Cute little gift area to browse in...restaurant decor was fine, nothing exceptional. Menu was very extensive but we felt like Mexican. I ordered chicken fajitas and my hubby got 2 tamales, pork & chicken. My fajitas came on the usual hot skillet, but it wasn't sizzling or steamy. Some pieces were stuck to the skillet and there wasn't much onion or pepper. It kinda looked like leftover from lunch maybe. My 4 corn tortillas were all stuck together and I finally salvaged 1 while tearing up the other 3. Sour cream came in a tube and guac was not fresh guac. So the fajitas were less than good. I had ordered the beans and pozole side which was available for .99 extra. The pozole was really good ! I should've just ordered a bowl of that! My hubby liked his tamales very much, however. Late lunch/early dinner in Santa Rosa on our way to Santa Fe. The Silver Moon is easy to access just off of I-40. This is our 3rd or 4th time at the Silver moon in as many years. The restrauant is a little tired but the food is good. I ordered chili releno's (cheese) with red sauce. It comes with brown beans and pozole. I enjoyed the meal. Jan ordered the Mexican dinner. The manager or owner not sure, does not exhibit that small town charm. The wait staff does but definitely not the manager/owner. 7 of us stopped in to have dinner. First we asked if we could sit outside since there was an open air patio with numerous empty tables and chairs. It would have been a perfect night to sit outside and drink and eat. (We would have spent a fortune there that night if the would have let us sit outside.) We were told "No, the outside area is closed" So they crammed us into a booth. We asked politely if we could put a chair at the end of the table so one side would not be squished with 4 people. They said "No, we need this walkway" We said can't we move the little table across the way? That way there is still a walkway but you just have to veer a little bit. The answer was "No". Our waitress was wonderful but her boss did not have that small town charm we were hoping to see. It was like going to a restaurant in a Big City. Unyielding and a bit cranky. The food is good the waitress was wonderful, but management needs to be a bit friendlier. I would normally give 5 stars, but the attitude of the manager brings things down. So much that the next night the 7 of us tried to eat there again but were greeted with "the outside is closed and you're gonna have to wait a long time" Pretty short and curt. Service was nonexistent. Stood in front of the hostess desk while the cashier cashed out everyone that was in line... I was good with that, but then walked up 4 more checks. Ok I looked at stuff there by the stand. Everyone is done but instead of seating me she cuts up fudge. Really? Then 2 more checks come up. I'm ready to leave. Finally she seats me and the couple that just walked in. I sit down and wait, then watch the couple that came in after get their drink order in. Still I wait. The whole front of house seemed to be manned by teenagers, and not teenagers who really knew their business... nor seemed to care. "What kind of potato with the fish and chips?" ‍ I asked for a side of mayo with the sandwich and this boy assures me he will see to it personally. Twice. I got two sides of ranch instead, no tarter sauce. The fish portion was HUGE, I will say. The wait was LONG. A cute little roadside diner and one of three non franchise restaurants in Santa Rosa. The ambiance was quaint and the staff was attentive and courteous. We picked Silver Moon for the roadside diner vibe. The evening we went it was busy and the staff seemed thin. The food was average for the most part but there were simple things that made our experience lacking. One most entrees came with with beans and pazole which both were excessively salted. This place is absolutely foul. Cockroaches everywhere, poor staff treatment, the food has no flavor, and the ambiance of this establishment is utterly disappointing. The chips are ALWAYS stale and the boss/OWNER is a very rude man, he talks to the staff like they are dogs and belittles them. We had a nice relaxing visit at this place. I had the Santa Rosa enchiladas with beans, while it tasted good and fresh I didn't appreciate a single whole chicken piece in my enchilada, I had to cut it up and it was just one hunk wgixh was weird because you have to roll an enchilada. So it felt like no love was put into the dish. I enjoyed the beans and pozole. My husband enjoyed his chicken tacos but they didn't cone with any sides so we added beans to his dish at a separate cost. We like sparking water with our meals and they brought out bottled San peligrino at $4.95 each ouch. Next time we'll ask first . We had fried cheesecake which tasted fresh but there was a lot of tortilla around it prior to frying so it was more tortilla dough then cheesecake we won't reorder. The good, the fish in the fish and chips. The bad...we upgraded to onion rings and sweet potato fries, one on each of our meals. They arrived cold, but we couldn't complain to our waitress as she disappeared immediately after serving us. When we waited 5 minutes to get drink refills, I finally went to the hostess who brought us more to drink. Also bad, they could not cook a burger medium rare, they said they had to cook them to temperature so it came medium well. The worst was obviously the waitress. As we finished she stopped to drop off the check. we were done at this time, she said she'd be back. Next time I saw her she was sitting at a table with another waitress talking. I finally went back to the hostess for a to go box and pay the check. My wife and I owned a cafe for many years, so I usually tip at least 20% for even moderate service. My one rule is once I'm obviously done with my meal, put down my utensils, I start deducting 1% for every minute I have to wait for the server to stop by and check and usually offer desert. After 15 minutes I went to the hostess the second time for the to go box and to pay the check and feel I was extremely generous in leaving 10% on the check. This is a very small place, 15 tables or so and I think we met the owner when we arrived, but she left shortly before our meals arrived, after which point out waitress was more concerned about talking you other workers than her other customers. read more

