We learned about The Guest Room when checking out the Restaurant Tyler because they are affiliated establishments. The unmarked door in a back alley gives secret club vibes, and the underground basement aspect only adds to that. The pressed tin ceiling, antique mirrors, and decor provide an historic and upscale ambiance. The cocktail menu and spirit selection are extensive. We tried some of their original creations and they were balanced and beautifully presented without being fussy or pretentious. The servers were very friendly and attentive, and you could tell they truly liked their jobs. Our server shared some interesting history on the building, the bar, and the decor and furnishings. He also offered some brunch suggestions for the next day. We liked this place so much we returned later. They closed earlier than expected but we were offered the opportunity to order a drink to go, an unexpected but welcome option. A honest and long review about our experience at The Guest Room. The hype for this place wasn't worth it. I reallyyyy wanted to write a raving review about this place but there were so many issues that I can't. My husband and I tried coming here two separate times. Once on Thursday night around 8pm and then another time the next night. On Thursday night, we had gone to dinner at Restaurant Tyler and then popped over afterwards to see if we could get a seat. My husband had been before and said it was cool to check out so naturally, I wanted to as well. When we checked it, the girl at the front says it'll be a 45 minute wait. We decided to still put our name down and then just walk around. We ultimately decided to give up our place in line and go back to our airbnb due to being tired from travel that day. The real problems happened the following night. There were 6 people in our group this night. We came around 4pm to put our name down, knowing that it would be a long wait. We were thinking 2 hours maybe.. Upon checking in, the girl at the front writes our name and number down on a order notepad... like the ones the you would if you were a server. I thought this was kind of odd but didn't think much of it. After doing so, the girl proceeds to tell us that it will be at least a 4 hour wait! She says that she'll call us when it's our turn and that we'll have about 10 minutes to show up to claim the table. I couldn't believe it. She further mentions that big tables don't really open up that open which is understandable as it's a reallyyyy small bar. We hadn't eaten dinner yet so we were like okay, no biggie. We'll go have dinner and then check back in when we are done. Dinner runs longer than expected and by the time we finish, it had been about 3.5 hours since we initially checked in. Again, we go down into the bar and tell the girl that we wanted to check on our place in line. She proceeds to tell us that "there was a situation/incident and they had to scrap the list" they had but assured us that since we had put our names down before that she would move our names up so we "didn't lose our place in line" but that it would still be another few hours of a wait. Again, we said okay, no worries, we're going to go to a few of the bars down the street and come back. Fast forward to 10:30pm... we still hadn't heard back from the bar and were getting ready to call it a night. We head back to the bar for the 3rd time. The girl said that the table still wasn't ready and that "as sooooon as this party at the bigger table leaves, it's ours if we want to wait." At this point, this is just getting beyond ridiculous and we are getting frustrated. I understand that there is a "no reservations" and it is strictly walk ins only, however, a 6 hour wait for a table is simply unacceptable, especially when the inital time was roughly 4 hours. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt that because tt was a big game weekend (Texas vs. Mississippi State) so maybe that is contributing to the long wait, but after talking with someone who lives in Starkville and learning that there is always a ridiculous wait, I wasn't feeling as lenient at this point. We ended up being seated and squeezing ourselves in a "4 person" booth after explaining that it's been over 6 hours and just how ridiculous this wait was. After sitting there for about 10 minutes, the bigger table next to us left and we moved over. While we were there, it kind of seemed like the information being told to people who were wanting to be put on the list or were on the list and wanting to check their spot in line was inconsistent. It almost felt like you had to stand there the entire time in order to remind that that you were still waiting. Overall, this experience was so disappointing and they really need a better system for taking names/keeping track of reservations. We probably would have stayed longer and bought more drinks but ultimately only stayed for one round and then leaving. While the interior was super cool, decked out for Halloween and the drinks were good, the whole situation leading up to us being sat really soured the experience. Maybe having a smaller group would have its advantages but we'll never know. read more

