When I got there the nurses assumed my dog had the parvo virus because I told them he had bloody stool (which was not the case by the way, I went to a wonderful vet clinic after this one which diagnosed him with gastritis), called my dog an "It", made me wait outside the clinic with him, only to tell me 10 minutes later that they were full today. I have been in touch with this, as well as many other shelters and rescues in Florida, since my beloved rescue dog passed. What a disgrace. I have decided to get another dog, the same breed as the one that I lost, and carefully chose rescues I wanted to home. I spent my time filling out application after application, only to not receive a reply. I have excellent Vet, grooming and personal references, my husband and I are retired (early), are healthy and we travel in our trailer. We own our home, with a fenced yard and can financially provide for the dog. I'm a retired RN, with rescue experience. So, what is the problem? I live in a neighboring state. At present, there are only two of the breed I'm seeking available in my state and they are seniors. Although I have no problem with adopting a senior dog, at this time, I'm still grieving my little angel and I'd prefer to have a younger dog, up to the age of 5 years. So I spend my time, answering question after question, waiting and hoping I'll receive an acknowledgement and I hear nothing. So I call to follow up and am told that because I'm not a resident of Florida, I'm not eligible. I believe the idea is to home these disadvantaged dogs into a home where they will be safe, cared for and loved. I truly don't believe they visit all the homes of all the dogs, throughout their lifetimes. I'd believe that would be close to impossible. I have no problem having someone from a local rescue near me do a home check and send a report, or I could video anything they asked me to. I understand that they want to insure the dog will be safe in their new environment, and a home inspection should be done. If I lived in Pensacola I would be able to adopt from Miami, but unfortunately, I live closer, in S.C. and that is not acceptable, but is not indicated in their listings on Petfinder.com. So, I am left with no choice, but having to contact a breeder and buying from a puppy mill. Isn't that who causes the problem in the first place? So sad, I feel bad for the poor dogs denied a good home, and I feel spited by the rescues in Florida and their narrow-minded rules. read more

I scheduled an appointment for my pet to be examined in hopes of knowing what she specifically has and what SPCA Florida can do about it because prior to that she was ill. When i checked in, i sat down waiting for her name to be called, in high hopes thinking these "veternarians" WILL do something about this but i was wrong.The only thing they did was ask me questions on my dogs health so that they can type it into their system i guess? i told them what was wrong with my dog (vomiting and diahreaa) etc, but instead what they did was radio in others in their facility to de-sanitized/disinfect this and that location which i understand why they would do that to stop the spread of whatever illness my dog has which they failed to even tell me? The only thing they provided me was a list of clinics and hospitals. I thought this was a clinic/hospital? i also was escorted out through their emergency exit or back door w.e you wanna call it and was told "sorry". sorry for what? sorry for me and my ill dog?sorry that they failed to do their job?what are they sorry for? on their https://www.spcamedical.org/ page it states that "Our experienced vetenarians are dedicated to making every visit a positive expierence for both you & your pet." i left that place questioning if those vetenarians truly care about animals within their heart and soul and not for a quick paycheck.I do have more to say and can go more into details but this where ima end it off and go look for the postitive side of this whole experience because I KNO theres always a negative and a positive side to evrything! Everyone here has a passion for animals and even the veterinarians are kind to everyone . I've fostered animals from here and have seen their growth up to when they're adopted. I adopted Mimi (she was named "Mary" and I didn't feel good about that name.....so I immediately called her Mimi...it works a lot better.... That was 6 months ago, she will be 5 years old next month....She is delightful ! I had 2 cats before her who passed after the age of 20....like humans they're all different... loved them as well. I have had 2 dogs neutered here and I could not recommend their medical clinic more. I did not have a difficult time making an appointment and their prices beat out the cost of a private vet. Both my dogs had the "cold therapy" treatment after their procedures and they were back to their normal selves after only a few days. It's evident the staff cares a great deal for the animals and frequently go the extra mile. Wouldn't take my puppies anywhere else. read more

Don't walk away from this place....RUN! I originally started taking my Gypsy here because a friend told me they were good. THAT has not been my experience. 1st, it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get someone on the phone, and when they do call you back, it's usually 1-2 days later. 2nd, in the past, when I've taken my Fur Babies to the Vet (ANY Vet), I've always went back WITH them, and any procedure that needs to be done (blood draw, examinations, ect) is done WITH me in the room. THAT has not been the case with this establishment. Not sure WHY I can't be in the room when my Pet is being examined, but, I let it go. This morning was the last straw. My Fur Baby was scheduled for a Neuter this morning, and I was even sent a confirmation text to confirm from the SPCA (5850 Brannen Rd S, Lakeland, FL 33813). Upon arrival at the location, I could see a line forming by other people dropping off their Fur Babies. When it was my turn to pull up, I was asked by a staff member if I felt comfortable dropping Gypsy off as NO Doctors had shown up. They were not sure IF any Doctors were coming in due to the storm, however, I would be notified. ???????. Of course, my answer was NO. How can this be?! The staff shows up, but the Doctors don't? IF any arrangements needed to be made by the Doctors, they should be done DAYS in advance......this storm was NOT a surprise. THIS tells me that management is either incompetent, or they simply DON'T care about their Customers time, OR their Pets. Not letting my Gypsy eat, or drink ALL NIGHT is very stressful. I took my Fur Baby home to feed/water him, AND look for another Vet that cares about their Customers, and their Pets. read more

