Dr. Murakawa is knowledgeable, personable and funny to boot. He's an absolute genius in his field, he graduated from Harvard Medical School and taught at Stanford Medical School-can you get any better than that?? I had a conglomeration of blood vessels on one finger that another physician couldn't seem to get rid of-it kept coming back. Dr. Murakawa removed it surgically and that was that. And, to top it off his prices are very competitive for various procedures. And his staff are top notch. So you have a man at the top of his field, doing great work, being very approachable and personable, easy to schedule and his prices are competitive-why would you go anywhere else for a Dermatologist? read more

This medical practice is terrible! Dr. M doesn't listen, doesn't answer questions, doesn't explain diagnosis or treatments, he doesn't give you agency to make decisions about your own health, and he blames his mistakes on his (female) staff. I wonder if he treats all his patients like this or just the female patients? It is very suspicious how young and pretty ALL the staff are. I only saw 2 women over the age of 30. That speaks volumes! Dr. M barely talked to me before prescribing me medication. He kept trying to leave the room while I was still talking to him. I asked him a question, he shrugged and walked away without answering me! The medication he gave me was very strong and hazardous to take. Dr. M didn't discuss the medications many side effects, many drug interactions (one of which I had), risks of taking the medication (which include cancer!), or handling instruction (you are not suppose to handle the medication with bare hands!). I had serious side effects. He told me to keep taking the medicine because the side effects will go away. After 2 more weeks on the medication I was bedridden and almost hospitalized from side effects. I went to see him about it, the first thing he said was "I don't need to hear about it" because I was just dehydrated. I told him that the Mayo Clinic website says these are symptoms of a severe reaction to the med. He told me "Everything is a side effect" and that it wasn't from the medication. And told me I could do "Whatever I wanted." WHAT?!?! I consulted another specialist. They were shocked and told me to spot talking the medication immediately because I was on the verge of having a heart attack (even though I am young and health). WORST DOCTOR!! read more

While I believe he is very good at what he does (my surgery turned out very nice, great results) he came into my room to suture my face up and was LITERALLY chewing a mouth full of blueberry muffin!!!! This place seemed nice at the beginning and the majority of the medical staff that I spoke with in person was very friendly and professional, however based on my experience with billing today, I must say that this specific part of the group is extremely unprofessional, condescending and blatantly patronizing. The office manager Rebecca is terrible to work with. She simply does not have any people skills. As a manager, you should be able to diffuse any situation and keep your cool instead of pouring gasoline on fire. I would definitely not recommend this place unless the billing department gets proper training by professionals. A bit of a back story - I received a bill for sending a picture message of a TB shot on my arm and received a response. This was supposedly counted as a tele-visit. They charged me for the TB shot initially and then they charged me again two days later to tell me via text that my TB shot is OK. This has never been explained to me in the past when I visited the office. The only reason this place gets 1 star is because of my terrible experience with the extremely undertrained billing department. read more

Waited over an hour and never saw the doctor. I was told that my insurance has a rule that since I have not been there in 3 years, I am considered a new patient. The insurance requires me to first be seen by the doctor and then make another appointment for the simple procedure to be done. I left and called my insurance. This is not true, the simple procedure could be done in the same visit. I made my appointment properly telling them what I needed done and I was on time. Only after an hour passed and I inquired about what was going on (they do have a sign in the office that says if you have waited over 20 minutes, notify the person at the front desk), did I find out that they would not do the simple procedure at that visit. My entire family and I won't be back. Don't waste your time. read more

DR. GEORGE MURAKAWA is the worst doctor I have met, The office managers are very rude. he just talked to me for 40 secs then left, and prescribed me many shots and medications I dont need at all. I waited for 1 hour and he showed up for 40 secs then left. I am gonna keep complaining to my insurance company about this Japanese doctor, how bad and irresponsible he is. I didn't have a bad experience, but it didn't blow me away, either...hence the "I've experienced better" rating. The reception staff was perfectly nice, and I was called into a room fairly quickly. But then I got handed a tissue paper robe--which the nurse cut in half because the doc just needed to look at my top. Except the robe was SO small that 1) it tore while I was trying ti put it on so I basically had two "sleeves" I was trying to hold together and 2) it barely covered my torso. After the usual wait time for the doc to come in, he basically looked at me for 10 seconds and said "I'll give you a scrip for a cream." I think I actually said "That's it?" He said something to the effect of "Well, we could take a sample and see what it is...but a cream should work. If it doesn't, then you can come back..." Um, ooookay. That really was not what I was expecting. I was expecting some thought or suggestion as to what he thought caused the issue. Or at least to listen to my spiel without cutting me off. I could have gotten that basic treatment from my regular doctor, but my OB had suggested a dermatologist so that's where I went (although granted it wasn't WHO she recommended because they weren't covered on my insurance). I'd go back, but I am pretty sure I won't be blown away. But if I do end up having to go back, I will revisit my rating. read more

