The cake queen visited our company today to sell her tasty treats. She was selling cupcakes for $3 each and a Charleston Chewy for $5. The cupcakes looked a little small, so I went with the Charleston Chewy. It was delicious; tasted like a Blondie with lots of butter. I'm so excited that the famous "Pink Lady" parks near my office. I've heard such wonderful things about this truck that I had to find out for myself. On Tuesdays, she parks at the Belk Corp. Ctr (Yorkmont & Tyvola for my local folks) from 1-3 and I took a chance and rode by today. She is parked near the entrance closest to Tyvola Rd. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by the flavors I had to choose from that I couldn't decide at first. The own Emma made a few recommendations which was helpful so I decided to go with the 4 cupcake sampler which was perfect. I was able to share with my coworkers when I returned to work. The packaging was great as I was able to carry them back to work without ruining the look of them. Please stop by and have yourself a sweet treat if you work near the Belk Corp Center on Tuesdays. In this current crazy world that is overrun with mediocre cupcake "experts", it is refreshing to find one of the few that are actually producing something that is actually really good. I've been fooled by plenty of posers who try and sell a grocery store cupcake as if it was a culinary oddity, but luckily SouthernCakeQueen actually delivers. We hit up the food truck during the Rural Hill Food Truck Rally and I was pleased with the end result. The employees working in the truck were friendly and smiling. There were only a few choices available, and we went with the Crimson & Cream and Salted Caramel ($3 each.) At first glance these cupcakes looked kind of plain, with a limited amount of frosting to cake ratio, but after one bite we were hooked. The Crimson & Cream was pretty much a red velvet cupcake, with the red velvet cake and cream cheese icing. With my first bite I knew I had found something special, as two thoughts rammed into my brain...not only was the cake moist, but it was delicious! It had a wonderful red velvet flavor, and was so moist, not dry like so many other disappointing cupcakes. The icing is actually perfect; it's not super sweet and there's not too much of it...just the perfect amount. The Salted Caramel was much the same...a moist, tasty cake with the perfect icing. The chocolate cake was tastetacular, and the butter cream icing was not tooth-twingingly sweet at all. So what's my only concern? There's nothing in the middle! Don't get me wrong...these cupcakes were indeed moist and flavorful. Still, I found myself missing the lack of a pudding/icing/filling of any kind inside. Maybe some people, like the missus, think that's crazy talk, and that adding any more sweetness would be recklessly unnecessary and risks ruining an otherwise perfect cupcake. Well I say nay, bring on the filling! SouthernCakeQueen is one of the few cupcake peddlers in the area that are full-on legit. I wouldn't think twice about halting traffic to stop and pick up a couple of cupcakes if I happened to pass them parked on the street. Had a taste of these cupcakes at the Food Truck Competition in Matthews- Chocolate Delight, Paris, and a Red Velvet one. Not very moist. Crumbly and slightly dry. Barely a hint of the taste of chocolate or red velvet in the cupcake. The frosting on each cupcake was the best part. Very small in size for $3 each. read more

Not sure what all the 1 stars are talking about! I visit Southern Cake Queen regularly during Food Truck Fridays in southend. They are ALWAYS moist, delicious, perfectly sized, perfectly priced. I am a baker myself and would be thrilled if I could create such consistently perfect little creations! Not sure what's not to like about the frosting?? Maybe the low raters are used to sugary or whipped grocery store style? These are handmade, rich buttery frostings. Delish! Please try for yourself!!! I was tasked with getting cupcakes for a friend's birthday party. I looked at reviews and searched for various places online. Being new to the area. I wasn't sure where to start and it can get overwhelming with many options in the area. I queried several places and while some responded quickly, others responded within 24 hrs and some did not respond at all. Southern Cake Queen was one that did not respond and it was probably the one of the first I queried based on its website and reviews. Some businesses are so big they don't have the courtesy to respond to the little people and I am classing this one in that category. I put my inquiry in well in advance, probably about a little less than a month before the event. So, the review is for lack of service. I noticed this establishment is big on participating in events and tv competitions. Even if you are busy, booked or cannot accommodate a request you can at least say so. That is what reputable companies who care about their customers do. read more

She was bubbly, personable and ready to sell some cupcakes. She did not have to twist my arm--her lemon cupcake was delish! We had a surprise party for my wife, and we got our cake from Emma, the SouthernCakeQueen. This cake was such a hit! It was beautiful, had a "blinging" high heel shoe (you'd have to know my wife, she loves bling!) and several layers high. Of course, wifey's girlfriend ordered the carrot cake (we had carrot cake at our wedding!), and the only thing better than the looks was the taste! Our guests could not get enough! Stopped for a cupcake today at the food truck gathering in the CM parking area... I decided to try the red velvet w/ cream cheese frosting.. Yuck.. I'm sorry but this was the worst red velvet cupcake I've ever had. It had a very artificial taste with too much red dye. I feel I wasted my money and could of waited to go to Sas cupcakes instead.. This review is a bit late but still relevant... I spotted this truck when I went down to Charlotte for JCSU's homecoming in October '12. I bought four cupcakes - Blue Velvet, Red Velvet, Sweet Potato and Carrot Cake. I never got to taste the Carrot Cake because my cousin gobbled it up before I could get a crumb! These were some of the best cupcakes I've ever tasted. The Blue Velvet was a killer. They were so moist and just the right size - not too big and overwhelming. It's a good thing I don't live down there because I would be stalking that truck on the regular. I may go back to down this year but only if someone can confirm that this truck will be there. I wish I had a favorite but Emma keeps surprising us with something different each time. this business is extremely active and engaged in the community and is iconic in the charlotte food truck industry. every cupcake I have had has been delicious. Emma made our wedding cake and it was outstanding! We tried her cupcakes at food truck friday , fell in love and had an amazing and very successful tasting with her. Everything was fresh, delicious and she was very accommodating to us and what we were wanting. I would recommend them in heartbeat and I would also reccomend the passionfruit cake!
