Republic Restoratives: a women-owned distillery in Ivy City that also sports a hip tasting room and cocktail bar. I walked on a Saturday afternoon and was welcomed by the staff, it was early in the day and I was the first customer. I stopped in for the 1:00 tour, but I had enough time to enjoy a drink beforehand at the bar. I ended up being the only one for the tour so I got to enjoy an intimate experience walking behind the scenes of their operation. My favorite part was going upstairs to see the area where they aged a few of their barrels. As a bourbon enthusiast, I loved taking a peak at what was cooking for future releases. At the end, I got a tasting of their core line-up: Assembly Gin, Borough Bourbon, Civic Vodka, and the Chapman's Apple Brandy. Craft spirits can be a hit or miss as a distillery learns to develop their young spirits. I'm happy to report this one is absolutely a hit. Their clear spirits are nice and clean while their whiskies are all solid. Republic Restoratives is a great stop if you are a spirits fan or just looking for a place to enjoy a cocktail. read more

It was a last-minute purchase and I was so impressed it made it to my home in time to celebrate my job or drown my sorrows. The Rye is delicious for sipping which two friends and I did through that unfortunate night. Purpose Rye restored my confidence. The aging smooths the edge of the flavor. I would like to find a way to order more without $20 shipping. I haven't the heart to open Madam Whiskey. Maybe when the first non-white, female is elected president I will open. It is their signature drink with their CIVIC vodka, apple cider, fresh lemon juice, and ginger; it was served hot in a glass cup with a handle. It was delicious! After hearing about DC distilleries in Ivy City and this is one of the few open on Sundays, I decided to check it out. I did the 45 min tour with tasting for $12 and it was totally worth it! This distillery is the first woman owned distillery, started by 2 best friends. They started out with rum, bourbon, vodka, rye, whiskey, and now apple brandy. We got a detailed explanation of the process of how the rye and bourbon get made from whiskey and got to check out the tanks downstairs and barrels upstairs. The tastings were good and you got to keep the glass as a souvenir. Although I didn't particularly like the tastings, the vodka was smoother and didn't have that nailpolish aftertaste. The reason this review falls short of 5 stars is the bartender service. The bartenders (bald fellow) are kind of rude. I couldn't decide between a few cocktails, and asked the bartender on his recommendation. He rudely said "it's between whiskey and vodka", "Yes, I know that" is what I responded with. I was expecting more of his preference for one of the 3 cocktails, not simply to state the facts. VERY RUDE. Really put a sour taste in my mouth. I decided to keep it safe and go with the Moscow Mule. It was okay, had too much ginger and I threw half of it away. I'm torn with this review. I give the distillery and the tour 5 stars, but the service and cocktail 1 star. Won't be back again. Jos a Magnus Distillery had a much better chill vibe. I took my mom here for a distillery tour as part of her birthday activity and it was great. Small and simple, but high quality. The tour is $12 per person, lasts about 30 minutes, includes a tasting of three alcohols, and you get to keep the branded glass as a souvenir. The tour leader was extremely knowledgeable, passionate, and welcoming. There are only a couple rooms, so like I mentioned, it's small and simple, but well run, organized, and makes for a nice afternoon. Republic Restorives has a super cool vibe, is very open air with big windows and has a hip bar. The area is relatively small with seats at the bar and a couple rustic communal tables. It fits right in with the Ivy City vibe with the remodeled warehouse and young, hipster atmosphere, including the bartenders who seem most interested and intent on mixing drinks over providing friendly interaction with customers. They have a succinct bar menu incorporating the local liquors and fresh ingredients. All the drinks I've tried are refreshing and delicious with beautiful garnishes and presentation. They have 5-6 vodka options (I recommend the punch or Moscow Mule) and 5-6 bourbon drinks. 2) Space: It's in the heart of Ivy City and their space fits the industrial ambiance of the neighborhood well. Their main area is decorated with barrels to sit on and old school file cabinets and hanging greens from the walls. The mayor of DC had her birthday part here and you can tell why the moment you walk in. Just do an Instagram search and you'll see countless photos pop up that speak to its wonder. 3) Staff: They are friendly, knowledgeable, and fun people. As a budding brown liquor drinker, I started to explore local distilleries in the area and Republic Restoratives Distillery was highly recommended. A woman owned company on NY Ave, next to the Hecht Warehouse stores. I did a tour of their facilities, with the tour guide giving you an overview of what they make (a vodka, rye whiskey, bourbon, and Apple brandy), the process in making their liquors and a tasting of each at the end. You get to take home a glass and you get a discount off of a purchase (check the terms and conditions because I can't remember the amount/percentage). The drinks are good and it's a chill atmosphere in the bar area. You should check it out and support local businesses. read more

