Missed Mustang Day and showed up for information for a self-guided tour. Not only did we get maps, prospective student swag, and a map, but we got an awesome introduction. An admissions team member came out and basically gave us the tour on a map while outlining our walk. Seriously. She spent a solid 30-45 minutes with us and gave us food for thought (comparing TCU and SMU). Campus folks were friendly too as we were wandering. Southern Methodist University is such a gorgeous campus! I went to visit the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, which happens to be a part of this campus. I had missed turning into the parking lot across from the museum and went around the block. I'm so glad that I did. After my visit to the museum, I did a quick tour of the campus before heading out for lunch. I love the wide pathways as you move from one building to the next. The architecture is beautiful and stunning. I loved the status of horses and Blanton Student Services Building. I am always inspired when I set foot on any campus. Full disclosure: I worked here, but my review is based solely on the campus and education, not on my personal experiences as an employee. Campus is beautiful. One of nicest campuses in the USA. "Boulevarding" is an experience that all should partake in. No one goes to the actual football games, because everyone is having such a good time on Bishop Boulevard. SMU is home to the GW Bush Library. Regardless of your political stance, I neat place to visit. SMU students, staff, and faculty visit for free. Realize that all these pretty things come with a pretty price tag that is passed down to students. Over 65K a year?! Not worth it in my opinion. read more

This is a beautiful campus! I love seeing how well maintained the yard and landscaping are kept. The Meadows Museum of Art has a beautiful art piece that looks like a waterfall out front. My alma matter, my second home, and the place I grew up the most at. I didn't know SMU was in Dallas until someone contacted a professor at my previous college requesting to meet me and inviting me to visit the campus. I went and I loved it. Just walking around campus made me feel much better and anytime I felt stressed, I would take a long walk around campus. I will say that tuition is pricey but I'm glad I proved that I was meant to be at SMU because my tuition was taken care of after my first year. I also love how organized this school is. I met many people, made a few friends, and was inspired by a handful of people. I didn't fit in with many groups but I'm glad I didn't because that's what made me get to know those that stuck around and actually cared the most. I was able to meet and make many connections through some of my professors who for some reason liked me and tried to help me as much as they could. OVERRATED! Parking is scarce, especially during the week. Make sure you get to campus super early in order to find parking and make it to class on time. Last semester I was late a couple days in a row cause there was never any open parking by the Expressway Tower. Professor Renee McDonald got her panties all in wad over it to. Twice she stopped the lecture just to point out that I was late. If you can try to get Professors David Rosenfield or Chris Logan. I wish I had earlier on. If I'm late or miss a class, they are chill about it as long as I make up the work. Also probably helps that I them them I was riding the crimson wave and they are too happy to change to topic and move on. Most of the professors are cool too. SMU police do not play...They have gotten all up in my grill on more then one occasion because they supposedly smelt Weed coming from my car or person. Get noisy and scream for Daddy's lawyer and they will start to back off. Not sure why they take it so seriusly anyway, most of the security is African American so you KNOW they be token when they get home. Conclusion, I should have stayed in Abilene. read more

I work there as a professor. The students can be great, or exasperating. Those students who want to excel in life and put forth an effort tend to come out with a great education. Others who are into the party life and other superficialities are disappointed. It all depends on what you put into it, which is truism of life. The students who are serious and willing to work are a joy and give an immense amount of job satisfaction. The spoiled brats who are immature, afraid of work, and thin-skinned ("what do you mean this is not A work, no one has EVER said that to me before"; or "you mean the rules apply to me too?") are a pain in the butt and make you want to leave the profession or at least leave SMU. I actually had one princess complain last semester that I expected the students to work on their research paper the entire semester ("don't you know that most students start working only the last 2-3 weeks of class, I mean we have other classes too"). Too bad the university does not offer time management courses. A university is not defined by its sports. If you want that, go to a Big Ten school where class sizes are 500+ and you will never see a professor in 4 years. A lot of the students who go to SMU have their priorities in the wrong place and do not appreciate how fortunate they are. Working there is ok. Better than most, not as good as some. It has a ways to go before it is a top tier institution, rhetoric notwithstanding. read more