Was very excited to try this spot since it's a historic landmark. When we entered right away, we were greeted and seated. It was quiet the night that we went. There was a regular up near the cash register that the waitress chatted with often on. We got glasses of water right away and I ordered a margarita and the other person in my ordered a soda. The margarita was really good, but it was extremely expensive. I think it was around $11. It was just a basic margarita. The waitress took our orders next I ordered a bowl of green chili and a tortilla and the other person in my party ordered a hamburger and fries. The food came right away. I think it pre-prepared in the microwave area or service area. My green chili had potatoes in it that were from a can I believe since they were very similar to what were in a can from the grocery store but they green chile had good flavor, but was kind of lackluster on the rest of ingredients. It did hit the spot since I had been traveling for five hours and I was hungry. The tortilla was very similar to what you would purchase in a grocery store, but it came out warm and was folded into quarters so it was easy to use to dip into the stew. Overall, the meal was mediocre. The service was not the most friendly, but the waitress did keep attention to the table and kept checking back in with us. She did bring chips and salsa a little bit later on I don't know if she had forgotten but we had asked her if we could have some and she said of course I'm working on it. The gift shop area is right when you enter and is of course right when you leave when you pay. It has a very tourista feel with many items similar to what you might find along the Nogales border, but has a lot of neat items if you need to pick up an item to commemorate your visit along route 66. I won't be returning to this location for a lot of different reasons. I felt it was extremely expensive. I would've appreciated a smile from one of the employees after my long day traveling and their food just wasn't enough to make me want to come back. But it was a cute place and in a pinch if you're really hungry and you needed a diner to sit down and warm up or cool off it's definitely a place to pull in and stop off. read more

I'm only giving one star just so that I can write a review. The folks in this restaurant are rude. I have never experienced service much worse than this. Last time I was here the food was good but I'm not certain how it will come out this time. I'm traveling with a small Chihuahua that typically eats with me at restaurants. She sits very quietly in the chair next to me and minds her own business. However, the elderly hostess on this particular occasion made a big deal of bringing my dog in for dinner. As a traveler what am I supposed to do lock my dog in the car? So we got mixed messages on this particular occasion. The elderly hostess rudely spoke very loudly saying my dog is not a service animal, she made loud comments, "does she think we're stupid?" Then she came to our table and very loudly became confrontational with me. I got up at left. This is not my first visit to this establishment but it most certainly is my last. The ambience of the hole in the wall is crappy. They are not animal friendly at all. Stay away if you're traveling with your fur baby. read more

New Mexican food and American food (burgers). We ordered the chile rellenos. Chips and salsa were good, a bit of ancho chile heat. The stuffed chilis were good, as were the accompanying pozole (hominy with sauce) and pintos. The red sauce is less fun than the green sauce. These cause $14 where we've paid $20 in other restaurants. The food squeaks the four stars, as the service was harried. Some of the tables are fairly small, and the kit that they put on the tables makes them smaller. There is an interesting gift shop adjacent. We tend to eschew such stuff but actually found a couple of items. And for Starbucks addicts, there is Starbucks coffee here-- you can get your fix. There were a mix of locals and Route 66 tourists here. Although Santa Rosa is a bit run down, there's lots of history there, a gateway south (Alamagordo and White Sands/Las Cruces) and west to Albuquerque. This place tries to have soul and fun and the food was a good value. We'd go back. read more

After eating fast food on the road this national landmark was a treat. I had the Huevos Rancheros and husband had biscuit and sausage gravy platter. $4 for sbux drip coffee and $3 for tea but we gladly paid it to sit down and eat a meal with silverware. Silver Moon Cafe is an oasis in the desert!! My review for Silver Moon is based on other Route 66 restaurants, cafes and diners. It's definitely 5 star worthy in that category! It's been updated and remodeled to a comfortable, bright and fresh cafe that offers both Mexican and American favorites. Our service was friendly and efficient in a very crowded restaurant. We ordered the pick your own combo and it was perfect portions, came out quickly and was absolutely delicious. The tamale melted in my mouth, the enchilada was thick with cheese and the taco was crisp and loaded with filling. Instead of rice and refried beans, they serve hominy and black beans, the perfect accompaniments. Highly recommend for a delicious Route 66 stop! read more

This is an iconic historical landmark so they are getting grace. We stayed next door at the Hampton Inn and were traveling with our small dog(7lbs). We called and asked if we could sit on the patio with our dog and were told only if our dog was a service dog. So my husband undeterred called and asked the manager if we could sit on the patio with our small dog. She said so sorry the patio is closed today. . So we ordered takeout. DO NOT eat at this FAMILY restaurant if you care about decent treatment by management. After driving ALL day, tired & starving, my aging mother and myself walked in at *9:24* to split a light dinner and a drink. Looking around the restaurant people had JUST sat down and were currently ordering. We were told we could not eat or drink in the restaurant. Take out ONLY (to our hotel room?!?!) Zero compassion. Keep in mind, there was not another OPEN restaurant anywhere near and the manager knew this. THEY CLOSE AT 10:00!!!! It was only 9:24 on a SATURDAY NIGHT. We were completely denied. At the same time she, the manager (which is an overstatement), and the bartender were stuffing their faces and drinking and flatly didn't want to stop eating to serve hungry patrons. Not the way a business is run. Completely disgusted and hungry we left with her yelling at us that she didn't want to serve us. I'm appalled and we went to bed hungry. Do not support this lady.
