Dr Joseph, to include his staff, really cares about your health very much. They go the extra step to understand your mental health condition so you can be treated as you as an individual should be treated. Dr Joseph has many years of practice that gives him a great benefit to determine what you can really work for your condition. I have seen many doctor's in this Orlando area due to my extreme PTSD; Dr Joseph is the VERY BEST. I do have a Service Dog that is really a good enhancement to his treatment. I would not consider any other doctor in Orlando. He would be worth the drive, you are near his office. STAY AWAY FROM this place I was going to Advanced Pyschieatric Group close to hwy 50 on Orange Ave. They just give you anything with out really knowing what you really need, they just do not take the time to understand. Then they try to get you to do talk therapy there to -- that's a no-no, they should be separate organizations, not say company. I have waited over an hour so see my Doctor, if you are late, you have reschedule -- even though they are always late. They have no consideration to you as a patient. While Dr Joseph takes the time to determine what would probably assist you get back to a more normal life. His staff really cares for you. He spends more time with you during the initial session to confirm what you need, based on notes from the referring counselor and what he hears from you. First of all, I went to Dr. Joseph in 1997, seeking help and he gave me a diagnosis, but he really didn't want me to get caught up in a label, which I understand. He gave me some advice and meds and they were a tremendous help. In fact, my life finally felt normal after many years of pain. But I had to move away and was diagnosed with something similar, but not exactly what he had said so my meds were different and I was up and down for many years. Anyway, in 2017, I moved back to Longwood and knew I wanted to go back to Dr. Joseph, but I lived about 45 min to 1 hour from his office so my GP said they could prescribe my meds. Well, later my GP and I agreed I really needed to start seeing a psychiatrist again. There was only so much he could do and I was struggling. I found someone else that I went to for 5 years then I had a TERRIBLE experience with her and she has the worst ratings (Center for Psychiatry: Dr. Naomi Jones - just google her stay away from her) and if you want to know the full story google her name and read my review. So back to Dr. Joseph I went. I almost cried because he was like a breath of fresh air. I felt totally safe with him and really wished I hadn't wasted my time with the other office just to save myself a few minutes. Even though he runs a very busy office you would NEVER know it. There's never a wait more than 10 minutes or so, he never overbooks appointments, the office staff runs like a well oiled machine. They are efficient, helpful, and courteous. EVERYONE shows you they care. He is one in a million. But after a year or more he and I agreed I would try once again to try to find someone closer. But I was unsuccessful in finding someone reputable and close. Having been to 2 other psychiatrists, I can say hands-down his appointment was the least thorough, quickest intake appointment I have ever had. I was the on the phone for a total of 15 minutes, 7 of that spent with Dr. Joseph, 5 of that actually talking. My last psychiatrist had to stop taking outpatients due to his increased workload during Covid, so I did my research and found that Dr. Joseph was supposed to be "the best in Orlando." I was profoundly disappointed with my experience with him. He was extremely quick to ask me what medications I want and needed, during an INTAKE appointment where he should have been DIAGNOSING me, not asking me what I wanted to take. As a person with GAD and MDD, this was so jarring, that I asked for a refill of my current antidepressant as I was running low, got off the phone and immediately looked for a new psych. I did not feel once that Dr. Joseph had any concern for my mental health or my past experiences with antidepressants. If you are looking for a quick refill on medicine, don't even waste your time. I used Dr. Joseph because he was recommended by a family member. Bad decision. On my first visit it seemed like a nice office. Dr. Joseph listened to my issues and prescribed medication. Each additional visit was 3 minutes- 5 at best. If I wanted to try a new medication he would add it never take anything away. Almost 3 medications! My last visit- I refused to come back ever again- I told him I didn't think the medication was working he said ok I'll see you in three month. Obviously just looking for a paycheck. read more