Came here with friends and I am currently planning my next trip from my far off land of NOVA! The Moscow Mule is amazing! The glasses are large (think large hot coffee) and had such a great, fresh flavor. Stay at the bar and watch them make it for a show. The candied ginger garnish is the perfect finishing touch and helps with booze breath. Also had a sampler platter of buns after two Mules (and boy did I need them!). The buns themselves were pillowy, soft, and almost melted in my mouth. Yum! The contents differed between the three. One had mushrooms and cheese. Really nice place in the middle of a bunch of other distilleries. While in theory they could make a 'distillery trail', the reality is one visit to any of them is all you need! The tasting room is small but cozy. They also do tours, although I missed on that. I was in luck, because they had just released their bourbon. A super-cool server named John took care of a friend & I. As with many distilleries, they primarily serve mixed drinks, although they also will serve something straight. I tried the Fitzgerald (lemon bitters with their gin) while a friend had their Manhattan (which I'm sure would have done Dad proud). This place is the bees knees (pun intended). We first found Civic Vodka at a liquor store in SE DC, then again at a better value at Costco in NE DC. Yes, the spirits are more expensive that conventional counterparts, but this place deserves every extra dollar. The staff is very accommodating and kind. We tried almost all of their cocktails: Moscow Mule, Bees Knees, Italian Debutante, January Summertime, American Trilogy and Its Complicated. All were expertly crafted, and the mule even comes with candied ginger. All cocktails were $12. We were going to try to do the tour, but ended up getting delayed so we couldn't try it. We were told over the phone that it was $48/couple, but saw in the Yelp reviews it was historically $12/person, so maybe there was some miscommunication, or perhaps prices increased due to demand. Two parts were a bit odd for us: 1. the cocktails were mixed from beakers on the bar. Seemed non-traditional, but I would have preferred to see what was going into the drinks. 2. Plastic straws (in DC) especially when they weren't needed. Anyway, the place is very clean (including the bathroom), and has a unique industrial modern feel. I've been to Republic Restoratives a few times (not for a tour, yet!), and I've enjoyed my experience every time. The bartenders definitely know what they are doing. The cocktails are $12 each, and are very much worth the price. I got the Ward, a bourbon drink, and then another drink that was made with the brandy that was kind of like an old fashioned. The seating is fairly limited, but the decor is super cute. I particularly enjoyed the hanging plants and the flowers that were in, what looked like, an erlenmeyer flask. I have been to this place twice and have had a pleasant time each time! I really enjoy their drink Chin Chin and I think they have another one called the Monte Carlo??? The tour is about an hour long and you are able to sample some of the liquor the tour touches upon and it it just an amazing tour. The distillery tour is great and an awesome value for $12. I had a voucher from Gilt City, which was easy to redeem. The tour is short, simple and offers insight into how the distillery creates its own spirits. We had a tasting of vodka, rye, bourbon and new apple brandy. Each spirit had various tasting notes and complex flavor profiles, but they are a good in-between for those who do not normally drink vodka or bourbon and those who appreciate higher-end alcohol. I ended up purchasing a bottle of the bourbon since it was so good (the bourbon is $49 without tax and the rye is $79). The staff are incredibly nice and knowledgeable about making their own spirits in house. Overall, this is an awesome local find. My only complaint is that the distillery is a bit far from everything else in D.C., however, it's worth the trek. The bartenders know how to make great drinks, and it feels great to support a local business. Come here and spend a few hours--you won't regret it. read more

