Arepas is my favorite place in Starkville. Every time my parents come down to visit we are there everyday. The food is fantastic you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. What a great find! We loved the food here. We tried the sampler plate, Venezuelan plate, perico plate, and kids burger. The kids burger is full size adult burger and no side. Our dishes were are very flavorful and I could have easily overstuffed myself. The location is the main drawback. It's nicely done but too small with only a few tables and like 6 parking spots that are shared among several busy businesses including other popular restaurants. Our server was a little slow and didn't bring out the appetizer until the food was already there too. Luckily it worked out because the sampler was so hot it needed a few minutes to cool down before we could touch it anyways. If you can get a spot it's definitely worth a try. read more

I finally tried the sweet potato arepa and it was awesome! It'll be a rough choice between that and the corn base next time I'm back. We were the first customers on a Sunday as we entered the restaurant this morning we felt a bit as though we were interrupting the staff... afterwards we were promptly seated and served by a pleasant young man who took the order. We wish they had more bagel options because the plain are meh (just ok). The American had a generous amount of ingredients (scrambled eggs covered with Gouda cheese). and the sausage was also "ok" - nothing stellar but better than " just edible." Overall it was all "ok" - nothing to run back to, but nothing horrible either. Since they were very few options for breakfast or brunch on a Sunday morning before 10 AM, it'll do.. The ambience is fine if you can sit outside otherwise it is college town decor. read more

My husband and I stopped in on a Friday morning. It was pretty busy but we were able to be seated right away. We ordered within 10 mins of being there. The service was pretty slow despite the waitresses walking around often and seemingly busting a move. A different waitress other than the one who had taken our order, brought out our food and asked if there was anything else that we needed. We said that we still hadn't received our coffees yet and that she would "check on them." At this point, we had been there for over 30 mins. That is way too long to be waiting for an americano and a speciality drink, even when it is busy. Another 20 mins go by and we're ready to leave... still no coffees. I noticed that the table next to us that had arrived after us had received their coffees already meaning that ours were forgotten or never actually checked up on. We ended up just asking for them to cancel the coffees, we paid for our check and left. Sad that we weren't able to get coffees from this place but oh well... we took our coffee business elsewhere. Overall, I would come back for food but I think that this place needs to have one person dedicated to bussing tables/ running food items so that they don't have someone trying to make coffee, seat people and buss tables all at the same time. read more

Loved this spot! It was so cozy and cute. Visiting Starkville from out of town and this was a perfect breakfast restaurant. I had an iced cinnamon roll latte, plantain huevo con salchicha arepa and split an egg, cheese, and bacon biscuit with my boyfriend. The honey on the biscuit was so so good. I've been here twice for breakfast with my daughter. First time I tried the Venezuelan Breakfast Platter with ham, Venezuelan cheese, fried eggs, bacon and arepa. On the most recent visit I decided to be more adventurous and picked the Cachapa with Asada and Venezuelan Cheese Sticks for an appetizer. The breakfast platter was very good but the Cachapa was amazing! It is like a cross between a crepe and a pancake made with a cornmeal base, stuffed with cheese and asada. The asada was tender and incredibly flavorful. The cheese sticks were also wrapped in the cornmeal before frying and really good as well. Both times I had Blackberry juice to drink. The first time it was really good, the second it was meh. Probably wouldn't get again due to inconsistency. Seating can feel a little on the cramped side, especially moving past the bar area to where most of the seating is. Service was on the slow side even though staffing appeared to be adequate for the amount of tables. By the time we finished, there were quite a few people waiting outside for tables to empty. read more

