The admission price is a reasonable $15 (plus tax), and the website sells tickets in one hour blocks -- 1pm, 2pm, or 3pm, suggesting you must arrive on the hour and can only stay for an hour. However, one of the volunteers told us that you don't need to buy tickets online, you can just show up and buy one in person, and you can stay for as long as you want, as long as they are not beyond capacity. They can only allow 50 people in at a time, and on the rare occasion it gets extremely crowded, you may be asked to leave after an hour. But basically, you can show up and stay until closing. My husband and I went on Saturday at 1pm, and we stayed for about 1.5 hours. It was a beautiful sunny day and I would love to return and just stay and read a book, petting a kitty cat (another visitor was doing that very thing). If you like cats, the RAPS Cat Sanctuary is a must visit place. The sanctuary is quite large, and despite there being many visitors and volunteers (all the volunteers were friendly and awesome) and tons of cats, it never felt crowded -- there was plenty of space. The sanctuary has some areas where visitors are not permitted, but there are many areas, inside and outside, where visitors are permitted, including a lovely outside garden and courtyard. Most of the cats are free to roam wherever they want (the cats with FIV, leukemia, and certain health conditions have to stay in certain areas), and wherever you looked, there was a cat -- a cat on a chair, a cat in a box, a cat standing at your feet, a cat above you... cats, cats, cats everywhere! It was awesome! The volunteers strongly warn you (and you must sign a waiver) that you pet at your own risk. Some cats are spicier than others (the very spicy cats have collars on them, and the friendliest, adoptable cats have bandanas), and it's up to the cats whether you can pet them or not. Most cats were fine with getting pets, and the ones that didn't want pets would let you know. I was petting one cat (Jackie), and she then started hitting me on my arm (it didn't hurt). But most cats were friendly. There was one senior cat, who had diabetes, named Blaze -- she was so friendly and I was kissing and hugging her. If our cat, Bruno, would allow another cat, it would have been so tempting to adopt her, despite her diabetes. The volunteers give you a small cup of cat treats (you can always get a refill), and one cat was such a piggy! My husband gave him many treats, and when I tried to give treats to another cat sitting in a box near him, the piggy cat would aggressively run over and steal the treat. I had to put the treats inside the box so that the other cat could have some! My husband and I loved the sanctuary, and we will definitely go back! One volunteer said that we were smiling the entire time we were there. I have also started donating $25 a month to the sanctuary. If you love cats, go visit, and please donate!
