I've never had a bad meal here. The service is friendly, and has a cool atmosphere. Usually we just call in and take out. Sometimes they can take a really long time to get your food out, depending on how the wind/weather are treating the grill. The steaks are delicious, and so are the BBQ Baked Potatoes. Great BBQ...this place is always a treat!! Your first time.coming here, you may miss the spot if you aren't looking hard for it. It's definitely off the beaten path. Sonny's is not a place for the beautiful people, it is for the rest of us. A simple country smokehouse that welcomes you with the aroma of aged wood burning slowly in the pits, doing its magic to the meats inside. You are greeted by smiling hoists and you make your order. It's like you teleported into a Norman Rockwell picture from the 1930's. I had the rib eye sandwich which was tender and delicious! It didn't "melt" in your mouth, no it stayed there allowing your mouth to enjoy the flavors and textures. My only wish was a tad less salt and a couple more stomachs. This is a strong 4 start on taste and character. I got to talk to Sonny, a nice man he even gave me a taste of his brisket, he treated me too good! If you are in the area, eat like a local, stop at Sonny's. But ask someone where it is, it's set back from the road, and easy to miss. If you crossed the railroad track, turn around you went too far! Ten years ago our Sonny's in Inverness Fl. was awesome. But the last few years it has become even less than 2nd rate They can't seem to keep a manager for more then a few months. The food just keeps getting worse. Several months back I had Dry Rub Ribs that I couldn't eat, they were so tuff my jaw was hurting from trying to chew them. This is an odd review for me - because in the 12 years that my wife and I have been together - I would never imagine doing a review of a restaurant in her home town. Ackerman is a small town and my wife's family lives in Bywy which is right outside Ackerman - in other words its the country; and we all know that if you grew up in the country - you rarely pay to go out to eat - because EVERYONE cooks. I usually do a majority of the grilling when I come up from Jackson - but I just wasn't in the mood to sit over a grill for 6 to 8 hours on this trip. I asked my father-in-law where to get some BBQ - he really couldn't remember the name of the place in town - but he knew the location. Luckily, someone else did a review on Sonny's Smokehouse prior to me. It's a little spot - sandwiched between two small businesses - but they are right across the street from a Family Dollar if you are looking for a land mark to find them. I had a hankering for ribs that day - so I ordered the rib dinner. It came with two sides - so I asked for baked beans and the loaded potato salad. They do have a mustard potato salad as well. They use the spare rib (which is my favorite cut) and they give you sauce on the side. Yelp needs to add half stars - because Sonny's is a solid 3.5. They are a respectable BBQ place. The only drawback for me was the price. The rib plate was $12 and some change - with four ribs. I usually expect about 5 or 6 when I order a rib plate from a BBQ joint. The baked beans were good, if you don't mind sweet. The potato salad was pretty good. The ribs were very tender and taste was solid, not too salty - not too bland. Now their sauce is unique - its like a Texas picante mixed with Mississippi sweet. I really appreciated the uniqueness of it - its not the best I've ever had, but it is distinct and its in the Top 10 and that's after sampling BBQ in Tennessee, Texas, Alabama, Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Sonny's Smokehouse deserves a spot on the Mississippi BBQ trail list and I will make sure I forward their information on to them. If you are ever close to Ackerman and have a taste for some BBQ - give Sonny's Smokehouse a try. read more

One taste of the brisket would convert even the most staunch and hard-nosed non believer. The tender smokiness of the brisket is just the beginning. I dare you to try to keep the rib meat on the bone. I dare you to not try to live in the parking lot forever after tasting the ribeye sandwich (the best steak you'll ever have the honor of experiencing). This BBQ was amazing. You HAVE to try the ribeye/ribeye sandwich. By far the most amazing I've ever had in my life. The food deserves an outstanding 5 stars. I do wish there was a better place to sit and eat but the food makes up for this lacking part of a typical restaurant. Let me start by saying the food is excellent. My service however was not. I waited over an hour for food. My group was the only customers. Call in orders came and went, but the only sit down customers in the restaurant were ignored. Normally I'm understanding about delays, especially if the food is worth the wait. We were on a 3-day motorcycle/BBQ run. This little unique place was first on our list. After about 6 hours riding it was time for dinner and BOY WAS IT WORTH THE WAIT! The location can be a bit tricky to find. Yes, it is the little shack on the hill behind the fence...lol The service was nonchalant. to say the least. LAID back but personable. After a little wait we received our food and it was DELICIOUS!! The ribs were TENDER and TASTY! We ride ALL over the south tasting BBQ for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner and Sonny's Brisket is the BEST that I have EVER tasted! Juicy with a hint of smoke taste and TENDER... I ate at Sonny's for the first time this weekend and it is honestly some of the best BBQ and steak I've had in a while. I write for a food magazine so I was lucky to be able to taste several things.
