I have seen this place be sold from her family to someone else to the past ownership who drove this established business to the ground. It's really unfortunate how they handled things. Not paying the staff and still owing funds to their staff. I knew something was up the last visit had in Nov when my appointment was not handled properly. I hope the staff get whats owed to them. Let me start by saying that the low star review has absolutely nothing to do with the service from Tina. She did an amazing job on my nails. I have spent almost $1000 this year on GM Collin products from Spa Escape including facial masks, creams, serums, exfoliating gels, and toners. On Saturday I was offered a sample of their nutritive cream (0.24 oz) to try for dry skin. You can imagine my surprise when I was charged $1.00 for something they receive most likely for FREE to promote GM Collin products. Is that even allowed?? As a customer you will also be charged an extra $3 to put vitagel on your nails (who doesn't include this with a manicure??). I have been a loyal customer for 25 years, but I'm done being nickel and dimed by the new ownership. Make sure to check your receipt, there will be add ons you never imagined. This is my favorite spa and Karme offers excellent treatments. I always feel pampered and renewed afterwards. I love the shellac mani pedi here. Karme puts a protective coating on my nails. I had stopped getting shellac because my nails became damaged and she encouraged me to try again. I am delighted with the results! No damage and stronger nails. (I also don't try to peel them off and pay a nominal price to have old polish removed). Her massage techniques are also superb and I am looking forward to another amazing facial soon. Well... with the name spa escape, you would think that you would be transported to an atmosphere of relaxation. But this certainly was not the case with this spa. The overall atmosphere was lacking with harsh lights, and no calming music, and the waiting room had old wooden chairs to sit on. Also, the treatment room had a loud ticking clock, you can hear other guests talking through the walls, and they allow infants into the spa whether they're quiet or whether they're screaming; which they were during my hour long facial that I had. And I mean for 55 minutes of my one hour service... screaming child. So when I talk to the manager, she was apologetic and said that she wasn't able to legally gag the children or have the mother remove the children from their spa as it was the mothers legal right to bring them into the facility. That's one of the most absurd thing I've ever heard. Anyway, so she offered to give me 10% off which is nothing considering it was a horrible experience, and I asked her to give my cousin who was having a massage and probably had an even worse time than me to discounted more than 10% which she said she would but that she would have to pay for it out of her own money which I also thought was ridiculous. Why wouldn't the company cover the cost not just of hers but of everybody who was assaulted with the screams of the two twins, who are screaming for an hour in a spa.... with the name, Spa escape, which I took to meaning escape to relaxation. So the final kicker was when my cousin went to pay for her massage which was promise to be 50% off there was only a $10 discount. I'm sure this probably was a rare occurrence but the way that this manager handled the situation, and the way that she made me feel that I was being unreasonable asking for a discount to a service that was completely unacceptable to me. She even told me she was a volunteer and that she wasn't paid for her position, " I really care about people " was her direct quote when I asked her why she would work for free?....really??? My services were for a massage and facial; which I thought would be conducted by a licensed massage. therapist, but ...buyer-beware they do not have licensed massage therapist but esthetician's who give the massages. My massage was supposed to be 60 minutes ... the total time from when I walked into the room to the end of the massage was 45 minutes . It was a very weird situation and circumstances, but I would never recommend the spa to anyone and I will never return. read more

