Even though advertised as an academic magnet, they have a performing arts program second to none. Three levels of band and also jazz band. Three levels of choirs and a performance show choir. Thee levels of string orchestra, dance, drama, and piano classes. Also offers athletic programs like swim team, soccer teams, basketball and volleyball teams, and track teams. Students can join one of over 30 clubs to participate in. School is ranked number 1 academically in the district and is one of the top five middle school programs in the state. Sherwood has also gained national recognition being awarded a National Blue Ribbon School. It was recently honored as one of 12 schools nationally as a model school. The school was invited to and accepted an invitation to present to schools from around the country at the national conference on its best practices that have been put in place that make it one of the best programs in the country.

It's been a year since I enrolled our then 2 & 3 yr old girls in swim class with my coworker's 2 yr…read moreold child. My coworker's child cried the entire class, every class. She has always had some separation anxiety and even when we would go to the zoo together she was the type of baby that would cry if someone looked at her. So be prepared that your kid might cry. Hype them up. Smile and wave. Make a special hand sign or tell them to blow you kisses if they get nervous. Mine both cried the first day because it was new, and then my 3 yr old cried for a couple more classes, but just until she got in the water and remembered it was a fun experience. Due to the emergence of the delta variant, I pulled the girls from swim class at the end of the summer session. They then asked to go back to swim class for a whole year. This year I decided to start over, putting all three of our kids in the beginner class now that I have a 2, 3, and 4 yr old with minimal water experience. I paid the $100 priority registration so I could secure a morning slot on a day that typically works with my job schedule. There is also an individual registration fee that was not included in the priority registration. I chose to make the drive to this particular location knowing I would be able to watch them myself from the huge glass windows. I am very wary of places that don't want you to see what they are doing with your child, or that don't consider more eyes on the water safer for the kids. This year there has been no crying. They are siblings, so they are comfortable together and even my 2 year old is happy to leave me for the pool. They are all together in the same class because we don't have access to water and I considered covid the larger risk to our family this past two and a half years. I believe most of the swim instructors are college students. They are kind and patient. I have watched kids screech-wail in their faces and they talk to them a little and then help them in the water. They don't punish or yell, but they tell them what's going to happen and then they do it gently. I wish it were possible to see the number of spots open for a make up class, but one of the staff is helping me keep an eye out for a make up class with extra spots as she is able to visualize that on her end. Private classes mean it is one on one with an instructor, not that you have the pool to yourself. If you want the pool to yourself I'd suggest you request the first available class of the day on a weekday, and tell them it's your preference. The weekend are busy. We have had to make up two classes this session and they have gone very well. We will likely stay until I am confident my kids are strong swimmers.

The location is the old site of the GW Carver Primary School which has been relocated to a new site/facilities... Anyway you have to stop into this place once a year to provide residency verification to show your kid is allowed to attend Ascension Parish schools...you'd be surprised at how many people that live out of Ascension Parish try and sneak their kids into Ascension schools... So the staff at RVTO are there to do verification as well as random checks throughout the school years on people suspected of gaming the system...if they catch you I've heard the consequences can be severe... That's pretty much all that can be said for this part of the school system...
