Very nice park. The staff is very nice and helpful. But they need to spend more time with bathhouse cleanliness

Our tax money has helped transform this park into a beauty!!! The visitor center, 4 gorgeous bird blinds and trail signage are beautiful! They even have EV charging stations now. The camping sites are pretty private with vegetation separating them. So much to explore here (including a small cemetery). Tubing the river is popular. Beautiful aromatic wildflowers throughout the park. This is truly an underrated park.

I came here for a fun weekend kayaking and camping trip. This is a dark sky park, so the stars were nice to see. I booked the campsite three weeks in advance for the beginning of March, and I wasn't able to find the same campsite for both Friday and Saturday. I picked 007 in the electric area for the first night and 006 for the second night. It's a good idea to look at the campsite map when you book because 007 was in a lovely secluded area, while 006 was in the middle and wide open. The campsite sleeps up to eight people. There were clean bathrooms and showers, which felt like such a luxury after a day of paddling and swimming. We rented from South Llano River Kayaks and shuttled with them to paddle about 11 miles back to their shop. The river was beautiful with some fun, easy rapids and treacherous rope swings. On Sunday, we hiked the overlook trail and explored the turkey roost trails. The overlook trail provided a very sad, dead view. In the turkey roost area, we only saw two turkeys from afar. I would not come here expecting to see a wild turkey show. This is a river park though, and the paddling was great.

A nice place place to hike, walk, ride a bike, float the river and gaze at the stars. It's a beautiful place to connect to nature.

A slice of Paradise under the Texas skies. I only wished there place to place our kayaks without having to hike up and down dangerous trails to place them into the water. I have a bone disease, which makes me a little more cautious. I did notice they are working to improve the park. Hopefully they include a safer place for people enter and exit with their kayaks.

You can get all the details about camping, picnicking, etc. on the TPWD website, so I won't address any of that. Instead, I'll focus on the trails! For starters, this state park has PERFECT trail signage - it's the FIRST state park I've found that I can honestly say this about. None of the trails are rough, treacherous, or rocky, but there are a couple of modest elevation gains on Golden Cheeked Warbler Trail and West Canyon Trail. The "Front Country" has plenty of shade, but the "Back Country" is mostly in the sun, so bring a hat and/or plenty of sunscreen. Overlook Trail is actually an old paved road, but it's very steep. So steep that they don't let bicycles on it. Great views of the park from the top of this trail, so take a few minutes to check this one out. Great views from GCW trail too. From OCT through MAR, the Front Country trail areas are only open from 10a to 3p so as not to disturb the wild turkeys when they roost.

This is my favorite Texas State Park. I keep coming back. The trails are well maintained and have interesting variety. The back country trails are very distinct from the river trails. During spring and summer when the sun is out the river is a spectacular turquoise color reminiscent of the Caribbean Sea. This is one of the premiere birding destinations in Texas. Their bird blinds are phenomenal, particularly mid-May to late July. Painted and Indigo Buntings abound. I have also seen Blue Grosbeaks on the river trails. The armadillos are abundant! I have seen more here than anywhere else in Texas by far. The rangers are soooo nice! Not that they aren't nice in other Texas State Parks but the ones here seem extra warm and friendly!

This park is AMAZING! It's clear as day that safety & conservation is their top priority.

This is a great park with some nice water features. It is very similar to most other state parks as far as features go, so I won't really expand on that. At the entrance of the park you pass over a bridge. The river goes under that bridge and it is a perfect spot where lots of people hang out. Make sure to bring an inner tube for the kids, as the water speeds up under the bridge and empties into a large pool. You can also go tubing on the river if you're willing to park halfway between the bridge and the takeout point closer to the campsites. It's not a thrill ride, but it's a nice relaxing float. There's also a pond you can go fishing at, but I've never caught anything there other than some tiny bluegill (which made my daughter happy). Lots of critters everywhere, especially at night. The only ding on SLRSP is its relative isolation from other places. That's not an issue for a lot of people, so if you're in that category then my review should be 5 stars for you.

