Mark is so awesome!! He was able to make my idea into a reality. He's really easy to work with and truly just loves what he's doing and sharing that skill with people. Marc and his team at Soul Performance are not your average "gone surfing" surf shop. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to Marc when I crushed the rail of my 9'3 Walden Magic Model after dropping it onto concrete 5 days before my first surf trip to O'ahu. This was the board I had been training on.. That I had spiritually and mentally prepared myself to lug around the island with me.. it was going to be my my turquoise chariot carrying me across the waves of my dreams So to hear that crack when it accidentally slipped out of my overworked hands onto the concrete made my stomach drop and my eyes water. The rail damage was far beyond my amateurish level of solar resin repair skills so I raced around the SouthBay trying to find some someone who could help me with fast surfboard repair. That's when a friend gave me Marc's contact info and assured me that Soul Performace was my only hope. Within minutes Marc got back to me, set out a time frame, a more than reasonable rate, and a calming energy that let me know that all would be well with my board. He even assured me that I could pick my board up the evening before my midday flight so that I wouldn't be a stress ball day of. This place is not your average surf shop. They are all about the experience. Mark, the owner has to be one of the kindest, humans we've ever met. He is genuinely passionate about not just creating surf boards but also cultivating community. He and another gentleman in the shop walked us through how surf boards are made, the different types of boards based on individual skill level and preference, he answered all of our questions and eventually we left with the perfect board. I was originally in the Redondo Beach area to look at used surf boards at ET Surf shop. Although their stock of used boards were impressive, I wasn't able to find anything that suited my tastes and needs. Since I was already in the beach area, I decided to hop onto Yelp and look for nearby surf shops. The shop on top of the list was Soul Performance. It already had a great rating, and it was only a few minutes away, so I decided to stop by. When I entered the store, Mark, the owner, showed me some of the boards he had in the store. He didn't have too many used boards, so he advised me that Craigslist/eBay would be my best bet. After telling me that, he told me that he also fixes boards and would give me a decent deal on repairs. A few weeks later, I found a board and e-mailed Mark inquiring about repair prices. He got back to me within the same day, and advised me to stop by on the weekend so he can asses the damages in person. The board I brought had extensive damages on the nose, tail, and on one of the rails - not to mention there were numerous dings on the board. He counted up all the damages, gave me a discount, and priced the damages at around $180. I had already spent $200 on my board, and I thought a total $380 was a fair price to pay for a vintage Surf Hawaii board. (I'll upload a before and after picture of the damages and repairs, so you can make your own assessment.) I think this is a great store. Mark is very personable, attentive, listens to your needs, and I'm all for supporting a local business. Not to mention, when I picked up my board, I met surfing legend Jay Adams! read more

Good repair at a reasonable price. I bought this board used and when I dinged it 2 times after 3 rides I was pretty bummed. I took it to Brog because he was the original shaper and I'm really glad I did. He first made sure to get the alignment for the glass on fin I knocked absolutely perfect, then he made sure to smooth out the ding on the rail so it was completely indistinguishable from the rest of the rail other than the slight colour difference. The board rides like new for a super fair price, I'm pretty stoked on all the work he did. The turn around was about 12 days which was pretty reasonable I thought. Can't recommend Brog enough. Sent 2 of my buddies there for repairs. read more

