So nice, I went twice. Once for a prenatal massage by the beach and another time for a facial. I enjoyed both of my treatments. The talent of the therapists and estheticians is wonderful and some of the best I've come across. The locker and shower area is clean and classy. Some say it's outdated, but I felt it was fine and comparable to what I've seen in Vegas and California. My only gripe is the amenities. The dry sauna was working, but the steam room was not. My husband gifted me a one hour massage at this location for my birthday. The facility is pretty nice and even has a dry sauna as well as a steam sauna. They provide you with water to hydrate, showers to rinse off after treatment, body lotion, shampoo, etc. While all this is nice I have to say that I had the worst massage ever. The massage therapist was very nice but it felt as if she wasn't trained well. She didn't really move well over the body, was working on different areas, constantly switching back and forth, not warming up the muscle and then working it. When I asked for more a bit more pressure since it was supposed to be a deep tissue massage she opted to jam her elbow into my cold muscles. I really couldn't wait for the massage to be over. After the massage I went to the steam sauna, dry sauna and then took a hot shower. That day and the next couple of days my body just hurt from the treatment, so definitely didn't get the relaxation I had hoped for, but the exact opposite. And all this for $300. I was very excited to try this spa for the first time and treat myself to a massage. The spa was nice but the automated text I received said to come early to enjoy the jacuzzi. When I got there and asked where it was it was actually not at the spa but with the hotel guests at the pool. This would not have been relaxing at all to sit in a jacuzzi with kids and hotel guests and having to walk far from the calm spa area. I was hoping to get a relaxing massage. The woman hadn't read my intake form and barely touched the areas I told her I wanted focus on. There was no flow. I felt like I was bracing myself unsure where she was going next. It was disjointed and quick movements. She just kept moving to parts of my body with no flow. She started at my feet and ended up working on my feet 3 times! The final time was for maybe 20+ minutes! I wanted my neck and back worked on so I just felt like she was trying to pass time and completely ignored my needs and wants. The foot massages weren't intricate. She was just rubbing the same part of the bottom of my foot over and over like torture. I couldn't wait to leave!! For that much money I would never go back. Super disappointing. read more

We booked our spa package weeks before our trip because we wanted the super deluxe waterfall-side massage for two. We were so excited to get this spa treatment, and even more so since the Fairmont is my favorite line of hotels, so I had high expectations. Checking in was a breeze, and we were shown to our changing rooms and lounge area. The walk from the lounge to the waterfall-side cabanas was lined with streams, fountains, and orchids, and was quite lovely. Inside, we weren't given privacy to disrobe, and instead had some weird way of taking off the bathrobe while lying down. Our therapists were decently good for the massage part, and the following facial was also ok. I did however during this time, get numerous mosquito bites, which greatly distracted me from the relaxation, and it was itchy and uncomfortable. My biggest point for improvement with the service was the facial because they didn't tell you what they were doing or what they were putting on, so when my therapist put on a stimulating masque, I had no idea why my entire face was burning, and I panicked. After the package we had a glass of water but the lounge area was overlooked by a balcony and people were watching us. Also a gardener was working in the spa lounge garden which made the area not very conducive to relaxation and zen as we were hoping. We ended up showering off early and heading home, and after an $800 bill for the experience, we felt like it was not worth the money and left us not feeling as pampered as we had hoped. read more

I was a little hesitant about booking this spa given comments about the facilities but I kept my appointment because really, how often will I be able to have a spa experience in Hawaii by the ocean? Are the comments about the facilities accurate? Absolutely. The change room is dated and there is no traditional lounge area but the rest of the resort makes up for the spa amenities at other high end spas. Really, the entire resort is like a spa and the private garden is unique and serene. I splurged on the ali'i Royal Experience in the ocean hale. It was a little awkward having to walk to the ocean hale but once you get there it is very private. The entire experience was pure bliss. The ocean waves, ocean air and the treatment made all of my worries and tension just melt away. There were a couple of times where there were some people talking behind the treatment area but they weren't there long and the hale was out-of-the-way enough that it didn't happen more than once during the 110 minute treatment. Was the experience pricey? It was par for Fairmont but the experience was nothing I have ever experienced. Would I do it again? Absolutely! read more

