Southside deli used to be a hidden gym on Hillview, but it certainly has gotten busier over the years. Every time I seem to make it to the deli, it is almost always packed no matter what time you go. The lunchtime rush is a real thing packed with plenty of staff from the local hospital. We were told to come here for soups and salad... Some thing relatively healthy. We got that and so much more! We ended up with gelato and cannoli and dessert... After our lovely lunch... And have decided that this is a "must go to" Restaurant every time we come to town! Not only where we treated with extraordinary customer service, the kindness from behind the counter was refreshing and so appreciated! We got suggestions for fresh fish (Walt's) and were reminded not to miss one of the best tourist attractions in town, the Ringling Brothers museum. I stopped in and ordered their Southsider, a sandwich with sliced ham and turkey, Swiss cheese, cucumbers slices, and a little sauce, on marble bread. I think there was an award on the wall for this particular sandwich. I was one of the few customers, early for lunch, and got my sandwich in just a few minutes. You order at the counter and give your name. In my case they brought my sandwich to me. The sandwich was good, seemed a little dry so maybe more sauce would have helped. There was a generous stack of meat and it did make for a nice lunch. read more

Horrible service, dude was cursing the whole time when I was picking up my food and I ordered ahead of time and got there later and it still wasn't ready. I've been to Southside 5 times. Food is great. My only issue is when I order, my order sits on the counter. When I get to my office its always cold. I've had to ask the status of my order numerous times. Why are hot orders not foil wrapped? read more

Stopped here today because our favorite place, Faicco's went out of busines. Apparently none of my New York friends have opened a real deli in Sarasota. My review is based on decades of running successful food establishments. The place had some people seated for lunch, I assume people only go here due to no other nearby sandwich shops. Ordered 2 sandwiches, Italian and a pastramI. Italian; store bought plain roll, 1 slice salami, 1 slice turkey, dry and flavorless. Pastrami, bread that fell apart, soggy. The Food was below average, owners seem content with mediocre. Female behind the counter was Rude, she was upset I asked for a large 5 cent to go box. Save your money, if you want average, go to a Subway. Employees attitudes can kill a business. Please someone open a real deli near this place. read more

Southside is probably my favorite Deli in Sarasota. I've been eating here from time to time for over 15 years. I'm not sure how long they have been in business but they are a staple for lunch in Sarasota. Their menu is quite extensive. All types of sandwiches, salads, soups, deserts and more. Everything I've eaten here has been good - great. Club sandwiches, melts, soups, etc. They offer several home made sides in sealed containers in a glass front refrigerator. Potato salad, pasta salad, coleslaw and more. All are excellent. One of the few negatives is that they are extremely popular and there's not enough seating to handle all of the walk in traffic. You order at the counter and they'll call your name or deliver to a table if you're seated. It can get quite crowded waiting for your order. I may be mistaken but it appears they don't carry bottled water. Mostly sodas, bottled teas, Gatorade, etc. Lot's of healthy menu items so I would think many customers would want bottled water. They do have a drive thru window but I've never pre ordered so I'm not sure if the process. You can also, order ahead and pickup at the side counter. Give them a shot. Went here for lunch today, real cool folks here and very friendly. I wasn't sure what to order, and the gentleman at the cash helped me decide nicely. He said the BLT has 8 slices of bacon--wow! In the end I went with NY Special with roast beef and turkey. They use Boars Head meats and they are good in quality. The sandwich was very fresh and super tasty. I got the thousand island on the side. The rye bread was super soft and they told me they bake it in house--you can really tell. We also ordered the chef salad with hard boiled egg, turkey, and cheddar cheese, all fantastic. I also noticed desserts like fudge brownies, homemade carrot cake, and gelato--perhaps next time. They all looked fresh. Quite a bit of seating here, along with a self serve fountain machine. read more

Ordered in for the first time today & the sandwiches were excellent! Their potato salad is fantastic & they have good pickles! Quality ingredients built correctly. Tomato basil soup didn't have much basil but maybe someone forgot a pesto garnish or something (which would be a simple human error & no biggie if that's the case) but not a bad soup. I'm from New England and ever since I've moved here I haven't been able to find a place that has Italian subs or grinders like we call them back home until today!!! The bread is just like back home!!!! What I really liked when I ordered I said I want an Italian sub there where no questions about what do you want on it is it ok if we put this or that on it unless you have an allergy that's not how it works up north you ask for an Italian grinder you get an Italian grinder AND I DID NOT HAVE TO SAY DON'T TOAST IT and also got the cream of mushroom soup DELICIOUS!!!! One of a kind in Sarasota. If you go inside, remember to know what you want. This place is jamming with all the area's workers dying for soup and a sandwich at around $10.00. Service is brisk but with a smile. Try and figure out what you want before you get to the counter to order, cause there usually is a huge line and everybody seems to be rushing back to work. Well, okay even the seniors are rushing to their doctor appointments. I love their pastrami reuben, always hot, always lean and plenty of sauerkraut to make the "AH" moment on that first bite. The salads are not bad too, but i usually go for the sandwiches when I eat here. Soups vary and small is small but perfect as a side. Prices are reasonable for the area and keep in mind with the volume, the food is always freshly made just for you. Inside and outside dining is available. Issue in this area is finding a parking spot. Most of the business here are folks walking around the hospital and medical facilities in the area. Again, I tend to favor the drive up, but on those occasions when i have found a parking spot, I have ventured inside to have lunch. Tables are a bit tight and it tends to be loud with a bit of chaos. Okay if you don't mind hearing everyone's conversations around you. Do not recommend dining inside if you are seeking a good reading spot, doesn't exist here.