My friend invited me to an event here recently, and it was really nice. Violinist Chelsea Green performed that night, then opened up discussion at the end of her performance. This was very chill type of experience that I would hope to enjoy again soon. After the session, we were shown into the main area with a bar and several food stations. Nice touch, guys. Nice space,very modern, very hip. The bar was stocked with a nice variety of liquors that are brewed in-house. We tried several bourbon and whiskey drinks that scored perfect 10s. One bartender, no name to give, was exceptionally friendly and knew how to mix a drink. The other dude, a Jamaican bro, was the antithesis of the other: arrogant and pissy. We came in kind of late on a Sunday, maybe 2 hours before closing. They were pretty busy. There were two servers behind the bar. The atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable. We sat at the bar. I didn't immediately feel welcomed. Perhaps the servers were overwhelmed and busy? I'm not sure. But it's the only reason I took a star away. I find that good service can outshine mediocre food or drinks. And while the drinks were amazing, the service was lackluster. I'll definitely give them another shot, maybe earlier in the day on another weekend. I did end up buying a bottle of house bourbon that me and my SO really enjoyed. Hopefully my next experience is better and I can give this spot the 5 stars I believe it deserves. read more

I finally caught this place without a huge crowd, so we decided to grab a cocktail. The front room is really pretty and I love the large windows. Even though there were only a few other people, the staff were really slow and seemed irritated for some reason. They even skipped over us and took two other groups' orders before ours. $12 informative distillery tour and a great craft cocktail in the tasting room. I visited Republic Restorative today with my wife. We went on the distillery tour which included a tasting of Civic Vodka, Rodham Rye, Borough Bourbon, and Chapman Apple Brandy. The Civic is an extremely good vodka. It's as near fully neutral as any vodka I've ever had. Rodham Rye is an extremely approachable rye whiskey that finishes with bourbon notes (attributable to the high corn mash bill). Borough Bourbon was not my favorite (batch 2). It was a bit more bitter than I prefer. Chapman Apple Brandy was excellent. Beyond the Apple notes, I got pear and marshmallow out of the spirit. Our tour guide was quite knowledgeable and told us the story of the distillery as we navigated from the production floor downstairs to the barrel room upstairs. There's a great narrative that accompanies the great spirits that definitely makes a visit worthwhile. After the tour, we sat in the tasting room/bar and enjoyed a Jack Rose cocktail. It was a hard decision between the Chapman and the Rodham, but we walked away with the Rodham Rye. Ivy City is lucky to have Republic Restorative. read more

This place is still pretty new so I'll have to come back for bourbon. I'm excited that it's woman owned and all women were behind the bar. The drinks were pretty but not my favorite. I was also intrigued by the logo. They're using ASL (the letter R) but I'm not sure how involved they are with the Deaf community as it wasn't brought up on the tour. Loved that this establishment is woman owned. The space is incredibly light and airy and the design is a really nice homage to the bourbon they sell. I would've loved more seating. There is a lot of open space to stick more chairs and barrel tables, the concrete can be a bit hard to linger on. People rotated out quick enough so it wasn't too too bad of a wait. My mule came in a high ball and was made with ginger syrup and club soda. The ginger was a little too spicy for me but a great drink nonetheless. My boyfriend tried the old fashioned, the prep and presentation were great on the drink. Even tasted a bit sweeter (which we liked) than a traditional old fashioned. Will definitely return to try more, and for a tour! You get a cute glass of your own to keep. Great way to perpetuate the brand. read more

The tour included tastes of their four spirits- vodka, rye, bourbon, and apple brandy- as well as the small commemorative glass that was used for tasting. Our tour guide was very informative and engaging- I liked how he asked everyone what notes they tasted in the different spirits, and I learned a lot about how the spirits are made and how Republic Restoratives in particular decides which spirits to produce. It seemed like there was something for everyone, whether you knew a lot about spirits or nothing at all. The spirits themselves are extremely high-quality as well, and the vodka in particular was one of the smoothest I've ever tasted. We also stayed for cocktails, which were all great! read more

Pia and Rachel (owners) and all of the staff are absolutely wonderful and take great pride in their company, products and space. Woman owned relatively new distillery that is worth a visit. Civic vodka is the primary spirit available. Clean and fresh. They are also working on a bourbon-styled whiskey - according to the tour guide - that is the true love of the distillers. That is also on sale, but realize they purchased the whiskey mash elsewhere. All spirits are made with local corn and other local ingredients. The tasting room is modern and slick. The bartender knowledgeable, friendly and interesting. Did I mention that all the cocktails are made with fresh, local ingredients? I had visited Republic Restoratives months ago, only to find they were closed for a private event, but was let in anyway by one of the owners to sample and see for myself.
