Went to Sophia's today for a special occasion (Mother's Day) and ordered the breakfast Monte Carlo. Was very surprise that BOTH pieces of french toast were made from the heel/crust of the bread. Both were very tough to cut, and to chew. Recommend they save these pieces for making bread pudding. It certainly made this meal less than enjoyable. read more

We have been going to Sofia's for years. We hadn't been there in a while until we went last Fall. Dang. They closed! We drove down a road around the corner--yeaaa! They just moved! I took a very picky friend there last week. She loved it too! I always have the Baked Shrimp and Angel Hair Pasta. My family members have other choices, but I love my choice. I wish the service was better. When my husband is not with me (two ladies, my son and me alone), we must ask for bread, then we don't get oil, and don't ask if we would like refills. An absolute must-try salad is the pancetta salad: served with a warm pancetta based vinaigrette. Found Sophia's after a big game because most places around Columbia had 1-2 hour wait times. We were seated right away and got our drinks a few minutes after ordering. They had a constant flow of groups so it didn't seem that they were ending their night anytime soon. Really decent Italian food and nice specials. We had the Horseradish Encrusted Salmon, the Smoked Chicken Pot Pie and the Ravioli Aragosta. If I had to rank them, the Pot Pie was our favorite. The pastry did not overwhelm the meal and loved the large chunks for chicken and veggies. If you are the fence about horseradish, then steer clear. The horseradish overpowers the salmon but it was still a decent meal. The pasta tasted fresh so would like to try their more traditional meals next time. While the food and atmosphere was great, our personal service was dissapointing at best. Me and a gal friend came in for a night out. We had plans for somewhere else so we came in spontaneously, and by some standards possibly under dressed. However none the less we were obviously very nice and came prepared to tip well. Our sever by the name of Kamry spent 80% of our time, at Sophia's, tending tediously to other tables, all the while ignoring our requests for straws, taking extremely long to notice/bring us drink refills, and not once checking in on our food or experience. We also realized at the end of our dine that we were never offered the complimentary table bread that everyone else around us was asked about. Visiting from Austin Texas I have become accustomed to a high standard of food and unfortunately Sophia's was a disappointment. When we walked in I immediately the noticed the strange paintings on the wall which was an interesting and odd choice for decor. I ordered the roasted salad with salmon and it was borderline inedible. The romaine pieces were cooked whole and came out drenched in out and salt. I love salt but it tasted like someone poured a whole salt shaker on the "salad" and then served the wilted leaves with a very small overcooked piece of salmon on top. The new place is not near as nice as the old place and no longer feels like an upscale restaurant but they still have the upscale prices. It's not near as intimate and seems much smaller. Tables are close together so can hear next tables conversations. Quality also seems to be missing as well. Had to ask for bread, wasn't offered Olive oil or ground pepper on salad and portions seemed smaller. It's missing the "WOW" factor. read more

We traveled from St. Louis for a Sunday brunch with our niece that lives in Columbia. Sophia's isn't pretentious, as some of the photos might suggest. It's an open space restaurant, minimalist style dining. Our server was quick to the table and pleasant from the start. He provided adequate time for menu review but also knew to check in at an appropriate pace. He was quick with suggestions and feedback about the salmon horseradish, and empanadas. Of course we decided to start with the frangelica monkey bread and I assumed it would be good just based on its name. I was wrong. ITS SPECTACULAR!!!! A massive amount for only 3 people and we indulged with gluttonous delight!! Great job! The entrees were delicious and this is one of the only places that understands the thin line between crispy and burnt bacon. Crispy to perfection. We ended in the house dessert, forgive my faux pas in the actual name. Layers of chocolatey fudge with mousse and the perfect amount of ganache. Give this place a try! We were under a nice umbrella and it was not too hot or sunny. However, we were in a corner and did not get attended to super often. When our server came by she was very nice and attentive. It can get pretty busy on the weekends. - Asiago spinach dip (3.5/5): pretty small portion of the dip, and only 4 crostinis are included. It was good overall though, very tasty - Spicy chicken sausage pasta (4/5): seasoned well, and love the combination of flavors. Whether breakfast or lunch, Sophias is excellent. It is the sister restaurant to Addisons which I also love. I like to go to addisons for dinner and sophias for brunch. EVERYTHING on their brunch menu is good and while the service is excellent it sometimes takes a few minutes to get seated. The biscuits and gravy are absolutely phenomenal but if with a group please try the frangelico monkey bread. I will say that my group shared the smoke chicken empanadas and they were excellent as well. read more

