I've been coming here for years but after these last two visits I will never come back. At the first I came in excited to finally do a bigger chop and get a new look. After asking a specific length, I was told that they would cut it down but not that short and see how I felt which I didn't love but I said okay I guess. After it was cut, as expected, I asked for it to be cut shorter since the length they chose to do was not long enough and was told that it would be cut after it was styled. It was like she wanted me to see it so that I could just say yes after it was blow dried. After she blow dried it I asked for it to be cut shorter as I had originally requested and was given an attitude. She cut it again but it still wasn't as short as I had asked so I told her AGAIN. It made me uncomfortable because I didn't want to be a pain but at the same time as a paying customer I felt that I should get to choose what I would be happy with and it was not being cut the length that I wanted. Eventually, I finally asked her to cut it shorter for the last time and to which she audibly complained to her boss about having to cut it multiple times in front of me. I asked for half inch and my hair was cut from about shoulder length to chin length - I went home in tears. Now this time. I've come here for color before and the services have been great. This time I came in for a full dye (specifically) and asked for blonde and was told that it would not be as light as my reference in one visit as my hair was too dark. Understandable. But what I am bothered by is the fact that I specifically said multiple times that I did not want brown hair and even said that if it was going to be brown I would do another color. The teacher suggested brown instead and I was told to think on it. I said that I did not want to do brown and asked for it to be as light as possible. Was told that it might possibly be a darker ashy blonde or medium blonde. When all was said and done my hair is now uneven - various shades of brown with blonde highlights (I never asked for highlights and specifically said I wanted a full dye). On top of that my roots were left completely black and it looks like the color is already growing out (pic) like what is that ??? And it wasn't cheap. I was met with shock when I said I did not like it and had to pay as nothing would be done. Completely ridiculous I would never go back and much less recommend. read more

I went here for my wedding hair. After being quoted $600 for someone to do my hair (only the bride's hair), I decided to go to SoNo Beauty Academy since my wedding was just a casual backyard party. Only $28 for party hair was too good to pass up. I made an appointment for myself, sister, best friend, and mother/sister-in-law. Of the 5 of us, 3 were very happy with our hair, and 2 had to make adjustments themselves when they got home. I had Sally and was very happy with how full and bridal she made my hair look without making me look like a stranger. It held tight the whole night and looks great in all the photos. Two others in my group were also happy with how their hair came out. Two people in my group were unhappy with their hair. One clearly told her hair dresser that she did not want curls from a curling iron and instead ended up with "Shirley Temple" curls from a curling iron. Another in our group had her hair dresser leave in the middle of the appointment to pay her parking, and then start working on another client's hair when she returned without any explanation. It took much longer for her to have her hair done because of these distractions, and she ended up having to fix some of her hair when we got back. Overall I think it depends on which student you have do your hair. I would give my hair a 5, but others in my group were not happy so I gave a 3 overall. It can be hit or miss depending on the professionalism of the student. I am happy with how it came out, and the 2 that were unhappy with their hair were able to make adjustments themselves and resolve the issues they didn't like. read more

I've never had a bad experience with color, but with my recent haircut, I've decided I'm never going back (8+ year customer). To hasten the time (my stylist was moving slowly), a teacher stepped in to cut my hair. This teacher cut off chunks and asked me if I wanted "normal layers" or "classy" layers. When I went back in a week later to get my "layers" (aka chunks of hair) fixed, I got a lot of attitude from the owner. I only see a particular stylist now because she is wonderful, but when she graduates, I'm goin' with her. My greatest complaint is the lack of professionalism. The stylists bad mouth customers and each other while cutting hair and it makes me very uncomfortable. I get stares when I walk in, not greetings, and the owner has been not-nice more than once. As I said, I'm an 8+ year customer, and I keep coming back for the price and because I found two stylists that I really like. I'll probably go back one more time, and when my favorite stylist graduates, I'll be heading to a salon where professionals work. read more

