    Inside the venue
    Cristina D.

Definitely a fun spot for an intimate concert experience. I have been here a couple times for EDM-type performances. Some really great artists come through this spot. I saw Krewella and Vicetone. Much more low-key than EchoStage or the Anthem but totally fun in its own way. Specific takeaways: - Location: Very convenient, accessible by car, foot, taxi, metro-- right in the Dupont area. - Layout: Get super up close to the performers-- it almost feels like you are partying with the folks on stage. - Music: Great sound quality, both for live sets with instruments or electro mixes. There are less lights or lasers/visuals than other venues just because of the small space, but still a great environment for a show - Prices: Extremely affordable ticket prices - Wait: Almost no wait times-- they get folks in and out very quickly - Audience: FOr the concerts I attened, pretty young. Probably 21-35ish, with most people in their early 20s. People are a bit more chill than at Echostage, where there is a lot of pushing. There were several mosh pits breaking out at the Soudcheck concerts I attended though, if that is your thing. - Drinks: Good drinks, without too much of a wait, can be a little pricey, but that's really just DC for ya -Space: Can be a bit tight of a squeeze for more popular shows

a room with a lot of light coming from the ceiling

Brought to you by the owners of Echostage, Soundcheck is DC's newest intimate music venue for fans of electronic dance music. Located at the corner of 14th and K (at the space formally occupied by Lotus nightclub), Soundcheck is built like a recording studio with an abundance of soundproofing and is all about that "small room, big sound." Once you go down the stairs, you feel like you're in a different era. The club itself is decorated like the clubs of the '80s-'90s and their high-quality sound system and lighting is ON POINT. There's two shiny disco balls hanging down form the ceiling, one long bar next to the dancefloor, in addition to a private bar exclusive for the table area. There are tables located right in the back of the club as well as to the right of the DJ. Their lineup is already out for the next few months and they're bringing a ton of big acts that I'm looking forward to seeing. I can't wait to come back again soon!

Completely opposite of echostage which is a good thing! Our night continued and ended here with a performance by one of my favorite DJs, Mr. Gareth Emery. First, you go downstairs (watch your steps). Turn a couple corners and you're on the dance floor where there are tables in the back and the long bar on the sides. There are screens on both sides showing the dates of upcoming shows. There are several good ones coming up that I will try to involve myself with. The hallway had the restrooms and there will be lines. The venue holds up to 500 people being much smaller than echostage. However it's a bit more classier and with a more 21+ crowd than the 18+ crowd. I saw more wristbands than X marks so I felt more comfortable. Plus people seemed to dress more classy instead of wearing those ridiculous tutus and stuffed animal costumes. The experience is more intimate due to the compactness of the venue which also produces great sound. Quality = crystal clear, loud but no ringings. Also soundproof so when you go out for smoke breaks you don't have music pumping in your direction. Plus much cleaner! Staff (bartenders, security, door people) were nice and they seemed pleasant. I was skeptical because I read some reviews about their attitudes and customer service treatment but no complaints from me. Perhaps if you're nice to them, they'll be nice to you; and don't take anything personally since they are just doing their jobs. I guess some people don't get that part. This was my first and won't be my last time. It showed me that a smaller venue for edm music can be a better experience than a larger and crowded venue. I would assume the artists playing here feel the same as they have some great shows coming up. I look forward to attending if I can!

Alan Fitzpatrick getting the crowd going on

I came here for Alan Fitzpatrick, who got on at midnight. I danced my butt off! The sound is system is nothing to write home about, though it sounds pretty decent if you're very close to the front. The bar lines one large side of the space, so there's easy access. The bartenders were efficient ($8/ can of beer). There are bathroom attendants, though the stalls were still a bit of a mess by the end of the night. This is more about the DC crowd than the venue, but expect to be pushed around by other patrons who act super entitled. Still, this venue clearly is bringing in some good names. It was a very fun night.

Definitely not soundcheck. The crowd is 25 to 30 and people are allowed to smoke in the building. It's D.C. So not just cigarettes. If you like your music loud and ratchet this is the place for you.

You can also pay for a parking pass through their website but the lot only opens up an hour beforehand so be sure to plan your evening with that in mind. We ended up parking on the street for only $3 since we arrived early to grab dinner nearby. The entry line was super long and literally went around the block but it moved surprisingly fast. Staff was friendly and helpful at the door. The inside was dark when we arrived and it would've been nice to have some house lights so people could find their way around the venue a little easier. The AC was cranking and the temp was comfortable. Upstairs has standing room and some bleachers which provides a good view with less of a crowd. Their VIP area looks nice and I'd be interested in splurging next time for a seat and a better view. There's bars downstairs and upstairs and even some food concessions. Getting out of the venue from the balcony was a bit stressful with only one way out. It makes you imagine what would happen if you needed to get out in a rush... other than that, it's a good space.