I usually get suspicious when I see a number of negative reviews that appear to be planted by either competitors or unrealistic patients. I was yelping this clinic while I was in their waiting area. My thoughts, I've come to the wrong place! Get out asap. But I played out the hand. Earlier in the day I was referred there by my PCP. As it was just around the corner I decided to stop in and start the conversation. The young ladies at the front desk were professional and pleasant. I got an appointment for later in the day. They were having electrical problems , but that didn't stop the fine team from doing their job. I've been to a number of dermatology clinics and this place gets a well deserved 5 star. And no, I have no financial interest in the place and I am not some sort of relative. Negative reviews, might not be for real. read more

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE MAKING AN APPOINTMENT HERE!!! I was dragged along for over a year and a half by this doctor, who had absolutely no clue what my condition was or how to treat it but became blaringly obvious toward the end that he didn't want me to get better, or else he could not keep prescribing all sorts of heavy medications and toxic biologic injections. Moreover, he charged me for two full doctor visits (they are on tiers) when I never even saw the doctor. I disputed these two visits for months on end, to no avail. I also disputed a test they gave me without my consent and ended up with a $600 bill for one test! They would not budge on either of these. I finally succumbed to the fact that they would not do anything, and when I received a bill for my total (after I stopped seeing him), I made a good-Faith payment for half the entire amount. Less than 60 days later I received a notice from a collections agency!! They are really a low moral, money-hungry, uninterested in actual patient care practice. You can see from the plethora of terrible reviews here that I should have checked them out before ever agreeing to go. I am saddened by my experience and to know that there are so many who have been swindled, misdiagnosed, and treated as poorly as I. Take note here and learn from the rest of us. 0/10 read more

Dr. Murakawa spent very little time with you and directed treatments to staff never explaining treatments to you. He acted like you upset him by asking questions. After several visits the treatment failed and then they were through with you. Went to another site and they cured me. Will never go back there. This is the worst experience with a physician's office I've ever had. Their office was very poorly run. They will charge you for evening visits and not inform you of those charges. Bills come months after your appointement. Dr. Murakawa is everything but professional. From racist comments about how he would never date a Korean to comments about how I should tell my mother I was gay because I didn't have a gf. He also treats everything with a smile and joke which was very inappropriate as he diagnosed me with melanoma. During surgery he showed me the removed mass from my back without my consent. I highly recommend finding another dermatologist. read more

I had a very poor experience with this office. First off I waited close to three hours to be seen by the physician and the office was not busy. When the doctor entered the room he spent less than 3 minutes with me. This was my 1st visit with this doctor so most of this time was spent answering his general questions about my health followed by a brief physical exam. I went to the office for two reasons. I had an area of concern that he barely looked at and never offered any explanation of what it could be. I also asked for a script to help out with blemishes that I used in the past. He told me that it probably won't help, but offered no other options, and ultimately did not write the script. The physician was more concerned about getting out of the room than addressing either one of my concerns. The appointment was a complete waste of my time and money. I was later contacted by the office manager because she said that the office accepts HAP but does not accept the HAP coverage from the hospital that I am employed by. I told her that I would like to use my HSA card to pay for the services and she told me that I am not allowed to use my HSA card because I should have gone to a clinic within the HAP network. I called a representative from my HSA account and I was told that this was not true, the card can be used to pay for the visit. The representative told me to have them use the HSA card like any other credit card. I called the office back to pay the bill with the HSA card. The office manager told me there was a long process to bill my HSA card and my options were to pay with a personal check or credit card. I offered to bring the representative from the HSA in on a 3-way call to complete the payment. The office manager became irate and told me she she is not going to submit the payment to the HSA and she threatened to put into collections if I did not pay by personal check or credit card. I attempted to resolve this two more times and I cannot tell you how poorly I was treated by representatives of this office. Ultimately a third party was brought in to resolve the issue. They were able to use my HSA card to pay for services charged by this office. read more

