Dr. Essinger is hands down the best optometrist I have ever seen. The staff at Vestavia Eye Care was friendly and helpful from the moment I reached the front counter. The initial tests and evaluations were thorough, especially when I told them some recurring issues I was having. (Note: make sure you have at least an hour for your exam if you have an issue.) When I told Dr. Essinger the issues I had been having for two years that were unsolved mysteries for every doctor I saw, he was the first to care. He ran texts on me I had never seen and he came up with two theories for me to test. In fact, he was so concerned that he told me to text him as soon as I had progress. His caring concern brought tears to my eyes! Birmingham- We are so fortunate to have this office here! If you need a reliable optometrist for your family, look no further! I was also told they have a pediatric optometrist on staff for those of you with little ones.

Got new frames two weeks ago and was told to give them two weeks before getting them adjusted…read more Salesman never did anything to check or adjust the fit. Went back today, explaining that they were so loose that they would fall off my face when I bent over. The guy did three "adjustments" and made NO improvement. He obviously had no idea what he was doing, so I left. I will be going to another optician to get these things adjusted, even if they charge me to do so. Dr. Day (Optometrist) was great; too bad he's associated with LensCrafters.

I get outside to pick out my glasses and was informed that he had prescribed me progressives anyway. Fine. I'll just leave the progressive part off. So I pick out some glasses that the frames were $160. My insurance covered most of that. But due to all the "upgrades" I was told I had to have because that's "all we have in stock", my single vision glasses were almost $400. I desperately needed glasses though so I paid it. I picked them up about an hour later (the only nice part of this experience). I could tell something was off with the prescription right away but I thought I'd get use to it. After a few days though I realized the prescription is just way off. I see better WITHOUT them on. I drive the 45 minutes back to the store to return them. They basically tell me at first that I can't return them because I paid cash and they don't carry that much cash in store. (I asked Rye or Kye when I paid with cash if that was okay and she said no problem!) Then they say LensCrafters will have to mail me a check. I ask Rye or Kye if she knows how long that will take. "Nope!" she says with a grin. I asked her if she could ask someone. "No! Sorry. This is your only option though." Then another girl walks up and assures me it'll take no more than 5 days. Still not ideal because that'll put me without glasses for a couple weeks but they kept telling me I had no other options. Then, when I was about to sign to agree to it, ANOTHER employee walks up and tells me it'll be AT LEAST 30 days, maybe 60. I can't go over two months without any glasses! He says he understands and gets my name and number and says he'll call me the next day and I can come back (a third 45 minute trip). That was a week ago. I have heard nothing from them. I called after a few days and they said again that they'd call me back. Nope. Nothing. I'm stuck with $400 glasses that I can't use and I can't get another pair because I need the money back from the first pair first, so I'm walking around with no glasses. Plus they were rude, especially Kye or Kya or whichever her name was. Save yourself the headache and go anywhere else at all.

I was so offended by the way I was treated here. The staff constantly talked down to me even though…read morethey could see my date of birth on my chart and knew I was not a child. The receptionist asked me if I wanted to add in a contacts exam to my glasses exam and I asked if it would be covered by insurance. She said yes but then later charged me full price for it. The doctor asked me if I cleaned my contacts often and I answered honestly that I did and he proceeded to look under my eyelid (which was very painful) and told me I had a "rash" on my eyelid and that I needed to start wearing daily lenses so they would stay cleaner. When I asked if I could just clean my extended wear contacts (which are approved to sleep in) more often to alleviate this problem, he laughed at me but never answered the question. I felt like I was being forced to use contacts I did not want - and I wasn't even there for contacts! He also acted like he had really caught me doing something "bad" by checking my eyelid for an imaginary rash - he was so condescending after. But I was completely honest about how often I cleaned my contacts and I had no eye irritation problems whatsoever. The "eyewear specialist" lied to me about the glasses I wanted coming in the color I wanted and charged me without checking them and had to call me later to let me know they didn't come in that color so I had to go back to get a refund. While there, I requested my prescription so I could go somewhere more affordable to buy glasses and I was given the runaround until I basically demanded it. The receptionist then told me to make sure I took the prescription somewhere that took my insurance so that I could afford it. When I asked for the contacts prescription, I was told I couldn't have it until I had tried the terrible contacts I hadn't asked for and that it would't be written for the contacts I wanted anyway, so I just left. I'd like to point out that it is illegal for eye doctors to not give you your prescription - and they're supposed to give it to you without you having to ask, just like any other doctor. I basically felt taken advantage of and cheated the entire time I was there, and I was treated like a child even though I am an adult with an adult job who pays for her own insurance and can afford her own glasses with or without insurance.

I've been a patient of Eyecare Associates in Homewood, Alabama…read morefor years. The Provider Dr. Vanoy is excellent, that's why I go back, but the eye glass technicians each time I purchase my glasses which, cost more each time are just not efficient in helping you choose the right eyewear. The first pair of glasses I purchase for over $600.00 when I received them, and got home to work on my computer, did not fit correctly and were to heavy for my face* I took those back and the lady who reviewed the glasses, changed the frames, I assumed because she was the expert eye technician, that these glasses should be better the second time around, well to much of my surprise, I was wrong again. I went in to pick up my replacement glasses for the second time, the lady handed me my glasses, and I put them on, she did not check to review with me if they fit or how they should fit, due to it was close to closing time, and she seemed to be one of the ladies that check you in behind the desk. well to say the least when I got home with the replacement glasses, using them for about a week, I noticed these glasses did not feel good, They were to tight and did not go all the way behind my ear, I ordered the ear extenders for glasses and they just irritated my ears. It is so frustrating to have a very good provider, but then have to deal l with the eyecare technicians whom seem not to get your glasses right on every visit that you have your yearly exam. I had to go to another eyeglass provider with my written eyeglass prescription from Dr. Vanoy and have new glasses made. They attempted to try and remedy the replacement pair from eyecare associates ,but it was obvious the replacement pair of glasses were to small for my face. I had to put out more money to purchase a new pair of glasses, So due to lack of experience of the Eyecare Associates technicians and just overall process of purchasing eyewear from Eyecare Associates in Homewood is always an Issue each time. Dr. Vanoy is an excellent Provider, but I refuse to purchase eyewear from Eyecare Associates in Homewood, Alabama and spend that amount of money when you have continue to have to return and still not have a solution to the problem. My total eye exam and eyewear bill out-of-pocket totaled about $1000.00 for the year of October 2023 even with eye insurance. It is better to purchase your glasses from another provider to avoid this type issue. A patient should not have to be subject to this type of experience year after year. Thanks P Boston

The design of the shop is quite funky and artsy (be careful not to fall into the pit!) and has all of the frames out so you can try them on as you like. I hate when all the frames are under lock and key; it really hinders the trying-on process. I checked out a couple of eyeglasses places in Birmingham and found myself drawn to the more obscure and unique frames at iiis. No Ray-Ban, Prada, or Vogue here. The ladies are all very nice and are very helpful and patient if you take hours to decide on your frames (ahem, me). Low pressure sales tactics. They are happy to help to find frames or if you want to browse solo, that's okay too. Plus they will even write down the glasses you're considering, both in their book and on a little card for you to take home. I'm not crazy about the location of Five Points but at least it's centrally located. iis is a little more expensive than what you might pay at other places but rest easy in the knowledge that you've got a very special pair of frames and are supporting a locally-owned shop. I did consider buying eyeglasses online but you just can't get personalized service like this online. This is great if you need adjustments later on. I'm very happy with my handcrafted-in-the-USA hipster specs!