As a recent transplant to Norwalk from NYC, I was thrilled to find the Sono Academy within walking distance of my apartment. I walked in without an appointment for a clean-up job on my pixie cut, which I'm growing out and which was starting to look a little bit ragged. Everyone was incredibly pleasant, and all the people I encountered -- students and clients alike -- had absolutely great hair, so clearly they're a skilled bunch. The student stylist who attended to me (Amy, I think?) gave me a terrific haircut. It was an absolute steal (thirteen dollars WHAT) and to my eye, it's indistinguishable from the $60 -$80 crops I used to shell out for at various trendy places in Brooklyn. The only reason I'm not giving the place 5 stars on this go-round is that, although the cut is terrific, it's also not what I asked for. She went quite a bit shorter than I requested (and despite my specifically mentioning that I was trying to grow it out). It's not a tragedy, and it'll grow back fast enough, but this could have been avoided if the teacher had stuck around just to watch her make the first cut, which is something I'll probably request next time. This review is about getting a haircut, I don't know anything about the quality of the schooling there. They take walk in haircuts here to use as guinea pigs to let their students learn, but the haircuts I've gotten here are far and away better than anywhere else in the area. The students care, and want to do well so it does take a little more time, but they are very thorough. After they finish one of the teachers comes to inspect their job, and suggest any changes. I've always been really happy with the results. Much better haircut for around $13 compared to $40+ at the salon on Washington St. I see lots of women in here getting color, etc so I would say check it out if you need something simple done. read more

Went on the recommendation of 2 of my friends, and glad I did! For $20 I got a shampoo, excellent cut, and blow dry. You really can't beat that! My stylist was supervised almost the whole time which made me feel very at ease, and I am so happy with how my cut turned out. The only reason I docked one star is that it didn't feel totally professional the whole time--like getting a little water on my face during the shampoo, and having side conversations with other stylists during my cut. But all in all very satisfied with my experience here! The salon is really nice and feels very upscale! I will definitely be going back for my next cut! read more

Updated: April 2017 My wife and I have been regular customers of SONO Academy Salon for two years and have always been very pleased, hence the former 5 Star rating, but in the last several months there has been a rapid and very noticeable deterioration in the quality of service and hair styling supervision which has made it impossible for my wife and I to continue to take our chances in getting our hair cut here. In the past, we were always comfortable that with proper supervision and customer service, we would always leave with an excellent cut. This is no longer the case. Cuts have not only been erratic but almost guaranteed to be poor. The customer service desk is entirely unresponsive and even misleads us when making an appointment. While we we waited several months hoping that the Salon management will correct the issues, it seems that for one reason or another, the situation remains as it is. Given that there is no longer any reason to recommend this salon (who needs to pay someone to butcher our hair when we can do that it on our own?), I am dropping my rating to 1 Star. Love it. Plan on going back. The staff/students are so friendly, they really listen to you, and they want to get it absolutely right. Besides, I loved hearing the teacher/supervisor talk to my stylist, because I actually learned things about my hair that I might not have found out otherwise. Doesn't hurt that it is super cheap for a really great cut. That said, my one complaint is that it took for.ev.er. I was just getting a trim with some long layers and bangs cleaned up, and was there for almost two hours. TWO HOURS. No color, no highlighting, not changing the whole construct of my hair. But it was a process of making a cut, waiting for the teacher to inspect, going further, waiting again. I mean, my girl was thorough (you better be when you have me remaining stationary for such a period of time), but it did get a little tedious after a while. However, I would gladly stay just as long, again, if it meant I got the same quality cut and service. In fact... I plan on calling this week for another appointment. read more

While there is no denying there prices are very attractive, from my experience the low cost does not out weigh the risk of a sub par cut. I have been there twice and my first time was OK (about 2.5 stars). I got a cut and a glaze. The cut turned out fine but there were several "ugh oh" moments throughout the glaze as the student learned you can't simply mix a light and a dark glaze color to get the desired look. It came out ok, but no without a lot of stress and angst along the way. Not a fun experience. My second time, I thought I would forgo the stressful glaze experience and just get a trim. I have very straight, fine hair so I didn't think there was too much that could go wrong. Couldn't have been more wrong. My hair was cut far shorter than I asked for and the student kept frantically cutting "trying to get it to be straight". The teacher finally told her to stop and tried to fix it herself. Despite this, I walked out with a CROOKED CUT. The teacher said "no body will notice, you've probably had worse cuts than this before..." Not my idea of good customer service. My hair is about .5 inch longer on one side. I am going straight away to a professional salon get this fixed and will not be returning. read more

