Dr. Dresser is rude and condescending. He won't let pet parents into the examination room, just discusses their condition in the waiting area. Always tries to sell you on the most expensive treatments and acts like you're a bad person if you don't do everything he says. He tried to claim my cat had back pain. $500 worth of x rays, he didn't see anything wrong so recommended an MRI, which probably would have cost a couple thousand dollars. My cat never showed any signs of back pain, not then and not now. I haven't gone back since. My new vet is much better read more

I called this vet place to register an initial exam for a baby kitten I just adopted from the humane society . I called on a Thursday, and the receptionist was very rude when she found out I had a free exam voucher from the humane society that this Clinic had included in their paperwork, she put me on hold right away and then went on to say that she would call me back to Schedule the exam . It's Saturday and she never called me back. I have gone ahead and call The Animal Clinic in Kahului instead and they were just the sweetest to me and were so happy to have my kitten examen and registered with pet services . I live in kihei and have been a resident for 18 years and I feel this was horrible costumer service and the community should know ! read more

I understand that doctors of any specialty have to remain a little emotionally disconnected from their work, but there also needs to be a healthy amount of compassion given to the animals and their owners. After all, you're treating someone's family. Dressler gives off the impression of someone who can't be bothered to care at all. He has this cold nature to him that just seems very inappropriate for an animal care facility. I'll echo what others have also said: He has a way of speaking that feels like he's talking down to you. Not only are you getting priced gouged on vet fees, but you're also getting belittled in the process. How fun. Maybe the belittling is part of the exorbitant fees. Since I don't feel like describing his behavior any further, I'd suggest just looking up synonyms for "condescending." It's not only the main doctor, but the staff seems like they're all the same too. There's just an air of coldness from everyone there. Birds of a feather flock together. The receptionist? Rude and off-putting. Not a fan. The vet assistants? They were super rough with my dog when handling him. We brought him in to take an X-ray of his leg, and my dog being the rambunctious type, naturally made it difficult. And naturally, the assistant basically tried to pin my dog still. What's that? You need patience when working with animals? Apparently not. On another occasion, the vet assistant took my dog into the examination room only to come out shortly after to show me that my dog's collar broke. How much fucking force were you using on my 14 year old dog? I don't care how many academic accolades you have or how good your overpriced treatments might be. Compassion and soft skills are something not learned in school. I've had mechanics that showed me more care for my piece of shit beater. I would recommend this place if you're the type of owner that does not give a shit about their pet because this place will do the same! read more

Dr. Dressler, from the moment we walked in, made it sound like we have no idea what we're doing owning a dog... even though we have owned dogs all our life! Our dogs are our family to us and we would do anything for them. But when we went in with our 12 y/o girl and he asked..."Do you really want to help her get better??" DUH, are you serious?! "Well then" he said, "We can do tests and it will cost you $2,000 plus. And acupuncture may help her also". Who does acupuncture on dogs I asked? "Well, I do of course" he said. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET TO THIS VET AT ALL COSTS!!!!! I would give this place minus 10 stars if I could. Dr.Dresslers was an absolute nightmare to work with from start to finished. He used scare tactics to have me remove 3 of my dog's teeth which I later found after I switched vets, was extremely overpriced at $2,000! This place does not have an x-ray machine to even look at the dog's teeth like most places do. So how was he so sure they needed to be removed from a 3 min glance at his mouth?! While I was in the waiting room ALL 4 people that came in to get their pets were also picking up from getting their dog's teeth removed. Seems like this is "his thing". The day of my dog's surgery, I go into the office and they have NO CLUE that I'm on the books for that day. I took the day off work and was mentally prepared to have my dog go under. The front desk lady said she must have forgotten to put in the computer..... odd since this was such an urgent matter that needed to be taken care of right away " or the infection would spread throughout his body" Before the opt, Dressler said my dog needed to get a bunch of tests to make sure he was good to go under and that ran me $550.00. So The morning of his opt I already have a bad feeling about this place and show some concern for their forgetfulness. My concern was met with TOTAL disrespect from Dressler. There was no apology for forgetting my dogs surgery just rude remarks on how its not a big deal and he wanted to make sure" I WAS MENTALLY ABLE TO HANDLE MY DOG GOING IN FOR SURGERY". Are you fricken kidding me. The crap this man said to me made me sick to my stomach. Totaly talked down to me and acted like a was an idoit. His conclusion was that If I don't like him then to take my dog somewhere else. Ummm wow.... Had I not already spend $550.00 on my dog's tests to make sure he was able to go under I %100 would take him elsewhere. Unfortunately, I do not have that kind of extra cash laying around to do another around of test so I stick with this @ss hole. IT GETS BETTER PEOPLE!!! After my dog's surgery, he kept getting sick every time i gave him his antibiotics. Not trusting that place I take him somewhere else and that vet said my dog was taking over double the amount of MG that he should be and that's why he was sick. I never write reviews but I cant get this out of my head. My dog is 14 and has never been sick or hurt. I will start by saying the lady at the front desk was so sweet. I came in with my dog limping . 3 weeks after I went in to get her nails trimmed ( way too short and wont let you watch) , the groomer also said she cut her hair in her paws. Not sure if this is a coincidence but she started limping and her paw turned red shortly after. They swore up and down it could not be from that. I was 4 min late and walked in being told we had to rush since I was late. I was spoken down the entire time by the doctor and the assistant who couldn't even say hello back. The doctor was rude to me and his assistant. He spoke to her with no respect maybe thats why she was so hard on the edges. They were really rough with my elderly dog . Her paw is red and clearly has an infection. His words: "I'm not buying it " He refused to think this red paw was what was causing her to limp. He Wanted to sedate her entire body and do x-rays and blood work. I get that she may need that done to do a full check up which is great but never once did he offer any advice on how to help her paws infection. He offered some advice with a $1500 estimate- I declined as I could not handle his arrogant behavior. His response when the assistant said I was declining " HA, wow really" and slammed the door. The assistant said they have natural options as well and when I asked what she said I dunno google it. Also your a doctor who charges $50 for 15 min- wear a clean shirt and no slippas - I get its Hawaii but there was no professionalism across the board. I will never go back- I used some paw all natural crack healing cream , bone and joint vitamins for dogs and she has already stopped limping. I am not a vet but when I see a red bruised paw I would start there before sedating an elderly dog. read more

