My oldest child had a big audition that had been scheduled for months and it was my job to score heed a specific leo and tights before the audition. Well, the DAY BEFORE THE AUDITION I realized my lapse in action and started googling dance boutiques in my area...even though I grew up in this "town", I moved away for a long time and a lot has changed. I saw that Julian's was one of the closest to my home and unquestionably a "small business": my two most important requirements. So I hopped in the car as quickly as I could (literally. I even left my wallet at home, y'all). I brought my 13-year old along to try things on, naturally. First: Julian's is DARLING. It belongs in a tv show or movie. It's definitely a boutique. Second: The staff is phenomenal. The owner is beyond kind and engaging without being obnoxious or a "sales person". Her assistant is a well-mannered young lady who engages well and is knowledgeable as well. Third: The prices are reasonable and were completely in line with my expectation. The owner asked what we were looking for and I tried to be as specific as possible. She didn't have to measure my daughter at all. She fingered through some leotards and selected exactly what we needed off the rack. It fit perfectly- the first try. My daughter is extremely modest and shy but this leotard made her instantly comfortable and confident. Buuuuut I had left my wallet at home and this was the LAST leo of its type and size. The owner held it for me, no questions, even though I probably looked like a hot mess. :) I returned later that day to pick it up along with a pair of tights, and was efficiently checked out. My merchandise was handled with care, wrapped in delicate tissue and a pretty bag. Top. Notch. Service. We will no longer purchase dancewear anywhere but Julian's, and I have two dancers under my roof. It's an honor to support a small business like this that gets it so very right.

Hoping that at some point there will be an available person to help me. The only question I had to ask, "Is there anything else that is not already on display?" NOPE. While most people who need to know about it probably already do, I am reviewing Arabesque here because it's a fine little store run by a very charming lady who obviously cares very much about dance in our town. Expectedly, most of the stock is dancewear and shoes geared towards girls and young women because that's the lion's share of who buys dancewear in Gainesville and who takes dance lessons. However, both UF and Santa Fe have good dance programs and there's a number of men and women therefore into dance--to say nothing of the professional dance and theatre activities going on in town. What really makes Arabesque is the owner: she's a sweet, charming, woman very interested in the business she runs. I went in looking for a rather specialized article of clothing that she didn't have (a mesh top) and she made every effort to try to track down something to suit my needs. I finally found just the thing by American Apparel, but her willingness to help and friendly approach will bring me back to her store should I ever have need to buy anything they might sell.

The woman in the store failed to tell me this before I tried on the shoes, and only told me after the fact, essentially forcing me to buy the pair of shoes that I was on the fence about. I ended up buying the shoes because I did not want to pay the $10 fee, and knew I was going to use them eventually. The shoes are fine, but I felt so violated and manipulated as a customer that it made me not want to return. Regarding the fee, there was no posted sign or notice in sight. Maybe this is a common occurrence in dance stores, but this was not a pleasant surprise, and I know the FTC and BBB will not be happy to hear about this deception and misrepresentation of pricing.
