It's very hard to criticise a place that's great value with mostly quality food. That said I only…read morebuy a few items here - for fresh I go for fillet steak, pork fillet, chicken breast and pork mince (5% fat). So all meat is from Irish farms and I believe the quality of Irish meat is always excellent. The fillet steak is 32 day dry aged. Most steak in the USA is wet aged which is cheaper and produces an inferior product. For frozen it's their Greenland cold water prawns. They are again wonderful quality and taste. The last day I was there they were selling snow peas at 49 cents a bag and 500gm of red grapes at €1.29. Wonderful value for great produce and they often have real deals on fresh veg. So I bought a half dozen of each. The new normal is that you may have to stand outside a while as numbers are now limited. This is ok in an Irish summer (which this year is lousy). They provide hand sanitizer on entry. The only other downside is that they don't have many check out staff so again you can queue there a while too but it's the rub of the green here as the prices are so competitive.

Now let's be clear, as with the last time I reviewed it, I'm not reviewing the Tesco but the Costa coffee bar within the Tesco. This Tesco has a similar design to quite a few others with vast free car parking underneath and the supermarket one floor up. Dundalk now has about 4 Costa stores. This Costa which is dark good is on the 1st floor concourse, not far from the escalator, with about 30/40 seats. The staff are a friendly bunch and it seems to get by on very few staff. It has a good range of sweet and savoury food and their flat white coffee is exceptionally tasty. The inexplicable bit is the 50% cost uplift in comparison to Northern Ireland.

The place is lovely - the café is filled with light and plants and the surroundings are beautiful. My brother loved his herbed rice bowl and I liked the organic porridge with fruit and the pistachio plum cake. The only kink was that several items arrived much later than the food - the coffees, bread, and honey for my porridge (I had already finished my porridge by then). The store is filled with great stuff - fresh fruit and veg, and a good selection of some of the most ethical products. Weirdly, the Strandfield website contains no info other than an address, so you have to rely on reviews to get info in advance. The lunch menu is mostly comprised of sourdough pizza, salads (including a quinoa bowl and herbed rice bowl), and sandwiches - see menu photo. There are also lots of bakery items, including freshly baked scones, cakes and wheaten bread (which was really good - I bought one to take home). I'm giving Strandfield café 4.5 out of 5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, for these reasons: · I didn't actually notice at the time but the menu is 100% vegetarian! · Strandfield uses free range eggs from their own farm. · My porridge was made with organic oats · Flowers and plants in the café come from Stranfield's own nursery · The grocer sources local and organic fruits and vegetables along free range eggs, and organic health foods · The store stocks a really good selection of ethical goods - I could do most of my shopping here if I lived here. · Strandfield would benefit from providing more info (on the website or menu) on ingredient sourcing.

Well the review is straightforward - Tesco at the Longwalk has been closed for a very long time now. The building is very run down and could benefit from being bulldozed. Tesco is now located on the southern outskirts of the town about a mile from this dump.

The great thing is they usually have free samples which is a great way to try before you buy. The butchers does really great meat and they have a handy little deli counter. This branch is really spacious and everything is easy to find. They offer the superscan option, where you scan your own products as you shop and then just bring the receipt to the counter and pay. And they have recently introduced self scan check outs. The shop is usually pretty packed and queues are really long, but this can be avoided by using the self scan check outs. If you have the money to spare, or want to get some quality food and do not mind spending that bit extra, at least check out the bakery section