This place is a treasure. I love this place ! The staff is super friendly and the students are conscientious and very skilled! Cassandra is fabulous and the front desk staff. I highly recommend this place. The color and style -and highlights are much better than many high priced salons in the area . The prices are just fabulous . Just plan to spend extra time as students work on you but they are all wonderful and skilled! I can't say enough positive things . I wish they were open longer and later hours and open on Sundays ! It's taken me a while to write this review, however I know it needs to be put out there. I made an appointment here and I was planning on getting a full head of highlights and a blowout. I loved that students got the experience and I didn't have to pay the high price tag. When I got there, a student who was pretty rude was evaluating and asking what I wanted. Then an adult or supervisor rather, came over and was looking at my hair. They said they would be right back and then they brought A THIRD person. The student stylist walked away without saying anything and one of the adults said "don't freak out but we think you have lice". I said, what? And they said yes, we can't service your hair today and you should go see someone ASAP. I was FLIPPING out. I have curly hair and I blow dry it often, so I would think I noticed. Well, I called The Lice Lady in tarrytown who has helped my sister before, and she could see me right away. I drove from NORWALK to Tarrytown because they told me they thought I had lice. The PROFESSIONAL lice lady told me that there was a trace of absolutely nothing and not even dandruff, maybe some product but that's it. I called SoNo and explained to them what happened and they didn't even apologize or offer me a discount to come in another day. I took the WHOLE day off of work and never even got an apology from the salon for wasting my time and day. I understand the students are learning but if you're going to be running a salon, you need to have professionals overseeing who aren't saying clients have lice at the first sight of a white dot. I inquired about their makeup certification and got a text from their admissions director asking if I had any questions. I asked about the scholarship program they show on their webpage and if it was available towards the field of study I was interested in. 24 hours go by without text and then I get an answer telling me about how much classes are, which I did not ask. I ask again about the scholarship program. Then I am ignored for two days. I send an email and get no reply to that. Finally after texting her again I get an answer saying there is no scholarship program for the makeup certification. I would have liked to know that three days ago. It seems like they figured they'd get no money out of me and ignored me. I would have applied to the program without the scholarship and paid the tuition but their incompetence made me think otherwise. read more

