15-Aug-2024 I took my soon-to-be 5 yr old to Soul Grind because he wanted a skate board for his 6th birthday in a few days. When we arrived Olivia was super inviting and nice. We learned about Soul Grind and were told all of our options since this was our first time buying a skateboard. We have zero experience. Like, nobody in our family has ever ridden a skateboard prior to our visit to this store. The shop is small but has everything any skateboard enthusiast needs. I learned that most skateboard shops are really clothes and accessories retail stores with a spatter of actual skate boards. Soul Grind has exactly what they advertise...Skateboards. With Olivia's help, and with much attention to detail, we chose a beautiful black board with red wheels. I took my son here to build a skate board for his birthday. He already had a deck but needed everything else. The women here are phenomenal and helpful putting his skateboard together. They made it easy showing him what his options were. He was so happy with his board and of course had to ride it out! A cool thing is that if you buy the hardware there, you can go back to have them tighten everything if you don't have tools at home. I just bought my 3rd and 4th boards specifically from Soul Grind - over the past 4 years I've bought from them 1 Sector Nine, 2 Arbors, and 1 Swell board now. I went from a returning customer to an exclusive customer with this last visit, simply due to the obsession they have with the best customer experience possible. First board I bought from them 4 years ago was my first board ever. I came in as a newbie rider looking for tips. They were so welcoming, telling me about everything I needed to know. When the time came and I picked my board they even customized the grip tape for me from back to clear to show off the wood. I returned last year looking for a larger board as my skills had increased since my last visit. As a more experienced rider coming in now, I was so appreciated for their selection of high quality items from brands that skaters actually use and enjoy. They aren't just stocking up some big box options and going for the sell. They really stand behind every single thing in there and make sure that you are fully satisfied with your purchase. My personal favorites are Arbors. They have a great selection, I picked a Zeppelin for my second board and was on my way. This weekend my buddy was in town and we wanted to all ride. I needed a few new boards so we all went in to pick some out from the best spot I know - Soul Grind. I ended up buying a new Arbor, along with a swell board, and my buddy got a sector nine. We went on a ride that day and the boards were fantastic, unfortunately I must have gone over some glass and my wheels were beyond chipped. I called them up not expecting much, but they immediately told me to come back whenever I could and that they would take care of me, no problem. Went in this morning to have things fixed and within 5 minutes I walked out with fresh wheels - I was expecting maybe at most 2 replacements, if not having to buy all of them. Instead, they replaced all of my wheels in the set. I could not be happier with this level of customer service, and wanted to buy another set just out of gratitude! The selection is sufficient to find a board for most person's needs. Chris, was working that day. Is knowledgable and courteous. He answered all questions we asked. I purchased a basic cruiser board elsewhere and was having an incredible time. I forgot how fun riding a skateboard is. Anyways, I quickly realized I needed an upgrade from these basic and slow bearings. I was riding home on a random day and stopped by here. Whoever helped me out was awesome and so helpful and I got the upgrade for like $20. The shop itself is very organized and super cool. In about a month the excitement of the skateboard is either going to wear off or I will want a major upgrade. Great experience! Our 8 year old has been saving up for a skateboard and I found this shop online while in town for a beach getaway. We first went to a shop in Coronado and they acted like they couldn't be bothered to help us. I love homegrown shops, and this family-run shop is top notch. Father and daughter were working the shop together and their knowledge proved helpful to my newbie son buying his first board. They gave a number of options and it never felt like they wanted to upsell unnecessarily. I loved that while we were waiting for the board to be built, two young regulars came in to ask for intern work while they were free for the summer. They were welcomed and given a quick schedule so they could return during the week. We look forward to going back and checking in on them when we return for a visit. I love supporting local businesses where the owners are actually the ones behind the desk! After buying two new boards, she gave my son a free t-shirt and some stickers--- he was stoked! Our son asked for a "rainbow" skateboard for Christmas. Neither my husband or I skate and finding a small enough board that was rainbow turned out to be pretty difficult online. So we came to Soul Grind. The woman working there (the owners daughter I believe) was incredibly helpful. She showed us many options but was never pushy about anything. She even switched the wheels on the board we picked to pink (our sons favorite color). Our son just opened his present this morning and he thinks it's perfect. Small shop but pretty big selection. I went in to buy myself some speed rings and bearings. Good price and good customer service. I was helped by a young man with blond hair (forgot to catch his name) who was very helpful and friendly. I called ahead of going into the store with questions about inventory and I believe the same guy was on the phone. He was very helpful and knowledgeable on the phone and in person. I will definitely be coming back when I have skating needs in the future. The owner was there and had no problems with another customer couple who brought in two dogs with them, so I'm assuming it's a dog-friendly shop, which is always a bonus. read more

There isnt a no - stars option. I came here to build a new skateboard. The girl there, a shorter gal with black hair seemed like she worked there - I'm pretty sure she did because my friend bought a blank and she is the one who handled the register. After I had the deck I wanted, I walked over to the place where the trucks, wheels, etc. were - behind a partition, with this girl running the station. With her, behind the counter, was her pal- some chick who didnt help me at all, so I assume she didnt work there. I asked the girl who "worked" there about some wheels and she put some on the table and acted like she had something better to do. She went back to yapping with her friend. Then I asked about risers and she showed me one kind that didnt fit the board. She didn't offer to look for others, or anything like that. Instead she went back to talking with her friend. Obviously she had something better to do than her job. I had something better to do - so I left, and they missed a sale. I made the mistake once and will not return. read more

Soul Grind Rules. I had never skated before in my life but living in PB I felt that I needed to learn. I rolled into Soul Grind and was given some really good information. Being a Buyer by profession, I decided to check out the competition hunting for additional professional opinions and of course the best price. I basically came crawling back to this place. Of the few other shops I visited, mostly in North County, I found none of them to be as knowledgeable and all around as nice as Soul Grind. I bought three boards from them. Like KD said. Some people expect rocket science to be more important than riding a skateboard and will argue about tolerances down to 1000/th of an inch about a bearing spacer or some hardware interface even though they are a mediocre skater or much less. Both pro's and amateurs who know what they like will walk away from this shop happy. The wanna be's and the ones who skate better on video games won't like this place. I love soul grind. I'm from Eugene Oregon but I came to San Diego for vacation, the people here are super nice obviously love there job. I saw the owner who helped me skating past me later that day. I was looking for a sector 9 sidewinder series board and they helped me pick the one that was right for me they even lets ride a few test border around the area. If you don't know this already soul grind is the sector 9 retail store so the majority of the birds are sector 9 but the also have a nice selection of other brands like landyhatz and arbor. You can rent a board for like 7$ an hour and take it over to the board walk really fun please go check them out if your near read more

Came in to get some pivot cups replaced on my longboard but decided to get some new truck screws as well (old ones were getting rusted). Jen replaced the washers on my bushings so they would fit appropriately (had to get some venom barrel/cone combo elsewhere unfortunately), installed the new pivot cups, and put my board back together good as new. This place is 3 blocks from my house, so it's great for me. I love the fact that this is a true local business and they source as much of their products locally as they can.
