Probably my new favorite place to eat when I'm in York. The Cheateaubriand dairy cow steak here may…read morebe the most tender steak I've ever had, and I've had a lot of steaks in a lot of countries. I am rarely this impressed by steak quality outside of the US. And the wine list! Orin Swift (the famous maker of Papillon), Stag's Leap, and lots of lesser known but still excellent brands from around the world. This is going to be my first stop next time I'm in York. My only comment -- but maybe this is just from an American used to farm-to-table food -- is that just like everywhere else in England, I wish there were fewer fried things and more vegetables on the menu (although the tomato side salad was amazing). Still the freshest, most farm-to-table type of meal I've had in York.

After two different people recommended this restaurant, we thought we would definitely try it. We…read morearrived at 5:30, the first customers of the evening. Waitstaff were very attentive and friendly. Hubby ordered onion rings which were hand battered and delicious. I ordered cod and vegetable risotto which were fine but not remarkable. Broccolini with blue cheese sauce barely had any blue cheese or sauce and was hard, not cooked really much at all. I left half of the serving. We had bread pudding for dessert which was also okay. I didn't find the seasoning of the food to be adequate and maybe salt and pepper on the table would have helped this. By the time our food came out, the waitstaff was busy so I didn't have a ready opportunity to ask for salt. And should I have to ask? This place has a charming interior but i'd suggest drinks here, not dinner.

VJ's Cafe Bar is a great spot to grab some food and drink. Upon entering we found a spot by the…read morewindow. We ordered from the menu and our server was really sweet and attentive. I ordered a bowl of chili with cheesy garlic bread and chips on the side. I also asked for a water. My dining companion ordered an ale and the Mexican burger. The burger is topped with chili, jalapenos, and normally cheese. He ordered it without. The burger also comes with not only chips but onion rings as well. The drinks came out first and I was happy to see that the ice cubes were crystal clear. He was quite happy with the Black Sheep Ale. The English are notorious for their warm ales and we were curious to check them out. The food arrived promptly. By this time, it was 3 pm and I was starving. The chili was sadly one note. There were no hints of cumin or spice to it at all but it was beanless so that was nice. The chips were the perfect consistency. I didn't even mind putting malt vinegar with my chips at this point. For a ketchup only girl, this is huge. The cheesy garlic bread was made with ciabatta and it was quite tasty. It was also a little greasy too but it was cold out and I wasn't about to complain too much. My dining companion seemed to enjoy his meal as he cleared his plate. Food for me was 3 stars. But they get bumped up an extra star mostly because it seemed like a place that genuine locals liked to visit and that they were kind enough to keep my friend's gloves in a lost & found closet. We realized pretty quickly that he had left them behind so when we came back, they had them for us. I'm sure it happens a lot but it is nice to know that they do keep it in case you come back for it.

I've had food a couple of times in there too which was nothing spectacular but can't complain about it either. I don't go here that often as I prefer other places in York and VJs isn't that big so it can get a bit overcrowded in there.

I wasn't a fan of the cocktail flight because it was a bit foamy, but I had better luck with the food. Had a steak special that was reasonably priced and cooked well with a side of broccolini. Enjoyed a salad to start off my meal that was light and fresh. I enjoyed the decor of the establishment with a fun bar area and you could watch the food being prepared. We started off with one waitress and finished our dining experience with a different waitress who was in training but she was very sweet. Overall enjoyable dining experience.

When it arrived I thought 'hmm shrimp is not as big as I'd have thought' but then I tasted it and the sauce, shrimp, bread and veggies together were one of the best shrimp dishes I've ever had. I even saved the left over sauce (had it put in a ramekin) and put it on my steak. It was that good. My wife got the pork chops special and it was good too but the beans that were served with it were spectacular. Beans??? I didn't know they could be spectacular. Truffle chips (fries) were quality too. The home made black sheep sticky toffee pudding was also a must try. Lastly, Gosia, our waitress, was knowledgeable and took great care of us. When we are in York, we will be back.
