Portofino - Apple and plum crumble!

Portofino

There is no doubt Portofino's is a stunning and beautiful restaurant and the food is delicious and…read morethe service is great and cost is reasonable but and I know that its quite a long restaurant and there's nowhere for the staff to roam around but to stand nearby opposite diners and watch them eat is quite uncomfortable and off-putting, for me anyway. Also I noticed that as the queue was beginning to grow, I was getting 'the look' and felt a bit pressured to give up my table which was fine as I was preparing to leave but I didn't appreciate the pressure. But I cant take away from the exceptional food and the building and decor is stunning and for that I would recommend Portofino's to others visiting Newcastle.

Cannot believe I have only just discovered this place! I went here with the girls last night as we…read morewere looking for somewhere cheap and cheerful seeing as it's not quite pay day and we had heard of the happy hour menu offering 2 courses for £8.95. I wasn't expecting such high quality and delicious food at the same time so I was pleasantly surprised! What a beautiful building inside-the roof is quite spectacular and makes this relatively small restaurant radiate grandness! The service was spot on too-very attentive staff who went the extra mile when they had run out of one of the options on their 'sweet of the day' happy hour menu and let us replace it with any other dessert for the same price! My only gripe would be there is nowhere to wait if your table isn't ready and so you end up huddled in the doorway. My friends ordered pasta dishes and I've never seen one of my friends actually finish every mouthful on her plate which was a good sign! I ordered the Pollo di Pancetta which was beautifully cooked with a lovely selection of vegetables. The red wine sauce for me was quite subtle and not as thick as I would have liked but certainly didn't take the shine off the superb quality of the food. For dessert all three of us opted for one of the cheesecakes. All I can say is......wow! I highly recommend this restaurant and wouldn't be deterred from eating here outside of happy hour neither as I think the quality is worth paying for! That said...what an ideal destination for food straight after work!

Stopped in for lunch on a Sunday, but didn't fancy a traditional Sunday lunch.  The weather was…read moregood, so we sat outside on the patio to people-watch.  It's a lovely spot, lively and scenic in the heart of the Quayside. The menu was full of Italian standards, and seemed fairly inexpensive.  I really had no expectations as I'd heard nothing about Uno's before, and the whole family was pleasantly surprised by how good our lunches were.  We started with whitebait and calamari - I didn't taste the calamari, but the whitebait were piping hot and perfectly crisp.  Even my 20-month old loved them, to my great surprise!  The calamari came with the Sunday lunch - only £14.95 for three courses, and my mother-in-law thought the sea bass (Chef's "fish of the day" option on the Sunday deal) was absolutely gorgeous, and it came served with bright vegetables.  My husband and I shared a lovely Rustica pizza (£9.95) with a crisp crust, juicy tomatoes, lots of parma ham, Parmesan shavings, and rocket.  Even better was the spaghetti meatballs - not an enormous portion of pasta, but the meatballs were abundant!  For £9.95 you really get your money's worth in the meat department, but more pasta would've been nice!  However, the meatballs were truly a cut above.  They really reminded me of...well... meatballs that I would cook.  You could see inside them the onion, spinach, herbs - they were not uniform, hard balls - they were hand-formed and full of different ingredients besides meat, and they were soft and delicious.  The toddler really enjoyed them too! Desserts - sticky toffee pudding and tiramisu - were just fine.  Classic and well-presented, but not staggering. Everyone enjoyed their meal, even those who are normally quite hard to please, and we all felt it was a little unassuming gem of a place.  Would absolutely come back next time we are craving Italian!
