She is a truly special teacher who you can tell loves language and knows so much about it's history (and film!). One time she taught our class with the begins of what turned out to be laryngitis (over Zoom of course) because she wanted to make sure we had class. And it was as perfect of a class as every night! So thoughtful of her students schedules. She's amazing and really makes for a joyful experience. It can be a bit intimidating, especially as a beginner, but the curriculum makes you feel comfortable! Doesn't throw you in the deep end too early. Classes right now are over Zoom which is perfect with Covid. I took a class previously with Deirde in person, pre covid, and I think the zooms today are just as good (and so much easier on working parents!) Also the class size is small (5‐6) so you get to know your classmates and lots of opportunity to pratice what you're learning. The class is structured to be lots of talking that is guided by Deidre and the written lessons. You do your reading and written work as homework every week on your own. One bonus is that she also gives you lots of fun recommendations of things to try in your spare time: games with music videos, other lessons to watch on youtube, things to listen to in your car if you're stuck in traffic.

We spend a…read moreportion of each class just asking and discussing questions that are unknown to us before the start of class, so you get tons of time to practice talking on the fly. Plus, Deidre tailors the discussions to things she's learned about us personally, for instance asking how our dogs are, or whether a new job is interesting. Between classes, the written lessons introduce subjects at the perfect pace, and with explanations that only a native speaker or linguist can provide. Often, we learn how a word or phrase is different between different Spanish-speaking countries. This is something subtle that apps on your phone just can't do. Additional exercises are plentiful and well tuned to the week's subject. I've already recommended Live the Language to lots of people. It's smart, affordable, and personal. The format and instructor's attitude are perfect for folks with a job. Oh, and make sure to ask for a "guest lecture" from Deidre's mom, Kateri -- she's not afraid to tell you "how they actually say that."

There are also lots of other interesting things in the store as well. Though I wouldn't shop here if it weren't for the supplies I need as a Chinese medicine student. They also won't sell needles to the general public, which I like. You can, however, buy whatever herbs you like, but you should always have either Chinese medicine training or have a prescription from someone who does, because otherwise you won't know what you're doing. You can't just pick an herbal formula labeled simply for "stress" like you can in Western medicine. It doesn't work like that. I've never received any treatments from interns so I can't vouch for that, but I hear they're awesome. Their staff is very friendly and know me and my friends by name because we frequent there so much. :o) Plus! Every day they have a deal going on. I know Monday their herbs are 10-15% off, but I can't remember what the other days are.

I got some really cool stone carved elephants on the cheap, and a neat wood happy Buddha. They have some good flavors of Dagoba bars that I can't find elsewhere (chai) and sometimes some cool zenish clothes. I also like the one on Anderson for post Korea-house sushi shopping. I know they have all kinds of herbal medicine but I have not delved as of yet.

Gary showed me that his abilities and patience extend to all age ranges and skill levels. He researched my son's camera prior to the course and was able to answer all questions, as well as preemptively show us how to artistically approach shots from different angles and focal points. My eleven year old emerged out of the session with a better understanding of photography than myself (at least pretty close to it) and an experience which he hasn't stopped talking about yet!

That didn't go over well. When we would try to teach him or tell him to fix a letter, etc, he would flip out, get angry, break his pencil in frustration. There was no way to get through to him. We didn't know what to do or where to go. As parents we were lost and frustrated. Enter GradePower. We were told about GradePower through a friend. We immediately scheduled a consultation with Gordon. Let me tell you Gordon is super nice, understanding, and knowledgeable. He listens and answer all your questions. Also, Gordon understands kids that struggle with learning or need help, as he was in their shoes once. Nick is also an amazing person, I swear they have the nicest, calmest, most understandable people working here. Our son is thriving we see it in his work. We see it in his confidence. We will be sending our daughter here once she gets into the higher grades. Oh and they are on top of everything. We have scheduled check-ins with Gordon and or Nick who give us feedback on how are son is doing, showing us his work, showing us his growth but also telling us what he needs to work on. However, the past few times that I have been here, the hot tub has been closed off and I also ended up getting an ear infection for the first time :( Makes me question the hygiene and sanitization practices at this pool. They even have painters come in during pool hours so the entire enclosed space is filled with paint smell and fumes.

Even though it's okay here, I'd still recommend this YMCA. Just a few odd quirks here and some…read moreundesirable effects. First off the parking here is a challenge. Spaces are too small, and you can guarantee your car getting dinged. Mine already has, and I was even in the car when she did it, I confronted her and she just gave me a nasty look and did not apologize. I had to leave it at that since she had a small child with her, but she apparently didn't give AF. I've noticed similar behaviors with other patrons who park there. I use the pool here - it's outside. Most of the inside of this place is carpeted, which is quite odd, when you come in from the pool or the spa or indoor pool you walk on carpet and the carpet gets drenched. Not good. I detest that you have to walk all the way through various hallways and by the gym and the other pool to get to the locker room if you're coming / going to the outside pool. Kinda feels like you're at a hotel and having to walk down the carpeted hallway bypassing several rooms / areas in your swimsuit, or if you're wet with a towel. The indoor pool is fine, but when they hold those Zumba courses there - that Zumba instructor is - how can I saw this - irritating to say the least. She has forced a rule - you cannot turn on the jacuzzi jets during her classes because it's too loud and they cannot hear or talk to each other. This has been a bothersome rule for years now, and many of us have complained, yet this Zumba instructor wins all the time. I get it when you have a full pool of people, but some of her Zumba classes have only 4-6 people attending, they take over the whole indoor pool, she blasts the music so damn loud it's like you're at a club, and they don't talk to each other anyway so WTF?? They could use the other half of the pool (away from the jacuzzi) since there's only 6 of them, so everyone can use the facilities, but after complaining about this - I was rejected. I was also informed by several other members - they have complained too but have also been rejected. It's irritating AF and it's not respectful when there is no compromise. The basketball court is smaller here. The weight room is open and carpeted. The showers are okay, the bathrooms at times could be cleaner, the men's locker room is on the smaller side and quite compacted for space. The outside pool - it's heated during the winter time and it's open all year round. Swam the other day - it was 75 degrees outside temps and pool was 88 degrees, it was nice. But once you get out of the pool - yikes. But it's a nice change of pace here. They just updated the deck space around the pool. Service here has always been nice. Never had a bad experience with the any of them, all very responsive and answer my questions and good customer service. I don't frequent here as much but will go sometimes if it's convenient for my schedule. Can we just work out the Zumba lady and jacuzzi jets please?
