Yesterday I had a Carnosa, cooked to perfection as always, generous to the edge toppings with a completely authentic Italian taste. The glass of house red was delicious, the service as ever, attentive and polite. Families are always welcome, but single diners are just as valued. This would be a lovely restaurant in which to introduce children to dining out properly - formal enough to feel special, friendly so that children will relax. I never ever eat anywhere else when I visit Newcastle for shopping. Why would I want to go somewhere that could only be second-best to this. The negative review here must have been the work of a malicious rival. Either that or he/she was in a different restaurant.

There were plenty. I had to ask for a finger bowl. There were four dead ones... Plus a few where the shells were in splinters. The only time I've encountered this is when the they placed in their sauce and then put in a microwave straight from a fridge. The owner said they wouldn't do that and got a single mussel in the kitchen and placed it in the microwave,...no splintered shell. However, I said it had to be in the sauce. I'm not sure she was convinced, and neither was I. The sauce was very nice, but marred by the splinters of shell. A good selection of wine. I had the Pinot Grigio - 175ml (£4.65) with the mussels and glass of Shiraz - 250ml (£5.95) with my steak. Also, had a bottle of Peroni when I first sat down. I did ask how old the steak was and told 21 days and sourced locally. I had the Filletto Pepe (£19.95 with chips), and wished I hadn't had the sauce. There was nothing wrong with the sauce, but as it was said to be 21 days old, I was playing safe. I shouldn't have done, and should have had it just as it was..... It was sublime. So tender and melt in your mouth. The chips were good too.... I was stuffed... Total bill £38.85. Although she put a lower figure into the card machine; I pointed out she was paying herself less.... Soon rectified... :-) I would return if in the area again.

The red wine sauce for me was quite subtle and not as thick as I would have liked but certainly didn't take the shine off the superb quality of the food. The carbonara was outstanding, the garlic bread was just right. The only criticism I have is the asparagus in the salad was soggy. But other than that, outstanding. The menu was full of Italian standards, and seemed fairly inexpensive.  I really had no expectations as I'd heard nothing about Uno's before, and the whole family was pleasantly surprised by how good our lunches were.  We started with whitebait and calamari - I didn't taste the calamari, but the whitebait were piping hot and perfectly crisp.  Even my 20-month old loved them, to my great surprise!  The calamari came with the Sunday lunch - only £14.95 for three courses, and my mother-in-law thought the sea bass (Chef's "fish of the day" option on the Sunday deal) was absolutely gorgeous, and it came served with bright vegetables.  My husband and I shared a lovely Rustica pizza (£9.95) with a crisp crust, juicy tomatoes, lots of parma ham, Parmesan shavings, and rocket.  Even better was the spaghetti meatballs - not an enormous portion of pasta, but the meatballs were abundant!  For £9.95 you really get your money's worth in the meat department, but more pasta would've been nice!  However, the meatballs were truly a cut above.  They really reminded me of...well... meatballs that I would cook.  You could see inside them the onion, spinach, herbs - they were not uniform, hard balls - they were hand-formed and full of different ingredients besides meat, and they were soft and delicious.  The toddler really enjoyed them too! The food is standard, nothing spectacular but for the price it is great value. I would highly recommend the Calzone, although it can be quite heavy. The amaretto cake for dessert is one of my favourites. One of the most disappointing aspects of Santanas is the staff. Some of them are polite and well trained but some our quite rude and comes across aggressive. Another downside of the place are their receipts - still hand scrawled pieces of paper. They can be quite unclear and have had a few indescrepancies in the past and been overcharged. Overall a good place to grab something quick but wouldn't go out of my way to eat here
