To be fair to Spatch, before I get into this, the four stars reflects my actual eating experience because I ordered their stuff from Deliveroo, and short as the journey was, by the time I got to eat it it had lost a little of its restaurant-freshness; the skin was no longer crispy but I could tell it once had been, and the chicken had dried out a bit.
I had the half chicken with BBQ sauce, collard greens (actually mangetout and kale, fried in I think butter) and corn on the cob, because I was going healthy, bwa ha ha ha.
First off, Spatch, don't call them collard greens. Collard greens are a specific thing. These were collard greens' European cousins. Having said that, they were freaking delicious. Turns out that well-seasoned mangetout and kale sautéed in butter can be crisp, tasty and luscious. Blackened corn on the cob had that great scorched taste and was also basted in butter.
Finally the chicken: despite having dried out a bit, it was really good, lemony and peppery and moreish, and instead of being the usual boring sugary blanket the BBQ sauce, while sweet, had a sharp vinegary kick which really lifted the chicken. I liked that it was served in a little pot for dipping; I don't know if it comes like that in the restaurant. It's a great sauce.
I notice that one other reviewer thought the chicken a bit dry. Maybe that's an issue with rotisserie chicken, but this place does the details very well. I'd love to have eaten this in the restaurant, and I'd definitely pay a visit next time. read more
