The green beans and mashed potatoes with cream gravy were just fine. So was the roll. The steak was mostly tender, savory, and hearty. There was a wall of people waiting to be seated. We received a beeper that would tell us when we could be seated. We waited for 45 minutes and the four of us we were seated at a round table in the bar. Our servers name was Corina, she was amazing, she was the bar tender for the entire restaurant and was the server for 4 tables in the bar. She took our order for drinks and our appetizer and entrees. We all wanted the fried Catfish, however we found out they were completely out of it! And Friday they would have a shipment. My husband and I ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables. My husband ordered the baked potato with coleslaw . Our friends ordered the same. The meatloaf was delicious and the sides were tasty. We really enjoyed the quiet setting in the bar. There were lots of tables toward the entrance, and the people waiting for a table spilled out by the diners. So we were happy to sit in the bar where it was quiet and more intimate. I visited on a Monday evening, around 5pm. That's usually the time us old folks eat. I had no issue getting a table. Promptly seated, I ordered a beer and my dinner. The menu is a good mix, something for everyone. I ordered the Chili Rellenos. Of course I ordered that. Hey, when in Rome..... My meal was served quick and hot. Waiting a minute to cool was definitely in the cards. No problem, I had my beer, salsa and chips to occupy me while the steam settled. After a bit, I dug in. First fork was the rice. Oh, was that rice ever good! The only problem was that there wasn't enough. I suggest that you order a side of that glorious grain. Fantastic! The refried beans, well, were ok, but just ok. The Hatch greenies, as you'd expect, were outstanding and very flavorful. I ordered them Christmas style, with green and red sauce. Spicy sausage link with cheese, brisket, slaw and potato salad for him; ham and turkey meat for me with the beans (warned that they'd be talking later) and slaw. Each had a big slice of bread + butter and a sugar cookie. Drinks of lemonade and unsweetened tea were all you could drink and came as part of the meal. There are canned sodas and bottled Coca Cola for an extra price. I saw there was fresh coffee in the pot. All food was very delicious, fresh made, and served generous sized portions. We had so much leftovers we have a good start on tonight's dinner/supper. On the television was the Western/INSP channel with High Chaparral playing. Blast from the past. I immediately felt the "home town" vibe of this special restaurant & coffee shop. The staff was so friendly & welcoming that I immediately felt right at home. Had a "BLT" & asked them to add a fried egg & they happily obliged. it was simply excellent & brought back vivid memories of my youth from a bygone era when food was prepared with love , caring & pride in serving the very best to the community they served. A little about the proprietors: before "Sam" Samantha & Kurt started this wonderful eatery & coffee house, it was a Mexican restaurant called Fred's that had proudly served the Fort Sumner community for 47 years. So the history of friendly service & outstanding fare literally is permeated within. Now for the sad part. I discovered that this was their last day open! After 4 years, surviving thru the Covid restrictions, Sam & Kurt are have to close due to illness. It saddens the heart that Fort Sumner, NM will lose this hidden gem. If I lived here, it would have definitely been my "go to" place for everything. Thank you so much Sam & Kurt for providing the friendliest & definitely the tastiest place ever.
