After moving back to the county, a return to Appleseed was inevitable. We swung by for a late lunch, after the hordes of kids amped up from the arcade next door had mostly left. Now that I'm back on the East Coast, I can both trust fish at restaurants more and pay less for it, so I went with the salt cod fish cakes ($17). You know how they say your plate should have lots of different colours of food? Well this was NOT that. While this meal won't win any awards from the Canada Food Guide, it did well by my taste buds. The fish cakes themselves were loosely packed and had a pleasant punch of salty fish, and the green tomato chow brought a contrast of sweet and tangy to the mix. The side of beans had a smattering of what appeared to be bacon in it, and were just the right doneness - not chalky or mushy. Thumbs up! The corn beef hash was a bit greasy, but it was delicious - crisp bits of beef and potato with sauteed onions - it's hard to go wrong here. My wife went for the diner staple, meatloaf ($17). After this meal it became her go-to dish at Appleseed, and I can see why. The generous slab of meatloaf is light and moist, and a slathering of mushroom and onion gravy makes it even more hearty. Ultra-smooth whipped potatoes are a classic pairing, done picture perfect. A medley of veg likely came out of a massive freezer bag, and while a diner fixture, it's one that could be easily replaced with any sort of seasonal veg that is prepared in a better manner than steaming. On our return, I went with the hot chicken sandwich ($17). The roasted chicken was moist and tender, although a little sparse. A hearty slathering of gravy was good, and not too salty. I really appreciated the thick, quality bread that stood up well against the onslaught of gravy. As always, their shoestring fries were spot on. I doubled down on diner decadence and got a strawberry milkshake ($6.50) to drink. Appleseed gets a tip of my cap for using the classic milkshake glass, plus topping it with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. Further bonus points for the extra bit of milkshake coming in the aluminum cup it was mixed in. It was a thick, tasty treat. I still wish Appleseed was in a better location with an interior that called back more to its cozy diner peers rather than strip mall industrial chic, but you can't win 'em all. It's still not easy to get more creative, casual food in Pictou County, so Appleseed is definitely an asset to the local food scene. read more

Great restaurant in New Glasgow. Doesn't look like much on the outside but well worth a visit. Had a large bowl of delicious seafood chowder served with a biscuit. Always great food. I loved the house burger. The service is pretty great too. Servers are attentive but don't overwhelm you. The only thing I have negative to say is I find it pretty loud sometimes, but, it's not a reflection back on the business, there is a fun arcade next door for the kiddos and who wouldn't want a bite to eat afterwards? read more

Had supper here tonight before a show at the Pictou Wellness Centre...great food & excellent service. I had the all day breakfast which was a great choice...scrambled eggs, very tasty sausage patties, lots of nicely spiced home fries & a beautiful buttermilk biscuit My husband enjoyed his pan fried haddock with veggies & French fries. We each had a glass of wine, a limited selection but wonderful choices. For dessert/coffee we chose the eggnog latte...wow! A huge mug & very tasty. His was decaf, mine was regular and both were excellent. Waitstaff were very polite, friendly & engaging. The restaurant was clean with seating well spaced so you weren't listening to multiple conversations. Restrooms were clean & well maintained. I LOVE this place. I've been visiting home for a couple months and have eaten here 4 times. It's my new fave place in town. There's lots of seating in any of the big booths. It is def a modern dinner. Newer aged menu items but still all homemade and ahhhhhmazing desserts ranging from cake to pie to cheesecake. The deserts are cheap too - 4.50$ for a huge slice big enough for two but yummy enough to not want to share. Lots of menu items to choose from. And good luck choosing cuz it's all delicious. I had thanksgiving dinner on a bun and fries - huge portion. Delicious! I've had the Appleseed burger and the jalapeño special burger (my fave). I've had the beet, spinach and goat cheese salad and chicken and that is the best salad ever. And the chicken on top is seasoned and full of flavour. My mom had the fish and chips - again huge portion and she said it was amazing. You're getting so much bang for your buck here. Super nice waitresses too!! Must go! read more

Recently had the opportunity to visit this restaurant. Neat little spot with a games room attached - a great selling point for those looking for an outing with kids! I have had the haddock po' boy twice now - I really like it - breaded fish on a soft bun with a purple coleslaw. Very tasty! They have both standard desserts (i.e. Cake, cheesecake) as well as very unique ones (think warm homemade donuts with filling and then topped with ice cream). My cappuccino, though okay, was not above average. I now have visited twice and I really like the food. The service has been really dependent on who was working - the first time we had a very attentive server; the second time I had to go find cutlery myself. I will be back for that sandwich though! read more

Arriving there was an acceptable wait time to be seated. Our waitresses switched out while we were ordering but they were both very friendly and helpful. Food came a little slow by dinner standards but they were at full capacity and it really only took around 15min. My 2 yr old really enjoyed the chalkboard table to pass the time waiting for food. I really enjoyed my all day breakfast and sampled a bit of my wife's beat green salad which was amazing. My wife actually snuck off with my daughter and ate there again and I was jealous. This is my first review ever on Yelp, and I feel compelled to write because of the negative reviews for the Apple Seed. The atmosphere is great - big open, airy space with high ceilings and a modern vibe. The staff is friendly and helpful. And most importantly, the food was great - come out fast and was very tasty. I had the cajun chicken burger with sweet potato fries, and it was excellent. The coffee drinks were good. One critical note - the Apple Seed is open every day of the week...a critical factor in a town where most restaurants are closed on Sunday. Since I'm staying in time for a little while, I expect I will be coming here often. read more

Went with two families after a hockey game on a Saturday morning. Food was fine and pretty tasty with good portions. Atmosphere is ok but lacking some ambience. Service was poor. The girls were friendly but obviously lacked training. If you order pancakes, bring syrup, if you order a coffee, bring it before you start cleaning the counter. The list goes on. I had two very different experiences at the Apple Seed Diner. Last fall I had an excellent meal and friendly and prompt service. However, my experience last week was less than pleasant. The fish and chips were soggy and lacked flavour. My husband ordered the special poutine of the day, which was very greasy and cold upon arrival. The service was minimal at best. The waitress spent more time checking her phone than speaking with customers. Everyone is entitled to an off day, so we will try the Apple Seed again the next time we're in town. Prett good spot. Lots of clients so i figured it is good. I ordered the monte cristo sandwich with rice. My friend irdered a club sandwich with fries. They gave good sized portions. The rice was ok, nothing special, monte cristo sandwich was pretty good. My friend said the club was pretty good but he didn't get excited over it.