I have had bad experiences with gels, so this place had to earn my trust. After 5 months, they definitely have. Jinnie does my nails every time and she is amazing. She's always done within an hour and never sacrifices quality. My nails are perfectly uniform in shape, width, and length every time. The spa staff and clients are always friendly, making it a relaxing and enjoyable visit every time. I will attach a couple of pictures. Currently I have the perfect nude, which Jinnie helped me select. So where do I begin. The pedi I had was wonderful so I rate the experience 5 star for that but the reason for my one star is for the set of acrylic nails that I got afterwards. The photos will explain themselves. I'm usually a pretty tough person when it comes to nails and I can handle a lot. I've never ever experienced filing that was so painful ever in my life. The sides of my nail beds were filed so narrow that it's into the nail bed and it's extremely sore and sensitive. I am applying polysporin and alcohol to hopefully stave off any infection that may follow on the broken skin in that area where nail tools were used. Photos will show where my nail bed/cuticle is and you'll see how far in my nail was filed into the nail bed. Everytime she went to file in there I jumped but no mention was made and it was pretty evident that my nail beds were not where she was filing and the small blood spots forming on two nails should've been an indication that it's now waaaayyyy too far. The tech was super nice and I have nothing against her personality or debentures at all but this level of inattentiveness strongly suggests that maybe they have technicians that aren't certified in their training or are just trained by other staff instead of having formal training. This type of error, to me, is huge when it comes to technique and proper nail care. Getting your nails done shouldn't be stressful or painful. I am not from Calgary so I wasn't sure where to go. This place was close to my hotel. My pedi was great. That technician (a different one from the one who did my gel nails) was great and attentive to my skin and nail care. The salon itself was nicely presented. I was actually shocked at my nails and how much pain I'm now in especially after the fact when the soreness has really begun to settle in. I get my nails done A LOT. And I'm always all for trying out new nail salons and getting a feel for other technicians and salons to see what I prefer but this was absolutely the most stressful nail appointment I've ever had. I feel terrible for leaving a bad review but honestly this type of faux pas where it's painful and could risk a future infection even is just not something o ignore.. Maybe I just fell ill fated to someone in training. She seemed to apply A LOT of acrylic just to drill it all off. And redo spots on various nails after drilling almost 3/4 of the product that she applied back off which indicated to me a newbie status or a technician who hadn't had any formal training. Anyways, maybe a note to others considering this salon to ask for someone who's experienced to avoid something like this. On a positive note, everyone was super warm and welcoming when I arrived and all through my visit. It would've been a much more pleasurable experience had I had all my nail beds in tact. Not worth the $140+ whatsoever. :( read more

This is my favorite place to get waxed. I spent some time working up close and personal with cameras, and a smooth skin is quite the plus, so it behooved me to get waxing done well. I happen to be impatient as well, so the speed at which Lillian moves makes me happy. Not like I wanna linger there while getting my hair ripped out, but Lillian is quite personable, in a no nonsense way. She will not stop if you happen to whine, but simply keep talking about that vacation you mentioned last time you got waxed. Did you enjoy yourself? Of course you did! Now just hold still, we are almost done. Pham is up a flight of stone steps, to a location above a hair studio. There is a comfy waiting room with magazines, and reception. Take a step down, and you are in the middle of a few nail desks. Walk a few steps forward, and you are in the foot bathing area. Looks quite plush, tho I have never used the pedi services here. Next are three or four private rooms with platform beds. Fresh paper on the beds every time, and even a worn but clean half robe to wrap around your furry self. Wax is kept nicely warm but not scalding in two hotpots, above a bin of cloth strips. The wax is a good temp to me, but those with sensitive skin might want to mention it. I find Lillian to be very responsive, and she will blow on the wax to cool it before every strip if you mention it is too hot. There is a clean washroom just off the private rooms, with a basket of rolled hand towels to use, instead of just paper towels to dry your hands. Enviro approval! read more