I've been seeing him for three years now, and I can honestly say he's helped me far beyond all the other psychiatrists I've been before (and I've seen an array.) The staff is very friendly and accommodates the best way they can. I'm guessing because they're in a medical park and right next to the hospital, a lot of patients get sent to him, so make sure you plan your appointments ahead of time. Don't try to do a walk-in. I love seeing Dr. Joseph. He is the 4th Doctor I've seen in the past 5 years, and I've been seeing him for almost 3 years. He should not be the first doctor you see, in my opinion. You need a more intensive mental health therapist or the like to help fully diagnose you. I was fully diagnosed prior to and then recommended to him. He used that information and then his own initial testing to prescribe me medication. His staff is always helpful with making new appointments or rescheduling if need be. You know what I love about this office? They're FAST! After the first consultation visit and once everything seems to be working appropriately, the check-up visits are such a cinch! I can always make an appointment at a convenient time for myself (which is usually 7:45am since I have to trek back across town to be at work in Lake Mary by 9) and I know I will be in and out within 5-10 minutes! In addition to that, Dr. Joseph listens and answers questions very thoroughly. If I feel like I have a problem with my medication, I know he will give me the appropriate medical response and either make changes or ease my concerns. To anyone considering Dr. Joseph, especially those seeking mental health assistance for the first time, please read! There is currently a major pharmacy chain refusing to fill controlled substances prescribed by this doctor. Dr. Joseph does not check vitals or provide any counsel or evaluation. I wish I knew what I was getting into before my first visit. After experiencing a traumatic event I was concerned for my well being and sought help from a mental health specialist for the first time. Dr. Joseph's excellent online ratings and qualifications seemed to be a match with my family history and current situation. Before I could get into the details of why I came to his office, he stopped me from speaking any further, informing me he doesn't counsel. 10 minutes after our introduction I left the office with ADHD and anxiety prescriptions. Follow up sessions were no more than 5 minutes. I honestly thought the ADHD medication was helping my depression, but now know I was only getting high from a misdiagnoses. Over many years the underlying issue for my visit was never dealt with and I eventually fell into isolation, severe alcoholism(family history) and dependence on the prescriptions. I'm 9 months alcohol free and although nervous to speak up, I feel obligated to help prevent something like this from happening to anyone else. I tried to give him a chance. I really truly did. I have a complex mental health history and co-morbidities. In my first visit I advised him EXACTLY what medications I have tried and failed in the past. I had advised him who my previous psychiatrist was and what he prescribed, and that I was stable on those medications for years until I lost my health insurance and had to stop being seen and come off meds. First thing he does is deny one of my medications because it's a C3. People who have PTSD do benefit from medications like clonazapam. There is plenty of literature to support this. Doctor Joseph REFUSES to write benzodiazepines. I said ok. I tried his way. Him writing me RANDOM medication after RANDOM medication that typical isn't used to treat anxiety or PTSD. I tried the medications. They did not work. I have seen this man for 5 months in a row, and he has not budged on changing my medications to match what I was stabilized on for years. A month ago I was hospitalized. After discharge I asked the facility to fax my progress notes to the doctor so he could REVIEW THEM PRIOR to my next appointment. He had over 30 days to review the information!!! I show up for my appointment. My chart hadn't been touched and if I had not told him he would not have opened it and looked. He started throwing around 4-5 different medication names to me. I told him I had no reason to take any of them OR I had already told him I tried and failed them. He mentioned one more to me and I agreed to try it. He looked frazzled and was crossing things out in my chart and trying to remember what we had just discussed... He hands me my prescription. Surprise, surprise instructed to come back in a month: I'm so irritated I left. By the time I got to my pharmacy the new medication he JUST LITERALLY TOLD ME he was starting me on was not on the script! When I called his office back, IMMEDIATELY, they said they would need to speak with him and see what he meant to prescribe. I get a call today from his office manager saying "he said you have to come in for an appointment" IM DONE. I was just in there literally 2 days ago! He said "either you come for the appointment for find another doctor" I said I will CERTAINLY find another doctor who is not a dangerous moron who will actually take more than 3 minutes per appointment and TAKE THE TIME to read my f*cking