Brisket lunch plate: got 2 sides and about 3 ounces from the flat. Flavor is kind of bland, dry, and has minor smoke flavor and smell. Bark is non-existent but has good sauces to coat it with. Sonny's is a very family friendly, as well as singles, couples place. The atmosphere is what you expect in a BBQ place, but is still comfortable. We were seated , and the waitress brought our drinks, pronto. The menu is straight forward. I like the BBQ brisket, or BBQ three way plate. Best bbq restaurant I've found in the St Pete area. Pulled chicken and the pork are incredible. We were also very fortunate to have a fabulous waitress. Michelle is a rarity and an asset. She was upbeat, helpful and somehow appeared whenever we needed her without hovering. We go out a lot and have been to some excellent restaurants that we will never return to because of their waitstaff. We will give a restaurant a second visit after an unfortunate experience with a waiter or waitress. After 2 bad encounters we give up. Michelle is a fabulous waitress! I wish she could be cloned! I must say that this is what I remember about Sonny's. I don't live near one and it's been quite a few years since vie been back to one. Large portions, lot's of sauce and real friendly people. If you like barbecue then you will like Sonny's. The people are genuinely nice and will treat you right. We rolled in last night about 20 minutes before closing time with a party of twelve. They didn't bat an eye. They went to work setting up a table for us. It's not the greatest food in the world by any stretch of the imagination. We've had problems at this Sonny's before but our destination was closed and this was close by so we went anyway. The last time we were seated with our drinks and as we gave our order, the server mentioned they were pit of ribs - all kinds of them but luckily they had garlic bread. No advanced notice. This time, we both ordered the "pick 2" combo, both with sliced smoked pork and both with add on ribs. The same. As I'm eating one of my 3 short length ribs, I see my wife eating a rib but notice she's still got 3 ribs on her plate. What? You have 4 ribs, I ask. Yes, plus hers are regular length. When I tell pleasant waiter, definitely suggested I speak to manager. The manager came out with another of my shorter ribs and said that they vary because they go by wait. Well, I may be old school but 3 shorter ribs does not equal 4 longer, same width ribs. Manager stuck with equal wait and I could take extra rib or not. I took it but said I wouldn't be back. Her answer: "That's your choice." Although food and service were good, we'll go to the Sonny's on Tyrone Blvd like we usually do! The manager just didn't get why I was so unhappy. You can get better BBQ, sure, but sometimes you just want to grab a quick bite of sinful deliciousness in a casual sit-down atmosphere. The booths are big and comfy too, and they always seem very friendly and fast with the service. Personally, the one item on the menu which I cannot get enough of, and which probably pushes Sonny's from a 3.5 star to 4-star rating, is the corn nuggets. I could easily make a meal of these alone. They are little dollops of creamed corn, battered and deep fried within a crunchy shell. OMG. Forget the whole Chick-Fil-A gay marriage debate, I want to begin a domestic partnership with these corn nuggets! As a male, I'd even be willing to be the "wife" in such a relationship. We ordered Sonnys on Doordash and usually when we order its great no problems and amazing food. Well this time someone stole our food before our driver arrived which usually no big deal not their fault people suck. But instead of being professional they refused to remake our food that we already paid for and my Dash driver had to say she wouldnt leave until they did (which im thankful for cuz what the heck?) and when our order did arrive every box was smashed and the straws were bent. I like Sonny's. Its a kid friendly environment, and nice and casual. They have the best mac n cheese ever, and their fries - YUM. I always get the salad bar when Im there. Thankfully this place puts their nutritional information on line because BBQ is a hard place to do on a diet. The entire menu is delicious. To eat low calorie I had the roasted chicken with 2 sides of veggies. My husband preferred their dry rub over the sauce which is unusual for him. My review of Sonny's is long overdue. I eat there at least once a week. Here's why I gave Sonny's four stars: 1. Their barbecue sauce is delicious. 2. I'm not sure, but I think they may sprinkle a little bit of crack on the ribs; I can't stop eating them. 3. The service is always very good. 4. The food is ridiculously inexpensive. 5. They have a full bar. 6. The salad bar is always clean fresh and constantly being replenished. While it is not the best barbecue in the world, it's always consistent. It is the same experience and the same quality of food every time. Plus they're fast and efficient. Food served fast but everything was cold. Not even warm. Pulled pork sandwich had huge burnt chunks in it. Very hard to eat. Also flavor was very gross. Green beans were disgusting just tasted old. The coleslaw was the absolute worst I've ever had. And it's so cold I was so uncomfortable. Judging by all of the other reviews with the same complaints, they're struggling and in need of help. I'm thinking the food May have been bad because my stomach is killing me. Our server was very strange and unsettling. Cool! We were pleasantly surprised by this place :) It's definitely a lower-cost restaurant, but the service and quality of food was not bad at all. The drinks were large, and the salad bar was extensive. It had tons of toppings that I wouldn't normally expect on a salad. I won't say all of the items were great quality, but average for the price. We were all pleased with the quality of our meat dishes (from brisket to smoked chicken & pulled pork), even if they weren't piled that high. The plates came with several side dishes, which definitely filled us up. The green beans and BBQ beans were both good. We definitely filled ourselves up and had leftovers to take home. Sonny's Barbeque is good place but misses that down home southern hole-in the wall place charm. I guess that is where you go when items are mass produced and involved in a chain. With that said, I like Sonny's the food is always consistent, the staff is always friendly, and the environment is always clean. They do reach for that charm I expect in their woody interior and booths. I guess sometimes I expect them to reverse the damper when cooking and give the inside that overwhelming barbeque flavor in the air. I like their sliced pork plates for lunch. It comes with two sides and usually is plenty but not too much to put you totally down for a nap when you return to work. The one really cool thing