Well! I seem to have finally found the happy medium with nail salons! This place was pretty clean, well located and had friendly staff. Price wasn't cheap, but thats not a problem when ability and service are great. Great new set of gel nails and a pedicure. As usual, I was not impressed with the foot massage, but I rarely am - SO hard to come by. Digging the nail colour and one on one service. I'll be back for sure. Full new set of nails and pedicure with gel polish and tip came to $150 for just over 2.5 hours of service. Good deal. Staff were attentive, fluent English speakers that seemed to be genuinely happy. Phamtastic Nails is the best :) I go to the 37st (Westbrook location) I found this place by chance one day however a couple months after coming I realized a couple close friends also come here. These girls do great gel nails for reasonable prices. The main thing I was looking for in a nail place was variety of colors and sparkle options. They have a tone of colors and lots of sparkle and glitter to choose from. I see Tho and she's awesome - she's thorough and does great work-always smiling -- My mom comes here now also and see's Lee -who is also good. My mom get Shellac nail polish and it lasted 3 weeks b4 chipping. They have great massage chairs for pedicures and convenient free parking. **one thing to remember is tips are CASH ONLY ---and you will wanna leave one cuz these girls are great :)-- See you soon Phamtastic nails. I first went in as a walk in. Had a full set Of acrylic nails done the girl who did them did not sand down my nails or shape them properly. Did not make them The size I needed so I got home And had to cut them. After 6 days 3 came off and others were starting to. When I emailed them about this they said they would fix it. I did want gel nails in the beginning . The girl jinny did a good job of putting new ones on and shaping them. My first set was far French manicure with glitter. Second set was pink French manicure but I had to pay 5.00 for the white tips not sure why when it was there error. First time I spent 4 hrs there for just a set of nails. Clean, friendly, relaxing, and just old fashioned GOOD SERVICE and GOOD WORK!!!! Earlier today I went to Urban Venus Nail Bar (on 11th Ave SW) to have my legs waxed and was VERY disappointed and upset. I wrote a separate review for Urban Venus but it boils down to this: the girl there left LOADS of long, dark hairs; my legs were poorly done. I came home feeling very crumby about the money I'd just spent for such shaudy work. Since I fell out of the waxing habit last summer, I let the hair grow for a full four weeks, during which time I exfoliated and lotioned regularly. I was so eager to have my legs done so I could start wearing capris and skirts and shorts and then...crap. After I complained to a friend, I remembered passing by Phamtastic Nails & Spa a few times on my way to the train platform. I called them up and explained my situation. I rushed right over and immediately I was impressed by the place: very clean and relaxing. I felt like I was somewhere special, about to get a treat. All the other girls smiled at me as I passed by on my way to a waxing room; I felt much more welcome at Phamtastic. The woman looked at my legs and agreed they were badly done. She went over them entirely and was much more gentle and friendly. The regular price for a 1/2 leg wax (lower leg) is $30, which seems to be the going rate in Calgary. It was well worth the cost and I am very eager to go back. I'm not one to spend a lot of money on myself but they have a variety of services there and I definitely intend to try them out simply because my experience today was so wonderful. This is my absolute favorite place to get waxed! BUT ONLY BY LILLIAN. She is wonderful! I usually go in for a Brazilian. I've been to several other places and have always found them to be too long and too painful. With Lillian, I am in and out in under 15 minutes and it's the least painful wax job I've ever had. She's very personable, but doesn't waste time. one of the things I like best about her is that she always remembers who you are, the vacation you told her about months before, etc. I had moved away for a couple of years and when I came back, she still remembered me - excellent customer service. That being said, I've had a couple of waxes by a couple of other ladies when Lillian was not there (I think one of the ladies was named Jenny) and it was TERRIBLE. Very painful, they missed patches of hair, seemed to be putting wax on in random places and ripping it off in one strip. I would not recommend making an appt for waxing with anyone other than Lillian, as she seems to be the only one who actually knows what she is doing (and she does it well!) read more

I have been to so many places to get my eyebrows done but none of them could provide what i wanted. I read the reviews and saw a lot of great ones on Phamtastic spa&nails, I then decided to go. When I arrived, I could not stop but notice how nice the place looked but there was nobody at the counter and I had to wait 7minutes before a lady asked me what I wanted. I then had to wait because Lilian was busy. When she finally came, she rushed me to the room and only asked me if she could use wax on me, after that she didn't say another word. She did the bottom of my brow with wax, it was painless and then followed by threading the rest; it was painful but it was my first time ( Im more of a wax person) so i cannot judge nor compare to anything. When she was done she just left and told me to meet her at the counter, she didn't even let me look at myself in a mirror like they usually do! I gave them 4 stars because the result was good ( the best one I had in a very long time), my eyebrows were thiner that what i am usually accustomed to, but i liked it. Personally the service isn't something I care about , I just something well done and worth my money. I recommend this place if you want something cheap ( 12$) and well done. If you are looking for an inviting place with people who take their time to talk to you and entertain you, i do not recommend this place. read more

