Jolly Cone Drive-In - good nachos and tater tots

Jolly Cone Drive-In

Stopped by Jolly Cone On The Current and ordered two cheeseburgers, fries, and root beers. The…read moreservice was quick, which was a plus, but the food was underwhelming. The cheeseburgers were average at best, with dry buns that didn't seem very fresh. The fries were decent, but nothing standout. Overall, the prices felt inflated compared to the quality and portion sizes. Based on that, we decided to skip dessert and head elsewhere for something more consistent and reliable.

TLDR: If you're driving by and you want something better than McDonald's or Subway, then this is…read morethe best place to stop!!! I drive from TN to MO often and I have stopped here many times when I am coming through van buren, specifically for a banana split or a cherry sprite which are both great. The food is good and worth the stop! This little joint is the most authentic Van Buren experience you're going to get! The reason I am truly writing this review is because we made a routine stop today and my little 18mo old son fell in the parking lot (in true little boy fashion he just got ahead of himself and tripped) well he ended up scraping both of his knees pretty good. As not to cause a scene, my wife took him over to the side to comfort him while I looked for some napkins to clean up his knees. Before I could even get back to them the owners were standing with my wife with some basic first aid supplies and bandaids making sure my little boy was okay. This was above and beyond customer service and I really truly appreciated it. Very kind people 10/10 will be stopping again real soon.

Taylor's Stateline - Chicken Fried Steak

They had daily specials and world renowned fried pies. The chili was super fresh! The okra was very crunchy and filled with spices. The star of the show was the double mushroom and Swiss, that mushroom gravy was darn good. The patties were not frozen, fresh smashed burgers is what it tasted like. Hopefully I'll get the chance to stop back in sometime.

Out on the road with an unusually long amount of time to make a short amount of miles. Well, today…read moreis also Niki's Birthday and I didn't need her cooking and was not about to give her truckstop anything. So as we crossed the border from AK to MO we saw parking for a truck and a large sign that said Longhorn Grill. Pulled out Yelp and only saw Stateline but quickly assumed it was the same place. Only three reviews indicated that the rating means very little to me. Waking in, there was only one table being served and some wanna be tough boy trying to give me a mean mug which I met with a confident smirk as I sat down with the birthday girl. We started with the fried mushrooms. I ordered the BLD burger medium rare, fries, and an unsweetened iced tea with lemon. Niki got the shrimp basket with corn, coleslaw, toast to go alongside her pink lemonade. The food was great. The burger was juicy and flavorful. I am scared to know what the jumbo size option on that would have been as I only dented the heap of fries it nested on. Niki loved her food and we both agree that the mushrooms were some of the best we have ever eaten. The only reason I took a star away, which would only have been a half if I could was because my tea at first was water, and my burger was well done, not even medium, but everything else was amazing and I will be back again. With the same confident grin.

It's been a long time since we've stayed at the Landing. Has been rebuilt a couple times and is a…read morevery nice setting. We had a King room that was roomy and comfortable with parking nearby. Great view of the Current River. Bed was comfortable and room location was pretty quiet, surprisingly. Only downsides were the A/C was noisy and the faux wood floors were being cleaned with some product that made them kinda sticky. We liked the Kuerig coffee maker in the room along with the nice size fridge. Check in experience was good too with friendly staff. We made reservations with a phone call and all went to expectation. Their restaurant onsite is The Blue Heron and it was good as well. Overall we had a good experience and will likely stay again.

Pros: modern, spacious rooms (incl. suites), mini-refrig, some with microwave, no bugs/spiders,…read morelink-up with float services, private river-front gravel bar, Jingles-the-Friendly-Siamese cat (loves kids), friendly staff, on-site good restaurant (evening only), comfortable mattresses, big balconies with Adirondack chairs, OK convenience store, AT&T reception very good, only partial river view from some rooms. For addicts, booze and pot close by. Cons: typical noisy blowy HVac wall units, no house phone in rooms, no luggage help, walk to Rose Cliff Lodge for ice, no cooking or fires allowed anywhere, max. 2-story walk ups depending on room (no elevators), pricey, noise from big rigs on Hwy 60 bridge (less noise in River Center), no house computer, no playground/River here a bit fast for younger kids to play in. The biggest problem with this otherwise quality property was (officially anyway) a "no cancellation/refund/credit" policy. They don't charge your card until you check in, so it is unclear how rigidly enforced this policy is (+ there's a $15 cancel fee per room/day). We got flooded out over July 2025 weekend (Park Service closes the river if it gets over 6 feet - follow this on NOAA website/river level Van Buren MO). We elected to stay regardless (kids are more flexible and inventive than adults!) The Landing is highly dependent on the weather and have a limited season, so they really can't insure your stay. Still, they should have an official credit option for a future stay credit. In Van Buren: "The" Mexican restaurant serves huge good portions. The steaks at the Landing's Blue Heron come out mooing - you may need to have them touched up. Best breakfast is at the Ranch House. No nightlife. In area: Big Spring is spectacular, floating is worth the price, but best in a canoe unless you like cold butt (there's an enormous cave upstream from Van Buren), little funky animal park is pricey but fun for kids. For floating, IMHO the best stretch of the Current is Aker's Ferry to Round Spring, and do it in drought after July 4 for clear water and to minimize deer flies and horse flies.
