Our skins blended with the natural color of the dining table, reminding me the beautiful color of brown. Service: The hustle is real and nothing can be more true, than the quickness of their service. English, not an issue. Food: For this trip we ordered the Tomahawk Steak with Truffle fries. Ordered rare... it's freaking huge. The crust on the steak was done to perfection, with the right amount of rest needed on the steak before serving. The steaks was served dramatically, with the server performing the knife dance, carving the blade into the meat into bites sizes piece to be consumed. Drink: While they served a variety of drinks, we stocked with water. Verdict: 4/5. It's great for big parties and great for families. Went here for my wife's birthday. The ambiance gives fancy steakhouse meets club vibe. The staff is very friendly and food is top tier. The cocktails are well made and all of their meat is perfectly cooked. Even though they were playing music (a great playlist) my 4 month old baby was still able to fall asleep. When we called manager he refused to talk to us and just sent the busboy with our ticket. We had an unfortunately disappointing experience here for a family Christmas dinner. We arrived for a 7:30 reservation and were seated around 7:40. We ordered promptly and after probably about 30 min, were told the kitchen was a little backed up but they will work to get our food out soon. Our entrees did not come out until 9:15 and while one of the dishes was hot, the rest of the food was lukewarm at best. We let the staff know and while the waitress was apologetic, she only offered to warm the food back up after it was nearly 9:30pm and we just wanted to leave. At the end of the night, we asked for the check and they tried to accommodate us with free sorbet despite us not even trying to order dessert. While we appreciated the kindness, it was not quite enough for the inconvenience of waiting 1.5hr for food and the food coming out room temp. After asking, they did take some additional $ off the bill but sadly wouldn't recommend this place if you are looking for a nice and high quality family dinner spot. Sonora Prime Grill aims to please. This was one of the best steakhouse experiences I have had. The atmosphere, music, food and drinks were all top-notch. I started off with the grilled octopus with mashed potatoes and the chargrilled oysters. The seafood was so fresh and perfectly cooked, the presentation was lovely. I enjoyed my appetizer with a specialty cocktail. I can't remember the name of the drink but again the presentation was beautiful. For dinner, I ordered the Tomahawk steak with a side of mashed potatoes and spinach. When they brought out the steak they let it finish cooking on a hot plate once they sliced it into smaller pieces. Honestly, I would have preferred if they cooked it in the back but it did add to the overall experience. I finished off the experience with a tiramisu. Again the presentation was amazing. I really enjoyed my experience and didn't have an arm and a leg compared to having this same meal in DC or NYC. Going out to eat is supposed to be fun, especially in a lively place like Playa del Carmen. But our dinner at Sonora Grill didn't go as we hoped, and here's why. First off, the place looks nice inside, and the people who greet you at the door are friendly. The waiters were nice too, remembering our names, which felt good. They had a video menu which was pretty cool, and the drinks looked amazing. The music was good, and watching a bartender make special drinks was neat. The food looked great when it came out, and some dishes were even made right at our table, which was cool to watch. Ending with ice cream was a sweet touch. But, we had some problems that night. It took them too long to give us the menu, and other people who came in after us got theirs first. We were excited to try a burger, but they were out of it, which was confusing because they said they make everything fresh. The salmon we ordered was supposed to come with asparagus, but it didn't, and they didn't tell us until we asked. They offered fries or broccoli instead but should have told us sooner. Waiting for our food took forever, even for simple things like tequila shots. The place wasn't even that busy. My wife ordered a cocktail, but they forgot about it. They didn't charge us, but we still didn't get the drink. They also charged us for a fancy tequila when we wanted something basic. The worst part was the waiter being pushy about tips. He was demanding a 20% tip in an aggressive manner. He tried to pressure us by claiming that he only charged us for two tequilas instead of four. However, we had specifically asked for tequilas in the 200-220 peso range, but he charged us 400 pesos per shot, which ended up costing the same. It felt like he was trying to deceive us while claiming that he had saved us some money. So, even though the restaurant has some cool things going for it, the problems we had with service and waiting times really made the night less enjoyable. When you go out to eat, you want everything to be smooth and fun. If the basics aren't right, it doesn't matter how good the food looks or how fancy the drinks are. It's a shame because Sonora Grill could be a great place if they fixed these issues. read more

