Here's our overall 2.5 rating: Ambiance 10/10 Service 2/10 (weird, impersonal and he never checked on how we were doing after we got our food and were pretty much ignored. Hostess didn't communicate the birthday celebration but server also didn't inquire. Dropped the check without asking if we wanted anything else or asking how we enjoyed everything. We waited a full 20min for him to grab the card silently and run off. Then again dropped it quietly. We clearly only had one bite of the dessert, but that didn't register. Server was William. Appetizer 3/10 (fried chicken sliders were undercooked and the sweetness from the pickles was off putting) Entrees 10/10 (short ribs, salmon & Mac) Desert 0/10 (chocolate torte. WTH was that?! Brunch review: As expected, you aren't seated till most of your party gets there, but there wasn't a wait once we were both there. The ambience does give dinner/supper club even though it's brunch. There's no natural light in the building. The food was soooo good though. Shrimp and grit 10/10. It is a lighter dish though so if you're starving you might need something else Shrimp cocktail- tasty, but still Shrimp cocktail. Not worth the price for 4 Shrimp Ham and cheese scramble- 10/10. Filling and you get a little bit of everything. Protein, starch, and greens Espresso martini- 10/10 if you're not a creamy coffee person. Heard about Somerville but never made it. Better late than never. And after my visit, I wished I had gone sooner. I don't remember what night it was however, it was close by and a friend and I had went elsewhere and was underwhelmed. A quick search in the area landed us at Somerville. I parked in front on Slauson. Free. I heard there's a lot in the back but I don't know any more details than that. I just know that I don't like parking on a main drag because of the potential for accidents - but when you're in LA - you take what you can get. It was later when I overheard someone mentioning the lot in back. Service was excellent. From the server, to the chef to the manager - all came out checking on us and even just chatting. All this and live jazz. Not complaining one bit. It was one of those experiences where you feel like you're in someone's home and they're just making you feel like their guest. I went back Feb 2026 to celebrate a friend's birthday and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, from beginning to end. We arrived a little early and waited at the bar. I believe I had the Dunbar, which has Prosecco and Hennessy...loved it! Once seated, everything that hit the table was excellent! Two of us had the kale salad and caviar slides and loved them! It was the perfect amount of food. One person had the chicken and enjoyed it and the sides. The other two had the Salmon, which was a delight with a curry sauce. Now I have to bring my husband back so we can try it together. Service was friendly and attentive and the ambiance remains top tier! They charge a $10 per person plate fee if you bring your own cake. I thought that was a bit excessive so we opted to provide the bday person with a slice. They will hold it for you and provide a candle. Believe the hype and come here! Owners Issa Rae, Yonnie Hagos and Ajay Relan intentionally created an elegant vibe in View Park-Windsor Hills that celebrates the rich history of South Central LA. Upon entering, guests are transported to a grand speakeasy with a high wooden ceiling, velvet booths, vintage chandeliers and lighting and art deco designs. The live jazz band is the focal point and sets the mood every night. Note that they don't seat parties until everyone is there. They should mention this detail in the reservation reminders. One of our friends out of a party of 5 was running a little behind and we had to wait outside until she came. My party got seated next to the band so it was a bit loud, but we appreciated the music and the view of the beautiful bar. We were still able to chat. We enjoyed our drinks and most of the dishes we ordered. The Golden Age is their twist on the Old Fashioned, the Sweet Tone was like a raspberry tequila martini and Forget Me Not was a nice balance of Ilegal Mezcal, Chareau, pepper honey and Glenfiddich 12 Scotch. Fried Chicken & Caviar Sliders ($27 for 2) the Buttermilk-brined chicken were decent, juicy pieces but didn't taste much of the caviar in the Petrossian creme fraiche. Maybe that's why the chef recommends adding 4 grams of caviar for an extra $45! However, we got the Baked Mac n Cheese ($17) and added Maine lobster for an extra $17 and thought that was worth it. The Mac n cheese was rich and crispy on top and the lobster elevated the dish nicely. The Brussel Sprouts ($16) were cooked and seasoned perfectly. Not greasy at all and the crispy rice added a good texture. But the Winning dish was the Collard Green Lasagna ($34)! It doesn't look that impressive on the surface but when you cut into it, you'll be pleasantly surprised with the marrying of flavors of the greens, bechamel, ricotta, sun dried tomatoes, parmesan and mozzarella layered in al dente pasta. We finished our meal by sharing a fudge brownie topped with strawberries and ice cream. The fudge was rich and gooey. The strawberries and ice cream balanced out each bite. There were a couple of mishaps with service, but they made up for it in a special way. I would definitely return to try more dishes and enjoy the live jazz and ambience. Unfortunately, my party was seated in the corner with our backs to the rest of the restaurant, so we couldn't fully enjoy the atmosphere as we were facing a wall. As for the food, the chicken sliders were good, but probably not something I'd say are worth the price. Finally made it to Somerville. Was it worth the hype? For a one-time visit--yes. But would I go back? Probably not. I'd heard mixed reviews going in, so I was mostly there for