The staff is very friendly and helpful, and if there's a question you have that they don't know the answer to, they are more then happy to find the answer for you. Great selection of cats who need good hones there. I adopted my Loki (bear being his former name) from this location. He is so used to people that you can do anything to this cat, including walking him on a harness next to my dog for our daily exercise. read more

My Granddaughter took her male cat to be spayed and was told they would call when He was ready. She had to be there at 7 am which because we live in Frostproof she left our house at 5:30 am to get there timely. She was the first one in and expected that she would hear from them by 2 pm. We left our house at 2 pm to take her husband to work and called to find out when he would be ready. She was told to just show up at 5:30 to pick him up. We showed up at the center at 5 pm to pick her cat up they were not ready to get all the cats out of the center at that time. They finally at 6 pm told her they needed $35 more because his testicle did not drop which she was told might happen but they did not call her and tell her this was the case and when she called they did not tell her still. When we got the poor dear in the car he smelled like he was left in cat pee or spray all day even after his surgery he was laying in pee for hours. We checked his surgical site and it looked as if they grabbed his skin and sewed it very much like they could not care how they took care of him. It was so sad to see this treatment of our beloved cat that they had saved from being thrown out of a moving truck in a MacDonald's bag and have raised him as a beloved pet. This is not how we got him back. They don't care how they treated her or the beloved cat. This place was horrible to us and the cat. Don't go there unless you have no other choice. read more

If I could leave a no star I would! Their proficiency for dealing with walk-ins is insane! Usually when people walk in with an animal it's usually for an injury/medical problem that can't wait to be seen for an appointment 1-2 weeks out ( upper respiratory, ear infection, ect ). To wait 3-5 hours to be "worked in" is absurd. If they would just work them in an an appropriate amount of time, no one would wait more than 30 mins. Poor staff work ethics, and laziness all around. I scheduled an appointment for my dog to get his yearly checkup at 11 am. I decided to leave at 12 when we hadn't been called back but people who showed up after us were already in a room. Why have people even schedule an appointment if you are not going to see them at that time. When we were already home at 1230 I recieved a call saying they were ready to see us and I told the lady we had already left. An hr and a half later your ready to see us? Really? We will not be returning and will find another doctor. If your short staffed then you might want to hire more people or stop making appointments on the day your already booked. read more

I have been going to the SPCA clinic in South Lakeland for years. I have always been very happy with the way my dogs are treated. The Vet and the assistants are very helpful and caring. I normally would give this a perfect score of 5 stars. However, I have a sick dog and have been trying for two days to contact the clinic. It rings and rings, asks if you want to leave a message,then doesn't allow me to leave a message. I am very disappointed in the way the phones are being handled at this location. read more

I recently took my very sick little doxie in for help I was so upset and he was so sick with very little money available for treatment the amazing staff at the SPCA located funding for my sweet little boy and gave him a chance for life. It was touch and go for a while with my little bubba, these angels at the spca called and checked on him daily they were so caring and compassionate with my baby and myself I will forever thanks them for the wonderful care that they showed us. The Dr that treated my bubba clearly has a heart of gold she was a almost as happy as I was when bubba took a turn and started improving and today's Dr appointment, he was doing great!!! My husband and I have adopted several times from the SPCA here in Lakeland. Each time the service was great. Our current Lab mix (from the SPCA) has been going to the SPCA clinic for her usual shots, etc. (several times). Same with our cats. We have always been happy with the Vet's knowledge and friendliness. The staff has always been courteous and helpful as well. We want the best for our furkids but we also want it to be reasonable and that's why we choose the SPCA. read more

The SPCA used to be a great place to take animals for treatment - not anymore. It's impossible to get an appointment within 2 weeks, even if the animal is sick. They used to allow ( actually recommend) dropping the pet off in the morning and picking up late in the day to allow them to examine the pet as time permitted. I was just told today they do not do that. I have always supported the SPCA with donations, both personal and by participating in the annual walk for the animals, but I don't feel the money is being used wisely if they can't treat sick animals. I will be taking my donations and pets elsewhere. read more