The music is just a little hard to take, as an example remix of a classic Sting song....there is a reason it's a classic. Found the staff to be really nice and was rather impressed by their dead cow options. Yes I am a steak person and make no apologies. Keep your impossible burgers to yourself please. One small snafu was one of our orders of "rare" New York strip showed up clearly medium well....it's easy to tell the difference. Mind Blown! The vibe, the music, the food, the wait staff and just all around the service made for one great evening. Enjoying the frontage of the seafront in Mexico, Sonora Grill was a complete stumble upon but checked more than a few boxes for the needs of the masses. We took cabs from the resort to the dead ass end of the strip so we could begin our journey on foot back and forth between the beach and the streets to the resort. We knew what we were in for. Sales of this and that, offers of drugs and so on and so forth. Sticking mostly to the streets we saw all that and then some but had a blast getting through it all. Soon it was time for eats, and we somehow stumbled and landed at Sonora Grill. Lively at 9:30-10 pm was the least I could say, this joint was jumping! Open air, warm AF and just in Playa Del Carmen Mexico screaming lounge! We needed a table for 8 during a pandemic, Sonora is what we hit. Immediately greeted, immediately seated and ushered into the liveliest most happening spot I think we could have found at the moment. A mixology cart that whipped up whatever was on your mind provided drinks. Winning, check! We soon realized it was time to start rolling out the goods, food time! I'll let my pics do the rest. Let's just say we left full AF and everyone was 100% satisfied. About as good as it can get in my personal opinion. Oh man, I love this place. We must have been here at least 3 times during our week long trip. This place is actually part of a chain group and there is another affiliated location more north in the playa called parilla urbana. They make the best spicy margaritas here! The service is also absolutely wonderful as they give you a delicious bean and cheese dip with chips and salsa on the house as well as an after meal sorbet. Wow...this place is amazing. Not only in food quality but also service. My plan was to write my review last night right after dinner so I wouldn't forget every detail but I had the worst food coma I have ever experienced in my life! To the point where I have reservations to other steakhouse in Playa later this week and I'm seriously thinking about canceling them and just eating fruit plates the rest of the week. Now on to my review: Drinks: Amazing. I forgot that the drinks are 2 for one basically. As soon as I finished my old fashioned I was being brought another one. My wife had a kiwi blended drink and they let her try another one as her second drink. They are reasonably priced at about $15 and you get 2. They're wine list is great as well. Appetizers: On our waiter, Ariel Sanchez's recommendation, we ordered the melted provolone dish mixed with grilled onions and tomato. This was like a fancy queso fundido. Great choice that I highly recommend. Main Dish: I had the smaller filet cut which was delicious and very filling. It melted like butter in my mouth. My wife went overboard and ordered the ribeye. I dropped the ball and didn't tell her to pay attention to the weight since they are in grams and not ounces. She had a lot of food left over but she loved it. We both ordered the medium rare and it was cooked to order. Also, if it's too raw the meat is served on a sizzling dish so you can finish cooking it off on the dish. Dessert: We should have quit while we were ahead since we were full but couldn't resist the lava tiramisu. It was delicious. Service: Man I cannot speak highly enough of the service we received. During this pandemic it amazes me how the people that spoil us during our vacations can do so with a smile on their face. This place was no exception. Our waiter Ariel seemed like an old friend. He made some great recommendations and even told us to reach out to him during the rest of our trip so that he could offer and other dining options. His coworkers Max and Karol were excellent as well. We noticed that all of the staff were constantly using antibacterial gel at all times to make sure everyone was safe. Our table was constantly wiped down and cleaned. I even reached out to the General Manager, Pablo Choke, to tell them how excellent his team is. I can deal with terrible tasting food as long as the service is great. In this case the service outshined the food which seems almost impossible to do. That shows you that this place not only focuses on the quality of their food but of their team. I highly recommend this place. With the pandemic closing up a lot of restaurants it is great to see this place thriving and even stepping up all of their precautions to make sure their team and patrons are well take. My first review here in Mexico, yay! I made a reservation at Sonora Grill through Open Table last night for today after seeing their photos and their menu. The restaurant is conveniently located right around the corner from our hotel in Playa del Carmen, and it's