the aesthetics and the vibes. On that front, they nailed it: 5 stars for ambiance and service. Now, the food. We started with the much-talked-about rolls. They were definitely good and lived up to the hype, but at $19 for six small rolls, it felt a little steep. For entrées, we ordered the braised short ribs and the collard greens lasagna. The short ribs, served over creamy risotto, were flavorful but a touch too salty. The lasagna, though, was the biggest disappointment of the night. It was so overwhelmingly cheesy that it completely drowned out the greens--I genuinely couldn't tell you what the greens or even the noodles tasted like. Don't believe the hype on that one. Dessert was the highlight: the chocolate torte. Think chocolate mousse-like cake with a crisp wafer bottom, fresh strawberries, and a scoop of strawberry gelato--absolutely delicious. Cocktails: We tried The Dunbar, which is similar to a French 75 but made with Hennessy instead of gin, and Forget Me Not, a mezcal-based drink. The Dunbar was my favorite of the two. Somerville checked all the boxes I didn't know I needed checked. Wow! From the moment, Noel said, 'Welcome to Somerville' and pulled the entry curtain back, I knew I was in for a treat. Upon walking in to the restaurant, due to the unassuming exterior, I did not know what to expect. The curtain pulled back and I entered a wide open space of beautifully crafted wood walls with exposed beams. Tall green plants lined the walls and the lighting was soft. The live band played on the left side with a fully rich sound and expert artistry. I stood at the entry way for a moment without walking to my seat right away. I was mesmerized and felt transported to a modern day jazzy supper club. Everyone who was there looked liked they stepped put of a fashion magazine or were about to audition for an amazing Hollywood role. We were escorted to a half round booth in the back on the right side. This was the perfect spot to see who was coming, going and mingling in between. The restaurant was celebrating it's one year anniversary. As I took a look around, I could see how they made it through the first year. The ambience created made you want to be there and be a part of something beautiful. As the music flowed throughout the restaurant, I felt beautiful. Kendall was our server. She was attentive, knowledgeable, kind and helpful. She moved with ease to fulfill or anticipate any requests we had. At our table, the items ordered were: truffles fries (hot, crispy and satisfying), salmon (seasoned to perfection in a curry type sauce), roast beef (tender, juicy and delicious), chicken (tender, flavorful and those grits were wonderful!). A drink: A Love Supreme, I think it was called was just okay. I ran into the actress, Issa Rae in the bathroom. I did not know this was her restaurant. I would have loved to have taken a photo with her and congratulated her on Somerville's success, but I didn't not want to intrude. Well done on all fronts. Attention to detail was had for the decor, music, ambient lighting, menu, even the bathroom was gorgeous. Again, I say, well done. We started with the Parker House Rolls and all I have to say is there is a reason those sell out every night (the butter they come with is delightfully seasoned). Somerville is an awesome experience. A group of 5 of us had a reservation for Saturday night to celebrate Mother's Day. It was the first visit for all of us, except for my daughter. (Reservations are recommended.) We arrived a few minutes early and parking was easy with valet in front of the building as well as in the back of the building. There is free parking in the back as well if you can find an open space. I believe it was $20 for valet. This is a fine dining restaurant, so if the parking fee puts you off, this might not be the place for you. Plan to drop some coin here but I promise you it will be worth it! The host at the door, Yasmin (I hope that is right), was welcoming and treated us like a VIP. She invited us to the bar while we waited to be seated. The bartender, Enrique, greeted us right away and provided a walk through of their signature cocktails. The ambiance was inviting, lowkey exciting with its dim lighting which created a bit of mystery to the well balanced mix of modern and art deco-ish room (check out their clean and beautifully designed bathrooms too. The flooring gives Great Gatsby vibes.) We were first service as it just opened at 6P. We were sat in a booth within a few minutes. This seems like a great date night location or seems best for small groups, 5 or less. I heard they have a private room upstairs that can accommodate more but the live jazz band is in the main restaurant and you want to be front and center for that because Brian, the music director who introduced himself to us, produces an amazing set. The music really sets the vibe, and people met the vibe with style! I had wished I had worn my little black dress. Once seated, Dennis introduced himself, filled our water glasses, walked through the menu, and providing some awesome suggestions. He was simply pleasant and attentive, making sure we were well taken care of throughout our stay, he didn't miss a beat. Let's get into the food and drinks because I can honestly say this was the best meal I've ever had in my life. I can't say fine dining is my regular style of dining but I feel I've had enough experience to compare and even without it, the most important thing is I enjoyed this meal immensely. From my first cocktail, the Sweet Tone with Patron Reposado Tequila with a hint of raspberry, lemon and orange. Sweetly refreshing! Followed by the delicious Heyday (Hennessy VS with mandarin and lemon adds). We had champagne for a Mother's Day toast which was crisp and clean. I hear the Mighty River was a win and they make a nice Old Fashioned. First course we