I had a small bag and it was allowed into the venue after a quick bag check. I bought a last minute ticket at the door and they stamped my hand for entry. The main stage is on the upper level. I took the stairs (not sure if there's a public elevator) and as I headed up, there were signs stating "no stage diving or crowdsurfing"... this ain't the Fillmore! I didn't really explore the facilities or check out the restrooms, since I beelined to grab a good seat, but the checkered floor certainly gives the venue some character and makes it memorable. While a seated event isn't typical at this venue, the seats were basic folding chairs and tightly packed next to each other (I definitely rubbed shoulders with the people next to me). But overall, this is a great venue to see a show! Pros: - Intimate venue (no screens necessary) - Not overcrowded - Can buy tickets online in advance or at the box office in cash to avoid fees - Metro accessible (walkable from U Street Metro Station) Cons: - Limited box office hours (only open when they have shows) - Show start times aren't posted until a few hours before doors open (not good for planning purposes). 4.5 stars. Overall,…read morethis is a really great place to see a show. I came to see Flawed Mangoes and for the most part it was a great time. The venue is like a really clean dive bar that hosts live music. The staff were all very polite and incredibly welcoming. To be situated at the Wharf, the food and beverages were surprisingly affordable... at least by DC standards. The general admission tickets are for standing only. I paid for premium seating and got, well... an actual seat. Unfortunately, this is where I ran into issues. I really wish that Union Stage would offer more smaller tables (1-2 tops) because I had the unfortunate experience of being forced to involuntarily third-wheel some random couple's date night. As someone who frequently attends concerts alone, I hate communal seating. If I'm paying extra for a seat, I don't want to spend the evening sharing a table with strangers. In this case, the couple who joined me at my table spent much of the show carrying on conversations, using flash photography despite it being prohibited, and generally making themselves unwelcome part of my concert experience. It was distracting, annoying, and made it difficult to fully enjoy the performance. Adding more 1-2 top tables for solo concertgoers or couples would significantly improve the premium seating experience by giving people the option to enjoy the show uninterrupted and with the company they actually chose (and paid!) to spend the evening with. It's also worth noting that there is no wait staff to serve you at the tables. So if you grab a seat at a table, make sure you have something to put on the table to indicate that it is occupied. There are QR codes on the table where you can order and pay, but you still have to go to the floor to pick up your food. I got a half cheese pizza and an Aperol Spritz. The pizza was good by dive bar standards. Nothing special about it, but it hit the spot. The Aperol Spritz was also surprisingly good. The sound system is great. However, we need to talk about the lighting situation. I'm not sure if this is how Union Stage typically operates or if this is something that can be attributed to the artist, but the lighting choices for this concert were overwhelming. I've been to dozens of concerts over the course of my life, but I've never had spotlights that repeatedly point directly into the audience, but that was my experience throughout this entire show. I had to put on my sunglasses in this dark venue to keep myself from being quite literally blinded by the light. The background lights and everything were fine, but repeatedly shining spotlights into the crowd was not a good choice. The most expensive part of this night, by far, was the parking, which is not the fault of the venue. I paid $38 to park for 4 hours, but fortunately it was a very short walk to the venue. There are multiple parking garages as well as an extremely limited amount of street parking near this venue. The garage was the only feasible option that evening since so many people were out for the concert, viewing the World Cup, as well as attending events at other bars and restaurants in the general area. All told, I had a really great time at Union Stage. While I hate traveling into DC and I'm not keen on spending $40 on parking, if there's another artist performing at this venue that I want to see, I would definitely come back.

The music venue is located below the Hamilton, a storied dining experience in the 600 block of 14th Street in D.C. Doors would open at 6:30 p.m. for a performance that would begin, right on time, at 8 p.m. I travel alone, and prefer not to join tables, opting instead to sit where single seats are available. The Hamilton - Live offers both: most of the seating is in groups of 4- or 6-seat benches where groups gather, and there are rows of single seats on a slight rise above the forward seating, offering a great view of the stage and the screens above the stage. I arrived around 7 p.m. Within minutes Marie greeted me with a menu and instructions to post a card on a holder at my place, signaling her to stop by to take my order. The menu was eclectic, with sushi, pizza, tacos, salads, wings, cheeseburger sliders, and nachos. There are robust vegetarian and gluten-free selections, and a fully licensed bar. I placed the card in the holder at my seat and Marie returned to take my order: sushi - shrimp tempura ($14), with a can of Nutrl Pineapple ($8) and a double G&T ($23.18). The crowd was gathering, and the attending wait staff were moving with speed, filling orders. My meal arrived in great shape about 15 minutes after I placed the order. Nicely executed sushi! Sound quality in the venue is great, and the restroom was clean and well lit. And as the catalogues of both the Dead and Steely Dan inspire dancing, the dance floor was filled right from the start. The band's vibe was low key and spontaneous, with lots of smiling on the dance floor. Total with a 22% tip was $79 (which included a white Russian nightcap). Reasonable fare for the DMV.