Do yourself a favor & go somewhere else. I took my 20yr old cat in for a couple of tests & specifically said call me if you want to do more things. At the end of the day & $700 later, she had had all sorts of testing that hadn't been on the day's agenda. She's 20! Of course she has things wrong with her but don't make me spend an arm and a leg looking for all those things-- without asking me! We got a new cat, and for some reason, even though he thinks the vet here must have asked burgers by the way he treats people, He chose to go here for the free Humane Society wellness check. Our new kitten ended up having a goopy eye. My husband paid $250 here to treat it. Turns out, the Humane Society would have treated him for free. read more

We were happy with Dr. Dresser. We thought he knew a lot about our particular breed. He treated him for almost 3 years , including diagnosing a bad heart. We gave our dog heart pills twice a day as directed. However when we returned to mainland and went to our original vet, she listened to his heart and found no evidence of a heart problem. We were shocked and asked for another opinion. Same result. So then we paid for a dog cardiologist to xray him. Result there was no heart problem at all. He was normal. If we had continued giving him the heart pills, he could have died. Now he is so much more active and energetic. We stopped going to that vet. read more

This review is specifically for the veterinary care I received. I can tell that there is an inconsistent fan base for Dr. Dressler, and well, I actually had a reasonably good experience. I don't know if I am a "fan'" yet, as four stars imply, but overall, it was a decent experience. Yes, he is quite knowledgeable and I feel like he loves to talk. I brought in my cat who was limping and wasn't himself. I was worried, and they scheduled me for a same-day appointment. Upon examination, Dr. Dressler explained the various things he was looking for, and he was listening to my answers to his questions and then checking again with the cat with his assistant. He was going to keep the cat for x rays. His assistant provided me with an estimation of the bill. The bill upon pick up of my cat was pretty close the estimate, with the exception of the medications he prescribed for our cat's treatment. When I came to pick up the cat, I had to wait a bit due to a few people picking up their pets. He came with a typed up description of his thoughts as to what was happening with our cat. He smiled nicely. He explained his typed letter to me, and further added the way he came to his conclusions. We left that office with three medications for our cat which likely has a soft tissue injury and is running a fever. We paid about $500. I will say this: Dr. Dressler is, I think, more of an animal person than a people person. When he spoke to me I felt he was talking to "the owner of the cat" and not really me, as a person. I didn't feel like I was talked down to, as some have reported, but I was corrected by Dr. Dressler about some assumptions I made about what I thought may be wrong with the cat. That was a little off-putting but it didn't wreck my day. He also went through the motions of how to give the medications to my cat and seemed a bit miffed that I thought I would put it in his food. Nope. I have to administer it orally, prior to eating, or just about food time. My impression is that here is a man who has been doing something for years, and he just bowls over you with his knowledge, which could be a good thing or it could be a bad thing. Again, I had a decent experience. I plan on returning so far. read more

