The security is unethical,very disrespectful and putting students in great danger! I went to bring my brother who lives on campus to the back and Calvin Hutchson informed me I need a visitor pass. I said I'm liter going drop him off I'm not staying. He insisted that I still needed one. I go to the police station and ask for a pass and C. Williams informs us that they are not issuing vistors passes. My brother and I explained to her exactly what Hutchson said and she goes on to say they still not giving visitor' passes. We go back to the check point and tell Calvin Hutchson that they are not issuing visitor passes. He agrues and said "yes they are someone just came from back there". I said sir , C.Williams told us they not issuing any passes. He insists we go back. We went back and told her Hutchson said we needed a pass to get to the back of campus and she still says she is not issuing any . I asked could we get a student pass since my brother stays on campus . She asked for my license, after she wrote all of my personal information down then went sat at her computer and asked why were we still there and to just walk to the back of campus. I explained to her I brought some heavy things my brother has to carry to his room and he can't possibly walk with all of that. She said "y'all two are getting on my nerves and I already talk to my director and he said no. " I look at my brother in confusion because C.Williams just said we could get a student pass and took my information and DID NOT MAKE ANY PHONE CALLS WHIKE WE STOOD THERE WAITING. With frustration and very disappointed we silently left. I went back to the check point and Calvin Hutchson still insi that they were giving out passes and I explained to him we went twice and it was the same answer. I told him to call the police station because y'all are lacking good communication skills. He called her and she said no they can walk to the back of campus. I parked my car by the check point and help my brother tote all his belong of what we could carry and left the rest in my car. As we walked back to the check point we noticed and I recited Calvin Hutchson let an Uber driver, someone's father and a truck full of faternity men to the back of campus without any passes. I'm beyond livid and very concerned of how they let whomever they want to the back of campus and yet my brother who stays on campus gets a hard tim. read more

Okay, this review is strictly from my daughter's school field trip. I was never a student, nor did I ever take any leisure classes there. It was really cool to go here for my daughter's school field trip. I had only seen road signs leading to Southern University, but have never actually driven there. The campus was gorgeous and very scenic. In fact, it had lovely views of the Mississippi River. We got to visit an engineering building and get to know some very cool machines owned by the college: 3-D Printers. It was fun to sit inside an actual lecture hall and take a tour of their 3-D Printing rooms. The education was fun and getting learn about these futuristic machines from the cool students who get to operate it and learn from it as well. Staff and students were so enthusiastic about teaching and hosting our group and were so eager to share their knowledge with us. It was definitely a fun time! read more

I could have gone to other schools of architecture, but I'm glad/happy/proud that I chose the Southern University, School of Architecture. Twenty years after graduation, I'm a licensed architect in California and Virginia. I've held leadership positions in architecture, public service and a range of organizations. Family and friends are important to me as well. I already have a career as an Accountant at an engineering firm, so I require all night/late afternoon and online classes. I was told by an LSU advisor that if I could not put my degree before my career that LSU was not the institution for me. I transferred to THE Southern University, and this was the best decision that I ever made. I was met with advisors and professors that go above and beyond to accommodate the students' needs. At Southern, you feel like part of a family. The only negative thing I have to say about Southern is the Financial Aid process... You will be disappointed a lot, so make sure you take care of it way ahead of time. read more

I'm bias... yes I am! Southern University has been a fixture in my life for as long as I can remember. My grandmother raised her family in the Scotlandville community which surrounds the university and I attended the laboratory school in my elementary years. I'm also a 1999 graduate. Southern has a renowned engineering, law and nursing programs. It is one of the largest HBCU schools in the US with campuses in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport. The student body includes students from across the US as well as internationally. Students and the community rally to support the marching band (Human Jukebox) and football team as they compete in some of the fiercest rivalries in the SWAC. The school has had its share of issues but it has done more good for the community than not. There are many students that have been able to get a higher education that may have not had an opportunity at other universities. Current and alumni students bleed blue and gold and are filled with history and pride. When we say "I'm so glad I go to Southern U" we really mean it. read more

I don't see why others have given this school as high a rating as they have because this school is everything but 5 stars. They forgot to mention about all the scandals that have gone on at this university regarding money, grade scams, etc. Some teachers are there for you, but most are not. It is cheaper to go here, I will give them that much, but you get what you pay for. The nursing program SUCKS. They have teachers who will fail you just because they don't like you and you feel like you wasted so much money and time trying to get into the program only to go through that. Also, that program was on probation several times, so know about that before judging me. Also, they have had to cut a lot of programs due to lack of funding and their alumni do not want to give them money because you will not get help getting a job, so don't go to this school thinking that it is a ticket to a guaranteed job. I hope this school does get better with time. read more
