SERVICE: Dr.Spurling and his staff (Especially his PA Victoria) are amazing. They're so quick and concise and very friendly. One of my biggest pet peeves is waiting and waiting. Each time I visit I wait no longer than 5 minutes. Victoria tells me if I ever get a huge pimple again to call anytime and they'll take care of it with an injection. They live up to what they say. Each time I get pimple they squeeze me in rather than me squeezing my pimple. KNOWLEDGE: Dr. Spurling and his staff PA, nurses, and assistants are well rounded. Most doctors just give you the diagnosis then the medication without educating you on the cause. I made an appointment with Dr. Spurlin for a skin cancer check. I was told to leave my underwear on for the examination. I reviewed a very cursory exam that was not thorough and he refused to look at anything "below the waist" as if skin cancer doesn't exist other than where he felt like checking that day. When I questioned this I was told that this is the customary practice and that it was my my responsibility to know if something didn't look right and that I should have notified them if I wanted that area examined for something specific. This is absurd and is so far outside the standard practice in dermatology. I've had several other dermatologists confirm that this is not how skin cancer exams should be performed. Dr. Spurlin refused to discuss anything other than the skin cancer check and said I'd need to make another appointment to even talk about a skin tag removal. This was one of the worst experiences I've had with a physician and i would not recommend this practice to anyone. I had to go to another dermatologist and pay for another specialist appointment to get a proper skin cancer exam. read more

Dr. Spurlin and his staff are top notch, best of the best. I have had some skin tag issues for years as well as some other mole/wart type things going on and was always afraid to go get them removed. Dr. Spurlin's staff made me feel very comfortable right off, tthey came in talked with me in-depth about what was going on , marked everything and then Dr. Spurlin came in to take a look. He is one of the nicest Dr. I have ever met, no really, a genuine great guy and very very knowledgeable doc. He went over everything and determined that we would take the area removals in three parts, explained exactly how they would be doing it and what I could expect, that alone made me feel good about what and how we were going to attack this. Not that the numbing was fun but never ever even felt them or the removal process A+. Some of the removals were even sent ot to be analyzed.... One star for the terrible waste of time this office put me through. They recommended I take accutane even though I didn't need it and it made absolutely no difference for six months. Really messed with my vitals - gave me high cholesterol. Requires you to get bloodwork monthly and visit monthly just so they can collect. Additionally, I went in to the office ten days before my wedding under stress because my skin was displaying new issues. Dr. Spurlin did not have the patience to deal with a stressed out bride so he walked out in the middle of my 5 minutes with him. Then he made it a point to come back and ask his assistant to leave the room because apparently he was "done with me". Fairly unprofessional and inconsiderate; not what you'd expect from a real medical professional. I would not refer anyone I know to this man. read more