I have passed this surf shop 100+ on my way to the beach during the 'dawn patrol' hours so this shop has always been closed. Well I finally passed this shop in the afternoon and was pretty stoked to see it open and knew I Had to stop and so glad I did. Soul Performance is located in the downtown portion of Redondo Beach and is located right next to the Redondo Beach Post Office. If you are reading this review and looking for Soul Performance look for the business with the surfing stickers on their front window. I walked into this shop for the first time and met Mark who is the owner / operator / surfboard shaper. I got to speaking to Mark and found him to be a truly genuine surfer / skater who truly is living the dream. Before I knew it Mark and I who were total strangers only minutes ago were now rapping about skating & surfing and the importance of the vibe / right mindset behind it all. Mark took me on a tour of Soul Performance and I was quite impressed. Soul Performance sells everything from skateboards, to trucks, to wheels, to surfboards (hand shaped on site by Mark), to SUP paddle boards, to safety equipment for skating & you can even build your own scooter from scratch (all parts available at Soul Performance from the ground up). Of course you can also find hats, various clothing, surfboard wax and various cool little stickers that are unique to surf shops. I really dug the vibe of this spot. I really dug Mark's energy and I really dig seeing an independent surf shop operating in the world of big franchises that have popped up what seems like everywhere. To me surfing is about the vibe and riding a board that was popped out of a machine takes away energy from that board. The boards that are hand shaped to me are much different. You share a connection with the shaper and the energy that he or she put into making that board and you take a piece of that with you every time you step into the liquid. We asked for Mark to do the impossible, take a thoroughly thrashed board best fit for a dumpster and bring it back to life. But that wasn't just it, we asked him to do in next to no time at all. See, the board belonged to a recently departed loved one and we had all but lost hope that we could get it renovated in time for his memorial paddle out. That was, until we met Mark. Mark did not know us, he did not owe us a thing, yet he took on this project like it was his own. He charged us a ridiculously reasonable rate all the while he attacked the project like a damn banshee. He is good man, a better shaper, and we will long owe him for the gift he has given us. I had a great experience we going to Soul Performance. I emailed them before hand to ask if I could come in for an estimate of how much it would cost to get my used surfboard repair. When I came in Mark looked over my board and told me that it was possible for me to do it myself. He was able to give me advice on the repair and I was able to purchase a kit that would have everything I need to repair my board in it. This shop is awesome. But what makes it so great isn't it's perfect location. It's not the great selection of boards, accessories, and everything you can find there. It's not the competitive pricing. Plainly put its the owner Mark. This guy is a down to earth honest guy living the life we're all secretly jealous of. He loves what he does and is good at it. That's the reason you can walk in as an inexperienced customer and not only feel comfortable asking questions but instead feel as though you've know mark and have been shopping here for years after spending 15 minutes talking to him. I went to another shop needing new wheels and ended up buying a whole new longboard set up, which I don't regret, but I still needed new wheels for my current t board. I explained my situation and my thoughts on what I was needing and he filled in the gaps with thorough explanations of trade offs of each aspect of wheels. Center vs offset, wide vs narrow, soft vs hard, so on and so forth. We BSed for a bit and I was on my way with new wheels, bearings, and spacers. I mounted the wheels up and it was an instant milestone in working towards the perfect set up. The wheels made a vast difference. So of course I went back a few days later. This time I just had to get the extra set of bearings I left laying on the counter. But again found myself BSing with Mark. He not only remembered me but remembered irrelevant info such as what I did for a living I mentioned last time. There's days I don't even know what I do for a living. He really pays attention to his customers. So this time we talk trucks, he explains the design differences between the most popular trucks and describes how this translates to how they ride and scenarios where each excels. So even though I had no intention of buying trucks, I now knew enough to feel well enough prepared to try a set of new trucks to see this difference for myself. For the beginner to intermediate girl surfer in her 30's, a trip to the local surf shop to make a significant purchase can cause some anxiety and nervousness. Well, my friends, I am happy to report that those days are over. Just saunter over to Soul Performance in Redondo and ask for Mark, the gracious and knowledgeable proprietor and shaper. Wanting to support a local shaper, I went to Mark. Of the many things that endeared me to Mark was the fact that he takes into consideration a women's wingspan when designing the shape of the board so that she will be able to comfortably carry it under her arm, rather than lugging it awkwardly using a hip or her head. Customizing a board requires one to make decisions about shape, size, number of fins, colors, matte or polish. Most importantly, a shaper should ask you about your surfing style (no, just standing up is not a style.) Be prepared to talk about where you like to go; wave height comfort; etc. Finally, Mark asked me to choose three adjectives to describe the board I wanted. After some thought, I selected the following: playful, responsive, and stable. If you have the patience to wait, then a custom board is for you. It's not that much more expensive than buying off the rack and the experience of getting to know, and support, your local shaper is priceless. I wanted to take a lesson on how to surf but didn't know where to start. I gave an experienced surfer a list of 5 shops / instructors for opinions, he singled out Soul Performance as his choice. By the end of today's lesson, I was very impressed. Mark gave me a ride in his surfing mobile to the beach - we got changed and Mark went into detail on the mechanics of wave and how to navigate them with efficiency and grace. I have very limited experience in ocean swimming, but Mark's instructions were clear and concise. He would demonstrate the steps it takes to go past the waves like the pros then encourage me to do the same. Before I knew, we were floating in calmer water. We took the current back to the beach and did it over again. This time it went better, but my endurance was dropping so we focused on practicing the techniques he taught me earlier instead of going further with board techniques. Mark is a great instructor, for his instructions are easy to follow, and his way of teaching erased alot of my fears about the ocean (today we have heavier swells due to a storm to the south of here, but good instruction turned what could be a impossible task into a relatively easy one), and his ability to spot my areas of improvements gave me ideas on what I need to practice to progress at surfing. I am now able to practice on my own and get more experience, before going back to Mark for more expert pointers! read more

The shop itself doesn't have the hugest selection of clothing, but for surfboards and skateboards...great selection of everything. Great place to take your board in for any ding repairs and they usually work pretty fast. I took a board in for repairs and was quoted a week, they were done in 5 days. I had a pretty bad divot in my surfboard that I had just purchased. Another board's fin left a pretty good size hole in the nose.
