Cute little soda shop with delicious shakes and root beer floats. Bringing back the good 'ol days.

So I need to preface this review with one major caveat: I'm not that crazy about fudge nor brittle…read more This matters in a brittle and fudge shop. Brittle seems like the candy I'll be lightly chewing, against doctor's orders, when I get my first pair of dentures, and fudge never comes close to satiating my cacao addiction, it's never dark or rich enough, it's like shoveling chocolate flavored sugar into my jowls. So when I entered this place, hoping to bring home candy for the fam, I was kinda dismayed. But the owner, Mike, was just so darned friendly, I was compelled to dig deeper. Oh yes, Mike, do tell me about your impressive gingerbread house, how did you make those marshmallows look like snow? Yes, Mike, I'll take a sample of your biscochito brittle (honestly goooood). Mike, is this a Harry Potter candy table? Why, now this, Mike, this is something that would definitely appeal to my Potterhead kiddo. Why yes, Mike, I'll take some of those Bertie Botts beans. And she'll appreciate my bribery. To summarize: I like candy shops, and it takes a certain personality, a Mike, to make such a shop win. Visit this place if only to enjoy a conversation with this Mike guy, learn about how his wife insisted on the Potter table, how his son is excelling at school, these kinds of things that remind us that small businesses with devoted owners can remove us from our stressed-out everyday existence and deliver down home conversation that simply sticks with you, like the calories in those biscochito brittle bites.

We got a green chile brittle and a red chile fudge. Fudge had a bite and brittle was to die for. The prices were reasonable and it always feels good to support local. Will definitely stop by next time we're walking the plaza.

If you're making the drive between Santa Fe and Roswell, this is realistically the only stop--and…read morehonestly, it's a pretty solid one. Penny's has that classic roadside diner charm, complete with the shiny silver exterior and that satisfying old-school diner door. It leans into nostalgia in the best way, like you accidentally pulled into a time capsule somewhere along a desert highway. Inside was clean and well-kept, and the staff were attentive and friendly without being over the top--exactly what you want when you're road-weary and hungry. Food-wise, the burger hit the spot and the tots were crispy (always a win). Simple, classic diner food done right. A couple of knocks: the bathroom was just okay, nothing terrible but not great either. And the soda... not good. It had a strange flavor, almost like the lines hadn't been changed in a while--definitely stick with water or something bottled. Overall, it's not a destination restaurant, but for where it's at, it absolutely delivers. A reliable, nostalgic pit stop that does the job well. Worth the stop? Yes. Just skip the soda.

Finding Penny's is like striking gold (note: this review applies to their Yampa, Colorado, location…read moretoo). Either stretch of road is remote and food options are few and far between. When you see the lights are on, it's a relief. From what I understand, they're able to stay open 24 hours because of a contract with Big Rail, which keeps train crews fed and honestly, the rest of us travelers benefit too. I love that the choo-choos take care of their people while providing a service to anyone passing through. It's a cozy, welcoming stop when you need it most. The kind of place that makes a long drive feel less lonely. In the instance I'm in those parts of New Mexico or Colorado, Penny's is my go-to. Five stars!
