Good beaches are hard to come by in the Keys but Sombrero Beach is a hidden gem! Situated on a locals road you can't spot it from the main road but that's what makes it so special. The sand is white, there's a few palms for shade, and there's a playground for the kiddos. Another great feature is, it is dog friendly! The water does have sea grass so water shoes or fins are recommended if you're squeamish like me. Snorkeling is hit or miss because it can be a little murky but I've been able to see fish. A really cool spot that you should check out if you're in Marathon! read more

Day trip down to the Florida Keys was surprised to hear this was the nearest public beach to Miami - apparently the Keys do not have many beaches. Sombrero Beach is not too large but does have ample space to relax. Also free and clean! Scattered trees and shelters to provide shade. Several areas to park. I agree with other reviews there is a strong smell mid July. read more

We had to stop for business in Marathon and had time to kill, I searched top local placed and this little hidden gem popped up. Just two miles off the main road its a little nook that is absolutely gorgeous. Clean green grassy area with picnic tables and a nice park, you walk through to find a beautiful white sandy beach. It's not very big, but it's clean, clear water is gorgeous. You can walk towards the end where the are some nice rocks and find people kayaking and walking their dogs. It's I believe more of a locals beach. There are mostly homes or rental homes surrounding it. All I know is that it's beautiful, clean and very family/pet friendly. So far the best beach I've been to in the keys! read more

I did research on Sombrero Beach before going to the keys and I'm so glad we did since it's tucked away or we would have missed it! We planned our drive so we would get there sunrise... But when we got there everything was locked up and the signs said it would open after the sunrise so I was super pissed! But thankfully a nice park ranger got there early and opened it up. We had the whole place to ourselves!!!! Beautiful sunrise and lots of sea life! We saw several ray pups and ghost crabs. The beach also had sea turtle nests sectioned off. I suppose if you're looking to compare this beach only to the others in the Keys, then it would merit a higher rating. There just isn't much in the way of beaches. My wife and I are Florida natives though, and it's difficult to compare this beach with most of what you see on the mainland. The beach is rather small (understandable) and when we arrived, much of the shoreline was covered in sea grass. It's hard to determine from the photos if this is a year-round occurrence. It may have had something to do with why our bathing suits smelled so bad when we got back to the hotel that we had to leave them out on the balcony. The sand is nice, though, and the facilities are above average. If you're looking for a beach in the area, this is probably the best one. read more

Has potential to be a really good spot. Needs a good clean up seems like it might not be back to normal after Irma. There was a TON of seaweed and with that comes a distinct odor. Bathrooms are clean and not smelly. Showers available by the restrooms and there was a playground for the littles. read more

We were excited to find a beach that was listed as dog friendly. So off we went. We parked and leashed our pup and went down to check it out. We noticed that there were other people there at the north end of the beach with their dogs, so that's where we headed. We were able to unleash our dog and play in the water. Very nice afternoon. Everyone else who had dogs were very courteous about their own dogs. Asked if our dog was friendly, if she could play with their dogs. No issues at all. People were good about cleaning up after their pets as well. Just be cautious for the Portuguese Man Of War Jellyfish. We were told that two days prior there were hundreds of them washed up on the shore and creating some problems for the pups as well as the people. Wish we had found this place sooner so we could have made repeat visits. read more

We are currently visiting the Keys and this is by far the best beach we went to. We tried Higgs beach and thought our feet where going to get shredded. We came here on the way back to our hotel and we will be going back before we leave Friday. We found a bunch of shells also not anything major but good enough for us. If you are coming down you must put this on your list to do. read more

We stay in Marathon at Banana Bay about once a month. My 7 year old and I ride our bikes to beautiful sombrero beach. You can rent kayaks at nearby Wheels 2 Go and enjoy Boot Key adventures, paddling through the mangroves. Nice beach for families and sunbathers. I wasn't aware Florida beaches have so much seaweed so that was a bit of a shocker. If the seaweed would find a new home that'd be nice but not much to do about that! There seemed to be plenty of room for beach goers to spread out. Dog friendly (on leashes that I could see). The kids waded out in the water which is calm near the beach and about 50 feet out (so safe) and they had a blast playing in the sand. Bathrooms are nearby and relatively clean. I'm a weirdo when it comes to public restrooms so I get grossed out easily. Thankfully, these were in good shape. In fact, I've been pleasantly surprised by the public toilets in FL so far! We had an ice cream bar from an ice cream truck that was circling and there is a nice playground for kids. I would recommend as an easy go to beach. read more

