I first started trifling in the fall of 2024. I had always donated all over. I never had garage sales I enjoyed donating To help others I had donated to Something Specialyou drive around back and they unload your car. Easy breezy. since I was a beginning resaler I needed a lot to build my inventory. From storage items to good finds. I had just had stem cell in my knees, ankle, and hip. Once it kicked in and started working I started getting out of the house and trying to live life again. I had physical therapy which helped but I was still building my Strength back. Well this shop got a lot of donations it looked to me they had grown out of their space and needed more room, so their were no shopping carts just small baskets which are find if you are just looking for a couple of things. Well I would fill up my basket go empty it beside the counter and go back and do it again. After about 4 trips I was tired and arms were giving out. So I had a nice large shopping bag on wheels by Natural Life that I used at the farmers market it could help me make less trips back and forth. Well I did not know that they did not allow shopping bags. But I soon figured it out. The check out woman started acting a little strange and then one day the owner kept asking me if I wanted her to take my bag and put it behind the counter normally I would of said sure and Thanked her but It occurred to me she did not trust me. But why weren't they letting me know this. So I went to the counter and asked the girls behind the counter what there policies were on shopping bags. So they told me then that they did not allow them and would have you leave them behind the counter. So I was very hurt because I realized what was going thru their heads they thought I was stealing. So I thought about it and I really liked this place but I knew I could never put up with this behavio. I would spend between 100.00 to 200 a week. I took all my merchandise out of the bag and set it on their shelves. I asked to talk to the manager or owner. I showed her where I sat everything back on their shelves. I then told her I would never be back at their store. I felt bad for the woman and children that lost out on the money I helped towards this business. The store has lovely things at great prices. However the employees there are super rude and racist. Ive tried to justify it by thinking maybe they are just having a rough day or week, but no. I've been here many times and they never fail to disappoint. If you ask them for help they just look at you stupid for asking them to do their job. Not only can you find "something special" (or multiple items), you are giving back to others that have been in a dangerous and or violent situation and need a safe environment to start their lives again! I can't imagine what this would mean to anyone who has been affected by family or domestic violence! Honestly, I have had multiple events in my personal life that has left me with needing a safe haven so to speak. After asking the sweet young lady with the braids in the front for assistance she said would tell Debbie we needed assistance to buy a beautiful desk. Most of the staff, especially the older ladies in the front, were extremely rude and dismissive. Their attitudes came across as constant microaggressions with eye rolls, sighs, and condescending tones that made me feel completely unwelcome. I have a spinal cord injury, so my sister was helping me carry everything. While I was checking out, one of the staff asked me to pick up one of the packed boxes. When I explained that I couldn't, she gave me a dirty look and huffed in frustration. I don't know if she looked at me like that because I'm young and don't look disabled or what, but why else would my sister be the only one carrying everything? It was humiliating and unnecessary. The overall energy in the store felt cold and unpleasant. The employees were not only rude to customers but also openly nasty to each other, which made the whole environment uncomfortable and tense. If you're late to schedule a pick up for donations (or to consign your items for those places that request an appointment) and need to offload your goods, this is the place to do it. We brought a bunch of items for donation in. Many of them brand new. Very easy to donate. Just go around the back during business hours. People already there to meet you. (If you have enough foresight you can also schedule a pickup.) The cause is great and the location was closest than other drop offs. read more

I went back today and the pricing is still very strange. Today they had individual hot wheels in a box for $7 each and opened ones for $3 which is mind boggling because they are 99 cents to $1.29 new. There were so many similar ones that I doubt these were collector items. If they were, they should have noted it because the price is even higher than new at the store. This store is still worth looking at but they should really consider pricing things more fairly and not three times as much as new. It was almost a great find until I gifted what I thought was a brand new coffee set. So, I probably spent a good 4 hours in here just looking and seeing what was in every nook and cranny. I absolutely love thrift stores. I used to sell here and there but I've found it frustrating. I've decided to enjoy thrifting for myself and keeping things I fun along the way. That being said I found some glasses, vintage decor, jewelry and a coffee pot set. I was extremely ecstatic about all of the stuff I purchased. Though, I knew instantly the coffee pot was going to be a gift for a family member. My brother comes in every once in awhile from out of town. He flies in or sometimes drives into town, and he always brings gifts for the kids. He's single and has done well for himself. So, any gift I get him is nothing compared to what he's given himself. Except this time I thought I'd done it. I found the perfect gift or so I thought. In the store they have labels that state "New or Used" with the date and the signature. A few other thrift stores have done that, and they're for the most part truthful. Well this box stated "new" though it was opened because it was tested. It was labeled as working, and was only on the shelf for two days. I verified with an employee and she stated it was working and labeled correctly. Well I thought I hit the jackpot. As I shopped I left it on the counter while others asked about it since it was an epic find. Well I purchased about $100 bucks worth of items and went home. Now at home I wrapped the coffee machine up and left it at that. I hadn't thought anything of it except of course removing the sticker. It was the perfect gift for my brother. I had finally found something my brother could use and showcase in his beautiful modern home. The big reveal comes and there's so much excitement and anticipation I can't wait. He loves it and can't wait to test it out. So, we test it right there in my kitchen on my counter. All low and behold the damn f***ing thing doesn't work. I was out $30 bucks and left with embarrassment. I told him I'd return it to the "store" and he agreed to just leave it with me since I told him I no longer had the receipt. Well I'm not sure what the return policy is but it was weeks later and I no longer had the receipt like I mentioned above. I couldn't even tell him that I purchased it secondhand because I had finally purchased something he'd like. All in all the other items were a great find and I enjoyed adding them to my collection. It's frustrating that the coffee machine was broken and that it was mislabeled. It would be only fair if they'd return the item, but it's at this point such a hassle to even try. If I return I won't buy any electronics that's for sure. read more