Came here with friends for brunch before we left Starkville after attending the MSU/Auburn game. We had a nice time. As expected, pretty much every restaurant in the Cotton District was absolutely packed. Arepas sits a little bit off the main road, but it's easy enough to find. I'm not sure if that's why they were a little less busy than other restaurants, but regardless, we somehow lucked into being able to be seated almost immediately, not counting the time we spent waiting for a waitstaff member to be able to address us. It's a tiny little restaurant but very cute and modern looking; fun decorations and accents, bright colors, pretty table and glassware. The menu is full of delicious-sounding items. It was hard to pick just a couple of things to try. They also have an extensive selection of specialty coffee drinks. Service was VERY nice, albeit a little slow. It took them a while to acknowledge us at the hostess booth, and our food and coffee also took a little longer than ideal to be delivered. That being said, they were very busy and either understaffed or overwhelmed or both, so I can understand why that happened. The four of us ordered a round of tequeños as a starter. It wound up coming out at around the same time as our entrees, but at that point we were so hungry we were happy to have food at all, haha. The portion size felt a little small - only four small sticks - BUT the price was low so it balances out. They were crispy, a little less gooey than your typical cheese stick, and the dipping sauce was delicious. For our entrees, everyone at our table got some variation of an arepa. Can't remember the specifics of everyone's choices, but all of us were happy! I had the build your own and kept all the toppings except avocado -- a corn arepa with pulled chicken, black beans, plantains, bacon, queso fresco, and Gouda cheese! They forgot to remove the avocado like I asked, but it wasn't a problem for me to take it off myself. It was very tasty and quite filling. My first time trying an arepa -- nice crispy texture on the outside, kind of chewy-gooey on the inside. The fillings were all delicious and obviously high quality. The bacon was especially good. I also had an iced peppermint chocolate latte. Could've gone for sliiiightly more chocolate flavor, and it also came out really late (we were almost done eating), but all in all I enjoyed it! The price isn't bad for the location of the restaurant and quality of the food, either. Overall, I'd absolutely return here to try other tasty sounding dishes (or reorder my same meal -- really solid stuff). read more

In the meantime three tables that came in and ordered after us, were served while we kept waiting. Asked the waitress about it and she said our order got pushed back. Why would it get "pushed back"?? Did she forget to put in our order? I then asked what about the appetizers we ordered 45 minutes ago.. she shrugged and asks me if I wanted her to go check on it. I was in town to visit a friend and she recommended Arepas. I was very excited to try Venezuelan food but I was a little disappointed by my experience. We were sat by the bar, so the employees were kind of staring at us. The tables were sticky but the interior design was cute. Water was served immediately but with no ice. I asked my server for ice and she said their ice machine was broken which turned out to be a lie. A few minutes later I heard the sound of ice being scooped since we were so close to the bar, and it was a personal drink for the coffee. I would've preferred if the server just said they didn't serve ice with water, rather than blatantly lie. The food was a little bland but looked fine. read more

Delicious! The best way to describe this unique spot on Main St. I saw this place when I first came to town on business and decided to grab some lunch on the way out of town. I now want to come back just to eat here again! What an awesome spot! I had the Arepa with the sweet potato base, brisket, and all the toppings. I finished it off with a Tres Leches and washed it down with an unsweet tea. The tea was smooth, not bitter and refreshing. The Americano is good, too! I love the food at Arepa's. They make their arepas out of ground corn rather then corn flour. I got the Venezuelan breakfast, and it was tasty and filling. I will not get the avocado next time though because at $2.00 I thought it was a little expensive. Everyone I was with enjoyed their meals as well. It blows my mind that there is an excellent Venezuelan restaurant in Starkville, Mississippi. One problem I have is that the place is smaller than my living room, so it takes forever to get a seat. To make it worse, it has coffeehouse vibes, so people just sit and linger at their table. So when I go here for breakfast, I am annoyed when I finally get to sit down, and my family is worried that I am going to cause a scene. However, the servers are all so friendly that I my bad mood goes away. This is such a cool place, but I wish it were just bigger. read more

What a change of pace. This place on the inside is cool, they do all sorts of coffee, and the food is awesome The arepas are perfect. I stick with corn arepas with the pulled pork. It's not like bbq pulled pork, it's like slow cooked Latin style. I'm uncultured as it gets so I didn't know if I picked it up like a hamburger, or cut it apart, so I did the American thing and picked it up like a Big Mac and smashed it like I wished State football would smash the rest of the SEC. The Venezuelan hotdog was just a one off and I'm into weird sausages, so I got it. It was unique, and delicious. the toppings all worked together in some weird way, it's a cool appetizer to try. The cheese stick things are great too, and the sauce they come with is amazing. The coffee is the best cup you'll have around. I'm certain this is an amazing place and I was just the product of bad timing. I traveled 45 minutes to go here and upon entering was greeted with energy and smiles, great ambiance and hometown feel. I was even offered a better seat after sitting at the last bar seat with minimal leg room. After sitting at the table for at least 15 minutes, not a single person addressed me or took my order. The two waitresses walked behind me on numerous occasions and spoke with other tables, but neither said a word to me nor asked to take my order.