I love Dr. Spurling! So my husband and I when we first got married we're debating on who had the better doctors... I won in the dental category so he now goes to my dentist but in the dermatology category Dr. Spurling took the cake. I love that I can actually book an appointment with him and not have to take whatever doctors available. What really got me is when My toddler was maybe 10 months old and had a horrible breakout. I thought his pediatrician sent me to a child dermatologist but he was a regular fern and told me there was nothing he could do so I called And asked for Dr. Spurling and he took us and solved the issue. He knew there weren't harsh chemicals or prescriptions he should have but he gave the best over the counter recommendation and it worked. I have a son that was diagnosed with pre-diabetes and has a father who has diabetes and gave him the lectur. I guess Dr. Spurlin thought because I'm black that I was a single parent. My son is on the Spectrum and had nightmares about Dr. Spurlin drilling him on what he heard approximately 6 times from the medical doctors in our family. From my uncle, my niece, my sister and my father who are exceptional black surgeons and internists. News flash Dr. Spurlin scare tactics don't work on people with his super ability you just made the whole situation worse. Take a refresher course in psychology 101. I came to see Dr. Spurlin for non-cosmetic dermatology (a mass that needed to be removed), and I couldn't be happier with my visits. Reading some of these other reviews, I can see how some people could mistake Dr. Spurlin's relaxed, jovial demeanor for unprofessionalism - I, personally, don't care for over serious doctors - but those people would be mistaken in assuming that such an appearance in Dr. Spurlin means he lacks the knowledge and serious concern about his patients that makes for a good doctor. He was very knowledgeable during our consultations, and when at one point he wasn't sure about something, he didn't just BS me - he went and looked it up just to be sure. That's someone who is looking out for you. When we were deciding how to move forward, he listened to my concerns, offered multiple options, pushing none of them, and was very gentle yet exact during the procedure that I elected. I have been to other dermatologists and GPs before for dermatological concerns, and none were as good as Dr. Spurlin. Suffice it to say that it is clear to me also after these visits that Dr. Spurlin is one of the few doctors out there who isn't in the profession because he's looking to push expensive procedures and get rich - he really does want to help and he puts your well being and satisfaction first. Period. I would also like to note that, while some wait time is to be expected at any doctor's office, I have never been kept waiting at Pinnacle. I have always been taken to my exam room within ten minutes and met with the doctor shortly thereafter. I have never felt, unlike in many other doctor's offices, like I had been forgotten about. And more generally speaking, his office has one of the best staff I've had the pleasure of working with. When I called with detailed questions about insurance costs for possible procedures, I didn't get a surly receptionist who couldn't be bothered to look through the paperwork, I got a friendly person who took the time to give me the best estimates based on my information (I think her name was Nicole). One of the doctor's assistants (Shayna, I think) also stood out; she was very pleasant, was truly interested in my care, and really was working hand-in-hand with Dr. Spurlin to give the best and most efficient office experience they could. How many doctors' offices have you visited where both the doctor and the other staff have stood out as exemplary? I was able to get an appointment with little lead time and get in right away. The doctor and his staff were all super amazing and friendly. Everyone there really seemed to care about you as a patient. I went in for an outbreak of perioral dermatitis and could not have been happier with my treatment. I would recommend Dr. Spurlin any day. Disappointed. I originally scheduled my appointment with Dr. Spurlin but had to reschedule and saw Dr. Kinsley. My pediatrician recommended this office. My son has eczema and I was hoping for a little bit more advice. The only question she asked is if we had pets. Nothing about diet, clothing, fabrics, detergents, etc, etc... She offered no real input and didn't really seem that interested. Just as I thought would happen - steroid cream and come back in a week. Dr. David Spurlin was referred to me by a good friend. I was had an issue that a Henry Ford dermatology team was not able to diagnosis or treat. I was able to promptly get an appointment, a diagnosis, treatment, and resolution in a couple of weeks for an issue that plagued me for over a year. Dr. Spurlin listens, has great office staff/assistants, I never have a long wait, it's conveniently located and he is an excellent Dermatoligist! Went for a worrisome spot on the side of my nose and faced up with dealing with cancer. Created appointment and arrived as the first patient in the morning. Was greeted by nursing staff, as well as the doctor. They spent the time to make me feel comfortable and then performed the biopsy which was accomplished efficiently and painlessly. The biopsy site healed quickly with no scarring. I then received word the tissue was not cancerous. The nurses at this office are excellent. They take time to listen and want to make sure you have a good experience. The doctors... not so much. They walk in, barely listen/check your problem, slap a random prescription that doesn't help and leave. I think at my previous appointment I was given 2 min with the doctor. Dr. Spurlin is such a rude and belittling dermatologist. I tried to tell him about a cut inside my nose that was concerning me and despite the P.A. trying to show him where it was all he could say is that "it was above his pay grade" and said that he couldn't find it. The nurse had to confirm to me after he left that she had seen it even though he could not and that it wasn't just all in my head. I also went in asking about an ear cartilage piercing that I had gotten recently, I was worried that it was scarring in a weird way and just wanted him to look at it. He acted all huffy about it and said "I guess I'm just getting old". Touched the piercing without gloves on and then said that I should "ditch it". He offered literally zero advice other than to remove it. He made me feel like crap and I had to hold back tears after the appointment. He was scolding the nurse in front of me for when she was trying to explain to him what she wrote on my papers. The nurses are far more helpful, kind, knowledgeable, and asked me questions. He then ran out the door without acknowledging me and the nurse had to check outside to see if he was finished. Never going back. I refuse to pay someone to look down their nose at me and my concerns. I shouldn't have to justify my concerns to my doctor and I shouldn't feel belittled after an appointment. read more