I arrived at SoNo academy for the first time to find out that my appointment all of a sudden was not in the scheduling book. It just disappeared apparently. So, that put a bad taste in my mouth right from the get go. When I had made the appointment, the receptionist stated she would give me a senior hair stylist (student level). Well, the girl they gave me was supposedly a senior hair stylist, but it was clear she really didn't have any substantial experience in just doing the basics. She was very nice, but didn't have a clue how to cut bangs or how to really blow dry my hair. Then her teacher came over to state that his student knows how to cut bangs and stands behind her 100 percent but mistakes are made. Once I heard that, I figured I would not take that chance and just cut my losses and let her finish cutting my hair (straight across) and then leave. I thought that a teaching salon would try to be little more professional, especially the teaching staff. Instead I was given attitude when I requested anything. If you really want to know how the true experience at Sono Academy is....please read. A very good friend of mine from work recommended Kathy at the academy. I was going to another salon in Stamford and thought I would save myself some money so I decided to look into the academy. I have a long bob and I was extremely nervous to change places, especially considering I used to drive back home to Long Island to get my hair done. After talking to my friend at work she raved about Kathy and told me I wouldn't regret going. When I first walked into the Salon in the back it was a bit overwhelming with a lot of people and little direction but after about 5 minutes I figured out what I needed to do. I went up to the front desk to find no one there but after a few the receptionist had returned and asked me to sign the waiver. It would make most extremely nervous to sign this but the academy has to cover themselves for liability reasons. I met Kathy who is very friendly, warm and has great style. You would never know her age because she looks incredible. I went into my little nervous rant about my hair but she was very quick to make me feel sooo much better. She used to have a haircut like mine and one of the educators Nick (who was there when I went) used to cut her hair. I made sure when making my appointment that Nick was available just in case. My hair is super short and stacked in the back and quite long in the front so I didn't want to mess around. Kathy began to cut my hair and would call Nick over every once in a while if she didn't feel comfortable. I will agree with some of the other reviewers that you should prepare to be at the salon a while but once again it was so worth it. Kathy continued to cut my hair with little supervision and then blew it out. After the blow dry she painted a few highlights on, I have an ombre kind of effect going on. My whole head isn't highlighted but only wanted a few accent pieces. If you are going for color make sure to ask for Elysse. She is AMAZING!! She is also a student but knew exactly what I wanted and wasn't pushy at all. She made sure to check in from time to time but Kathy was the one who did most of my color. After around 30 minutes I was washed and then blow dry'd again and then both girls took a look at the final cut and shaped it some more. Both Kathy and Elysse were meticulous and didn't leave one end standing out. I knew I was in good hands and felt the most comfortable. If I had to measure my nervousness on a scale from 1 to 10 I'd say I was at an 8. Don't be mislead by some of the negative reviews here. Take my word for it and go to see Kathy and Elysse, you won't be disappointed. I will definitely be back. So I have given the academy three tries. The first time I went for a blow out, it was great- my hair came out awesome and I loved it. Second time I went in for a simple blow out and some curls and ending up being there for about 1 1/2 hours which I understood since it is students doing my hair. The student didn't know what she was doing really but the instructor took charge and my hair looked good at the end. However, my last time there was last Friday and I went in for a simple blow out. I figured $18 was a perfect price for the day event I was going to-- Worst experience yet! The student did not know how to blow out hair, had to get her instructor to help which I understood. However, again I was there for an 1 1/2 hour for a simple blow out, plus they charged me $28 for the pins which I felt was ridiculous after the experience I had. I made an appointment a week in advance, got to the salon, got dressed and ready to have my hair colored, and the initial stylist had absolutely no clue what she was doing and needed to call her teacher. When he arrived, because I had a tiny scratch on my head, they apparently needed to call the owner, who said it would be a liability to color my hair (in 10 years of coloring my hair, this has never been an issue) and I was offered no alternatives, while the staff sat there gawking like it was a sideshow. I knew it was an academy, but the level of unprofessionalism, ineptitude, and rudeness was truly staggering. The worst experience I've had at a salon in my life. read more

Terrible place, my haircut isn't the issue, as i can see my student stylist knew what she was doing, however it took way too long because she had to run and get her teacher EVERY TIME she had to do something different. I had a root touch up (call the teacher) haircut, (call the teacher) blowdry ( call the teacher), I mean seriously?! And when I asked why she had to keep stepping away she replied I will get in trouble if I don't ask a teacher to check you.... My mother went here to get her hair washed and they refused to finish washing her hair because they said she had lice in it. My mother does NOT have lice and it definitely hasn't been the first time she's been there to get her hair done by these nasty people. I really really wanted to like this place. Great environment, close to home. I had been to the Danbury CT academy in the past and never walked out regretting spending money or time there. Unfortunately...I would not go back to SoNo, or recommend it to anyone. I had an appointment for a color and cut, which was confirmed the day prior as just that...a color and cut. After my color they asked if I wanted a blow dry. I said That I think we should do my cut first. The woman's respect new was that they don't have me down for a cut and I told her I had absolutely booked a cut with my color and could anyone give me a quick cut? Her response, after checking with one of the instructors was "no, I'm sorry we are booked solid and even my manager said we don't have you down for a cut". I started to complain a little because not only was I nervous about the job the did cleaning the hair dye off of my skin (I was literally still licking my fingers to try and clean it off better in the car when I left!), so they finally told me that one girl had a cancellation and would cut my hair. Ok, thanks for 'fitting me in'. When I went to check out, the receptionist said "you are absolutely booked for a color AND cut so I apologize if they told you otherwise". Mind you, the lady that cut me was pretty rude. She left my hair damp and told me her next client was there so she basically was done with me. I wound up drying my OWN hair. Never again. I have been going to this Salon for the last three years and i was very very happy until recently. The last two times weren't a good experience for me. I had to come back and fix the mess that the student did not to mention that i had to pay extra for it. The manager of the school even kept telling me that i am the one who is wrong and misbehaving?! They twice over bleached me which caused them to glaze my hair (i had to pay for that even though that both times it was their fault!!!) They also cut my hair totally uneven. I came both time for a fix but i will need to go and fix it at a professional Salon since it is still very uneven. When they fixed it they insisted on doing it on dry/damped hair and since my hair was in a ponytail all day it wasn't as flat as usual. Yes i am aware of the fact that they are students but someone need to check those students much more closely and make sure that this won't happen. and when it does happen then bare the cost. in the past they did have an instructor checking but lately the instructor is someone who was just a student couple of months ago who is very nice but apparently not experienced. DO NOT GO THERE unless you really don't care about your hair. the girls that cut my hair were very nice both time but extremely not professional and after all you want to have a good hair cut and color at first. with all the money i spent there including gas i could go to the best Salon in town, not to mention the time... i feel very bad since i referred my friends and they also had a very bad experience, so bad that they didn't even bother coming back to fix it. read more

