Humboldt is an interesting jam. Various sources report that a goodly portion of the local economy…read moreis inexorably linked to the cultivation of various... plants. Similarly, plenty of residents of the permanent, transient, and collegiate varieties dabble in green thumbery for personal or profitable reasons. And without the slightest judgment thereof from this Yelper, any horticultural effort that will result in any level of success requires both the correct supplies to get the job done, and the knowledge to apply things with the right frequency, timing, order, and amounts. All that as prologue to my stop in at Big Daddy. Fully a tourist on my trip, I ducked in to see what this store was all about. While it was essentially stocked with the usual garden center stuff, there were whole aisles dedicated to nutrients, soil and substrate amendments, containers... if you need it, it seemed to be here. I can't say I interacted with staff here... come to think of it, I don't recall being approached by or pursuing help from anyone while I was there. Per other reviews, this isn't the only game in town, and what do I know as a "just passing thru" guy contemplating next season's back yard tomatoes? But all in all, if you have a rudimentary understanding of things like 12-12 and 16-8 lighting, you know guano from guava, and can explain how NPK values change outcomes, you should be able to find what you need here without getting your socks wet.

I can't say it's practical or some place I would frequent if living there, but for those passing through or the more touristy visitors, it's a welcome stop over with a fun selection of unique items. I would describe the inventory as a mix between upscale household items with a practical use and more decorative goods, like pillows and hats and bags. There was everything from drawer and shelf organizers to crafts from local artists to some hats that folded up that my wife was very tempted to buy. None of it is cheap, mind you, but considering the location and the effort they've put into curating such an inventory, the prices are totally understandable. The two ladies who worked there were both nice and even opened up for us when they were technically closed but saw us peering through the window. This was my absolute worst experience with Home Depot's customer service department EVER! I was (not) helped by a young woman named Lily. I don't know how a company would hire somebody with that terrible of customer service skills to be their on site manager. but once I raised enough chaos with other cashiers, I found another manager that was totally willing to help me? and they resolved my situation with store credit. (Amazing!) I was absolutely blown away that somebody would tell me to "sell it on eBay" as my only other option since they couldn't 'prove' that I actually purchased this item in the store. Somehow, my bank records were not enough. I knew exactly what register I bought it on, and we went to that register and looked up the history, found it, and resolved it very quickly!! ... albeit no thanks to Lily. Hanna, the other supervisor on duty for cashiers was AMAZING!!!!! So helpful, nice, and had empathy that totally refreshed my faith. What is up with the younger generation??! No social skill, empathy, or general pleasantness. Like you are being paid to help customers specifically... do the job don't patronize me. Thank you Hanna!!!!