This office is nice and spacious and there is never a long wait, which makes any doctor's office a 10 in my book. The staff is friendly and Dr. Murakawa is just so nice. My only "issue" is that only after my second appointment did they confirm (and I say "confirm," not "advise" because I only noticed it on my insurance company's statement) that they charge extra for appointments after 5pm. I would think that with such a policy, it would be made known to new patients, which is what I was. So if you require an evening appointment, make sure your insurance covers it or you will be charged. read more

Dr Murakawa is amazing. I've had two Mohs surgeries on my face performed by Dr Murakawa One was misdiagnosed from another Dr. His skill and perfectionism is appreciated. Allie and Maida are my nurses who are kind, compassionate and extremely knowledgeable. The whole team is amazing which is why I drive over 3 hours one way to keep this team treating my skin. I am more than surprised by the reviews of Dr. Murakawa having only just thought to review him but been a patient and had Mohs surgery by him previously and my husband and daughter being patients who have had surgery as well and been followed up by him. My surgery was on my face and not only is Mohs surgery something that few are qualified to do but you couldn't even tell I HAD it. Dirty rooms? Are you kidding me? You could eat off the floors of this Center and that applies to every time I've been myself, with my husband and daughter. Dr. Murakawa does like it cool - let's be up front COLD and given that I always come dressed for it no matter what time of year. Sure, I've had to wait briefly but there are magazines and a TV to watch. I wait far shorter periods here than I do at the doctor I see every week here in town who thinks NOTHING of keeping me waiting upwards of an hour past my appt. I have been and AM more than pleased with the service and treatment we have all received from Dr. Murakawa with NO complaints. Oh yes....where do you go to the Dr. anymore and they have snacks and coffee in the waiting room for patients and their family because some of the procedures DO necessarily require waits in between procedure/lab????? I brag about being a foodie and am less proud of being a professional physician "shopper" but I do see an internal medicine doctor at least 1x a week, a neurologist monthly and other doctors more sporadically so I feel I am particularly qualified to defend Dr. Murakawa's office on a comparative basis. read more

Stay away. My wife has been in tears over her experience today with our 8 year old daughter who had to have a cyst removed from her leg. The staff was casual to the point of disrespectful, and the doctor was so unprofessional and unsanitary. He does not know how to talk to kids at all. Dr. Murakawa was rushed, used his cell phone (cell phones are terribly unsanitary!!) to take a picture of my daughters leg (weird?)and then without washing his hands put on gloves to cut open my daughters leg. The nurse didn't use an alcohol wipe to clean her leg prior to giving her a shot, and then Dr. Murakawa quickly performed the procedure. When my wife asked for some analysis and what the cyst was attached to, he dismissed the question and said "ahhh, I got all of that crud out of there" and left the room. Unprofessional. Rude. Unsanitary. Afraid to go back for our follow-up appointment in two weeks. We will be sure to share with the doctor who referred us here to never refer people here again. Stay away. read more

Always have to wait in the lobby for 10 mins and in your room for 10-15 mins. total of 30 mins to wait to see Dr. Murakawa. I just saw him for an allergy test. Nothing too specialized. I've had other allergy tests before where you have to apply an allergen to the skin and cover for a week. This was 3 appointments. Just beware, that this will be a $75 test. Other places may not charge you for all 3 appointments. They did not inform me of this, and even at check out, they only charged me for one visit and later billed me. read more

Dr. Murakawa is the best of the best when it comes to skin cancers and only one of a handful in Michigan capable of taking care of me. I'm a new patient here. The wait was not long but Dr. Murakawa only saw me for less than 5 minutes. The assistant who saw me after told me if my Co-pay for my prescription is high, I have to call them back so they will prescribe another cream. I was there 12/2/17 and left a message the same day that my co-pay was indeed high and asked to have my prescription changed. I called Monday around 5 pm to follow up if they were able to have it changed but I was told they were so busy that they haven't got the chance to go through the voicemails. It's now Wednesday and my new prescription wasn't called in yet to my pharmacy. Btw, I wasn't informed also about extra charge on weekends and evening appointments. So disappointing. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! They tell you they will call with your results - THEY DO NOT! When you do call (and finally get thru) they make it so hard for you to get the results. They claim that you can view them on their online portal. There are "bugs" in the set-up...I called back and they state that they will have to FAX the release. Then they state they need 2-weeks to get the Dr. to approve the release - to send me said results!! UNACCEPTABLE!! DONT WASTE YOUR TIME GOING HERE!!! read more