This is a cute, clean little beach area. The beach is thin (from dune to shore), which seems to be standard here, but it runs quite a ways down. We were here on a random December day, but I imagine it can get very crowded in the summer/peak times, especially on the sandier parts of the beach. There is a small playground, covered picnic tables, at least one grill, benches & a bathroom big enough to change clothes in. This is heaven on earth folks. Wow. Just Wow. My family decided to drive out to the keys and wasn't sure exactly what we wanted to see or do but hey it was another excuse for a road trip! Initially we said that we wanted to go the beach and then head on to a glass bottom boat tour but frankly we took one look at this place and we said to hell with it. If you are looking for a small, quiet, secluded, picturesque, romantic, child and dog friendly beach this is it. There are no lifeguards here so you are on your own. Don't be a fool and be lulled by these peaceful waters (there were barely and waves. It was more like a lake than a beach) and head out too far if you don't know how to swim. (There are plenty of friendly folk and I doubt they will let you drown but hey...God forbid you run into an apathetic crowd. LOL) I was swimming with schools of fish. I saw fish jumping from the water and i found a large crab claw (Thankfully with no live crab attached to it) There is a playground for the kids, CHARGING STATIONS for your phone/laptop!!, free parking, showers and restrooms. We stayed so long the local police had to kick us out and oh so reluctantly we left. This is well worth the drive if you driving from Miami. What are you waiting for??? You won't be disappointed! read more

Used to be a lovely beach but is now beyond smelly. The stench is so strong you smell it from your car before even arriving.

Sombrero Beach is a great place to ride out the nasty winter weather of the northeast. There's something to do for everyone and my good buddy Bob D. from Trenton (see his reviews) did it all. Whether you like to swim, snorkel, kayak, tan, go fishing, play volleyball or just chill this beach is for you! Since Bob and I were in the Keys for over a week we DID try all these things but our favorite activity is, of course, getting shit hammered and checkin' out the gals. Lots of hot little Latinas as well as some sexy southern MILFs. After a bunch of dark and cokes they all look good! One day we rented kayaks from Keys Kayak (review coming soon). Take a fishin' pole, cooler of beer and a camera and set of across the shallow flat across from the pier and around boot key into the mangrove forest. The water gets a little skinny but you can do whatever you want back there! If you see a group of yuppie tourist with a 'kayak guide' tell them where the manatees are and offer them a beer! There's a little key off the southwest point that's fun to yak around if you ever find your way out of the mangroves. If you bring your binoculars you can still check out the action on the beach. Watch out for the jet ski jerks, they'll run you right over. We got so pissed that we found their whips and tossed our left over bait inside (not advised). I'm pretty sure they were from Staten Island (Bob doesn't take kindly to those folks, not sure why). Once you get back to the beach listen for that annoying song from Les Miserables. If you hear it follow the terrible sound to the best ice cream truck around. That guy has great Coco Tacos! Wait 20 minuets and grab your snorkel gear. Head out to either end of the beach and carefully approach the super sharp rocks. A little tip-don't try to pour beer into your snorkel like Bob. Anyway, we saw barracuda, some jacks, snapper (mmmm) and huge sting ray. All we really wanted to find was a square groper but boarder patrol was all over. I love this place and will be back once I sober up. Bob insulted some locals under the bridge and will be sitting the next trip out. The only complaint that I have is the Bernies. At the Jersey shore we have Bennies and shoebies. Down here they have tons of what I call Bernies, like in the movie. But there always here, not just on the weekend. If your not familiar, a bernie is someone old, tan, wrinkled who hasn't moved in such a long time you might think they've expired. I was even able to sharpen my dive knife on one of their thighs! read more

We loved this beach. Such a gem to find. There is no fee which is a awesome. They have showers and restrooms. We were able to find a covered picnic table to set up for the day. The seaweed was not too bad and there was no smell which was a blessing. If you get a chance head to the area near the end of the road the water is clam and seaweed free. All in all you need to come to this beach. Did I mention they have a playground and volleyball court. Great find!! read more
