Service is friendly and prompt and spice level is what someone wanting 'real' Indian would expect. They don't tone it down here to appease the locals, which is very welcome. If you're ordering more than one dish and rice, expect to pack some up to take home with you. The only thing we were surprised by was the Jaljeera. Located in good-sized building along Westville Road, The Pork Shop has a handful of large coolers packed with tons of different sausages (the usual suspects plus cool ones like donair and curry that I'd love to try), many different cuts of pork, a few types of bacon (including the all-to-rare peameal bacon), and beef and chicken for people that aren't s big of fans of pork as I am. Shelves of dry goods to go with your meat line the walls - local jams, honey, sauerkraut, etc. Their website is really great too, listing all of their carnivorous options as well as descriptions of each. Much to my own chagrin, I don't live nearby and don't have a car, so transporting meat is a bit of a hassle/major heath concern. As such, the only meat I've yet tried is my dad's favourite, their marinated capacola pork chops. Luckily for me, it's a damn fine marinade and the pork chops turn out great on the grill - even when my dad, who's infamous for overcooking chops, does them. This may have a bit to do with their hefty thickness, so they're harder to dry out entirely. The flavour is rich and peppery, and I'm guessing the red tint is from paprika since there isn't a spicy hit to them. Get these, grill them up, and openly laugh in the face of those who think beef reigns supreme. On one of my visits back I just may have to load up a cooler with ice packs and smuggle some sausage and bacon back to the city with me. PS. watch out for the horrible potholes in their gravel parking lot.

The sandwich was decent - chunks of actual roasted turkey breast, not sad, slimey slices. It was a bit more minimalist than I'd like, but the good meat and fresh, house-made bread definitely elevated it. The hamburger soup was rich and hearty, with a peppery bite. On a return visit, I was there during breakfast hours. They don't actually have a proper breakfast menu, but I grabbed a glazed cinnamon roll and a coffee. The cinnamon roll was very good - fluffy and fresh, with the added decadence of the icing. The coffee was...what you might expect from an old school bakery in a small town, but it was hot and cheap, so I can't complain.

We arrived on the later side, and there were surprisingly few other hot food vendors at the market, so some things were already sold out. I went with the chili cheese dog, while it was chili nachos for my wife. My split dog had a nice sear from the grill, and was absolutely loaded with a hearty bean and beef chili, and marbled cheese. It was precarious eating, but the bun just made it through to the last bite. My wife's nachos were great for walking and eating. Topped with the same chill, plus jalapenos, diced tomato and bell pepper, and a melty cheese sauce, it was solid little dish! On a return visit at one of their regular weekly locations, the Bluenose Curling Club, I had my choice of their full menu this time. I was dining solo, and went a bit heavy for my meal to try a couple different items. The jerk chicken tacos ($12) were an obvious choice, and I just had to tack on the mac and cheese...in a waffle cone ($6)! Everything was ready quickly, and I was soon in the classy dining environment of my car. The tacos were very generously filled with the seasoned chunks of chicken, and a mix of diced mango, pineapple and red onion - all in soft-shell, wheat tortillas. The jerk seasoning was savoury and had a little hit of spice, although the meat itself was oddly served cold. I'm not sure if it's a choice driven by the cooking infrastructure they have in the trailer, but with the cold salsa and tortillas, it gives the feeling of eating leftovers right out of the fridge, and these tasty bites deserve better. Speaking of the salsa, I loved th bright mix of fruit, and pops of acidity and crunch from the red onion. The mac and cheese waffle cone was a novel little snack, which I eagerly agreed to have topped with the optional bread crumbs and hot sauce. The noodles were firm and cheesy, and the sweetness of the cone was an interesting contrast. Alas, the trademark crispness of the cone suffered under the heat of its delicious contents. When my wife and I found ourselves looking for a quick dinner on early on in the week when fewer restos are open, we made our way over to Maple Cedar. Having come from Ottawa, which in addition to being the national capital of the country is also the shawarma capital, it was a bit weird how few shawarma places there are in the area. The menu leans in a mostly traditional Middle Eastern direction, although they do have pizza, donairs and garlic fingers too. We went with the shawarma ($15) and falafel platters ($15) for dine-in. It was nice to see a flow of customers, despite it being a Tuesday, and our food was in front of us in good time. My shawarma platter had thick pieces of chicken on top of a bed of savoury rice. I would have liked to see a mix of white and dark meat and some crispy bits, but it still had a nice, rich flavour and was moist and tender. Of note, the garlic sauce had more of a aioli-like texture than toum normally does. It tasted fine, but this would anger Lebanese friends of mine. The falafel platter had a generous serving of eight of the crispy chickpea fritters. The platter's composition made it a sort of build-your-own wrap, with sides of tomato, shredded romaine, pickled turnip and tahini with pita. We found the tahini a bit bland, but the falafel were spot on and not at all greasy. A container of baklava ($10) that we took home was flaky, savoury and sweet, and had the most noticeable flavour of orange/rose water I've ever had in baklava. On a return visit, I went for something quick and easy to-go, the large shawarma wrap ($11). After a short wait after a few others, I had my shawarma and classily ate in my car. It had a lovely and crisp exterior from the griddle/sandwich press, plus more traditional ingredients than most shawarma places - chicken, toum, pickled turnips and the clincher - fries. No salad in these bad boys! If they had a better toum, it would be a front runner for the best shawarma wrap that I've had in the province. Maple Cedar may have a broad menu to appeal to a smaller customer base that's less familiar with Middle Eastern food than big markets, but they're still doing right by their culinary origins.

They post their soup schedule on their Facebook every week, and we lucked out because my wife has a nostalgic soft-spot for their soup of the day that day, corn chowder. Soups come with a biscuit or roll, and I doubled down on biscuits. The corn chowder was still piping hot after taking everything home and getting set up to eat. The soup was was creamy and smooth, with pops of sweetness and texture from the corn. The biscuits were buttery and lightly flaky, and while the exterior was a bit more firm and roll-like than a typical biscuit, it didn't detract from it. I had also picked up a loaf of whole wheat bread, which was light, airy and moist - great for sandwiches or on its own! On a return visit, it was another batch of soups - the daily special of clam chowder and the alway available, tomato cheddar. The clam chowder was thick and chock full of bits of clam and perfectly bite-size chunks of potato. I went for the roll this time, and it was light, smooth and great for dipping. My wife's tomato cheddar was a great, simple soup. The namesake flavours were front and centre and it had a silky mouthfeel from the added fat of the cheese, but the sauce didn't break and have actual pools of grease. For dessert, I bought a couple of their iced cinnamon rolls. They were light and airy - definitely head and shoulders above the grocery store ones - and a quick run through the microwave softened that butter/cinnamon/sugar mix wonderfully, without completely liquifying the icing. A Slice of Home is a fantastic addition to both the neighbourhood and the town as a whole, bringing thoughtfully made goods at affordable prices.