My kids and I have been going to Pinnacle for years, and I think we get good quality care here. The support staff is excellent, the facility is clean and modern, and it seems like they are absolutely on the cutting edge of technology for treatments. I also get emails from them about specials for things like sunscreen. There are two strikes against this office. The first is patients are often kept waiting - not all the time, but often enough that it bugs me. They do the 'ole bait & switch, where you're brought back to an exam room on time but the Dr. comes in late. The second (and this is a big one, for me ) is that Dr. Spurlin doesn't like children, and refuses to see them. Literally. Any kids younger than age 13 have to been seen by one of his physician assistants (who are excellent by the way - especially Dr. Jennifer). There was a sign hanging in the waiting room, and I forget the exact phrasing, but it said something along the lines of "kids aren't welcome in the waiting room while parents are being treated." There is also a framed article highlighting his training regime for his German Shepherds. Altogether a nice dichotomy. The sign has since been removed. So, if you have kids & see Dr. Jennifer, you'll get good care. If you're an adult, and don't care about the anti-kid bias, you'll also receive good care from Dr. Spurlin. Either way, you'll probably have to wait a bit. read more

One of the worst experiences of my life. I had IPL treatments for what I was told was sun damage, it was not sun damage, it was melasma. IPL only makes this condition far, far worse. I had zig-zags and darker spots on my face and it was far worse after I had several IPL treatments. They did not diagnose my condition correctly and after hundreds of dollars spent and painful IPL treatments it has taken me several years to undo the damage this this place has caused me. Research IPL, you will see many people who would not recommend this and I definitely would NOT recommend it for anyone with melasma, which I believe is linked to adrenal fatigue. I am not "out to get" anyone or cause any problems, I am just sharing my honest experience and trying to save others from this same devastating experience. read more

Pinnacle Dermatology on Woodward and 14 mile is the best dermatologist office and practice I have ever been to and I cannot recommend highly enough. As a teacher visiting family, my skin condition was initially misdiagnosed before the trip and became exacerbated - worse daily. Upon a friend's recommendation from Beaumont, I called Pinnacle and received a new patient appointment within one day. I got lost and was late for the appointment, which was understood by the accommodating staff. Then, there was an insurance glitch (go figure), where my options were more than reasonable and affordable than many of the co-pays I've paid in the past. The nurse listened intently to me rant on about how frustrating it is to have this condition. After this, Victoria Verkest, PA, came in, sat down, let me talk about what has transpired, all while staring intently at my face. Within minutes, she diagnosed it as treatable, non-contagious, and non-cancerous. What a huge relief and overwhelming comfort this provided. Tory (nick-name) didn't whisk me out the door with some cursory diagnosis, elaborate biopsy expenditures I could hardly afford, and quota to maintain. It was like she really cared about me as a patient and individual, and this makes all the difference. She explained why the other skin ointments and treatments did not work. She gave me information to know more about mine. She told me the type of foods I should avoid. She also literally took the time and effort to print out coupons sensitive to the fact that I had no insurance while providing directions to a local store that had the best price for these prescriptions and medications. Victoria was kind, knowledgeable, thorough, compassionate and sensitive to my facial condition which has already exponentially and dramatically improved. Respectful and caring are two actions this doctor is lacking. He doesn't want to deal with you unless he is making hundreds off you. He is not passionate towards being a doctor. He is just in it for the money. It's a real shame that anyone can be a doctor based on their iQ. Great location and nice office are the reasons why I stayed so long. OK I will first off let me tell you the whole experience I had here was horrible. I've read several reviews on here that the staff is rude, including the Doctor and this was also my experience. This guy was d*** from the start. I start going to him for Acne about 3 or so years ago. He started me on one antibiotic and when that failed, he immediately wanted to start Acutane. I was on that years ago and had several side effects including palpitations, which is a listed possible side effect of this drug. Because I'm young, he didn't believe me and basically wanted me to start me on it right away. His blonde nurse was also very rude to me from the beginning and the first thing she said to me on my first visit was "Are you messing with your hormones?" Her immediate response was not welcoming in the least. I stopped going to this a***** after googling "Top Docs Dermatologist" and found another Derm in Farmington Hills. She and her staff have been doing procedures and kept me on antibiotics and now my skin is much better. Don't waste your time or money with this place. read more

I was given a referral from my PCP to see Dr. Gray for a minor skin issue. From the receptionist who booked my initial appointment (Vanessa) to the medical assistants for my two appointments (Taylor and I'm not certain of the first assistant I met but she was excellent), to Dr. Gray herself, the experience was stellar. I would definitely feel confident going back to this office again in the future for any further dermatology care. Quite frankly, I'd love for Dr. Gray to be my PCP; however, she's not willing to switch medical practices for my benefit alone, which is unfortunate. The staff at Pinnacle are professional, very friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. I wouldn't hesitate to send my closest friends and family to this practice.