I guess I might as well add my thoughts here as a recent graduate. My experiences at SMU were 50/50. Sometimes I was really glad I had picked the school. Other times I really wished I didn't. So that's why overall I went with 3 stars. For perspective, I was in the engineering school. I was not rich. I paid my way with loans and scholarships. First, this school is way too expensive. Over 30k per year is just too much for a school that is only locally and sometimes regionally known. I don't know that I have ever met someone outside of Texas under the age of 50 that knows SMU. I have yet to find anything about the school that I can say was a good deal for the amount of tuition and fees I paid and I had a half paid scholarship. There's a lot going for the social life here at SMU. Unfortunately it revolves around the Greek life. Even if I had the money to join a sorority I'm not sure I would have. As a shy geeky normal not-rich girl, I simply didn't fit into the crowd here especially in non-engineering classes. But, if greek life is your thing or you plan on dressing up for class, I'm sure it's much more enjoyable. The football team is just plain pathetic. But, the football stadium is awesome, and the band is also pretty sweet, though I am partial since I was on the drumline. The classes, especially engineering classes, were generally small. I had some classes where I was one of 5 or 6 people and it was really personal. You won't get that at a large public university. Even my largest class had under 100 people. The campus itself is small enough to walk from one side to the other between classes but big enough that you feel like you're in a town away from home. It's also very beautiful and great for pictures. It makes you feel like you're at an Ivy league school at least. The health center had a really bad reputation, but being a broke non-insured college kid I had to use it and I rarely had a bad experience. I broke my finger playing basketball and Dr. Davis there was really great about it. He and the older female doctor are the "good" doctors that I would try to stick with. Don't always trust the prices at the pharmacy though to be the cheapest. Sometimes the Wal-Mart or grocery store generics are cheaper. The on campus dorms are nice and almost all are recently redone. I only lived in them for a year but I enjoyed the experience overall (though I quickly found out it just wasn't for me). The on campus food could definitely be worse. Breakfast is the best meal for both the cafeteria and Chick-Fil-A in my opinion. There is also a Pizza Hut and a Subway. The engineering school is sort of a work in progress but it's really coming along. I do believe in the next 10 years it has the potential to become more widely known in the engineering fields. I can't say much for the other schools. I am overall satisfied in my education. That's the reason I went, and I just wish more students were the same way instead of going to socialize and find a husband. read more

I have too much pride as I'm a recent alumna, so obviously SMU gets 5 stars. You'll find the best football pre-gaming in the world on the Boulevard in the fall, and the worst hangovers year round. The only crimes on campus are drug-related, as the frat daddies gotta get through class somehow, or stolen bikes. And if it's a stolen bike, it's safe to say that a drunk freshman probably stole it, not a felon. The majority of SMU kids come from SoCal, the "major" Southern cities, and Texas, but I've never taken a class where half of my classmates weren't from all over the world, so that's kind of a neat attribute. Last but not least, SMU has immaculate fountains. And their scattered all over the campus, thanks to R. Gerald and the overpriced tuition rates. read more

If you are conservative, this is the place for you. You need to be interested in an education to make the most of your time. Since there is so much wealth, the students are given full freedom in all things. It is easy to be lured away by the strong "party culture" of those with money and 100% freedom. The professors are qualified and are willing to invest as much as you are willing to invest. You can get an excellent education if you are focused on education. There is a lot of pressure associated with fraternity and sorority life. Old timers push the "friends and connections for life" line. I think people need to be comfortable in their own skin and be individuals. Of course, those connections could serve in business and society, I am not familiar with that side of life. I doubt those types of people consult Yelp. The point of it all is an education for the rest of your life....which is probably the next 70 years! As a foreigner I was touring several universities and the only truth that I liked most in all aspects was SMU, the teachers are very strict, but I think that is what makes it different from the other schools. As a Recent grad I want to weigh in. It is a great school with engaging classes. You get as much out as you put in. Greek life is great. The campus in so pretty. I live near there now and I love to go walk around. The trees and the buildings are so well maintained. The Tate Lectures held on campus are great I have seen Tony Blair, Collin Powell and many others. The football team has a long way to go. But someday I have no doubt that they will be good again. Anyway if you are in town you should drive down the main blvd it is such a pretty place. read more

I will be graduating in May. As a non-traditional (older) student I can appreciate what perhaps younger students may not realize is an exceedingly rare opportunity: one-on-one relationships with world class faculty. At a public university you would be a number lost in the sea of greatness and having to fight so much harder for opportunities. I know because I've attended UNT, University of Houston, and was accepted at UTD but declined so I could accept SMU as a transfer student instead. I did have opportunities based on my academic achievement at other schools but I never had mentors take me under their wing like they have at SMU. And not just my program director either. I've received mentoring and encouragement from professors who only taught me one course. They have expanded my worldview and inspired me to reach even higher. Yes, it's expensive. But it is also an investment in not only the future you wish to have, but the even greater future you haven't even dared to dream you could have. Because of SMU, I am now in a position to be more competitive applying for law school, can expand my goals in the humanitarian discipline, and believe I can extend that to public policy as well. I've also become bilingual because of their great Spanish professors and program. I am going on three humanitarian trips just this year. There is a reason SMU's slogan is "World changers shaped here". And it's not a marketing platitude. The professors really do shape you to be a world changer. If you would have told me even a year ago (before I applied and transferred) that I would be about to graduate, take the LSAT and applying to law school while applying to two other grad programs for human rights, and able to converse in Spanish with a non-English speaking Ecuadorian I would have told you there's absolutely NO WAY. Here's the clincher - I just started at SMU this past January (2016). It inspired me to finish classes even faster and I've kept high grades (mostly As, 3.5 cumulative GPA) because it is that motivating and inspiring! If I'd chosen any other path, I am certain I would not be here with all these amazing opportunities to choose from today. Think on it. Then, pony up! read more