about Sonny's is drink sizes; everything is large and they almost always offer you a "to-go" cup refill. They do offer a salad bar which can be added to a meal or a stand-alone. It usually looks fresh. You know what you are getting at Sonny's. Maybe not the greatest BBQ in the world, but it's pretty darn good. Yardbird is excellent IMHO. Love the beans, the fries are great, sliced pork is lean, man I'm getting hungry now! Yes it's a chain but I must admit they all run on the very clean, very efficient side. Never have to wait long for refills or re-orders and the help is plenty nice. I think this one on Park Blvd is particularly well run as is the one right of 75 in Gainesville. This is by far the BEST BBQ ever!! I live in TN and we don't have BBQ this good. The smoke flavor is JUST right. The atmosphere is fun and friendly. They have all the classic BBQ favorites. Mine is the BBQ chicken all white meat with baked beans, cole slaw and garlic bread with lots of sweet BBQ sauce...yummy! Still waiting for service after 10 minutes. When should I say it's bad. My son-in-law hunted down a waitress. She mis-ordered from the kitchen three times. The food was good except for the not fresh salad bar. Bathrooms had been trashed. The waitress was either new or a trainee. If she was in training a tag saying that would have put us on her side and we would have helped. No management of expectations at all. If we were added to her station or her area, then she could have said so and given us an I'm sorry. She was obviously embarrassed. It will be awhile before we go again. Used to be a big fan, then stopped going, but we heard the new menu was good. It is, but the service was horrible. Advice to Sonny's management: Wake up. read more

I get here at 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon. I am solo. I wait a couple of minutes at the podium before a bartender comes over and seats me. I peruse the menu and decide what I want. A table of 4 is seated while I do this. After deciding, I pick up the newspaper I had brought and begin to read while waiting for the waitress to take my order. I make it through the entire first section. I glance over at the table of 4 that arrived after me. They have their drinks already. I still haven't seen my waitress yet. I look at my cell phone. Sonny's BBQ is a decent place to get some Q if you're needing a fix. It's a chain so of course there are some who might say it isn't all that. But in a city where BBQ isn't as popular as it should be... Sonny's comes through with the Q when you need it. Went in tonight and I ordered the pulled brisket. I've never had a problem with the brisket at Sonny's before and it's always good. When it came out there was more fat on it than meat! So when our waitress asked how things were I pointed it out to here and all she said was I'll make it right. So a couple of minutes later she came back with a plate full of brisket with very little fat! I was surprised that she didn't blink an eye about it. So what I was worried would be a less than stellar meal turned into a really good one. I understand that meat has fat and I normally don't complain but she certainly made it right. Sonny's is kind of hit or miss. It is usually it is good. But sometimes it can be super dry. I was there 2 weeks ago. and it was really tasty. Then I was just there last night and everything was tough and dry. They do have a great selection of sauces. As far as being clean it is a very clean place. Worst takeout experience ever. I used DoorDash to order and it was my most regrettable order ever. I ordered the turkey with sweet potatoes and a rack of ribs. I received turkey with a baked potato and a half a rack of ribs. The ONLY reason I'm giving this place 1 star is because the waitress was very friendly and efficient. I ordered the brisket and links sandwich...the meat was barely room temperature, the jalapeno links tasted odd (not rotten or anything, just odd) and the onions tasted and smelled old. Went there around 7:30 Friday Jan 12, 2018. Chedder's was packed and thought I'd get some sliced pork instead. Have a pork and pork special for $8-. The pulled pork was all mushy, rare cooked, and pre-sauced. Did not look like picture. Very salty also. The slice pork was sliced extra thin and was mushy also. Could of passed for ham......... We have been going to this location, as well as the Tyrone Blvd. location for many years. However, the past 3 visits between the 2 locations have been very disappointing. The quality of food has declined (food is never hot anymore - garlic bread and fries are barely warm and are very soft, not crispy like they should be, kind of seemed like they've been sitting around for awhile), portions have gotten smaller (if you want 2 pieces of garlic bread, that used to be standard, you'll have to ask...twice at least). On our most recent visit with friends, 2 orders were messed up, and our server argued with us and said "that's what I wrote down", so basically that is what you ordered...not possibly that she made a mistake. Please give the customer the benefit of the doubt and don't argue over a side dish mix up. One person specifically ordered the lunch portion (which they also offer at dinner time), and when the bill came she was charged full dinner price (3rd mistake of our order). And now the food is served on metal trays with a thin piece of paper as a liner, instead of a regular plate like they used to have. Huge failure when you're trying to eat food with barbecue sauce. You can only imagine what happens to the thin paper when it gets soggy from the food. Yep, you end up getting a mouthful with your barbecue! Who's bright idea was this? And I'm wondering if those metal trays get washed and sanitized like plates should be?? Kind of grossed me out. I have noticed this same type of decline consistently over the past year, and at different locations, so I can only assume that this is the "new" Sonny's that's here to stay. Never have I had such terrible service at this Sonnys before. My waitress was Jeanette and she was so rude. I have no idea why I was treated so terribly. I would be telling her my re order and she would be like okay give me a couple minutes and walk away before I was even done telling her everything. I ordered the all you can eat baby back ribs which is 18.99 and I only re ordered a couple of times but it took so long for her to come back to us. She would only hear a couple things we asked and would forget a lot of things. It seemed like we were bothering her every time we asked for something. I was so angry. Went here for lunch before heading to TPA to board my plane home. Was ok......kinda reminded me of a Famous Dave's, which we have in Michigan. Coleslaw and pulled pork was good.....but my fries were old and cold. Service was good, waitress took care of us without being intrusive.