Walked into the SPCA in Lakeland fl this afternoon after calling to see if they did walk-ins and my answer was yes. Drove all the way there, meanwhile my dog is throwing up in the car because he has horrible car sickness and was told they stopped doing walk ins for the day. So, I asked about hours tomorrow and was told rudely by three young girls that it starts at 8 but the walk ins close whenever they want them to. So I was offered no help at all , the rude women in the front didn't offer any advice or try to give me any information about my dogs issue and certainly didn't offer to see if they could squeeze him in. Horrible front desk people and I would never go back if it wasn't for my little dogs issue. I will NEVER adopt a dog from them just because I know when I have a dog they don't care enough to see him but they will gladly try to sell me another. What jerks. read more

My dog was hit by a car yesterday and we rushed him to the Lakeland SPCA veterinary clinic. We started having his shots done here due to the cost effective pricing, but had never had to take him there for a problem. They exceeded expectations! He was bleeding badly and they rushed him to surgery and worked with us on the cost. The Dr and vet techs were wonderful and helped us calm down. I have adopted two cats from SPCA though petco. Everytime I adopt a kitten they are always sick for example my first cat I got a year ago was sick with a urinary track infection. Which is very uncommon for a kitten to get at 3 months. We ended taking the poor thing to 3 to 4 times to SPCA this is a problem. Now yet a year later I have adopted another kitten a year from SPCA. My kitten now is sick having diarrhea and has a fever. Now I did ask the doctor if my kitten was getting sick because of them spaying her at early age my kitten is now 2 months old. Now the doctor she could be spayed if was over 2 pounds at the time she was only 1.3pounds and the doctor ended not only contradicting herself in a lie and said was 2 pounds when in fact she 1.3 pounds a month ago when they spayed her in SPCA. Also everytime I come in to SPCA. It's seems to be disorganised, works are always chatting with one other and not properly helping customers. I don't know about you but everytime I come in SPCA I have problem. They should give away sick cats up for adopt if they are not properly treated! read more

I am very disappointed with the customer service we received at the Lakeland, FL SPCA. Yesterday 9/9/14 I took my girlfriend there to buy a puppy. We found one we really liked and adopted him. We were informed that he had kennel cough which is fine with us and they sent us home with his antibiotics. Today his cough sounded worse than before so as we were informed we could take him to any vet of our choice and submit a claim for the charges for his visit as long as it was within the first 30 days of adoption. So we took him to the vet and the said he had pneumonia. Doing the right thing we called the SPCA and informed them of the situation because our puppy was in a litter of 3 other puppies and we didn't know if they were sick to. When I got on the phone with the lady instead of listening to our situation she proceeded to tell me that I was confused and I didn't know what I was talking about. She said I should have brought the puppy to their clinic as long as it was within the first ten days of adoption. We were not informed of that option AT ALL. When asked what I was to do if our puppy happed to die she said she wasn't sure what she could do for us and they would try to get us another puppy and try to work with us. Bottom line is they don't tell you the little things you need to know and the customer service skills SUCK! I know the dog is our responsibility now and we are doing everything possible to get him better but I thought they would be a little more appreciative for us trying to inform them of the situation.....we will never go there again to adopt a pet. read more

The first time I went to the medical center the vet was amazing and checked my dogs tuck and body structure standing up. This last time I had a new vet she was rude and had no facts to back anything she said up. She said my dog was almost the size of a pillow pet while she was on her side and in heat. when my dog is standing up she has a nice tuck and you can feel one rib. She then goes to tell me that my dogs ancestors are not wolves and that wolves only live for 2 years. She compliments my dogs coat and then when asked what I feed my dog and I mentioned raw meat she tells me I'm killing my dog and then ask if I wouldn't eat raw meat why feed it to my dog. My reply was I'm not a dog! (A dog has a ph balance of 2 a shorter digestive tract and its teeth are made to rip meat!) She then criticized me for wanting to wait till she was two to spay I just don't feel comfortable doing it any earlier she then replies oh you're gonna give her cancer if you wait that long. This vet had no actual facts to back one thing she said I was tempted just to walk out and just pay for she had already done. Will no longer be coming here at all. read more

I don't know if the SPCA of Bartow, FL, is a private organization but they seem to have little interest in their mission. I called several weeks ago and did get one call back on my voice mail, but after that I have had to play phone-tag with the woman in charge. I finally got to talk to her last Friday but she said she was at the office and her computer was down (meanwhile there was a screaming child in the background and I got the distinct feeling she was at home.) She said she would call me back in 20 minutes with an appointment date for surrender. I've never heard from her since (that was a week ago.) I called the shelter today and tried to get some information from the young woman who answered the phone. When I mentioned the unfulfilled promise to call back in 20 minutes, her demeanor shifted and she became surly. She also lied to me; she told me the SPCA was a kill shelter. When I pressed her about it, she then said only in certain circumstances (disease and too feral). And then she told me my only hope was the Polk County Animal Control (which always has a busy signal.) This is what we get when we privatize basic and necessary agencies; dysfunction and low quality people to deal with. This is also what we get when we vote for austerity and Right-wing ideology; more dysfunction. It's a real mess and I really don't see these people making any genuine effort to do a good job; they are too busy being arrogant and punitive. read more