Started with the caprese.... Was it worth 12.50? No. It was very small. I was expecting bigger tomatoes. Great flavor though. Had the filet Porto (12$) and a side of broccoli (7$) that comes with a delicious Asiago sauce on top. The filet was the perfect size at 4 oz. the blue cheese on top was delicious as well. Terrible from start to finish! I went with my niece because I had seen it on yelp the last time I was in town so we decided to give it a try and boy were we disappointed! We were seated by a gentleman who had us wait for the waitress, which we did but it seemed like she had better things to do with her time other than helping the customers! The menu was lack luster especially when compared to the online menu and pictures! My niece didn't like red sauce land asked it on could be substituted for a alfredo or any available white sauce and she said no they could mix it but that's it! So we ordered and waited with no bread of anything except our drink. When it came out it looked great but one bite in and it was obvious that this was pre made and thrown together when ordered! It was the strangest thing taking a bite with cold and hot! We both had this! So weird! To top it off they were ditch flavorless! After my niece drowned hers in salt she finally asked for parm which was a job in it self! This didn't help the meal either! It was a big waste of $50! Save your time,money and energy! read more

Disappointing. This place is a glorified Olive Garden. I've visited twice and the place is meh. The first time I was there was in July of 2021. Our table ordered crab cakes and spinach artichoke dip as starters. The dip was good, but the dish was all out of proportion. The dip itself was in a small bowl -- about the size of a "cup of soup" bowl --- sitting at the edge of a medium-size platter. The rest of the vast space on the platter was filled with four large pieces of bread, about 20 baby carrots, and about 2 cups of raw broccoli. So, way more items to dip than could be used up with the tiny bowl of dip. The dip was pretty good, but the bread was soggy and unseasoned and the raw vegetables were out of place. The dip was so thick and the dip bowl was so small that you really couldn't dip anything into it. We also ordered the crab cake tapas as a starter. The cakes were under seasoned and you really couldn't taste any crab. They came with a pile of some kind of slaw made with spiralized zucchini and a condiment cup full of a pale yellow creamy dip. I tasted the dip and it was not good. There was so much chopped cilantro that you couldn't taste anything else. I didn't try the slaw, but one of my companions said it was slimy and overpowered by cilantro. I ordered the Smoked Chicken Carbonara and it was pretty good. The portion was way off and I'm sure I had 2.5 to 3 cups of cooked pasta in my pasta bowl. It was easily enough pasta for two people and I was only able to finish maybe one-third of it. That really bothers me. I hate to think how much pasta Sophia's cooks and throws out every day. One of my friends ordered Chicken Mudega and said it was good. Another had the Ravioli Aragosta and was underwhelmed -- she said it was watery and bland. The remaining member of our group ordered the House Cut New York Strip. The steak was small and thin. It didn't have any sear marks and was seriously under seasoned. I gave this place another shot this weekend and things were worse than the first time. My friend and I weren't super hungry, so we decided to get one starter and split an entree. The server brought us bread and poured about 1 tablespoon of olive oil onto a small plate. The bread was unremarkable and the oil was bland. We ordered the Tomato Basil Scallops as a starter, we split an order of Ravioli Buonasera, and we each had dessert. The scallops were inedible. I wish I had taken a picture because it looked so unappetizing. The dish was served on a regular size dinner plate covered with a layer of torn arugula. There were four small bay scallops, each wrapped with a whole slice of thick-cut bacon. The ratio of bacon to scallop was way off and there was so much bacon that it was crispy on the outer part and nearly raw where it was in contact with the scallop. The scallop I ate had the texture of a pencil eraser and no flavor. I wish I had just stopped right then, but I took a forkful of the tomato relish sitting atop the scallops and had to gag to get it down. It tasted like someone had mixed diced tomatoes with white vinegar and basil. So bad! We next split an order of Pasta Buonosera. This restaurant has a great outdoor patio space unfortunately their food is terrible. We had... 1. Gruyere and mushroom - it was served like a dip. Just salty and greasy with subroll type bread that was super thick and doughy and not well toasted 2. Shrimp and brie on toast - toast was soggy and the shrimp and Brie tasted fishy 3. Bacon wrapped scallops - first of all scallops do not need to be wrapped w bacon bc they taste great on their own. This was wrapped in a double layer of bacon and the scallop was overcooked 4. Shrimp with angel hair pasta - what a soggy mess this was. Angel hair was overcooked and broken and covered in a disgusting creamy Alfredo sauce. It was just ewww. I doubt the owners or chef at this restaurant has ever been to Italy bc they wouldn't put out food like this and call it Italian.