I recently dyed my hair at Sono Academy. I wasn't expecting a perfect color which is why prices are lower BUT I have dye all around my face. Very sloppy job. And these are students so I expected to have teachers checking in. They did not. The student applied WAY too much color on my thin hair and I was charged for this extra color!!! I had been to this school years ago and remember it being run differently...I'm disappointed! I also left with a wet head. I would have been charged extra for a blow dry. I'm just overall not happy with the service. The student had to wash my hair 4x to get the color out...that's how much she used. And the teacher at the end of my appointment, decided to come help scrub the dye off my head. So I'll be walking about with a dark ring around my face because teachers weren't around supervising. I am a 38 year old female who typically gets $80-90 haircuts plus tips. I decided to try Sono Academy and am very pleased. The girl who cut my hair was very thorough and meticulous and her instructors inspected and cleaned up twice during the cut. There was a full head shampoo with massage and I opted for the blowdry for an extra $4 (a whopping $17 haircut). I am very pleased with the results and would definitely go back. One caveat is that the student I had cut my hair needed a lot of direction so don't go in without a game plan. The receptionist was very pleasant as well. read more

So I know this is an academy and you can't expect 100% of anything done right but it's absurd that they do things completely wrong and then not take responsibility for it. To make the story short, I went to get a light brown hair, and came out with dark auburn. When I complained they just told me it would eventually get more brown as I continue to wash it. It looks like something I could of come up with from a box color set. Really disappointed. What's the point of having your hair damaged to a color completely different to what you wanted. But since I don't like to make a big fuss I left,( also because they told me I need to wait at least a month to try to re-color hair) This morning when I was washing my hair, yellow dye (which is the one they used for my hair) was pouring from my scalp, I had to wash at least 5 times to get it out. Really! that's damaging that I had dye I my hair for a whole day! They couldn't even wash hair. Do not recommend. It's more efficient to go see videos and try it on your own because that's what it feels like they are doing. Waste of time and money. read more

I am so happy to have found the academy! When I started looking for a make up certification program, I really didn't know what I wanted or needed out of a program. Talking to Sarah, I knew that SONO was offering the program for me. With the guidance of Dina and Sarah, I have learned so much about make up artistry. What really makes the program in my opinion is having such experienced and personable instructors. I always look forward to class and am sad to be walking out the door when it is over. i was going to someone for my roots and she was on vacation so someone said try ingrid well went there and Nicole the TEACHER MIXED MY ROOT COLOR completley dark had to go back on saturday and they tried to lift it did not do a thing so i paid only 65.00 but the color is horrible and Nicole should not be a teacher .........she screwed up my hair and i want to be refunded.. not what i wanted.. Dena was very nice i paid again on saturday it did not do a thing.. i had 5 weeks of regrowth and they said ingrid was good.. omg would never go there again for color ... maybe a blowdry... they need to refund my money back or nicole who supposedly a teacher should refund my money its horrible.. i will not put bleach or lif color with bleach i called to have nicole get back to me and she never did.. i know its a school but the teacher mixed the color not thee student she applied it.. horrible horrible would never go back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