One of the worse places I have ever been too. Made an appointment was told on the phone it was perfect timing. Got there and stood at the front desk for 5 minutes. Was finally sitted and had someone prep my nails. Sat there for 45 MINUTES before a lady came rushing over to me. Speeding through the service. Couldn't even file my nails evenly. I ended up correcting it myself before she did the shellac. IF YOU WANT A WHITE TIP MANICURE - DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY HERE. She was in such a rush at the end she left the nails rough and rigid. Cecile (sp?) at this location is AMAZING! I tried a number of different salons across the city and they were always a hit and miss. I should explain I get gel stiletto nails done and for whatever reason, many estheticians have problems shaping the nails this way - but not Cecile! She is spot on every single time and they look absolutely wonderful! She always gets the perfect length and the perfect shape, she's not man handling your hands in the process, she's quick and efficient. It can be a pretty pricey when getting them done every 2-3 weeks (especially if your nails grow fast) but it's well worth the money. Tons of colors to pick from and she will always be honest if the color comes on different than what it may look like in the bottle so you're not stuck with an ugly shade for 2 weeks. The only thing that sometimes bothers me with this salon is how rushed you sometimes feel. It's best, if possible, to get the last appointment of the day because normally they are running behind so you get in late and then they are trying to push you out the door. A few times this annoyed me since I wanted a design or little diamond on my nail and it was done super rushed because the next customer was waiting. They should allow more time for each appointment if this is a constantly reoccurring thing read more

I first went in for a new set of gel nails and a pedicure. The nails turned out ok, just ok and same with the pedicure. The pedi was fine for the most part except the polish wasn't very good. The girl doing it didn't paint all the way to the bottom of my toenails so it looked like my pedi was starting to grow out already. Not impressed with that. The gel nails were fine for a new set except the girl doing them (very nice girl) does not know how to shape nails at all. I had to file them when I got home. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go back or not but decided to see how she did on the fill. She didn't trim my nails as short as I requested when I got the new set and since they curl quite badly at the sides, most of them had significant lifting and she decided to put on a new set. I still do not know how well she would have done with a fill but do know I will not be going back there ever again. Before she put on the new set I asked if she had colored powder for the French tips, she did. I think that is acrylic and didn't care what type it was just as long as it looked nice. She suggested a different type of product, and there was a bit of a language barrier here, so I am pretty sure I agreed to what she was telling me. It was a gentler product for the nails, sounded good. My friend told me it looks like the new stuff that is a thin layer of the gel polish (gelac maybe) that they set with the uv light. It looks like I have a shiny coat of nail polish with some sparkles rubbed on the tips. While it is natural looking, to the point where people say 'I like your sparkly nail polish' that's not what I was expecting. Now this isn't why I'm not going back, I think I agreed to whatever she was telling me but again she doesn't have any basic nail shaping skills. This makes me think she doesn't have any proper esthetics training at all. I again went home to filed all my nails and to top it, 3 days later this glorified nail polish has started chipping off. I came here to have my nails redone. I had gone to Fortune Nails to get shellac done on my hands. The girl did them in 25 min. and left the cuticle and nail shape untouched. So I came here and got my nails redone by Jenny. She did a great job and took great care with my cuticles. The shellac color was really nice. I will definitely be back! read more

A couple days ago, I went to this place and got my eyebrows threaded. WORST. DECISION. EVER. I am very upset with the job they did. For one, I told the lady to PLEASE not touch the shape of my eyebrows, just to clean them up. She completely ignored me and made them WAY higher than they should be. At first, I thought they looked ok, but after a day I realized that they were un-even! She let me leave like that! What kind of eyebrow professional cannot tell when someones eyebrows are un-even? They are so bad, that they cannot be fixed for a while, I must wait until they grow back. So. furious. My sisters and mothers were done well, so I suppose my experience was maybe just a fluke. Nevertheless, I am not impressed and my self esteem is at an all time low. read more

Didn't have a good experience at this over-priced salon. I went in for a "fill" (gel nails) -- the nail tech was pleasant and friendly but tired, and didn't do a great job with my nails. She didn't bother shaping them after filling them in (they looked bigger in width at the top after she applied nail polish), and left my real nails underneath "as is". If you look closely, you can see my real nails poking out the sides of the artificial nails -- a poor job, and much too expensive for such lousy service. read more