I don't like giving negative reviews but this was one of the most disappointing massages I've had. The huts by the ocean however were a 10/10 spectacular and amazing setting! It was so serene listening to the waves which makes it all the most infuriating that the massage itself wasn't good. I'm pretty easy to please but both the tempo and the pressure were inconsistent the entire time. The masseuse did not listen to my requests about areas to focus on or pressure. I'm sure she didn't read my pre-filled out health questionnaire and even though I repeated what I wanted in person (and asked her to avoid a bruise I had) none of that happened. There were times where there was a complete lack of massaging happening, and not because she was grabbing lotion, situating a cover etc. I was constantly wondering what the hell she was doing back there! Enjoying the stingrays in the ocean? Did she forget she was giving me a massage? Whatever she was doing it clearly was not focusing on massaging! Between the inconsistent tempo, pressure and for lack of better words laziness of the massage, it was difficult to relax. I kept hoping it would improve but it just got worse. At times it felt like she was doing nothing at all. Towards the end she rubbed my calf lackadaisically 50 times the same way, which I know because it was ridiculous and I started counting, hoping she would switch it up and try something different. Anyways my husband said his masseuse was awesome so I guess I just got the short end of the stick this time (though she was very nice). This was one memorable massage. Do yourself a favor and splurge. I wasn't happy about the cost, but I'm on vaca so why not. The indoor portion of the spa itself is outdated 90s decor. I booked a lomilomi massage in the garden (near cascading waterfall- very private but could be a bit warm if you're sensitive to heat). Yep it was pricey, but the massage was absolutely fantastic. Very relaxing, perfect pressure, couldn't hear any ambient noise except for the water (and there was no music playing in the background). I came out 80 minutes later completely relaxed and ready to watch the sunset with a Mai Tai in hand. My husband thought I looked sedated and commented that he hadn't seen me this relaxed in appearance in a long time. The services here are great. I had a 80 minute Lomi Lomi massage with Sarah and it was perhaps the best massage I've ever had. I left so relaxed. My body felt amazing. The massage was by the waterfall which was cool. I could here the waterfall and feel the open air. My wife had a facial and it was the best one she has had. Got great tips for skin care and her therapist went over the 50 minutes! Top notch services here. The rest of the spa is okay. Not a lot of amenities. Just sauna and steam room. This spa was amazing. We opted for the 80-minute Lomi Lomi couples massage next to the waterfalls (we originally booked the ocean, but due to bad weather, we changed to the waterfall). The massages were $249 per person (but make sure to sign up for the President's club to get a discount). We arrived and spent a little time in the dry sauna and steam rooms. They make everything very easy and comfortable. They provide you with a locker, robe, sandals, towels, etc. There is a dray sauna and steam room, showers, water and teas, and all of your bathroom necessities. When it's time for your massage, you go to the waiting area that is stocked with water, coffee, tea and magazines. Our masseuses then met us in the waiting area and took us to our massage "room." The massages next to the waterfalls take place in an open (but still private) bungalows where you can hear the waterfall. Our masseuses were amazing. One of the best massages I've had. read more

