Another member whom I'd never met before, confronted me aggressively in the locker room--loud, intimidating, invasive, and completely unprovoked. But the real shock was the YMCA's response: almost nothing. Weeks passed before any meaningful action was taken, and even then it was a token gesture, not a solution. What makes this worse is learning that the same member targeted another Asian-American woman only weeks before me. Still, the YMCA brushed everything aside as if it wasn't serious. This is not about drama. It's about the YMCA failing to protect women in their facility. The lack of accountability and the dismissive attitude from leadership were honestly far more traumatizing than the incident itself. If you're considering joining--especially if you're a woman or a person of color--please read this as a warning.

This is a great community center, complete with coffee, tea, juice and personable staff. They host…read moremany events to educate or promote discussion on progressive politics. The only thing that bothered me is their irrational decision-making process. The acoustics in the building are so atrocious that, if there's music in one event room, people can't hear the speaker or each other in the other gathering room. So I found some clean, undamaged foam boards and asked whether they'd like them. They said yes, and I brought them in to cover the glass door to one of the rooms. Then someone they'd known longer came along and opined that SEEING styrofoam would cause people to buy it, and they threw it into the dumpster. So now they still have rotten sound, and those foam boards will be leaching toxins into the ground until Earth falls back into the sun.

I was impressed with the multitude of spaces available, the friendliness of the staff represented, and the acoustics, perfect for music. The location would be great for a dance or social, and effortlessly accommodated a huge crowd of multi-generational attendees. My only concern, and angst was the parking. We ended up leaving part way through to find dinner, and upon returning there was no parking anywhere, even on the street. This is a great problem to have, I think, because it proved the turnout and support of a community this dedicated, even in a small space. Regardless, we ended up parking 7 blocks down and walking, which proved to be a challenge once the event was over and was dark with no street lights. Overall quite the venue, and such a great asset to the City of Sebastopol!

Christian at the front desk was helpful, as well, and everything was organized to a T. Class started right on time and ended on time. The vibes of the place are on point, as you can tell by reviews Flying Frog creates a community, not just offers a class. I'm excited to see my son grow and learn with this community, we've already signed up for a membership and had a friend to do the same. You should, too!

The Sonoma space is a really cool old house with gorgeous decorations inside (I think mostly thanks to VOICES, which is the shared space run for/by foster youth ages 16-24) and the staff members are friendly. It's a great place both for resources and for meeting people. There's parking behind the building and un-metered spots on the surrounding few blocks (I mention because stress about this kept me from stopping by the first time). Check the website to see what's up before you go, there's a pretty thorough calendar (and looking that up I just saw that there's a Sonoma Valley location too? Today I learned).

They've significantly upgraded the facilities- there's a kitchen, the main area is spacious&bright, and there are clean public restrooms. It used to be a bit of an eyesore beside the Sharpsteen Museum- now it's a pleasant pit stop. Interesting trivia- The thing that looks like a yellow fire hydrant in the parking lot is a capped geyser. An ordinary fate for an extraordinary natural feature.

You'd live in Rohnert Park to have more space to raise a family or get away from big city life (there was a bump in median income and population in 2020) or you'd be there if you teach or are a student at Sonoma State University. The town has the usual suburban amenities of fast food, juice bars, banks, Starbucks peppered with cute little shops and mom 'n pop casual restaurants. Chain restaurants and upscale dining are both here. The proximity to Sonoma and all it has to offer is just minutes away.