had the melt in your mouth Parker House Rolls and Classic Shrimp Cocktail (now I don't usually like cocktail sauce because I don't like horseradish - this was amazing - no over powering tastes, just a perfect blend of flavor with a brush of sweetness.) and the Tuna Crudo which did not disappoint. For the main dishes, two of us had the Collard Green Lasagna (which was so rich and filling that we ate only a 1/4 of the skillet and my leftovers were just as delicious the next day for breakfast because I couldn't wait to taste it again!). Mom had the tender mouthwatering Braised Shortribs and she remarked that the risotto takes first place in her recent comparisons. Mary's Organic Roasted Chicken is a favorite and my daughter had the Hamachi Crudo which is a starter but is her favorite dish at Somerville. For sides we had the "lawd have mercy!" Baked Macaroni & Cheese, the Brussel Sprouts (sweet and tangy with crispy savory bits of deliciousness) and please don't skip the Truffle Fries (perfectly crisp on the outside, soft on the inside snow capped with shredded cheese. YUM!) If we wondered how this meal could be any better, all we had to do was wait for dessert. We shared three and I received them in this order Tres Leches (this being my favorite cake in general, I've had many but this was the best ever, moist, light and rich with flavor at the same time = heaven), the Chocolate Torte with strawberry gelato is a perfect pairing (sink your teeth into a thick warm chunk of chocolate in contrast with the cool sweetness of gelato), and lastly was the firmly smooth yet creamy delectable Leche Flan topped with the unexpected smokey caramel crispy bits. Each dessert was better than the next. Flan landed as my personal favorite but I wouldn't be surprised if I had tried it in any other order, the last would be my favorite - they just continued to impress! I want to make mention that throughout the night, dirty dishes were promptly removed, new utensils provided, water glasses were kept full (they're happy to provide lemon if you ask), and the service was 5 star! The place felt like a speakeasy. The lights were dim, seats were intimate, live jazz played most of the night with no many breaks. I felt like I was transported to the past for a second. We ordered the fried chicken sliders, Brussels sprouts, baked mac and cheese and the collard green lasagna. No bland plates were harmed in the making of this meal. We tried the buttermilk biscuits, classic shrimp cocktail, fried chicken caviar sliders, steak n eggs, crab quiche, Peruvian scallops & shrimp and grits. The vibe is dimly lit, giving grown-and-sexy, "don't rush me, I'm enjoying this" energy. Definitely a spot for date night or catching up with friends who know how to behave in public. Parking is... an experience. You can valet for $20 (because luxury ) or test your luck with street parking if you're feeling adventurous. Is it a little pricey? Yes. Will your wallet feel it? Went to Somerville with my husband and another couple. It was such a vibe in there! You walk in and you're immediately transported to another time zone and another world! It was captivating, especially with the live music! And the food was better than expected. The Parker house rolls were very good--12/10! The fish was very flavorful (w the sauce and vegetables) and I would definitely get that again next time -- 9/10 (skin could have been crispier). The Brussels sprouts were unique and had crispy pieces of rice in it--sounds odd was was very good --10/10. Everyone else loved their food too. So we shall be back. Came through on a Thursday night with no reservations. We happened to luck up on timing and found a few places at the bar and got settled. Live jazz was playing and ambiance was beautiful. Gabe was an amazing bartender with such a great personality. I understand they get busy but he kept checking in and having light conversations. He made my night. Food was good and filling. Somerville truly exceeded every expectation I had. From the moment we arrived (a little early for our reservation), the experience was seamless. While waiting, we sat at the bar and were immediately greeted by the friendly and knowledgeable bar staff. My sister and I ordered a lemon drop with a slight twist (staff recommendation) and it was perfection: light and refreshing. My brother had an old fashioned and described it as top tier, and trust me, he's not easy to impress. Once seated, we started with the chicken and caviar sliders, which were the perfect combination of bold flavor and delicate texture absolutely delicious. The Black Goddess salad was fresh, flavorful, and elevated something as simple as a salad into something truly special. The braised shortrib was so tender, rich, and packed with deep, savory flavor. It was easily one of the best dishes I've had in a long time. The service throughout the evening was attentive and warm without ever feeling intrusive. I really enjoyed the overall vibe of this restaurant, the atmosphere has a classy, jazzy charm thats very welcoming. The staff was wonderful from start to finish they were all incredibly kind and attentive. As for the food, it was undeniably flavorful and delicious. I ordered the short rib ravioli, which was rich and creamy, and my friend had the roasted chicken with grits and gravy. The chicken was cooked beautifully, but the portion was so large that the grits and gravy felt more like a garnish than part of a composed dish. The flavors were there, but I would've loved to see a more balanced plating. That actually sums up my main critique overall I just wish the presentation of the food and the table settings matched the elegance of the space. The restaurant has this refined, jazzy ambiance, but the food plating felt a little too plain in comparison. Nothing on the plates quite gave that "wow" factor visually.