I really enjoyed my massage, but honestly how could you not at a place like this. The major thing this spa has going for them is that you get 3 choices of treatment location (each one increases $10)...you can have it inside, outside in a private cabana that is right next to a waterfall, or you can have it outside right on the beach (again in a private cabana). I choose a basic massage with the waterfall location, and I can say it was one of the most relaxing massages I have ever had. The sound of the waterfall is extremely soothing, and even though your are outside by the pool, you cant hear anything but the waterfall and feel the breeze outside, it was extremely tranquil. I really wanted to give this place 5 stars because the massage was incredible, a bit pricey, but you have to expect that when you come to a hotel/location like this, but the lack of other amenities in the spa really is their downfall. Once you enter the gender's side of your spa area it is very sparse, there is no hot tub or aroma therapy pools or anything like that, there is a sauna and a steam room and not that much more ( i mean there is only one bench to sit down on). Now i partially understand that most people enjoy sitting outside, which is beautiful, and in a secluded area, but for what you pay i would at least expect a jacuzzi. Listen, I work full time and have four kids. To say I like a good massage is an understatement. Over the years, that's progressed from liking a good massage to loving a good spa experience. The Fairmont Spa Without Walls is hands down one of the best of both. I've now experienced it twice and both times I walked away adding the experience to my 'best of' list - no easy feat given how many massages I've had over the years. The spa itself features great amenities. The toiletries in the locker room smell wonderful and work great. I do wish they had rubber bands for women, but that's a really small gripe. Once out of the locker room, enjoy reading a book or magazine in comfy chairs situated next to waterfalls and koi ponds. You have several options for treatment rooms: inside, outside next to a waterfall or outside next to the ocean. I've chosen waterfall each time and it's incredibly relaxing. The ocean front pagodas are on a hotel walkway so I imagine there would be a decent amount of noise. By the waterfalls there was none. As well, the pagodas have glass bottoms so you can watch the fish as you receive your treatment. This trip I saw Malia for a Lomi Lomi massage and signature facial. She was AMAZING. She worked out every knot in my neck and shoulders and left my skin glowing despite all the sun I've gotten. I was in such a good mood after, my husband suggested I go back once more this trip - which is either a sign of her expertise or my level of stress (probably both!) This is a pricey spa, so be prepared. I usually just view it as my primary excursion when I'm here. It's also not necessary to stay at the hotel to experience. The grounds at the Fairmont are gorgeous and there are ample lounges. My husband had a great time enjoying Mai Tai's while I was pampered. It is pretty far north of Kona (a 45 minute drive) so we spent the day up North at Pololu Valley and the gorgeous Hapuna Beach when we drove up here. read more

I really loved the spa even though I wasn't enamored with the Fairmont Orchid. The only reason why it gets 4 stars instead of 5 stars are the outrageous prices! To have a 45 minute massage in a waterfall hale is $155. A 60 minute massage in a villa at the One and Only Palmilla is $156. So I got the Eternally Yours package which combines a massage, facial, foot and scalp massage for 105 minutes which cost $295 at the Waterfall Hale. Seems like a better deal to me. I told my husband that I saved him money by getting 2 treatments. :-) Although to add Deep Tissue it ended up costing $320. And when I went back and checked they actually overcharged me. The internet price states $265 and they actually said they would credit back my card!! Dahn was my therapist and I had 2 different people in my group recommend him. He was great. Definitely deep tissue and not afraid to dig in the important sore parts. The facilities are great. Clean. The only thing the spa didn't have was a whirlpool but I can live without that. I really liked how the dressing area was separated from the vanity area by a door. And each vanity area had a stool. I went 30 minutes early to steam, sauna, pee, and sit out in the outdoor waiting area. Very peaceful and relaxing. The waterfall hale is very lovely if you don't mind being outdoors. It was a little chillier and windy that day but I loved it. All you hear is the wind and the waterfall. I definitely recommend the spa! But if I went back to the Big Island, I would probably try the Four Seasons and their spa. If you are staying at the Fairmont, the spa will be your high point, it was for me. read more

Let me say that my massage was amazing, the whole "spa without walls" concept is incredible. You have your choice of grass huts that are dotted throughout this large garden area. Some are in the midst of waterfalls and others overlook the Ocean (these are private, mind you, with the only open side to the water). There is also a very nice reading area in the garden where you can sit and chill. My masseuse was very professional (my wife also gave her's high marks), and had command of three different techniques, swedish, lomi-lomi, and sports massage. She used all three depending on my trouble spots. If I have anything negative to say: a) this place is very expensive, I mean very (Burke Williams would blush) after tip, almost $300 for an 80 minute massage. That said, it was a unique experience. b) the indoor part of the spa is very small and rather spartanfor this level. You won't find any saline filled jacuzzi's or other fancy stuff, it's nice but very basic, a small steam room, and one shower, and some lockers. If I am being picky (and for $300 bucks each I think I can) they should improve the interior area (expand) and have stewards to get you fruit, drinks, etc. (also some magazines in English would be good). Other spas of this price range have organic martinis and all kinds of crazy stuff, and people that wait on you. I have to say, the massage staff is unsurpassed, they just need to invest a bit in infrastructure and other services. Also, the Fairmont gives you free valet parking, which was a nice touch. read more