If your in the area it's a quick stop by because 9 out of 10 everything is tooooo expensive. I mean there games are more expensive than Amazon. Toys way overpriced. Books ok, clothing way too much among many other items. I understand for a good cause but please. They even have items that been there for a long time but prices never change. Think it being a small store they would want to rotate their items more. But I guess they don't want to help the people they help by pricing high and keeping everything. They could move twice as much merchandise and make a lot more money for the Womens' Shelter if they would just price things reasonably. Keep in mind, these are all DONATED ITEMS!! I won't donate here anymore and today was my last visit. I found an old pair of shoes for $20, (absolutely ridiculous!) $5 for a five-inch battery powered analogue clock, and they were asking $8 for one of those old, beat up and much maligned "shake weights." I laughed my way out of the store......just gets worse... Whoever is in charge of setting prices here needs a major reality check. Four stars. One star goes to customer service-the ladies were very nice. While I was there, one of them had to deal with a terribly rude customer and they handled it with grace. Two stars go to the cause. Going in there to buy just one thing is worth it. The proceeds go to caring for battered and abused women, and they need all the support they can get. Final star goes to interesting items. You have to dig, but they're there for the finding. I found a NASCAR mug I really liked and bought it. There were all kinds of beautiful glassware. There were some very interesting German beer steins. I saw a lady buy a beautiful large wicker basket, pristine condition, for like $10 and I was jealous. I docked a star for the following reasons (I know, it's a charity, but I have to be honest with myself): their prices are pretty high. They are higher than Goodwill. Again, it is worth buying for the cause, but if price is your first priority you may find more bang for your buck at another thrift shop. Also, the clientele are mostly older women. I believe they mostly donate too-most of the clothes and household items were too old fashioned to reasonably use (expected in thrift stores, but this one especially so). The cashiers knew some of them by name. So expect some super old timey things and people, but like I said, just looking hard you'll find some cool stuff. Bottom line: pricey and most things are pretty old fashioned, but worth it for the cause and if you dig you'll find some treasures! Also-FYI: $5 minimum for card purchases. read more

There prices have gotten higher in the last 5 years. They do have some nice furniture items as wells as home decor, but all over priced too much. Even when I try to ask for a lower price. Their clothes pricing is outrageous too for a resale. For those prices you might as well go to the mall. I know it's all for a good cause but I truly think they could sell a lot more if they would ease up a little on their high prices. I love this place. Always bargain hunting, you can find some really unique items here at a reasonable cost. Don't be afraid to haggle, they will go down in price on merchandise that has been there awhile and they always have more stuff to put out than will fit in the store. We have found good deals on books, electronics/appliances, shoes, furniture, dishes, decorations, jewelry...you name it. Many things seem overpriced but if you look carefully, there are always bargains to be had. Also, all the money for a to the Montgomery County Women's Shelter. It's all for a good cause. My wife and I love to shop here over other thrift stores in the area. The proceeds go to a really great cause. The staff are always very nice. We always are able to find a good buy and never leave empty handed. I agree with other reviews about the pricing being a little high but that's not the case with everything. You do have to search for a bargain but they have a lot of items marked way below what you would pay at Goodwill or other places. I always like to browse their men's wear and have gotten a steal on many dress suits and blazers. I always come out with a shirt or two and some jeans or trousers. Their kitchen wares or dishes, etc. have a pretty good turnover. My wife always finds blouses or purses she says are priced really great. The thing is they have better quality items than Goodwill, which I never go to anymore at least the ones around here. They have an abundance of merchandise to browse. They also will pick up items that are too heavy or awkward to drop off. read more

I went to Something Special with my boyfriend and his parents (who buy from here often). This place is an absolute fire hazard, some of the aisles were so packed that my boyfriend had trouble getting through and he's a bean pole. Lots of stuff in the floor too. I honestly don't know which was worse, the whole store smelling like baby powder, or the fact that they were selling used makeup at a similar price to what it's sold in the stores. What really set off the trip was the fact that they have a "volunteers only section", which isn't a problem but the sign is on the door which was propped open with mounds of junk so my bf and I couldn't tell where the store ends and the office begins. I crossed this very blurred line and was condescendingly talked down to by an older woman who treated me like a child. The clutter, mixed with the atrocious smell, and absolutely horrible staff gave me a migraine. read more

I know a bit more about this agency as I work with them and many others on a regular basis as part of my job. I have been to the shelter, transitional living location, and the administration building. Those who go through the program are allowed to shop at Something Special for free. This includes furnishing their apartment once they leave the shelter. What many don't know is that since they are a 501c3 they run on grants, volunteers, and donations. Their transitional living facility is so nice. The mothers and children have to feel good about living there. It takes a LOT of money to care for all the sites. Montgomery County Women's Center does amazing things for those in crises. The shelter is quiet nice and the children have a clean, safe, and structured environment. My suggestion is if you think they are too high, go elsewhere. Garage sales, perhaps. As many have mentioned, there are some great deals to be had. It requires time unless you know what you are looking for. If you don't like the price, talk to the manager. You never know. Perhaps she will shave some off the price. I love the volunteers as many of these ladies have been working there for years, and they do the best job they can to get things priced and on the floor asap. The store manager works her butt off trying to make sure everything runs smoothly. As for it being a fire hazard, that's not true. They wouldn't have been in business as long as they have if they were breaking any codes. It's a resale shop. They try and have it set up where you the path flows from one area to another. The walkways are a bit tight, but it is what it is. Shopping there is a hit or miss. They have sale days/discounts. I go every chance I get if nothing else than to just look around. read more
