Now that I'm back on the East Coast, I can both trust fish at restaurants more and pay less for it, so I went with the salt cod fish cakes ($17). You know how they say your plate should have lots of different colours of food? Well this was NOT that. While this meal won't win any awards from the Canada Food Guide, it did well by my taste buds. The fish cakes themselves were loosely packed and had a pleasant punch of salty fish, and the green tomato chow brought a contrast of sweet and tangy to the mix. The side of beans had a smattering of what appeared to be bacon in it, and were just the right doneness - not chalky or mushy. Thumbs up! The corn beef hash was a bit greasy, but it was delicious - crisp bits of beef and potato with sauteed onions - it's hard to go wrong here. My wife went for the diner staple, meatloaf ($17). After this meal it became her go-to dish at Appleseed, and I can see why. The generous slab of meatloaf is light and moist, and a slathering of mushroom and onion gravy makes it even more hearty. Ultra-smooth whipped potatoes are a classic pairing, done picture perfect. A medley of veg likely came out of a massive freezer bag, and while a diner fixture, it's one that could be easily replaced with any sort of seasonal veg that is prepared in a better manner than steaming. On our return, I went with the hot chicken sandwich ($17). The roasted chicken was moist and tender, although a little sparse. A hearty slathering of gravy was good, and not too salty. I really appreciated the thick, quality bread that stood up well against the onslaught of gravy. As always, their shoestring fries were spot on. I doubled down on diner decadence and got a strawberry milkshake ($6.50) to drink. Appleseed gets a tip of my cap for using the classic milkshake glass, plus topping it with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. Further bonus points for the extra bit of milkshake coming in the aluminum cup it was mixed in. It was a thick, tasty treat. I still wish Appleseed was in a better location with an interior that called back more to its cozy diner peers rather than strip mall industrial chic, but you can't win 'em all. It's still not easy to get more creative, casual food in Pictou County, so Appleseed is definitely an asset to the local food scene.

When I heard that a new diner was opening in Trenton last fall, it immediately piqued my interest…read more With a menu that's less cumbersome (and less likely to be out of a freezer) than many of its peers, and more of an eye for menu design, it raised my hopes for diner classics that have more love (and skill) put into them. The menu has a handful each of apps, soups and salads, and burgers, plus about ten classic diner entrees. My first visit had me coming by for a late lunch, so I opted for a diner standard - the club sandwich. It was fairly quiet at the restaurant, so my food came out in quick order. The long fries were hand-cut, and on the darker side of golden brown. They were decent, but could have used a blanching in water to remove excess starch and then a double frying to make them crisper. It's hard to have a straight up bad club sandwich, and it's almost even harder to have a truly great one. Like many other restaurants, P&C's falls somewhere in the middle. The bacon was good and crisp, and while the turkey was house-roasted, I wouldn't call it an overly generous portion. The bread was toasted enough that it held up well, but didn't eviscerate my mouth, and a pleasant amount of mayo held things together. A return visit had me coming by with my wife for a late lunch on the weekend. The menu switches modes to have an all day breakfast section, as well as some of their regular items that are available after 11:30am. Leaning toward the breakfasty items, I went for the classic western omelette, while my wife opted for the Coop Deville, a fried chicken sandwich. The crowd was waning as we had arrived in the last couple hours of them being open for the day, so our food arrived quickly. My omelette was a delicious hot mess, with the added-on cheese amping up that mess factor significantly. The eggs had some nice browning like a good dinner omelette does, without being tough or rubbery. I appreciated that the home fries were hand cut, but they were greasy and not where they should have been for crispness. My wife's Coop Deville was a solid fried chicken sandwich - a thick chicken breast with a crisp coating, good amount of bacon, and a hint of sweetness from honey butter, all in a soft and squishy potato bun! P&C's could use a little polishing on their fried potato fare, but they're still a nice little diner that's using some more modern dishes to breathe some life into a familiar format.

The outside looks a little run down, a true hole in the wall as we say in the States and a lot of those hole in the walls are the best little treasures. That was the case here and we were glad we stopped in. My husband ordered just 3 plain pancakes and his first words out of his mouth were, "I thought they would be bigger than that ". lol...but they were great tasting pancakes. I got the Starlite omelette which had meats and cheese inside and was very good. I ordered the whole wheat toast and onions in my potatoes. I gave my husband a bite of my omelette and he told the waitress it was the best omelette he had ever had. I was hoping that wasn't a hint because I didn't slow down long enough to offer him anymore. But, I did give time a whole piece of toast too. We only had water to drink. Our order was taken and came out fairly fast. We would defiantly go back again for breakfast.