chart after I was inpatient. I have never seen such an unprofessional doctor in my entire life and I will never pay his cheap ass another red cent. my pharmacist said he was playing Russian Roulette with my medications and could have caused me to have seizures and other adverse reactions the way he was prescribing these medications. Do not waste your time!!!!! He had a sign hanging in his office about "unsavory reviews" from disgruntled patients and to ignore them and give him a fair review. I came in feeling low and seeking help. I got prescribed lamictal at a starting dose of 150 mg, in addition to multiple other new drugs, one of which had made my condition worse previously (scary by itself). It's important to note that I am also a teenager, an age that typically should start at a lower dose than those of adults. After a second opinion due to concern with taking so many medications at once, this is worse than we had initially thought. This drug can produce a rash that can become life-threatening, even if titrated slowly. I have been titrated and have developed the early stages of the rash, which I will hopefully recover from after discontinuing the medication for a while as this is the only way to treat it. Dr. Joseph did not even mention this maybe lethal side effect, and as I have eczema I would never have questioned it until it was to a point requiring hospitalization and hard to treat. I was not made aware of this side effect, so the likely result would be emergency rooms, especially considering the STARTING dose of 150 mg. My other psychiatrist started with 25 mg for a week to 25 in the morning and 25 at night for another week, so we were able to catch the starting signs. With 150 mg starting, in conjunction with a medley of medications, I fear it would have erupted and developed quickly and perhaps sprouting in Stevens-Johnson syndrome (look it up it's pretty bad). I would potentially be in danger of my life if I had followed his advice. He also disregarded my mother's questions and past experiences, basically telling her to be quiet. Rude and seems to be inept in this field. Maybe he should've listened to our concerns. Even disregarding this horrible experience, his office seemed off in our previous visits for a drug we knew I was stabilized on for another condition. He had papers around that said that people who "just wanted drugs" that he would not give them posted "fake reviews" to make him look bad. After going through this process, I have confidence that a majority of these reviews are in actuality truthful recountings of negative experiences. It seems to me like he is trying to discredit any negativities surrounding his practice. Along with this, the process of appointments was not great. However, we stayed because my main reason for going in the past was a medication that I had been on successfully for a while, so no need for new information or medications. The patients meet with the doctor for 10 minutes maximum and they come out with prescriptions. It seems quite rushed. He does not make a connection with the patients' condition as a whole, he hears one side effect and writes another drug down. My new psychiatrist knows more about me after one session than I believe Sonny Joseph would have in years. She had an extensive pre-visit survey for me so she could enter the relationship with existing knowledge. And to further, she talked me through the information on my chart for over an hour during our appointment, took questions and explained everything in an easy way to understand. This seems to be a more appropriate approach than to tell my mom to "forget everything she thinks she knows". Also, I saw Mary, the nurse practitioner, as often as the doctor, if not more. read more

ABOUT THE DOCTOR: Dr. Sonny Joseph has alway listened to my concerns and needs regarding my mental health. He is very knowledgeable and displays a genuine concern. I have and will continue to give reference to my friends, family and others when they ask about a good, qualified psychiatrist that will be able to treat them with the utmost qualified and quality care. WAIT TIMES: The wait times upon checking in are actually really good compared to my other doctors that I regularly visit. I am almost always seen right on time for my appointment, and rarely wait more than 10 minutes. The longest wait I have had is between 20-30 minutes and that has only been 2-3 times over the last five years. STAFF: The staff has always been VERY accommodating regarding me calling in to advise I will be late or that I need to change an appointment. I also feel the need to mention that they have always been very friendly and respective. IN CONCLUSION: Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. I believe the majority of negative reviews of this doctor by former patients are due to them being "drug-seekers," abusers of their medications, or not truly needing the medications they are requesting, which they are then denied.