This is Starkville's only kinda cool bar for the portion of the population who aren't students/undergraduates. Service is usually pretty attentive and generally knowledgeable. Pricing is on par for S'ville (overpriced, I mean get real this ain't NYC y'all!"). between Thanksgiving and Christmas is always a gun time due to the entire bar being tricked out with holiday decor and super fun and inventive drinks. Paid our first visit to The Guest Room last night and overall had a great experience. Waited about 20 minutes for a couple of spots to open up at the bar, and it was clear they were extremely busy once we got in. Will and the other bartender (didn't get his name) did a great job of keeping up with the bustle while also keeping up with fun conversations with those sitting at the bar. The drinks menu was very expansive (which we loved) and the drinks we ordered were phenomenal. Being that they're connected to Restaurant Tyler, they offer the restaurant's full menu. For our shared app, we ordered the charcuterie board, which was really good although offered not nearly enough crackers (Will was gracious enough to snag some more). For entrees, we opted for the lamb gnocchi and the fried chicken/mac & cheese. The gnocchi and spirals for the mac were a perfect al dente. The fried chicken was cooked really well (fryer oil was not burnt and the meat was not dry), but it was described on the menu as "buttermilk and coconut battered", and I didn't anything resembling coconut flavor in the crust whatsoever. Also, despite the fact that the flavors for both entrees were there, neither dish was seasoned at all. Like...not just not seasoned enough, we couldn't detect even the smallest trace of either salt or pepper in either dish at all, which was really disappointing. Doughnut bread pudding for dessert was absolutely divine. The service was great, drinks were great, the app and dessert were really good, but lack of any seasoning in the entrees left a bad taste in my mouth (pun intended). It was our first visit, so we're willing to give the food another shot and hope that it was just a one-off. If not, we don't want to write off The Guest Room entirely as it's a great little spot overall, would probably just opt to grab dinner elsewhere like Commodore Bob's and after-dinner drinks here. read more

Terrible! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR YOUR MONEY! We waited in line for an hour during Christmas. Our whole party was there to be seated, per instructed. We were the third group in line with multiple open tables and an open bar and they told us they couldn't seat a party of 8. However, there was a part of 3 seated at a 6 top still "waiting on the other 3". So rules apply.....but only to certain people. Go somewhere else in Starkville where they appreciate your business. They don't take reservations, open at 5:00 (allegedly). We were in line at 4:30, maybe 20 people ahead of us. As we stood, we saw multiple groups go in and immediately come back out. A party we knew came out and said they had been told the bar seating (which was empty) "had people coming". Not sure how that works, as they "don't take reservations." When we reached the hostess, we were told there was a 2 hour wait, despite multiple empty tables. We left, but someone we had seen in line was at that point seated at the bar. I've been here in the past and the food/beverages were acceptable, not anything I'd return specifically for, but our group was there for the holiday décor. This is a hidden little gem that was recommended by a local. I was going to a business meeting and wanted to meet for a couple apps and cocktails. He suggested here and told me where to go as there is no signage. It's literally a door in a back alley. We went when it was still bright and sunny out so it took a little bit to adjust to the darkness of the room. It had beautiful tin knocked ceilings, and a really awesome atmosphere. It's dim and oddly kind of sexy. It would be a cool date night spot. It fits the traditionally speak easy. Crafted cocktails, reasonably priced and a menu offering g from Restaurant Tyler upstairs. I love the old throwbacks to the Speak Easies of the 1920s. Located under the Tyler Restaurant, one must go down the street and enter through the dark alley. I love it! I brought my better half here for several drinks after dinner. The service was nice, but a little slow as they were swamped. I ordered the "Bah Rumbug," a drink consisting of Plantation 3-Star rum, syrup, ginger syrup, cranberry juice, lime juice, and Prosecco with shaved nutmeg. A very tasty drink! A high end, underground speakeasy. Upon entering here, you notice it's small, but cozy. And loud! Really loud. You could plot a revolution in here, yelling your plans, and the table over from you wouldn't even notice. It's definitely a dress up kinda place. The upstairs restaurant, Restaurant Tyler, is the place I'd go if I want to eat. I come here to drink high end cocktails to impress people with my knowledge and incorrect French pronunciations of drink names. The drinks are all masterfully produced. Here I learned that Negronis taste awful, and that Moscow mules are very good. This place actually makes their Moscow mules taste like ginger beer instead of diet sprite. If I wanted RC cola and vodka, I'd sit and home and drink myself to sleep on the couch while watching COPS!. This place has a beautiful menu, with expertly crafted drinks, so not my usual joint. You have to go down an alley behind Restaurant Tyler and go down some stairs to a rickety looking door, which I find to be very cool since it is so secluded. The food is unique, although the menu selection is not large. I have had the salmon (it was the fish of the day), crawfish dip, and macaroni dish, and they are all amazing. The cocktails are VERY unique, with ingredients you have never heard of. The attire can be casual, but it is also elegant enough that you can dress up.