I am a non-traditional student at SMU. I was in the military for six years prior to coming to SMU. I would honestly give a 4.5, because there is always room for improvement, but that is not an option so a 5 will do the trick. Things that are great about SMU (no particular order): 1. Great professors from all over the world. A lot of experience from the professional world comes to teach here and for some as almost a hobby. 2. Great campus and facilities. Some places, as with any campus, could use some interior updating but other than that very nice. 3. Great location for jobs and networking. 4. High ranked programs and overall university. If the engineering school can grow and develop as great of a reputation as the business school then the ranking of the school will soar. 5. For the most part, compared to a public university I attended prior, the students are extremely respectful and nice. Just an anecdote from me not a jab a public schooling. 6. Good looking, well dressed people that are from all over. 50% of the school is not from Texas about 30% from California. Most of the students are very friendly and easy to get along with. 7. Awesome boulevarding (tailgating) for every football game. 8. Very good student veterans association. 9. Great administrative offices and advisers. The veterans admin is also very helpful and courteous. I experienced some very rude people at UT Austin's admin department and TCU's vet department. So much extra work goes into scholarship and admittance for a veteran/transfer and the admins I worked with were very helpful, informative and courteous. There is one exclusion which I will mention later. 10. Public transportation to and from campus is good (Mustang Express). 11. Greenville, Uptown, and the Bishop Arts are cool places with good bars/restaurants. 12. Great career fairs with lots of great companies. Also a great career center to help build your resume and prepare you for interviews. 13. SMU basketball is an up and coming program (fingers crossed). A big time coach (Larry Brown), a great recruiting class, a new conference, and a makeover to the coliseum (the arena) should make for a greater basketball culture. 14. Small classes with lots of attention for each student. 15. Christmas traditions and events put on for the community are really nice and well done. Not so great things (also no particular order): 1. Yes a lot of people are very good looking and well dressed. After all there is a lot of money at SMU. The cars on campus are ridiculous and awesome at the same time. It is probably better not to imagine the life you think you wanted but didn't have. Don't be intimidated jump in. 2. Parking and parking passes stink. 3. It is expensive. Estimates for this year were around $57,500 for a years tuition. 4. Fans don't pack games because the students stay outside boulevarding (drinking). 5. The admin at Cox business school stinks. The people that work there are rude and b**tchy. Get over yourself or work somewhere else. 6. Engineering school needs to finally get some serious attention. This will boost the natural sciences departments and increase the SMU ranking. 7. School pride. A lot of people chose SMU because they didn't get into Princeton or Yale and for some it was their top choice(s). It doesn't matter stop wearing Alabama and UCONN shirts everywhere. I get that your boyfriend goes to LSU or you are from another state but you easily could have gone to those schools instead. Lose the shirt wear an SMU shirt or at least wear the shirt of a school that is better. 8. I hate pizza hut and subway kick that trash off campus. 9. Football. SMU has a storied football tradition that is up until the mid 80s when they received the worst sanctions of a program EVER. Now this is what we are known for among young sports fans. June Jones better pull off some routine wins this year or he needs to be gone. 10. Dallas needs to be more supportive of SMU. read more

I visited SMU and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. The medium sized university has the charm of Gothic architecture and is in the middle of well heeled uptown dallas. The academics here are good and the social scene is ideal for traditional Greek enthusiasts. While the name of the school shouldn''t put people off, Harvard could be called northern unitarian university, it is true that there is a Christian vibe. The school has a total of 250 Jewish students and is noticeably light. The school is working hard to change this however. SMU is not for everyone, but could be heavenly for the some. read more

I have spent a lot of time here over the years taking continuing professional education classes. The campus is really pretty nice but it does not measure up to most of the super-elite "Ivy Plus Group" (the Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, the University of Chicago, and Cal tech) campuses I have visited. But that is not a criticism as very few campuses do. The only criticism I have is the student body is somewhat homogeneous and comes across as shallow. But that is just an impression. read more