What used to be a working ranch is now a beautiful family friendly state park. Camping with water and electric sites for RVs and tents and also walk-in and primitive sites for tents only. Restoom facility have private showers with hot water and flushable toilets and cleaned everyday. The staff are great. Very knowledgeable and friendly. I noticed the State Police / Game Wardens patrol the park frequently which is a plus in my book. No Silly it's not like you're in a prison camp. It just keeps the Riff Raff out if you know what I mean? I go camping to enjoy the peace and quiet of the outdoors not to experience frat parties. Anyway I encountered a lot of Wildlife while on all the trails. From Whitetail and axis deer, squirrels, opossum, armadillos, Hogs, Roadrunners, Red tail lizards, rabbits and turkeys. Speaking of turkeys. It is home to one of the largest Roost areas in Texas to the Rio Grande turkey. They also have numerous bird blind sanctuaries placed throughout the park which are really cool. Seen some beautiful birds and rock squirrels. Oh my Heavens did I mention the Stars? South Llano River State Park is also a international dark sky Park. Which basically means the stars are amazing at night. If you like to hike, bike, tube or kayak they have it here at this park. I mountain biked over 20 miles of beautiful, steep, rugged, easy, scenic, hard, breathtaking trails they had to offer. The backcountry was the best. I was absolutely all alone. Not a soul in sight. Perfect so peaceful and quiet but know how to read a map mind you some phones or GPS do not work back there. The park headquarters do offer GPS devices and believe it or not people have been lost back there. FYI.. bring plenty of water, some snacks and sunscreen. I Hiked to the top of the highest point in the ranch to the amazing Scenic Overlook at sunset and kayaked 2 miles up the beautiful, spring-fed South Llano River. Most of the people preferred to tube down the river or play at the bridge area. The park do offer rentals for tubes and also there is a place that rents kayaks nearby. Also there is a Lowes grocery store in Junction which is about 4 miles from the park. So Once again if you like to getaway like myself and go camp, hike, bike, tube, kayak and enjoy the beauty of nature like myself. You must come visit South Llano River State Park.

We camped for two nights with two dogs in mid-Sept (after Labor Day) and it was surprisingly very crowded. Really nice water/electric drive-in camp. I hear the primitive sites are 1.8 mile hike and no open pit fires allowed. Bathrooms and showers were clean and kept near our site. Mostly older folks when we went so the atmosphere was very chill and quite for sleeping--no loud parties. Lock up your food at night--the armadillos are not afraid of people. We kayaked the South Llano River both Sat and Sun with our dogs. Drop-in around noon at 377 bridge, upstream from the park (30°21'43.5"N 99°53'21.4"W). Plenty of parking and very easy unload gear. From there we paddled the trail back to the state park bridge. Our pace was casual so we finished in 6-7 hrs. We only passed one other fishing canoe but otherwise river was deserted--very tranquil water and peaceful scene. It was between 11-12 miles of paddling. In general though, this part of the trip was very slow moving and had a lot of large pools good for fishing. On day two, we again kayaked but this time dropped in at the state park bridge and continued paddling downstream on the trail to Flatrock Ln in Junction, TX. BTW, Flatrock Ln bridge is very, very nice place to play with your dog, have a picnic, or in our case, relax after a day of kayaking. This leg of the trip took ~4 hrs which included a 1 hour break for swimming along the way. In general, this stretch was shallower and consequently has faster moving water. Dogs liked it more because they could run along with us instead of swim. Just for your reference, before we left, I looked for "Llano Rv nr Junction, TX" on USGS website and their chart showed Discharge, CFM around 100. That being said, I probably wouldn't plan to kayak if the flow was much less. There were several places along the way where kayak touched bottom.

We plan stops every 3ish hours. Kid's Kingdom was one such stop. Obviously I peeped the pics ahead of time, so I was expecting a pretty nice large play area.. but we all know pics can be deceiving. Not here. The mulch, grass, fences, and equipment are all really well maintained. The picnic area and trash cans are kept clean. It's right across from the San Angelo River walk (which is really pretty, but we didn't check it out). There's a little body weight type of work out spot just a few feet away under the bridge, and plenty of benches or spots to sit on all throughout the equipment. My personal favorite thing about the playground was the tandem baby swing. My youngest loves swinging, but she gets a real quick when I get to do it with her! My oldest got a kick out of the huge sandbox (I didn't so much) Down sides? Even though there are a few covered spots sprinkled throughout the equipment, and a little shade from the surrounding trees, most of the playground gets direct sunlight. It's summer time in TX, so it was a cool 98-100 degrees while we were there. Some canopies would've made a huge difference! Also, even though the outhouse style (although flushable) toilets were kept generally clean, the smell of sewage was pretty severe when you got close. Yuck. Overall, though, great playground!