Although this spa is one of my least favorites and needs a major makeover, it's still an okay spa in a luxury setting. I thought that having the outdoor massage tents was a nice touch but the locker room needs a lot of updating. The steam room wasn't even on when I went in there and everything is very outdated in general. The massage was not the best. My husband didn't like his massage at all. Afterward, the massage therapist pointed out that there were a few sea turtles right behind us and gave us water bottles and told us to sit and enjoy. So we did, for 20 minutes we watched the endangered green sea turtles play after our massages. This was great, but the spa itself and the service are just okay. read more

It's not about the grounds, the facilities, or the front house staff, it's about my masseuse. It was the worst massage I have ever had in my life. I did an oceanfront couples massage (the bubbling with happiness package) and my spouse and I had completely opposite experiences. I felt like my masseuse was uninterested in being there. She barely touched me. The spots I asked specifically to work on (which were upper back and calves) she spent the least time on. I actually looked back at that little paper you fill out at the beginning because I thought maybe I misread it and circled spots to avoid. No. I asked several times for stronger pressure and she would do it for one or two minutes and go back to feather light touch. Basically just running her hands over my body with no pressure. Like she was completely bored. And, this was supposed to be a Lomi Lomi massage! In the end, I was absolutely stunned. Then there is the pressure of leaving a tip. And the pressure of do I say something or not say something? We spent a lot of money for the 80 minute massage. I would expect that all of the massage therapists have been well trained and have some experience behind them. My young massage therapist (probably barely over 21) either needs to go back to school to do something else in life or get out of the top dollar resorts for a while and gain some experience elsewhere. Had a 50 minute deep tissue massage from Christine. It was amazing. Laying next to the waterfall really helped me clear my mind of work and life stress. Christine was one of the best massage therapist I have ever encountered. She was so in tune and knew exactly when to apply pressure vs. be gentle. The spa waiting room and locker room is not much and there is no jacuzzi or dipping tub, so I am docking it a star. For the past two years, my girlfriend has treated myself and another girlfriend to a "girls' spa day. Last year we went to the Spa at Mauna Lani. This year, we tried the Orchid's Spa Without Walls. The prices between the two facilities are comparable. This is not an inexpensive treat. As a splurge, though, it was heavenly. We all opted for the "package" called Exclusively Yours and selected to have our treatments by the waterfall. We were assigned a locker, robes, and flip-flops. The locker/shower area was clean and nicely appointed. A co-ed waiting area was available indoors or you could choose to wait outdoors in their beautiful gardens. Self-serve teas, water, and fruit were available. We were each taken to our own outdoor hale....a private hut situated near or over the water feature. Some hales had a plexiglass window which allowed you to gaze into the water below while being massaged. The tilt-up windows were opened and the cool breeze and the sound of water made the outside world disappear. After our treatment we luxuriated in the garden area comparing notes. The therapists were fabulous and have been with the spa for years. For those wondering which facility they should choose, this is my humble opinion..... If you want an outdoor treatment, go with the Orchid's Spa Without Walls. The outdoor hales are nicely spaced for privacy. The outdoor hales at the Spa at Mauna Lani were lined up in a row in an area that just wasn't that special. If you want an indoor treatment, go with the Spa at Mauna Lani. The indoor spa area at the Mauna Lani was nicely decorated and had a nice sitting area next to the dressing room. The outdoor showers were very nice. Your spa treatment at the Mauna Lani grants you access to their pool and jacuzzi area. The indoor shower and locker area were not as nice at the Spa Without Walls - two indoor showers and a steam room, but nothing super special....it could use a facelift. read more

Kristine was amazing, worked quickly and diligently to fix my hair that the last salon ruined.