I am so grateful to all 'ohana at South Shore -- the little kitty I found starving and sick on the East Side (Lou), is glossy, happy, healthy and loving his new life in Portland!! Five weeks along and he's got it goin' on! Dr. Dressler and the staff were wonderful to him and me .. I had never needed a vet in Kihei before when visiting but boy did Lou need a bunch of help -- he didn't look awful yet, but had a bad respiratory infection, ear fungus, hookworm and the consequences of living rough ... but he wasn't wild, he trusted good people and was pretty chill about everything. (Including two airplane flights, another thing the staff coached me through.) I expect I won't need a vet on future trips to Kihei but I will never forget South Shore -- mahalo from me and Lou! read more

Care for my dog is good, yet the customer care is poor. The person at the desk is lacking empathy and is very unfriendly. Yes, this person is great with dogs but not with the human. Time to find a new vet. I can go anywhere and be talked down to. I spoke with another vet in town and was treated with respect and they were more than willing to work with me on making it a little bit easier economically. We have been going to South Shore since we came from the mainland and I have left their office feeling very sad every-time. This time, I needed more heart worm medicine and unless I spend almost 300 bucks they will not give me any more medicine for flea tick and heart worm. I'd rather pay someone else all that money who is at least can show a little empathy and respect. read more

I took my female into Dressler to be spayed! What a mistake! He did such a hack job. He didn't even match up the edges of her skin before suturing her up, so of course it got infected! For a dog diagnosed with heartworm on 3/20/17 he sure is doing just fine. It is my opinion that this doctor conspired with a local groomer to euthanize our pet because of the breed and on the recomendation of the groomer ( who was addicted to meth at the time). Our dog was casterated, Ashley Jones was listed as the owner not myself or my fiance.What they quoted for treatment was either $329. Or one for $370 or a guaranteed result with living dog for $635.00 we were never given a tag to show our dog had shots for bordetella, canine annual, dhpp, fecal, heartworm vac., and we never paid a dime.it was allegedly covered by the groomer. Why am I displeased? Because the vet and the groomer conspired to euthanize my dog via heartworm treatment for the groomer who had other animals in her household including ours which was a large inconvenience for her. The assistants were kind enough but the fact that my dog lost his balls for no good reason and was nearly administered a deadly dose intentionally has me concerned for other owners of this breed. I would restrict my visits to this doctor to only lap dogs. As Maui seems to be reluctant to treat the Staffordshire terrier as a viable breed. I think everyone was frightened by our dog and sentenced him to death out of fear for the general public. The dog is alive and well today 7/1/18 and has a new girlfriend and a pet kitty cat. I think this place is bias and expensive and takes medical/treatment advice from third parties lacking proper training in the field, and experience with the animal. I won't be back .we left island and our dog shows no symptoms of heartworm. We are reluctant to invest in a second opinion for fear of the same conspiracy. Our beloved animal is currently safe, happy and treated. I waited to see if he would decline before posting this review. I went to this vet twice, and I'm not a regular yelp reviewer nor I do any reviews but with two s****y visits and after $800+ on just the most recent single visit I expected much more. Their staff was very rude, All of them acted in a way as if they were better then anyone in there. And it wasn't just one conversation but the entire time especially the doctors assistant. And when she took my dog she just grabbed her like rag doll.. which instantly made me really pissed. When I went to go pick up my dog that day you could tel late was really traumatized. My dog is really nice but when I brought her back for a follow up " I had to" she couldn't stop barking at everyone. And when we got there instead of it being a "follow up" it turned into a "second office visit" with more stuff to pay for... Its crazy, I feel like they aren't there to help your pets but to profit, that's the vibe I got an I'll NEVER go to this office again. And for all you pet loving parents. Very unsatisfied with the service and end result. I took my dog in to get her nails trimmed and she left without one! Somehow while they were trimming them they broke it, and they pulled it off, and then had the nerve to say she came in like that! I got her back with a crooked nail and bloody paw and they weren't going to say and do anything. I couldn't even see my dog til I paid. She has not been the same all day and seems sad and honestly I feel like she's been traumatized. When the groomer tried to take her back to fix the problem she was trying so hard to get away. Staff seemed more concerned about me not getting pissed off, and finding someone else to blame than the state they left my dog in. Will not be back. read more