definitely walking distance. It's a beautiful plaza that has a ton of street vendors and shops surrounding the restaurant. There's a DJ in house playing the great jams including First Class by Jack Harlow -- didn't think I'd hear that here. We celebrated our anniversary here, and the staff went above and beyond to make our dinner date special. I ordered their tomahawk steak, and they even cut everything in front of me. My partner did their short rib pasta, and the staff grated the cheese in front of us. They also gave us an appetizer on the house which was a thing of chips with a dip of beans and melted cheese. It's probably one of the best I've had so far. We did sparkling water at the table, and we each ordered a drink. I did a Moscow mule, and my partner did their red wine. They did the pour in front of us and allowed us to sample a bit before we commit. The steak was perfect and exactly how I wanted it to be -- medium rare. My only issue was that they sprinkled salt on top of the steak by default without asking if I wanted it or not. Not a deal breaker, I personally think their chef did a great job with the steak as is and the salt wasn't necessary. My meal came with 2 sides, a thing of truffle fries and spinach dunked in butter. I didn't like the spinach as much due to it being in butter, but other than that we were happy and with a full belly. We talked about coming back here again for another dinner but won't be getting the tomahawk because it's too filling and a lot of meat. I highly recommend it to anyone though -- it's definitely an experience you don't want to miss out. At the end, we were ready for our check, and our server Sergio surprised us with dessert (ice cream cake with sparklers coming out) and I also got an extra glass of Moscow Mule on the house. That was the cherry on top as we were already loving every moment here. I'd recommend Sonora Grill to anyone in the area looking for the upscale dining vibes but still affordable, the drinks, service and atmosphere is amazing. read more

There were 5 of us ladies, we ordered various things from the menu and not ONE of us was disappointed! To start with the good...the food is absolutely delicious. They deliver on flavor and servings are generous. We got the brisket tacos and they come to the table and shred/mix the brisket. It comes with corn tortillas to make your tacos. The complimentary chips, salsa and bean dip ate also terrific. The food is a solid 5 stars. The 3 star rating (although I debated on 2-3) was solely for the tourist gimmick traps on alcohol. Our server was friendly and so was his copilot, but he was a con master. He introduced himself with a question of 'who's first time is it in Mexico?' When we said that 1 of the 3 of us were, he then said he would bring her something special (a shot) but that the other 2 who have previously been to Mexico would need to pay for theirs. We obliged.....fast forward to a when we get the bill there are 3 charges for shots that cost $26 each. I speak to both our servers about the interaction at the beginning of our dinning experience and he outright denies that he said anything like that. I explained my self both in English and in Spanish to make sure I was clear. Needless to say I was pretty upset but I figured it would be of no help to ask for a manager. I will add that we had a similar experience but not as aggressive at their location in Mexico City. What they did there was bring 'refills' of our alcoholic beverages before they were requested. What a fun evening at Sonora grill. This brand new restaurant at Playa is hip, trendy and classy! Walk up the stairs and you'll be welcomed by handsome men in black suits and a team of staff ready to wine and dine you. Service here is impeccable. And if you're into... well.... good looking men, you'll have plenty of that here. From the door men, to the mixologist (yes there's a mixologist), to the DJ... easy on the eyes. We couldn't quite figure out why the place was full of men... raining men! We only saw one woman among all the staff...hmmm. Ok enough of that. Onto the food and drinks. First you'll be served house made tortilla chips with a delicious warm bean dip and different sauces from mild to spicy. Cracking octopus for apps, tasted like calamari, decent but not my favorite. For entree we got the cowboy steak and prawns. Both superb! Steak was juicy and prawns were fresh with great smoky BBQ flavor. We got asparagus and mushrooms for sides, nothing memorable but nice to have some veggies with the meal. Finally was dessert. We got the guava cheesecake, highly recommend! Little did we know they'd bring homemade ice cream cones before we left. How could we say no! Also delicious and nice extra treat from the restaurant. We came hungry and left stuffed! Drinks: like i said, there's a mixologist which makes your cocktail experience more unique. My margarita was good, but was a little light on the alcohol. Server gave me a glass of red wine to accompany my steak and it was the perfect compliment to my meal. Plus they are extra fancy pouring their wine in an aerator... that was a new one! Overall loved my dining experience, particularly because of the ambiance and service. One suggestion for the restaurant is to turn down the air condition.
