The first lady explained to me they were short staffed so she had to close early so she could get off on time, but she still asked me what I wanted and was nice enough to go to the back and get it anyway. The second lady said the same thing - they were short staffed - but didn't offer to do anything and had an "oh well" attitude. I've now wasted gas and two trips to the deli that's supposed to be OPEN UNTIL 8PM like the signage says. I feel for the workers wanting to get off on time and the store being short staffed, however, that is not the problem of the consumer. Ralph's should adhere to their deli times and figure this out, or change the times so we're not inconvenienced. If I arrive at 7pm, there's no excuse for everything being packed up an hour early. 10-15 minutes I understand, but an hour is ridiculous.

This amount significantly exceeds what California sales tax would justify and is higher than the advertised price. I'm sharing this for transparency so others can double-check their receipts. I refuse to support local businesses engaging in this behavior.

A-1 is an Italian market with an Italian deli counter that just does Italian and other sandwiches right. The guy with the mustache working the meat counter has been there for years. I haven't been back in many years but other than higher prices and moving the cashier to the other side of the aisle, it was like walking into a time warp. My steak sandwich was huge and the meat was as tender as I remember. So glad a friend mentioned he saw someone on social media who gave A-1 a glowing review that led us to grabbing sandwiches and hanging out at Averill Park to catch up on things. The staff was friendly and helpful. The only negative might be the parking which is street only. We got lucky and it wasn't very busy this is not always the case. There isn't anyplace to eat in the market but there is a park across the street. They do have some shady characters hanging around at times so you might want to find a different location to eat your food if you're not taking it home.

This place has been here for a a while, a friend claims it's changed ownership, but I'm unsure if that's a fact. Either way, you're sure to find what you need and a few things you don't but you'll pick them up anyway because, well, Italy! On this visit, I procured some deli delights: soppressata, provolone, hot Italian sausage, caprese salad with pine nuts (nice touch) and marinated olives. A few cans of tomatoes, and some chocolate wafer cookies. I considered spumoni, but I didn't have a way to keep it cold for the drive home. Note to self: plan for cold storage next time! Service was swift and friendly. An offer to help with the bags out to the car. They don't have a parking lot, so street parking is it. Wear your patience hat because when it's busy, parking is a challenging. I'd say the only thing missing is a true Italian bakery. That's the one feature that puts a dent in my wallet...well, that and canned tomatoes. Why are canned tomatoes so darn expensive?? That DOP designation seems to add extra $$$. Overall, this place is a good option for shopping Italian products, albeit a bit out of the way for me so I'll likely only stop here when I'm in town.

Poor Customer Service and Unprofessional Conduct…read more On November 22, 2025, I purchased Horizon Organic Milk at the Smart & Final located at 2775 Pacific Coast Highway in Torrance, CA. The next day, November 23, we discovered the milk was sour. On November 24, 2025, I went to a different Smart & Final location ( 1636 W 25th Street, San Pedro, CA 90732 ) early in the morning to exchange the product. I had my receipt with me. The cashier informed me that they could not exchange it because I bought it at the Torrance location. I politely asked to see that policy in writing. At this point, the manager, Manny, came over. Unfortunately, he was not friendly or helpful. He insisted I had to drive back to the Torrance store and even questioned why I purchased it there. His tone made the situation feel unnecessarily hostile. I explained that I did not have time to return to Torrance because I needed to take my son to a dentist appointment. Instead of providing assistance, he responded with comments such as: * "It's not my problem." * "I can't sell this milk." I again asked to see the policy in writing. Manny initially said it would take a minute, then changed his tone and accused me of "playing games," even though I was simply requesting clarification. After going back and forth, he finally stated that I could exchange the milk after all. I returned inside and exchanged it for the same brand. When I mentioned I would write a review about the experience, the manager followed me outside the store and loudly said: "Make sure you write that you bought the bad milk at the other store. Let's be fair here." This behavior was completely unprofessional and made me feel uncomfortable. I was planning to purchase additional groceries (bananas and apples), but after this treatment, I decided not to spend any more money at this location. I sincerely hope upper management reviews the store footage from that morning. A manager should never escalate a situation or follow a customer outside the store. Basic customer service training and familiarity with consumer rights--such as California Civil Code 1723--are essential.