Worst vet experience ever! money hungry rude. If that jerk says Carnell one more time... Came for second opinion so he could look at my xray of my poor dog Rosco's head ( bone cancer of skull). He instantly wanted to do a bone biopsy which I had already decided I would not do since there was nothing that could be done and knew how painfull it was. (Poor guy s head hurt so bad already you could not pet him) They then wanted to try to grasp at straws and think maybe he had valley fever from 4 years ago that had stayed dormant till now. Wanted $1700 dollars to do painfull test for things that could not be fixed. Will never leave my vet again They where not being aggressive so I felt bad like I was not doing enough. But that's all that could be done. rosco passed a week later then south shore vet a month later sends me a postcard of a sad picture they took of my dog when we came in tellin us t get his teeth cleaned. I cried and called them and asked them to remove us from their mailing list. They apologized and said they would. About 2 months later another post card sad. Dead. Dog. I called back angry now again apologized and said it would be removed. 2 months later what's in my mailbox but my dead dogs sad pic. I instantly called and left an outraged message got on Facebook and left them a post pleading for them to stop. They managed to remove my post and block me within minutes. Why could they not remove my poor friends photo and me from the mailing list so quickly? Nobody should have to see their best dog friend sad photo every few months after they have lost them:( shame on this vets office You guys suck. I was warned about you before I came by some of the best pet owners. They said you made them feel like bad dog owners if they did not do your outrageous pet care. read more

I'm my opinion, Dr Dressler Has horrible bedside manner.. Uses scare tactics To get you to want to pay 3500. For a exploratory surgery.. Told me we need to make a quick decision.. That's It's a 50 /50 chance and He may just bleed out on the table . Said its "serious business" , as if I don't know that already since I brought my dog in otherwise I wouldn't have. He Told me he won't be able to explain to my other half what he just explained to me.. ( he was going into surgery ) but the way he said it and the way he just handed the whole situation was unbelievable. Too high maka maka in my opinion. We ended up paying the 860. bill that gave us basically his blood test results and 3 X-rays that were too fuzzy for them to read so that's probably the reason he wanted to do a pricey exploratory surgery . Maybe if he took better X-rays or an ultrasound he may would have seen that this was a non surgical matter. Thank goodness he spoke like such pompous arrogant dr. that we decided to grab our dog and go elsewhere . Our dog is still alive and did not need surgery . If he were to have opened him up that day we proably would have lost him and still had to pay 3500 for it! Always follow your gut And get a second opinion when it doubt. His staff on the other hand especially Christine and Carol are wonderful and the tech Christine really cares about your animal and has more experience than the vet himself , ( it seemed that way to me.) . He's all over the Internet as the cancer doctor for dogs which is funny cause he didn't mention cancer or the possibility of it. The other vet that we went to did a aspiration and a cytology and found the cancer cells and said it would be disastrous if he had had surgery since his blood platelets were so low and he could of bled out and we needed more info to determine how to proceed. I don't like to leave bad reviews but truly this was the worst experience Ive ever had with vets or Drs. and I've been to many with years of having dogs. It was a very emotional and heart wrenching day that I needed to leave this because my dog is everything to me And I appreciate it when I read reviews that can help when making big decisions that can change a persons life. I want people to get a second opinion in crazy situations like this . We Saved our dog by doing so and a big chunk of credit Card debt. I know in some situations there is no time but this one was made to seem like there was only 1 option and that was surgery to save my dog and to make a decision quick . I give the one star for the receptionist. I am a new cat owner, and I found a rescue that ended up being sick... Making the appt was great, the lady was so kind and helpful. Once I got to the back of the house it was a whole other story! This Doctor (Dressler) is such condescending guy! I couldn't believe the way he as talking to me? I am nice, polite, and was very engaged in helping my kitten... and all's I got from him was smart-ass comments... the whole appt! He decided on bronchitis and gave us antibiotics and mirtazapine to increase my kitties appetite. I was told the first visit was free, because he is a rescue. Well, they tried to charge me. They also charged 48 dollars for 1 pill of that drug, and almost 60 for the antibiotic. I am a nurse... and I can tell you, for certain, this is price gouging at its greatest! When we left I asked the front desk lady if this was a "bad day" for this doctor because if not, I would not be returning. She said he'd done a lot of surgeries and was "mostly nice," but just had a really bad morning. I laughed it off and left. About 45 mins later my kitten started having a reaction to the mirtazapine. He started breathing SUPER fast! Like 120 breaths a minute fast. I looked it up and found it was a possible reaction and that their was another medication to counter act it. So I called back the doctor. The desk lady kept saying well, the doctor says you should take your car for an X-ray, to the hospital... I finally just told her that I wasn't taking my cat in for X-ray and pay hospital rates when my kitten didn't have this symptom "prior" to the administration of that medication! I told her that she needed to ask the doctor to script the remedy. She reluctantly left me on the phone to go back and talk to him again. She came back with the name of the new medication, and tells me it's over the counter, and can be bought at "any" Longs. I live across the street from a big Longs, so I was quick to run over.... I looked, I looked more, then I waited in a line at the pharmacy to be told that the medication was by script only! Soooooo, I called back! In the end, the script got called in, but I had to wait an hour to pick it up... meanwhile my kitty was suffering! The desk lady was super apologetic.
