Their quote was in the middle in terms of cost for equivalent work, only higher than family/family friend price, but with guaranteed priority. Right from the beginning, they were quick to respond to our request for a quote and more communicative than the other contractors we were talking to. They were also open to working with us through the quote to ensure it fit our budget and needs, which I very much appreciated. Scope of project: 1. ~500 sf garage conversion to living space (1bd, 1 office, 1 bath and kitchenette). 2. Move furnace, hot water tank and washer/dryer. 3. Remodel and reconfigure kitchen, 2 bath (with reconfiguration of 1 bath), update all electrical in the house, and install hardwood flooring, among other things. 4. PG&E service upgrade. Timeline: Started in April 2025 and finished December 2025. I'm sure they would have finished 1-2 months earlier if not for delays with PG&E, and delivery of cabinets and appliances. Workmanship: I am very particular about good workmanship (I read up on how things should be done for fun) and have to say that the team at C Max Construction are very detail oriented and take pride in doing the best work. Even my family members who have been general contractors for 30 years (but did not have the capacity to work on our project) mentioned their excellent workmanship. This says a lot! Work Ethic: They were there from Monday to Saturday every week unless they were waiting on materials and appliances. Communication: They kept us posted with photos via text every week. I also met them at least once a week to get updates and next steps. They went above and beyond by also helping us communicate with PG&E and contractors they referred for roof and countertops. Their referrals were also competitively priced and had good workmanship. John came at the appointed time, inspected the complex wiring due to incremental additions to a 1915 house. He considered short- and long-term solutions. So that our tenants would have power and heat again he devised an immediate fix which required some unique connectors, drove to town to get the needed parts from two stores, and then installed a fused bypass. Our tenants had power when they came home. We are now getting the permits and design for a long-term solution and hope he will be able to help us again.

As he explained to us, the electrical service did not have the capacity that we needed. Paul came over on Tuesday to do some troubleshooting and setup an appointment to come back on Thursday to complete the work but would have comeback the following day if we were going to be home and available! Paul came back earlier this morning. Completed the work of replacing light switch, checked the light fixture to make sure it was not faulty and replaced the outlet. He went around the house to check on some of the other outlet to see which ones are grounded and which are not. Like most houses in San Francisco, this is an older house with old wiring, so getting someone to come in and do the work without saying you need to rewire the whole house is a good thing!