2 things that cause me to leave a 1 star review: 1. it is suspicious to me that Dr. Murakawa processes biopsies in office and reads his own pathology. 2. He is not fellowship trained in Mohs surgery but does Mohs anyways. He isn't highly trained to do this procedure. I got a weird vibe from the doctor and the staff was less than friendly. I think it would be easy to scam people by telling them they have skin cancer and treating it with surgery because there are no checks and balances in place to verify his results. When I asked for my records to be released to another doctors office, they never made it. It took months of calling and fighting with the office to get my own medical records. Dr. Murakawa is the best Dermatologist in the tri state area. I was being treated at the University of Michigan and left because they are not helping me to my satisfaction. Dr. Murakawa is working miracles for me. The staff is so nice too! I've never waited more than 15 minutes, I'm greeted with smiles and kindness on every visit. I went to Dr. Murakawa for a skin rash. He cam in and spoke with me for approximately 2 minutes. Diagnosed me with a fungal rash and prescribed medicine all with in 10 minutes I was in and out..too good to be true right. Well the rash never went away. The follow up visit was identical to the first visit. 20 min wait outside ..15 min wait in the doctors office and a two minute conversation with the doctor again, received the same medication as last time that showed no more then 20% improvement of the rash. Yes, I know this is where I messed up going back a third time but the doctor requested I come back for "follow up medication" because " the medication had deepen to my pores. So, I went back for the third visit stating ZERO improvement of my rash. That is when the doctor told me that I needed a biopsy, As I was being reclined for the biopsy I was told to sign this form because I need this..I need this biopsy. So after taking the biopsy and having to pay 192.00 out of pocket for the procedure I thought I would receive some results ..maybe a call from the doctor. Well after a week and a half goes by with no word..I called and asked what was going on. I was told first that the doctor DOES NOT speak with patients on the phone. I was told the the biopsy was to rule things out such as "melanoma" and told to come back in for more test to be done to rule more things out. I then received a doctors bill from st. Joseph mercy hospital for $1200 a $400 adjustment witch left me with a $700 plus co pay for the doctors to read my biopsy that the doctor ordered. All this and still not one valid answer on what the rash was...Hey, but $900 dollars later I know I don't have cancer..To bad my family history, blood test, and other things that could have been done before a Immunofluorescence test quantity x4 coming in at the majority of the St. Joes bill $843. To double check for cancer. Again the doctor after 3 visits and a total of 5 minutes talking time not once asked about family history or anything of that nature. Why would Dr. Murakawa order these Melanoma test for a patient with a rash? For a patient with zero family history of skin cancer? Maybe because he was worried..Maybe because he likes to check everything. Maybe he likes to run up patients insurances. read more