The trail isn't too hard; I did the east loop going clockwise since the volunteers told me there was probably a little better foliage along this loop than the west loop. I was able to do the whole thing and return to where I started in a little under 2 hours. It was a relatively warm day; I was grateful i bought my personal fan when going up the steep part because I was definitely starting to sweat! After that though it was mostly flat and then back downhill so no issues with getting hot. I got several lovely photos along the way and was certainly reminded how gorgeous and colorful Texas can be! Only note: be sure to make a timed entry reservation if you go during the peak season (fall) because it absolutely sells out! I tried going with a friend last year and we didn't have a res and we were turned away - we ended up going to Garner state park which is also gorgeous and fun, about 30 mins drive away from lost maples. This year we got entry for the 11a-1p entry time, and by the week or so prior to going, everything was sold out for that Saturday we were going. So bear that in mind!

Fantastic municipal park!…read more After a second year at this park, I can say that we love this park. This park is adjacent to the "mighty" Guadalupe River, and in particular Kerville's dammed in Guadalupe Lake, where the park's inhabitants can fish, swim, SUP, kayak, and pretty much anything else you can do in a small body of water. Our scouts had a fantastic time, they spent the entire day in the water... and would have spent the night, had we let them. The grounds on the river side are clean, but fully to semi- exposed to the sunlight, which can be brutal in the Texas summers. This side also has cabins, two docks and a recreation space for events. All were being utilized, but everybody was respectful and friendly. We did cross the highway to hike some of the trails on the opposite side of the park. We found various trails of 3-5 miles of length. There were more cabins and camping spots on this side. All was well maintained. The there are four shower/bathrooms at the top of the camp site, a dumpster for collected trash, and marked campsites. There are spigots for drinking water spread amongst the available campsites, but they are not at every one. The Kerrville City Parks facilitators were always patrolling and attentive to our needs. This park is a beautiful city park, and worth considering for your outdoor activities.

It was always enjoyable and a mere 4 miles from my home. But then I was seduced. Yes, Gentle Reader, seduced by the Kerrville River Trail. The concrete, 10-foot-wide trails sang their siren song, beckoning me. Ah, at first I resisted but one day after a rain that would leave the Kerrville-Schreiner Park's trails muddy and inhospitable, I succumbed and became a willing prisoner of concrete bliss. Don't get me wrong, the River Trail is excellent and I'm sure that after heavy rains, I'll find myself there again for awhile. But the River Trail is undeniably an urban trail as it winds its way past roads and buildings--there is no seclusion and as the years past, a secluded spot to walk was what I desired. So, to Kerrville-Schreiner Park I returned. Things had changed. The annual pass fee had doubled to $50. Still, a pittance considering I go a minimum of three days a week. If I chose to pay by the day, a year's use would be $882! And that's allowing for the approximately three weeks in December when the park is closed because of the bow hunters culling the deer population. So, $50 is still very much a bargain. And the fee also includes access to Flat Rock Lake where fishing and boating await you. I was delighted to find that two trails had been added in my absence, the Deer Field Loop and the Teal Trail. Plus, there were add-ons to the Red and Yellow Trails. The new trails are serpentine, weaving their way back and forth through the trees. Both are narrow trails with gentle ups and downs. You will find some areas rocky but still easily navigated. And for those days when the Texas sun is relentlessly beating down, these new trails will provide ample shade, And the add-ons to the Yellow and Red Trails are very similar. So, I'm back and I could swear I heard the trees whisper, "Welcome back, Doc; we've missed you." The feeling's mutual! Whether you're a resident or visitor, consider visiting this Hill Country gem. The trees just might talk to you, too.
