In that context, some would consider it blasphemy to eat in an Italian and French inspired restaurant while being surrounded by one of a kind local Mexican dishes. If that tendency comes to mind, I'd urge resistance to that emotion and giving in to that confusing experience of eating Italian food in a traditional Mexican city. De Gourmand is a paradox. Upon stepping in, there is a mixture of Moorish influences, from the lamps to the walls. There are people who are so nice, it feels like an invitation has been extended to their home. There is a chef so talented, that every creation is a masterpiece. The head chef, Alfredo, is Mexican-Italian, worked in New York and is passionate about every single creation. It did not feel like dishes are being cranked out at rapid speed to satisfy hungry patrons or that the kitchen is in stress. Every dish was carefully crafted to perfection. The lightly smoked hen was spectacular and so was the other poultry dish, the Guinea fowl that has been injected with Chardonnay and allowed to age. The fried provolone was one of the most interesting, yet simple creations. Salmon tartare was fresh and bursting with flavors. All of this wrapped up with a bottle of Casa Madero Mexican blend, created for a meal to remember, to remember forever. The people welcoming and serving the dishes were Carmelo and Jorge, who had an equal degree of passion as the head chef, putting happiness in what they do. Kind gentlemen who, by the end of dinner, felt a lot more like friends than servers at a restaurant. One of the highlights is certainly to grab a seat on the patio upstairs when the weather is not too hot and enjoy a dinner with the ringing of the church bells, the sound of the city and a background tune of 80s Italian classics. Romance is a carefully curated, delicately created emotion that is eminent to appear while enjoying this rooftop.

I imagined the decor and ambiance à la Nico's, with well-trained servers, white tablecloths, and handsome platings. However, my excitement soon turned into dread as I stepped inside the contradicting restaurant. It looked like a typical fonda that tried to be a sit-down eating establishment: a simplistic, almost non-existent decor, faux-leather tablecloths, and what I expected to be plain-tasting food served on a plate without any form of inspiration. We ordered with low expectations upon seeing the seemingly mass-made Pan Dulce, which probably came out of the factory-like ovens of Costco. Our food arrived on ordinary plates, but the food actually looked inviting. Handmade tortillas unexpectedly made an appearance along with a tasty looking salsa, and we slowly recuperated our appetite. The stellar dish was the Cecina, Veracruz-style, which was slightly thicker and not as dry as Yecapixtla Cecina, but still packed a ton of flavor and saltiness typical of a slab of cecina. Here you can pair your cecina with nearly everything, be it chilaquiles, scrambled eggs, dobladitas, a variety of enchiladas, or even as tacos. They also have a variety of regional specialties, such as Huastecas, Migadas, and Bocoles. Ultimately, the food makes you forget the decor, and that is a good thing. Either this place is an unconventional stroke of genius with so many instances of juxtaposition taking place, or just a circumstance of people cooking awesome food in a not so awesome restaurant. While I lean towards the latter, I would rather leave it for up for people who have not eaten here to decide for themselves.

My volunteer group decided to go for dinner one night. I was super excited that they had salad on the menu. I was happy to get some vegetables to balance out all the tacos I had eaten, but half the salad was shredded iceberg lettuce. Loved the stuff on the salad, but they could've done a better job balancing. That said, salad was hard to find so I'm still grateful. And it came with a quesadilla on the side! A pretty mediocre one, but nice to have. The restaurant also serves breakfast all day and the omelettes looked delicious. The omelette was huge and had great flavor. It also came with some of the fresh juice and fresh fruit. SIDE NOTE: I watched as other plates were delivered to tables, and everything looked beautiful.