Only care about superficial cosmetic procedures. Barely glanced at my moles for a skin check before talking to me about laser treatments for my face. They are also very money hungry when it comes to billing insurance. My brother and I had the same problem with this. In my opinion they stretch what they do for you to bill insurance more. I was extrememly disappointed yesterday when I went for my appointment. When they showed me to the room, my first reaction was how dirty the room was. The paper on the bed was dirty, the trash can was over flowing, the trash can had drops of who knows what running on the three sides of the can that I could see. The objects on the counter were askewed. I waited for a half hour in the room listening to the doctor telling a patient about products and their Christmas open house. I expect more from a doctor's office and definitely did not like hearing a "sales" pitch from the next room, when I had been waiting a half hour. I left without seeing the doctor which I will probably be charged for, but it just didn't sit right with me as far as professionalism and the "sales" pitch I was hearing. Dr M is very nice and personable. The front desk could be friendlier but the back staff very nice. The office never tried to sell me procedures that I did not come in for. Also they do not make you wait long (offices that routinely make you wait an hour are double booking your time slot). I have recommended the office to friends and family. I recently had a Moh's surgery on my face by Dr. Murakawa. I am quite young with a smooth skin and was very concerned as now this turned cosmetic. I interviewed him twice, sought counsel from other Dr.'s (a 34yr. practicing Internist, an established Plastic Surgeon, both highly respected in their areas of expertise). Both highly recommended Dr. Murakawa. Now I am 3mnths. post surgery, he has a very light touch- for my scar continues to heal - yet is very long and fine. His staff has been very understanding and compassionate as I have had many questions and concerns about the post scarring and I have been back twice thus far for laser treatments he offers complimentary to ease the redness and stimulate collagen. I am rest assured my cancer has been removed and I will have a positive cosmetic result. Thus far my skin is looking better daily. Thank you Dr. Murakawa and staff. I work in the beauty business and many have asked for my surgeons name as they want the same results! I receive compliments on the fine scar- I am only happy to refer them to this fine rare surgeon. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! My fiance and I were both patients here . My treatment was for a simple spot so my experience was much different. The staff was unfriendly: no greeting or clear direction as to where to sign in and when treatment was completed, there was no direction with how to check out.. I felt like I was a bother to the staff more than anything. MY FIANCE'S EXPERIENCE IS AS FOLLOWS: Having undergone two body checks in as many years, nothing was detected by Dr. Murakawa. The examinations lasted only a few seconds and, as the Doctor was rushing out of the exam room door, my fiance called back to him: "Wait, what about this spot?" Murakowa begrudgingly returned into the room to take a closer look and, upon accurate examination, stated: "We should probably take a look at that... You have good eyes!" Who's the doctor here anyway??? A biopsy was taken which confirmed the spot was indeed cancerous. This trend continued for the next two appointments; spots that had been previously overlooked were again brought to Murakawa's attention only to confirm via biopsy that they were also cancerous. My fiance also found the staff to be rude and unprofessional. Instead of a courteous greeting, he was met with the front desk staff conversing about their favorite alcoholic drinks at the bar and "chasing down men". We are done with Somerset Skin Center's poor medical treatment and unprofessional conduct. read more

After waiting over 1 hour and 15 minutes and changing patient rooms twice, I finally saw Dr. Murakawa. The nurses told me, after an hour, that there had been an emergency but to wait that long was inexcusable. Then to have Dr Murakawa walk in, look at the affected area and make a diagnosis without even talking to me or hearing the "history" of the area was a bit unsettling. He was so busy talking in "doctor language" spouting all the disease names that all I got out of it was SKIN CANCER. I had to stop him from leaving to even answer my question. The assistants told me that to do the procedure he wanted would be another 2 hours. Since it was already well past noon, I asked if they had any snacks that might hold me over until the doctor was done and they suggested that my husband go out and pick up something. When he got back, the nurse told me to wait on eating and then told me that Dr Murakawa needed to rerun the biopsy and I would have probably 1/2 hour to eat. Next he flew back in, mumbled more unintelligible doctor information and all I got out of that was that the area was not skin cancer but something that resembled "precancerous" something. He tried to leave again before I stopped him to ask if it was really precancerous, would it develop into cancer and should we take it out now? He said no, that all of these (what ever the term was that he used) didn't turn in to cancerous and not to worry about it. He left the room. His assistant, who was very nice, came back in and dealt with the other 2 questionable spots and explained wound care. I am definitely NOT ever stepping back into that office again and I would warn anyone else to do the same thing. I pride myself on my medical knowledge and my inquisitive nature but even to me he was impossible to understand. read more

The office staff was nice, but the experience went downhill from there! My daughter had bumps on her forehead that would not go away. The doctor came in and never stopped talking long enough for us to give him ANY information. You could say a couple words, then off he'd go again. To say he examined her face for three seconds would be generous! He diagnosed acne, wrote a script and was headed out the door. When i tried to protest, he said something to the effect that he was the one who knows about these things and that "this will clear it up, trust me!". One month later, the treatment did nothing, the "acne" is something else entirely, and we have wasted the two months that we had to try to help her before she left for college. On the way out, we noticed that the waiting room was full of Medicare patients taped up with gauze patches on their noses, ears, etc. At $1000 per cancerous spot removal procedure, I think this may be his main focus.
