Average Italian fare. Had the special, came with chips...just like in Rome. Meat was slightly over cooked but generally not bad

After what felt like an incredibly long day at work I thought I would treat myself to a slice of…read morepizza at this New York style deli that only opened its doors earlier this month from the ambitious owner of Capology. I had high hopes this would revitalise me on a Friday evening and satisfy my taste buds and I was absolutely right! Manny's is ideally located on a side street off Northumberland street making it very convenient for shoppers, students or city centre workers alike. There were 4 different pizza's on display on my arrival which were explained to me by a very friendly lady behind the counter however there are many more options on the menu. They had meat options, vegetarian slices and even a white pizza (for those who are unaware this is pizza without the tomato sauce) so all in all a good selection. I opted for the prosciutto and rocket slice which was delicious....lovely thin base and beautiful combination of flavours! I chose to sit in the window which meant I could people watch which is always fun but you can also take out or have your pizza delivered which is great! I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't see any of the desserts on offer in the counter although possibly a blessing for my waistline. There is also supposedly a Man Vs Food challenge which could be interesting. I will definitely be back to try something else!

I can't comment on the location or atmosphere here as I ordered take out, but what I can say is…read morethat these pizzas are something else! Definately felt like a real New York style pizza and it was very good! I would definately eat from here again as it's great to share with friends because it's so ginormous! My only complaint is that they forgot to put the milkshake I ordered into the delivery.

Mamma Mia Pizzeria - store front

Pretty much, this place gets the three stars because it is cheap and fast. A bit of wisdom from my…read morebrother goes something like this: a) Cheap b) Fast c) Good Pick two. Certainly, this restaurant was cheap and fast, and was lacking a bit in the "good" category. I visited Mamma Mia on a Saturday night. Starting at 5:30 PM on Saturdays (and the other days of the week) and lasting until 7 PM is the pizza/pasta/risotto/omelet happy hour. Every pizza/pasta/risotto/omelet on the menu is £4.10. Add a cup of tea, and you have a meal for under £5, which is exactly what I did. The pepperoni pizza was quite good. With ham and pepperoni, it tasted quite different from other pepperoni pizzas I've had. The ham was the predominant flavor, but it was good. Unlike pizzas in the States, the pizza was oval-shaped and quite spicy. The red hot peppers seed that are next to the parmesan cheese is optional in American Pizzerias--but here it came on straight from the kitchen. The crust was buttery, with a very similar taste to Pillsbury roll out crusts, but the consistency was much closer to a NY style pizza than a roll out. They serve more expensive things here too, like steaks and seafood. There are wines and beer as well. The location of the restaurant is a little precarious. Pudding Chare is a glorified ally off of Groat Market. Here's a tip, if you can't find something you want there or it's too crowded, there are three/four other Italian restaurants within a one-minute walk. The interior had a nice feel to it. Not overly fancy, but a nice casual dining establishment. The dining room is very cramped (pictures on their website show the dining room). So, you may want to call ahead during the summer months. If you are looking for a place to eat, Mamma Mia has a decent Italian cuisine at a reasonable price.

Ooft I thought I was in heaven when I found this place!…read more It's a normal Italian restaurant, but they specialise in vegan food. This is very unusual - usually in Italian places you can get a salad and maybe a risotto if it's not already been pre-prepared with butter and cream, and that's your lot, so I can't tell you how happy I was to be here. They have a seperate 'green' menu which is all vegan - even the name of it is a nice touch. It's comprehensive too - the night we visited, there was a choice of 5 starters, 4 mains, and 3 desserts. They are also happy to try to customise anything you fancy from the main menu - which also means that everything is being freshly prepared, and not pre-prepared like you get in a lot of Italian chain restaurants nowadays. For starter, I had creamy mushroom and walnut pate with toasted rustic bread and cranberry sauce. It freaked me out a bit for the first mouthful as it tasted very much like real pate! But I quickly got my head round the the fact that this wasn't meat and was just amazingly delicious and really enjoyed it. I'm pretty sure you could give this to anyone and they wouldn't realise it wasn't meat based. It was that good. For main I had the Italiano Pizza - thin and crispy with napoli sauce, marinated artichoke, caramelised red onions and fresh rocket. Oh man, this pizza! This was an amazing pizza! I have no idea what the chef puts in the base, but it was outstandingly tasty. They've found a really good vegan cheese too. And they were so considerate throughout. When the waitress brought my starter she pointed out that the butter was OK for me. This is very reassuring as even in vegetarian places, sometimes they'll put down dairy butter when you've already said that you're vegan. And for the pizza, she brought over some sort of parmesany type vegan cheese. They also have vegan wine! The lovely woman who was running the place that night gave us a taster of the red and it was really good. I have no idea what my omni partner ate - I was too focussed on my awesome food. We shared a sticky toffee pudding for desert as we were both properly full. This is the one area that maybe needs a wee bit more perfecting - it tasted a bit too much of bicarbonate of soda - you know that bitter taste, and we didn't finish it. Vegan desserts are notoriously difficult to master, but the chef here seems to really be making a huge effort so I'm sure he'll get there with the desserts. I've heard that the chocolate brownie is really good, so I'd probably have that next time. The ice cream was good too. I loved this place. It's not super posh or classy, it's down to earth, the staff are really friendly and helpful, the food is great food, and the chef should be awarded with some sort of 'services to vegan' medal. Keep it up Mamma Mia!
